I believe that PJ's biggest factory is Nestlé.
Got this from the Nestlé Malaysia webpage:

Nestlé in Malaysia

Nestlé's commitment to providing quality products
to Malaysians dates back more than 90 years ago.
Nestlé began in Malaysia in 1912 as the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company in Penang and later, growth and expansion made a move to Kuala Lumpur necessary in 1939.

Since 1962, with its first factory in Petaling Jaya,
Nestlé Malaysia now manufactures its products in 8 factories and operates from its head office in Petaling Jaya, and 6 sales offices nationwide.

The Company was publicly listed on the KLSE on
13 December, 1989. Today, the Company employs over 3,500 people and manufactures as well as markets more than 300 HALAL products in Malaysia.

Hmmm...I thought PJ is more like a district rather than a township like Sunway. Is this a fair comparison :?

August 24th, 2004, 06:05 AM
erm..this is Petaling Jaya vs Subang Jaya lah and Sunway is in Subang. BTW, when it comes to population and development, they are comparable ;)
Each of them has their own townships like PJ has the SS, Sections, Damansara Perdana, Kelana Jaya(i think it's partly subang and pj..right?) while Subang has SS, USJ, Puchong.. ;)

Well Sunway Pyramid does not fall under Subang, they call it Sunway, Petaling Jaya. :)

But MPSJ in charge of Sunway, so I think it should be under Subang Jaya. :)

This article said Sunway is under MPSJ since 1997 :?

SUBANG JAYA

Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) uses two different valuation systems to determine rates in different areas of the municipality.

Formerly known as the Petaling District Council, it was upgraded to a municipal council in 1997 and inherited two major areas ? Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway from MPPJ.

These two areas are assessed using the valuation rates of 1992. The rest of the new municipality is assessed using the council?s 1996 valuation system.

Due to its urban location, all properties, including land, in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya are assessed at a uniform 8% rate regardless of whether they are classified as housing, commercial, industrial or agricultural.

In Puchong, Seri Kembangan, USJ, Kampung Bukit Lanchong and Putra Heights, rates for housing property is five per cent, commercial and industrial properties are at 6%t and agricultural land at 2%.

Bills for the second half of the year were sent out in July. Ratepayers have until Aug 31 to pay up.

MPSJ was one of the earliest among local authorities in Klang Valley to implement Internet payment facility. There are also other modes of payment available, including electronic banking, direct debit and auto billing.

Those who prefer the old fashion way of paying at a counter can do so at post offices, the MPSJ head office in USJ 5 and branch offices in Puchong and Seri Kembangan, as well as in Carrefour Subang Jaya and Tesco in Puchong.

Over RM58mil in assessment is owed to MPSJ since 1997. The bulk of this is due to commercial and industrial property owners. MPSJ has started a lucky draw drive at its counters in Tesco and Carrefour to encourage ratepayers to pay up on time.

Yes.....Baqthier is right! PJ was splitted into 2 with the creation of MPSJ. MPSJ's jurisdiction includes Puchong and Seri Kembangan. The article posted by Baq confirmed MPSJ's boundary ;)

I remember the big hooha when MPSJ was first created! :D

But like Farid had pointed out......there are bound to be confusion as most Sunway-based companies still categorised themselves under PJ....dunno why :dunno:

What's good about Subang Jaya (the original SS and USJ)? to mention a few..

Subang Parade- ideal, no nonsense, straight to the point shopping.
Federal Highway, NKVE, SAE, NPE, LDP, NSCL- and a few more.
Canai & Such- I'm sure u've heard
Little green padangs- neighbourhood social venues in the mornings and evenings, really.
Carrefour, Giant- The firsts in the country
Nice-looking houses- especially in USJ
Dozens of 7 11s, McDees, KFCs... -and all the other pengaruh barat

anymore to add guys, or subtract?

Honestly speaking, PJ is on another league. It's older, matured and more diverse. But its your choice, both were after all mainly residential developments. Think I like Subang Jaya just the way it is. :)

I love Subang Parade when it first opened cause it had Malaysia's first Toys R Us! :D ......other than that not much to see or do there :(

As for highways....hmmm....I hate the stretches that criss crosses MPSJ territory (incld Puchong and Seri Kembangan) cos all these stretches ALWAYS jam teruk!

Canai & Such had looses its charms already as it had moved to the 'upper class'. I used to be a die-hard fan ( since those days when it is known as Ravi's! :D ). Other notable ones I always go to are Darussalam (esp before renovation) and the one in USJ 4 (next to Taipan.....forgot name liao).

As for PJ......nothing could beat Murni for its large drinks (esp Longan Lychee) and Pelita for its cleanliness. Not to mentioned the many mamaks around Uptown and Section 14! Even those near Paramount Garden isn't bad :D

Padangs are found everywherelah including 30-years old housing estates in Cheras! :D

PJ has got the country's first and only IKEA. The first Cold Storage also in PJ. The first TGV Cinemas also in PJ :D :D :D

As for nice-looking houses - SS3 (also known as Kg. Tunku) had tons. Not to mention Bukit Gasing and Tropicana! :D ........BU and D'sara Mutiara/Perdana had some of the nicest looking terraces (pre-renovation) around :okay:

As for pengaruh barat.....well......PJ had the largest and most 'high-tech' drive-thru McD outlet at BU. Not forgetting the country's first 24-hrs fastfood restaurant - A&W at PJ Old Town. :D

So PJ is a serious contender here too!

Sze, here are some other points backing up your claim!

The country's longest operating 5-star hotel is Hilton PJ, which has been around since 1984!

One of the first modern bowling alleys used to be in PJ. This was Kent Bowl in Asia Jaya (now Armada Plaza). It closed down in 1998(?) after Pyramid's opening and is now a discotheque.

The first highway in the Valley (the Fed) cuts through PJ!

The first modern shopping malls outside of KL were in PJ, which were the Asia Jaya and Jaya SC (Cold Storage). Both have been around since the late 70s.

The first Parkson Grand store was opened in PJ's Atria complex in 1990(?).

Oh ya, and do not forget the famous "Wai-Chek-Kai" of ss2, the most happening non-alcoholic nightspot!

Canai & Such used to be Ravi's at SS15 SJ (near Taylor's and INTI). Then they now had a few notable (and higher class) outlet namely The Gazebo which is also at SS15 (next to the drive-thru McD) .....quite near to Subang Parade and a 'cafe cum mamak' at USJ Taipan. Not forgetting Malaysia's most expensive mamak - Canai & Such Sunway (opposite Sunway Lagoon Resort)! :D

hahaha...thanks! I am supporting BOTH SJ and PJ actually :D :D :D

Longest operating 5-star hotel is PJ Hiton meh? :? I think KL Hilton which started wayyyyback in 1971 is the longest lah (ceases operations in 2002 and reopened as Mutiara KL) ;) There are many KL hotels which are 5-stars including The Concorde and Federal Hotel which are 5-stars too but it seems the likes of em had been downgraded to 4-stars :dunno: ........How about Genting Hotel which had been operational since 1978? Isn't that 5-star too? :D

SS2 'Wai sek kai' ( Cantonese pronounciation :D ) is definitely one of the main draws of PJ and arguably the watery hole and the reason SS2 became what it is today :okay: .....there used to be a 'VCD Kai' (VCD Street) in SS2 (next to 'Wai Sek Kai') many years back - until the authorities started clamping down VCD stalls in 2001 :D

Hey, why u guys getting so protective over PJ la? I didn't say PJ is bad wat...

Anyway Sze, here's my rebuttal. Enjoy...

Subang Parade is exactly what it is, a true-blue, no-frills shopping centre. Thats why it's very relaxing to shop there, no distractions. It's still popular and enjoys very high occupancy rates. It was the longest shopping complex in the region at one time also, which I'm sure u know also la. :D

Jams in SJ normally happen during peak hours only, mainly at Fed exits, Jalan Kewajipan, and the two roundabouts. Besides, a lot of traffic is also from outside of SJ, bypassing traffic into Shah Alam, etc. >( But during off peak periods, SJ is (one of) the most connected neighbourhoods in the valley. :bowtie:

Well, canai and such has a popular outlet in SS14 which is very much like your regular mamak. Even the upmarket ones are doing pretty well if I may say. Food is still good.

Talking about firsts, Subang has Tesco rite? The first in the country as well.

Think Subang has more cinemas than PJ too. :tongue3:

Oh, and have you been to our SS13 pasar malam? The cleanest ever. :)

SJ's nice-looking houses are not limited to the exclusively rich. That's the difference. :)

That's about it for now, or it can go on and on. See what u guys have to say first... :wink2:

PJ and SJ are two of my favorite cities, in actual fact!

I may have been living in PJ virtually my entire life but SJ also has a special place for me... I studied my entire school days in Sri KL School in SS15, from Pre-School all the way to F5! Not forgetting my A-Levels that i did in Taylors...

All those years, i also saw the rapid growth of SJ as a sister city of PJ... I don't wish to diss SJ off as it can also be considered a second home for me... But now, i have a tendency to side towards PJ as the rest of my college and working life is centered here...

In a way, i still think that the Hilton PJ is (one of) the longest-operating 5-star hotel in Malaysia... It has consistently maintained its rating and same management since opening in 1984... Just wondering, how come Concorde and Federal decided to downgrade their rating?

But yeah, i totally forgot all about the Genting Hotel... This one is a veteran in the industry! Another one is the Hotel Equatorial, which opened in 1975(?) and is THE longest operating 5-star now (since day 1!)...

How's Subang this days outside Sunway, Seri Kembangan and Puchong?

Aiyo, Bandar Sunway (including Sunway Lagoon & Sunway Pyramid) belongs entirely to PJ la (refer to their addresses - Jalan PJS1/xx, Bandar Sunway, 46150 Petaling Jaya). It just so happens to fall under the management of MPSJ for its close distance to SJ. You can refer to Sunway College's or Sunway Pyramid's address. Puchong will have its own council if it grows bigger in future, it's never part of Subang Jaya (refer to Puchong's address).

Based on this, i think the previous threads have to change lor... for eg: the shopping malls in PJ are 1 Utama, The Curve, Ikano Power Centre, Sunway Pyramid, Amcorp Mall etc. PJ's colleges are KDU, KBU, Sunway, Monash, etc. Which means PJ has a taller hotel than SJ too, and a theme park.

By the way, Kelana Jaya (ss5,ss6,ss7) belongs entirely to PJ too. PJ now includes - Sections 1-20 (first settlements), Sections 51, 52 (State/Newtown), SS (acronym for Sungei Way-Subang) 1-7 & 20-26, Tropicana, PJU (PJ Utara -Bandar Utama & Damansara), PJS (PJ Selatan - Bandar Sunway)... I'm not sure if Subang Jaya was once a part of PJ though. But Subang Jaya now consists of Subang Jaya (SS12-19 - a continuation of PJ's SS - note that Subang Jaya does not start with SS1, and PJ has a big missing piece of SS) and USJ (UEP Subang Jaya).

Like Clie-Highrises, I like both PJ & SJ, but if u really want me to side one, it'll be PJ :)

If you haven’t been to Subang in the past year or more, you’ll be kind of shocked to see the changes at the SS19 traffc lights (to enter fed highway) and especially the two roundabouts. Flyovers here and there, u-turns, closures, but the roundabouts are doing pretty well, traffic-wise, with all the construction going on. ;)

There is this commercial building (about 7-8 floors) under construction at the SS17 corner of the Jengka roundabout. Looks quite interesting, but not sure what it’s going to be.

Finally they are going to develop the empty land opposite Hilton... At least ppl entering PJ via that flyover can see skyscrapers at four sides!

TYW, it looks short because those are only the 17, 13, and 11 storey towers... The tallest one, with 39-floors is at the back... You can compare the height of that building with Hilton on the left... So much taller!

Been staying in both SJ (Sect 14, Puchong Jaya) as well as PJ (Sg Way), both SJ and PJ are more or less the same to me.
