Omar Abdullah plans metro in Jammu, Srinagar

feb 12, 2010

If things go as planned by Omar Abdullah, you will soon be able to take a speed tour of the Paradise on Earth.

The lurking terror threat notwithstanding, the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister is considering starting metro rail services in the state’s twin capitals.

“To overcome traffic jams and congestion and considering the increasing expanse of Jammu and Srinagar, the government is working on a proposal to start metro services in the twin capitals,” Omar said.

The government plans to conduct a traffic analysis by RITES, a government infrastructure development enterprise, and then approach the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) for a detailed project report that will include the feasibility and financial requirements.

“We will soon have the feasibility of metro services in both cities analysed by experts. Ideally, we would like DMRC to send a team and prepare a project report,” minister for urban development Nasir Aslam Wani said.

“Once we have the project report, we will focus on the finances. After that the construction will start. No time frame has been set, however,” Nasir said.

Travel operators were circumspect. “It is [the proposal] good and will boost tourism. But it is a time-consuming process. We first want the state to increase the frequency of flights between Srinagar and Leh to tap summer tourists,” GM Dag, chairman of J&K Tourism Alliance, said....

Translation: The increasing traffic was creating a headache for the government hence the govt decided to build new flyovers but the transport department feels that just flyovers will not be enough as they will cater todays need but not the future need. For this the under the city transport policy the govt has come up with a plan to have underground tunnels, parking for the the metro and the vehicles. The govt has contacted 3 transport companies regarding this.

Both srinagar and jammu have a metro planned but in srinagar the metro will be overground as the ground is not suitable for underground however Jammu has no such problems and considering the amount of flyovers already above ground the jammu metro will likely be underground. The department plans to cover 40-50 km area in and around jammu.

The 3 companies contacted in mumbai will be building a comprehensive city transport policy and they are advised to have subways for normal traffic and underground tunnels for the metro. The transport minister said that the policy has been nearly fiished and we have asked for a long term policy.

hmm well these are the two articles I could find. The first one is from Feb 12 and second one is from today. Looks like they do have an interest in having metros. Personally I think the chances are slim but who knows I thought the same for the Jaipur metro but construction has started on that. Let's hope for the best.

the fad of having metro in every city is becoming too much.
Why can't one rely on simpler to execute and low cost projects like BRT?

I think BRT wouldn't be suitable in hilly areas.

I meant it is way too much early to create a thread for Jammu and Srinagar Metros as we have almost no updates currently and I dont think we will see progess on this one in the near future. When the big cities like A'bad, Pune have dim chances of getting metro there is no way we can expect metros in the capitals of J & K with the current administration.

Efficient public transport and better roads would suffice for Jammu and Srinagar.

Lol Srinagar is a big city with almost a million pop. Neverthless the streets are empty during riots, disturbances etc.,

That's why its "proposed" + when the Jaipur, Luckhnow, Ludhiana metro threads started no one thought they'll make it into reality or we'll have any updates but Jaipur has made progress and we get updates for Luckhnow and Ludhiana so I don't see why not for Jammu and Srinagar.

Lucknow and Jaipur are very large cities with over 2.5 million pop. and Ludhiana has almost 2 million pop. compared to Srinagar with a million and Jammu even less than that. Jaipur is lucky to have DMRC executing to the project.

I didn't question why you create the thread, I just said it will become dead like the Lucknow metro, Ludhiana metro threads.

well its only a thread. If the project goes forward then good if it doesn't then oh well. Even I myself said that the chances are slim but if they've shown an interest then why not track the updates.

Will it be feasible for the population? May be a BRT is good enough or Monorail?

Also, is this the best way forward for a sub-million city?

Source (http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_bsf-to-pay-rent-of-land-used-for-border-fencing-in-j-and-k-omar-abdullah_1508435)
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah today said the Border Security Force would pay rent to the owners of land from the time it has taken possession for fencing of borders.

"BSF will also pay compensation to the owners after acquiring the land and the state administration has finalised an arrangement with BSF in this regard," Omar said in response to some points raised by some legislators at a meeting of the Jammu District Development Board.

The chief minister said the government is contemplating launching a comprehensive City Mobility Plan for the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar to streamline traffic movement, improve and upgrade road networks, introduce additional commuter facilities including launch of metro service and other programmes in a planned and balanced manner.

"We have already tied up with a national agency RITES to make detailed studies and finalise a report. We expect RITES to start work in this regard by March," he said.

The requirement of additional flyovers and bridges in Jammu and Srinagar cities would be conceptualised in this mega development strategy, the chief minister said.

He said that the culture of traffic lights to manage movement of vehicles in the cities of Srinagar and Jammu is yet to be cultivated and government is also working with two reputed companies to make studies and formulate DPR for this purpose.

Are you sure that Shrinagar and/or Jammu will not build metro? If not, I think closing this thread will be true.

But I suggest a metro network for Shrinagar. Shrinagar is really a crowded city.
