Also plan to get the War Memorial, the one of King Edward on North Tce and a few others, but I'm waiting for a time when the sun isn't directly behind them.

What are the iconic ones of your city?

Not sure whether these are icons, but they're very prominently displayed outside the State Library of Victoria, Swanston St. Melbourne. Flinders, Burke & Wills, Weary Dunlop , Queen V., and Lord Gordon are just down the street.

When I get back to my birthplace in Ballarat, I'll digitize that avenue of bronze PM's in the Botanic Gardens. (and also "Flight from Pompeii", in marble). Now how iconic is that? I know you're all hanging on the PM's ...

Promising thread here ... thanks AtD.

Some more from Melbourne: in Swanston Street, the Explorers: Burke & Wills, who departed from Melbourne but never made it back, & outside the Cathedral, Flinders, in his whaleboat, who first sighted the Victorian Coast (well west of Pt. Hicks)

Queen Victoria: in the gardens of the same name. At the base of her monument are four female figures, labelled "Born 1819", "Married 1840", "Reigned 1837-1901" and "Died 1901". As a child I was perturbed by the brazen display of naked breasts the Queen was flaunting in her younger years.

Weary Dunlop, of Changi Prison Fame, & Edward the 7th (and we all remember him, don't we?)

Cheers Yardmaster.

The St. George statue is interesting. I wonder why they chose a myth. And I like the one of Queen Victoria.

The Australian-American Memorial in Canberra is 73m tall.

There is also an Australian-American Memorial in Brisbane which has a similar design but is smaller.

This statue isn't so much iconic as controversial. It's of Robert Towns, who financed the establishment of Townsville but is also thought to have been involved in blackbirding (ie the slave trade). It was only unveiled a couple of months ago and sits beside Victoria Bridge near the corner of Stokes & Ogden Sts in Townsville.

Its actually 78m to top of golden eagle.
erected in 1954 the 5m eagle weighs 1.5tonnes.
so statue is only 5m tall.maybe its "highest" statue

Colonel William Light (Lights Vision) would have to be the most famous statue in Adelaide. William Light is the guy who planned Adelaide, and its one of my favourite statues in Adelaide.

BTW Nice work eastadl

Well, I think you have to include to the column, otherwise the stone plinths all those statues stand on wouldn't count either.

If we're going to talk stats then I think we also have to define what a sculpture is. For instance, the "largest" might be the Vietnam Memorial in Canberra which was designed by the famous Australian sculptor Ken Unsworth but which might be defined as architecture. Also, can we count "big things" like the Big Merino? They're pop culture kitsch, but still sculpture.
