IT'S all system go for Shanghai's new transport hub near Hongqiao International Airport, but an extended Maglev line remains the stumbling block, project officials said yesterday.
The hub, planned to the west of the airport, will include the terminal of the new Shanghai-Beijing high-speed rail link, at least two Metro stations and dozens of bus stops, they said.
However, the city government is still considering whether to extend the magnetic Maglev line from Longyang Road Station to the new transport hub or even further.
"The uncertainty of the Maglev extension might affect the construction of the entire transport hub," an official of the hub project, who asked for anonymity, said yesterday.
He said the two Metro stations, lines 2 and 10, will be built beneath the Shanghai-Beijing railway station for passenger transfer by 2010.
Eventually, there will be five Metro lines entering the hub.
As the Maglev plan is undecided, project managers are still considering whether to leave a vacant Maglev area near the railway station.
"It will be a demanding job for us to calculate the size and position of that vacancy," he said.
China has set up a leadership team to oversee the construction of the Shanghai-Beijing high-speed rail link which is expected to begin soon to ensure its operation for World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
The new rail link, totalling 1,318 kilometers, will reduce the travel time between China's two major cities from 12 hours to under five as the new trains are expected to run up to 350 kilometers per hour.
More than 80 percent of the railway, which includes 21 stations, will be laid on elevated girders and equipped with special devices to reduce noise and minimize disruption to residents living near the line.

big-dog November 5th, 2007, 10:59 AM it's a very exciting project, a hub of all kinds of transportation methods -- flight, express rail, maglev, Bus, Taxi and subway.
pflo777 November 9th, 2007, 01:46 PM I`ve found a video about the construction site.
It would be nice to see some recent aerials or construction pix btw....

As it seems, you are right, they will go for the zig-zag one, when it comes to the terminal.
What will they do with the old apron and the old terminal btw, once, the new one is finished?

hoosier December 13th, 2007, 07:05 PM Are there going to be new runways added to the airport?
pflo777 December 13th, 2007, 07:13 PM they are going to add one additional runway, so that the airport has 2.
The construction speed is amazing, a project like that would take 7-10 years in Europe. In China they make it in 3 years. (to be finished in 2010 )
I guess they are working 24/7.

personally, i like this design, and many chinese members agree with me!
it's not a bad design, although it's not a bold and 'special' one anyway. But we are somehow tired of those 'creative and daring' project proposed by the western firms. Maybe it's time for a change!
i'm glad it's a 'low-profile' and function-oriented design, and hope they'll put more emphases on the interior!
moreover, given the deadline of 2010, this design probably is the most acceptable and efficient one so far...
ddes February 13th, 2008, 12:48 PM I realize in terms of architecture, Shanghai is more moderate, form and function are more or less at a balance although it means that there are few architectural marvels.
Beijing on the other hand, has been the more daring one. Regardless of Asian or Western architects, the buildings are "louder" than Shanghai.
UD2 February 14th, 2008, 12:12 AM Actually, Shanghai is very loud in this one. You guys probabley see this as the 1970s modernist architecture, but if you look closely, it is internationalism.
INTERNATIONALISM should NOT be used in VERY LARGE BUILDINGS with multiple levels. Because IT MAKES THEM THEM LOOK SHORT AND CLUSTERPHOBIC.
what don't they get about this.

The Cebuano Exultor February 15th, 2008, 07:13 AM ^^ That is a HUGE construction site!
I think they should add more runways to Shanghai-Hongqiao International Airport, though. I mean, that's Shanghai's main domestic airport. Since Chinese carriers use small aircraft for their domestic routes, the need for more runways (than just two) is truly necessary.

So that means the entire Shanghai municipality would have a total airport capacity of 140 million passengers by 2015? That would be insane!
ddes February 16th, 2008, 06:46 PM Actually, Shanghai's 2 airports handling 140m pax per year is abit disappointing to me. London's airports handle much more, and Shanghai is the financial heart of the world's largest country in terms of population.

Largest reason being that most people in China do travel either by rail or highway coaches. Air travel is still considered very expensive by most regional travellers, and the rail and expressway networks in China are very effecient.
The Cebuano Exultor February 17th, 2008, 08:18 AM ^^ But, China's aviation market, the world's second largest, is still expanding...and at a dizzying rate at that. In twelve years time, it is set to overtake the U.S. to become the largest. China needs to build lots of airports (some of them should have lots of runways and huge terminals), expand existing aircraft-handling facilities and loosen airspace restriction to civil air traffic.

Not really. London's six airports handle 150 million passengers each year while Shanghai will have 140 million. That's not that big of a difference. Shanghai will have 40 million more passengers per year than all three of NYC's airports.
The Cebuano Exultor February 17th, 2008, 12:57 PM ^^ 150 million pax for London?! Last time I checked, it was closer to 140 million pax.
And, I highly doubt Shanghai-Pudong International Airport's final capacity would only be 100 million pax. With five runways and three main air passenger terminals, Shanghai-Pudong International Airport could well have a full capacity of 120 million pax. Seriously. China's notorious for underestimating the fully-operational capacities of its airports.
pflo777 February 17th, 2008, 01:39 PM ^^ its right what you write about pudong airport.
But somehow it doenst make sense, to have an airport like pudong with 5 runways or maybe even more in the future handling 100-120 mio passengers, and then this relatively "small" airport handling 40 mio wihtout the possibility to further expand in Hongqiao.
That just creates a huge chaos for transfer passengers, doesnt it?
If Hongqiao would be an equal second airport for the Shanghai metropolitan area, just like a second airport for Bejing is planned right now, it would make more sense.

I got the 150 million figure from wikipedia's London Transportation page so take up any complaints you have with wikipedia. I got the 100 million figure from the Pudong Airport construction page, which got its information from the construction site. The bottom line is, Shanghai expects its two airports to be able to handle 140 million by 2015. Who knows what the real figure will be when this is all done. I am just responding to someone who said he was disappointed that Shanghai can only handle 140 million. 140 million is HUGE. Pudong Airport will have by far the highest capacity in the world. And it will have five terminals because both of T3's satellite terminals look about the size of one of JFK's main terminal.
ddes February 18th, 2008, 12:14 PM "Someone" was disappointed because London's airports handle more passengers. And this place, Shanghai is supposed to be the heart of the world's most populated country.
big-dog February 19th, 2008, 10:36 AM This project is really something. The board says under one roof they'll construct,
West airport terminal (40 mln pax with existing one)
East transportation square
Maglev station (10 lines and 10 platforms)
High-speed railway station (30 lines and 16 platforms)
West transportation square
Subway stations (line #2, #5, #10, #17 and line Qingpu)
East and west bus exchange
All will be finished in 2 years and 8 months

raymond_tung88 February 21st, 2008, 08:16 PM Shanghai doesn't handle as many passengers as London because most people flying into London are tourists or business travelers. London is a bigger tourist destination and a bigger city (in terms of financial importance) so therefore receives more people flying in.
China's aviation market is only starting to realize. Flying is expensive for most of China's population. It will however increase in time as China becomes richer...
You're comparing two airport passenger statistics without looking deeper into the context. Things will change but it does require time.
Besides, 140 million and 150 million are not THAT FAR apart. Considering how London has SIX airports and Shanghai only has TWO...

Let's take a step back and acknowledge that the 140 million figure is for 2015 at the earliest. Right now, both airports have a combined 40 million capacity.
Still, 140 million seven years later is nothing to be ashamed of. Pudong Airport will have a capacity of 100 million, which is the same as all three of NYC's airports combined.

i'm afraid those are some old local residential areas near the Hongqiao airport, coz that's to the east of the existing terminal/runway. The new area for the relocated residents is supposed to be to the west of the site of the new terminal!
The airport is so close to the city, and the area around it has been highly urbanized with high density of residents over the decades.

Of course London continues to grow and will expand considerably with the huge new terminals and new runways in the pipeline. However it's nonetheless very ambitious for Shanghai, whose current total is so much lower, to plan to match this total by 2015 (or even to have the capacity to match that which is what they actually intend). I find this project very impressive overall. The architecture is simple and clean. Perhaps Shanghai's city planners follow SSC/SSP and are sensitive to all the justified criticism of the tacky "spaceage" designs of '90s Shanghai and have now decided to build more classy, elegant, and understated buildings? I hope so. It shows that Shanghai's tastes are maturing and becoming more sophisticated. :)

snow is red May 3rd, 2008, 01:40 PM Shanghai Hongqiao Airport's $2 Billion Expansion Wins Approval
Updated: 2008-04-30 Source:Bloomberg
Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, China's fourth-busiest airfield, won government approval for a 13.9 billion yuan ($2 billion) expansion plan aiming to double its annual capacity by 2015.
The city's domestic airport plans to add a second runway and terminal, which will boost capacity to 40 million passengers and 1 million tons of cargo annually by 2015, according to a statement on the General Administration of Civil Aviation's Web site. The plan has been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top planning agency.
Shanghai, the nation's financial center, aims to surpass Beijing as China's biggest air travel destination as it wins investment from overseas companies including Citigroup Inc. and DHL Express. The country's overall passenger traffic will likely grow 14.5 percent a year until 2010, according to the nation's aviation regulator.
Shanghai's two airports will likely handle 120 million passengers and 7 million tons of cargo in 2015. Beijing Capital International Airport will expand capacity to 76 million passengers a year by 2015, according to the planning agency.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport added a second terminal last month, more than doubling the airport's capacity to 60 million passengers a year. It will be able to handle 80 million travelers annually by 2015 with the addition of two smaller satellite terminals.
Hongqiao airport handled 22.6 million travelers last year, mainly on domestic routes. About 28.95 million passengers passed through Pudong. Beijing Capital International Airport handled 53 million passengers.

Airport to be key to transport hub
By Dong Zhen | 2008-6-28 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
HONGQIAO Airport's new West Terminal will be completed by September next year, as a part a project to set up a multi-function transport hub in the area, according to the project constructor.
The multi-function transport project has started with the construction of an express train station. When completed by 2010, the transport hub will offer transfers between inter-city and express trains, the Metro, long-distance buses and urban bus services.
That will enable travelers to take a train from Beijing directly to Hongqiao Airport, which will be within an hour's Metro ride from Shanghai's business areas such as Xujiahui, People's Square and Lujiazui in Pudong.
The hub will be a highly efficient multi-transport network, said the project supervisors.
Hongqiao's new transport hub is expected to become a new urban center and cater to nearly 650,000 passengers a day, with maximum turnover of 1.1 million people.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/Shanghaiist_Xiaoxia/line%20two.jpg
File this under the2010 World Expo actually making our lives marginally more convenient, huzzah!
Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports are pretty darned far from each other - what with SHA located a good 13km East from downtown Puxi and PVG set squarely at the very Western tip of Pudong. Getting from one airport to the other usually involves a blend of taxis and buses (sometimes combined with metros and the Maglev) through often traffic jam-ridden highways.
But thankfully for those of us who prefer the more predictable human jams of the subway, News 163 has reported that Metro Line 2 will be extended both Westward to Hongqiao and Eastward to the Pudong Airport by May 1, 2010, just in time for the World Expo.
Sure it doesn't sound as convenient as the proposed extension of the Shanghai maglev line between the two air traffic hubs, but it's less likely to draw the amount of protests that derailed that very project...
...assuming the project has been derailed. Hmmm.

it'll be a decent size, but probably won't be the largest. Afterall it's a highspeed passanger only terminal.
It look so big because it includes an airport and public transit terminal as well.

No! The old terminal will be renovated, and used for mainly int'l airlines for Japan and South Korea, with the existing immigration check facilities there...
The new terminal is also deisigned and will be able to serve int'l airlines when necessary...

werico October 17th, 2009, 08:49 AM Shanghai, HK set up JV to manage Hongqiao Airport
Published: 12 Oct 2009 22:19:04 PST
Oct. 13, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Airport authorities in Shanghai and Hong Kong signed a cooperation agreement on Monday to establish a joint venture to manage Hongqiao International Airport, sources reported.
Shanghai Airport Authority has agreed to invest RMB 51 million for a 51% stake in the JV, while Airport Authority Hong Kong will hold the remaining 49% for RMB 49 million.
The Shanghai Hong Kong Airport Management Co, which will operate for 20 years from next year, is expected to help operate the east and west terminals of Hongqiao Airport, the east traffic control centre of Hongqiao's integrated transport centre and manage passenger-related issues.
The new western terminal is set to be completed next year and will have links to the new transport hub in the Hongqiao area. Upon the completion of the expansion project, Shanghai will have four air terminals and five runways for a combined capacity of 90 million passenger trips and 5.2 million tons of cargo.
In 2008, Hongqiao airport handled 22.9 million passengers, making it the fourth busiest airport in the country.
Putong International Airport is the other airport in the city.

staff October 30th, 2009, 08:20 AM Interior decorations on time at airport
By Jessie Dong | 2009-10-30 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
MAIN interior decorations for Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport's new major terminal building were completed yesterday, right in time for its scheduled opening in March, said its operator.
Shanghai Airport Authority said light gray has been used as the main color to decorate the inside of the new western terminal.
The neutral color is intended to make guidance and instructional signs more prominent, explained airport official Su Weiwei.
She said areas for different functions, such as check-in, and places near escalators were given different patterns and colored floor pavings to make it easier for travelers to find their way.
The four-level building has a 270-meter main hall and a 1,740-meter long boarding zone.
Passengers will only have to follow a straight route for check-in and boarding.
They'll have a shorter walk, compared to the current terminal building, according to the airport manager.
Seats and security systems are now being installed, and test running of the whole building should start in December.
The western terminal is to become the main passenger building for Hongqiao airport when it opens in March next year.
Hongqiao airport serves as the city's main domestic-flight terminal, with the Pudong International Airport handling mostly international trips.
A new, second runway is to go into operation the same time as the new terminal building, airport officials said.

clee02 November 6th, 2009, 05:39 AM Really nice!!! a more down to earth taste when compared to other airports in China. (ie. Beijing's Terminal 3).
Knuddel Knutsch November 6th, 2009, 12:53 PM yeah, it does! but only the station, the meglav line won't be ready...
I thought the line was cancelled?
Never mind...do you have pictures of the maglev station?
(even if its not connected to the existing line....
Did the already install a guidway in the inside

^ Now thats unlike any Chinese airports I've ever seen. The signage and the color, plus style is very Japanese like.(Not a bad thing). Chinese are finally learning less is more and a more simplistic approach to airport interiors is so much better.
kix111 November 8th, 2009, 04:19 AM Yes i agree, the old signs, from my memory are blue and white, looks ugly and artificial. And read my post in shanghai construction thread you lazies :p

The maglev project was just suspended, but it has always remained on the gov.'s agenda to extend the existing line to Hongqiao Hub...it'll just probably go underground to avoid residents along the line...
No pics of the station yet, but its existence has already been officially confirmed, as you can see its sign is already put up there in that pic!
staff November 10th, 2009, 08:59 AM Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I guess the project is back on track again-- I just wonder where the line will go and how far they've come in the process.
kix111 November 11th, 2009, 09:34 PM there is another master plan for Hongqiao transportation hub
the aqua colored box is the shanghai-beijing railway, the yellow colored box is the maglev (the airport line and shanghai-hangzhou line WOW), the red boxes on the left and right hand bottom are the future expansion of the Hongqiao airport.

Steph-in-shangas January 18th, 2010, 02:46 PM Am working on Hong Qiao project installing the baggage handling system.
Most impressive building, and quite beautiful.
Excellent use of natural light into this behemoth of a building, with a nod to ocean liner architecture in GTC/Shopping mall.
Colour of Eucalyptus is inspired.
Great project to be involved in. There are 3 of us laowi on site and about 15K Chinese workers.
BIG job!
The building is in three sections, West terminal which is the main plane bit, GTC or General Traffic Centre, housing two subway lines and stations, in theory Maglev (although I believe the extension has been throttled by NIMBY"S so far) and the high speed railway terminal.
The whole thing is about 800m long (as big as the biggest building in Dubai, just on its side!)
The rail terminal is all structural steel, some 80K tonnes. Biggest single lift of a 100 tonne truss.
64 Ha of asphalt is on the elevated road system.
The elevated road that was going to impact on the construction was built of steel not needing formwork, thus huge scaffold to hold it up.
Expensive!

frankfurt was the first airport in the world with a rail connection (since 1972). today it has 2 railway stations (including one high speed railway station (for ICE trains), 3 commuter train lines and an automatic people mover), a third station is coming with the new terminal 3. not even cdg or lhr have that.

I never knew Fraport was the first to have a railway station. Thanks for the info.
Basically what I was getting at in my post above is that the 'Airport+Railway' concept I quoted someone saying wasn't really a new thing and hadn't been invented in Shanghai. There's plenty of airports with an enormous amount of rail connections.
staff March 6th, 2010, 11:21 AM ^^
He was probably referring to the fact that the Hongqiao Hub will be "as much" a railway station (and a local transit hub) as it is an airport-- it is not an airport with a rail connection.
It would be the equivalent of building an airport on top of Frankfurt Hbf. ;)

werico March 13th, 2010, 06:35 PM Maglev extension given green light
By Zha Minjie | 2010-3-14 | Shanghai Daily
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE extension plan for Shanghai's magnetic levitation train, the Maglev, is back on track.
The Ministry of Railways chief planner, Zheng Jian, said yesterday China had agreed to build a Maglev line between Shanghai and Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang Province.
The project is under careful consideration, Zheng said during a press conference on high-speed railway construction and development in China on the sidelines of the Third Session of the 11th National People's Congress in Beijing.
The line will start construction this year, Xinhua news agency reported.
It is also the only Maglev line in the medium and long-term plan, Zheng said.
First approved by the State Council four years ago in 2006, the extension was suspended in 2007 because residents along the line were worried that it would emit radiation and cause sickness.
An assessment released by environmental authorities, however, showed the extended project was safe.
Prior to the suspension, the Shanghai-Hangzhou Maglev line was expected to be in operation before the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
The top speed of the Maglev railway will be 450 kilometers per hour, but it will be limited to 200 kilometers per hour in the city's downtown areas.
Experts said it would take about half an hour to travel from Shanghai to Hangzhou, a trip which usually takes one and an half hours on the current service.
The new link will be 199.5 kilometers, about 24 kilometers longer than that included in the 2006 plan, said Xinhua. The line will also contain a downtown section of about 34 kilometers which is expected to connect the city's two international airports, Pudong and Hongqiao.
With a total cost of 22 billion yuan (US$3.22 billion), the new Maglev is expected to further beef up links between Shanghai and Hangzhou and boost cooperation among areas in the Yangtze River Delta.
It will set up two stops, Jiaxing and Hangzhou, within the section in Zhejiang Province.
Launched in 2003, Shanghai has the country's only Maglev route which is 31 kilometers long, between Metro Line 2's Longyang Road Station and Pudong airport. The single ticket price for the route is 50 yuan.
urbanfan89 March 13th, 2010, 10:14 PM ^^ How many times has that maglev line been "approved" only to be suspended?
aodili March 14th, 2010, 12:42 PM Why should they build the maglev line when they have just invested 4.4 billion dollars into a conventional high-speed railway line between Shanghai/Hongqiao and Hangzhou? The new conventional line will
start commercial operation before the Expo and will only take 38 minutes with a top speed of 350 km/h.
I don't believe any maglev plans - they will not build a parallel project terminating at the same station (Hongqiao) that takes a similar traveling time.

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/m/hangzhou/e/2010-01/25/content_9370116.htm
Because:
1. they have to bail out the existing experimental maglev line in Pudong, which is in financial deficit for years, by extending it to Hongqiao airport and Hangzhou to attract more passengers.
2. they believe there have to be more lines between Shanghai and Hangzhou, with the future economic development in this area.
3. Given the fact that Pudong Airport is far from Hongqiao Airport in Puxi, maglev is a good way to connect the both airports efficiently, in order to build Shanghai into an international aviation hub.
zergcerebrates March 16th, 2010, 09:15 AM What a huge facility. Seems like the materials are pretty good, the only thing i dont like about this airport are those red words on top of the airport. UGH! Why cant they just make it smaller and use black color and stick it to the side of the walls. Its such an eyesore having huge red signs.

Shanghai's 2 airports on maglev fast track
By Zha Minjie | 2010-3-17 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
THE traveling time between Shanghai's two airports will be shortened to about 20 minutes, with just three stops, when a new magnetic levitation line is completed.
Li Derun, vice president of the Shanghai Airport Authority, said it had not yet been decided when construction of a major extension to the existing maglev line would begin to link the airports.
Allowing for switching trains, it now takes about 90 minutes to travel between Hongqiao and Pudong international airports by rail.
A trip by car takes about an hour in smooth traffic.
The city government was still discussing detailed plans for the maglev line extension, Li said in an interview after a new terminal at Hongqiao International Airport was put into use yesterday.
Li is also a vice director with the construction group of the Hongqiao Transport Hub, which will be a key point for people traveling by planes, trains and buses.
Shanghai has China's only maglev route which is 31 kilometers long and runs between Metro Line 2's Longyang Road Station, and Pudong International Airport.
According to initial plans for the express route between the two airports, three new stations, including one at the Expo site, will be added to the existing line in Pudong.
The inter-airport maglev line is a part of a 199.5km-long line that is expected to connect Shanghai with Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, by 2014.
Zhejiang officials have ruled out this year for starting construction of the maglev service between Hangzhou, and Shanghai, Xinhua news agency said.
A statement from the provincial development and reform commission yesterday said the project had no timetable and was still undergoing extensive feasibility studies.

hkskyline March 21st, 2010, 07:17 PM New terminal's observation deck shuts public out
19 March 2010
Shanghai Daily
CHEN Meifang, 65, was disappointed to see the "under construction" sign blocking the entrance of the Hongqiao airport's new observation deck, a highlight of the new terminal that is supposed to provide a spectacular view of the runway.
Chen was with other four old friends who came all the way via Metro Line 2 to Terminal 2 of the Hongqiao International Airport, to see planes take off and land at close hand for the first time in their lives.
They saw the planes - but behind a large pane of glass.
"It's really a pity that we can not go a step further," said Chen.
Only two days ago, when the new terminal opened, crowds including dozens of newspaper photographers jammed on the deck to feast their eyes.
The deck, 60 meters long and 8 meters wide one floor above T2's departure floor, was touted as a great vantage point for people to see their friends' or relatives' planes take off.
But the site is now locked, and the reasons aren't clear. Officials said the deck's decor wasn't finished, but some observers speculated the problem was safety; although there is a fence around the deck, people can still throw objects onto the apron if they wanted to.
An airport spokeswoman said yesterday that the platform was closed soon after the first-day operation. She said the interior decoration of the observation deck's lobby would last "a couple of days." But she did not say when the deck would reopen to the public and to what extent.
That the new terminal is not completely finished - there aren't enough guide signs, for instance - had some people asking why it was opened in such a rush.
Chen said there was no signboard to show the exact location of the observation deck.
"I got lost at the terminal," Chen said. She asked at least three volunteers to find the way.
The way to the transfer to Metro Line 2 is not clear with few guiding signs, passengers said.
With the deck closed, many visitors snuck into a canteen next door. It's for airport staff only. It, too, offers a sweeping view of the apron.
"Oh, here they come again," said a worker when he saw Chen and her friends swarm into the canteen.

werico June 30th, 2010, 07:28 PM Hongqiao CRH railway station debut on July 1st
After more than 3 years construction, Hongqiao CRH railway station, a final stop of Beijing to Shanghai high speed railway, will be in operation on July 1st,2010.
As a major part of Hongqiao Transportation Hub, it will interconnect with Terminal 2 of Hongqiao airport, Shanghai Metro, and other public transportation on the ground.
It is the biggest transportation hub in China which passengers could arrive by air, by train, by bus, by taxi, or by Metro. In the year 2012, it will become no. 1 hub connecting huning intercity rail, huhang intercity rail, and Beijing to Shanghai high speed rail.
At first, travellers could take newly-constructed huning intercity G train from Hongqiao railway station on July 1st.
Some data about new Hongqiao railway station:
80 TVMs to sell tickets
Total 196 fare gates with 126 entrance and 70 exit gates
Total 157 elevators including 32 accessible.

hkhui September 7th, 2010, 03:21 PM I have a question: Does Mainland Chinese cities use some sort of Octopus card like Hong Kong on the subway?
Scion September 7th, 2010, 04:16 PM Yes quite a few cities have them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_smart_cards#Asia
That list is incomplete though, eg I know that Xiamen also have contactless smart card
hkhui September 7th, 2010, 04:37 PM But all the Chinese cities have different cards. Can one card be used in another city? If not, I am really surprised that they are not trying to standardise the whole system.
Like if you're driving from one city and parking in another city, you should be able to use the same card.
NCT September 7th, 2010, 04:44 PM Cards from certain Tangzte delta cities including Shanghai are interchangeable IIRC.
I went to Hongqiao hub just earlier today and it looks like only a few platforms (on the west side) of the railway station are being used. There's still some interior works going on in some sections of the complex with new escalators being installed etc - the road network isn't 100% complete either AFAIK.
big-dog September 7th, 2010, 05:15 PM ^^ Is this facility already 100% operational? :?
The airport part is fully operational.
Only a few CRH trains start from the high-speed train station, i.e. Shanghai-Nanjing, Shanghai-Tianjin, Shanghai-Beijing (200km/h train)
When I was at the station two weeks ago, a few stores in the railway station is still under renovation (opening in weeks). I guess the station will be fully operational when Beijing-Shanghai express rail (350km/h) is completed next year.
Subway line 2 is connecting this facility. There are two stops (Hongqiao airport T2 and Hongqiao railway station)
Subway line 10 has not connected to it yet (it says opening soon), line 10 will also connect Hongqiao T1.
fragel September 7th, 2010, 05:36 PM ^^ Line 20 connecting suburban Qingpu District and Hongqiao Station and line 17 will be built later.
And who knows when the extension of maglev will start--there is supposed to be a maglev station at Hongqiao hub as well.
fragel September 7th, 2010, 05:56 PM But all the Chinese cities have different cards. Can one card be used in another city? If not, I am really surprised that they are not trying to standardise the whole system.
Like if you're driving from one city and parking in another city, you should be able to use the same card.
It is because the cards are issued by individual cities, not a single central ministry. It sounds great to have one card in the country and technically it is not impossible, but it is just not financially feasible. It took years for Shanghai transportation card to be accepted in cities like Wuxi, Hangzhou and Suzhou. The whole Yangtze delta will have all its transportation cards interchangeable by 2012. The trend is that each city still has its own transportation card but eventually can be interchangeable in the country, but that needs time.

Definitely, see the title of this thread. The space for maglev line has been there. I'm still keeping my finger crossed for the maglev.

I've never seen a nationwide smart card anywhere. In the US all the different cities have their own cards, and so is the case in Europe. Just having a card itself that can be used on bus, subway, ferry, even taxi, is convenient enough for me.
hkhui September 10th, 2010, 03:59 PM So China should set an example and standardise it. :) After all, all Chinese cities use RMB. Maybe the government wants to keep a healthy competition among the card issuers, or they are afraid that one company may have monopoly power.

Singapore.
philip September 11th, 2010, 09:11 AM The scale and quality of the hub is not simply world class, it's Out Of This World !!
fragel September 11th, 2010, 09:33 AM ^^ the quality is indeed very good, but IMO the hub needs to be finetuned to reach a world class level. Since it is still under construction, we'll have to wait and see.
davieb55 September 11th, 2010, 09:43 AM Currently in Korea, transit cards work in most (but not all cities), and soon they will be useable nationwide. Also, we can use our credit cards to scan on and off subways and buses in most cities.
fragel September 11th, 2010, 09:48 AM Shanghai-Hangzhou HSR Station in final testing phase before opening
The 154 km Shanghai-Hangzhou HSR will be operational in October, making it possible to travel from Shanghai to Hangzhou in 38 minutes.
Waiting Lounge for Shanghai-Hangzhou HSR in Hongqiao Traffic Hub, will open soon
(This is different from the waiting lounge for Shanghai-Nanjing ICL)

That would be handy. I think there are more countries with nationwide cards, but for large countries such as China and USA, I doubt if there will be one nationwide card in the near future--maybe credit cards, but not transportaion cards.
