Government Buildings, Dublin. One of Charles Haughey's better legacies.

^^I quite like the Customs House, but like many/most historic buildings in Dublin it suffers becuase of a lack of appreciation and the compromising context of its surroundings. The loopline bridge, liberty hall and a couple of decrepit buildings in the general vicinity ruin a perfectly, elegant and classical Georgian building.
Being a history fan, my fav buildings would usually have an abundant/interesting history attached to them, rather than being just superficially impressive. So, Christchurch and Dublin Castle would standout, but both again are ruined by their 20th/21st century context!!!

Anyway, more Customs House pics...

Luckily for Trinity College, Parliament Square right can't be ruined by a reckless city council...

Established by the Norse in 1030, present structure built in 1172, largest crypt in the UK and Ireland, burial place of Strongbow and much much more...
And what do we do??? Leave it in the centre of a major traffic junction, yellow boxes and traffic signs everywhere...

Will we ever learn??? This place needs a proper piazza infront of it!

Sorry to carry on the theme, but another deeply unappreciated treasure is Dublin Castle. Carpark in the lower courtyard and the horror that is the revenue building just across from it.
Completely disconnected to its surroundings, one could visit Dublin without realising its smack bang in the middle of the city.
It was once part of the streetscape, and it would be wonderful to see this again. This can be achieved by demolishing the revenue building and the 1960's building the George and Yamamori are in on George's street... Voila, the lower courtyard looks out onto George's Street and directly down onto Exchequer/Wicklow street.

Love the interior of St. Patricks. Have to say, Christchurch is just one of many buildings in Dublin that makes me sad. There's no other city in Europe that would leave such an ancient building to decay amidst fumes and fumes of traffic.
It's impossible to appreciate so many buildings in Dublin because of bloody traffic, traffic signs, double decker buses and massive trees in front of the most important buildings, while grotty non-descript streets that could do with a bit of green lie bare.:bash:
Sorry, I'm in a bit of a rant mood today!

Love the museum of Ulster. It's a great marriage of brutal and classical!

Cork and Kerry are generally better known for their scenery, culture and pretty villages than great buildings or structures...

Some 1,400years ago, in the midst of the Dark Ages, a group of crazed/dedicated monks took to the wild North Atlantic, carved out a stairs and built a monastery atop the rocky enclave of Skellig Michael...

When I was in Cobh the island in the distance (Haulbowline) looked very impressive but most of the tourist info didnt acknowledge it's existance.

Yeah, it's main the naval base. I guess it's out of bounds for tourists... There was a fire there a while back that destroyed a couple of buildings IIRC.

A picture here from Limerick City Centre, note St Johns Cathedral, the tallest in the country at 308 feet, the picture reminds me of a world war 2 picture!

I love the idea of putting Dun Aengus as a great monument of architecture. I was lucky enough to walk near the cliff and look out over the ocean thinking that Newfoundland and Canada was on the other side. I'm also partial to Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin. It was built under the auspices of Oliver Cromwell, not the kindliest dude, but architecturally stunning. I worked on a Christmas display of different countries customs in 1988 in a part of this huge building before it became a museum.

Yeah, the Royal Hospital is in good enough nick for a building constructed in the 1600's. Think it could do with a lick of paint or have the original brick-work revealed!!!
