Dubai_Boy August 24th, 2004, 08:53 AM Welcome to the forum Toronto75
Retail stores , well Dubai has plenty already , However , around 1500-2000 new retail stores will be added to the market by 2007 when the following places are completed
Gardens shopping mall
Emirates Mall
Dubai mall
Burjuman Expanson
Zabeel mall
DFC mall
and not sure about the arabian mall to be located in the Dubai land project but its going to have over 300+ restaurants
And about restaurants , you have to know this , arabs love FOOD :P so you will never think there is a shortage of restaurants from all over the world

BulldozerGirl August 24th, 2004, 04:42 PM You can find the names of specific shops that are open in Dubai by following the links to the shopping mall sites.
Harvey Nichols is opening for the first time in Mall of the Emirates next year, and the expanded BurJuman will have around 40-60% of its new space dedicated for Saks Fifth Avenue department store.
There are some sites which list all restaurants in the UAE. But I gtg shopping now.. so will search for 'em later :)

DID YOU SAY "Saks Fifth Avenue?" OH MY GOD...
If this is true, this will be by far Dubai's most exclusive and elite retail address...
PS. I couldn't find it anywhere on the BurJMan website?

Toronto75 August 24th, 2004, 09:43 PM Juiced: Thanks A Lot
Its Very Impressive That Dubai Had A Saks Fifth Avenue
BulldozerGirl August 24th, 2004, 10:11 PM This is one of the many sites that list Dubai's restaurants:
http://www.dubaicityguide.com/goingout/restaurants.asp
But a lot of them are incomplete and don't list some small places like those in foodcourts which sometimes have great food or take-away places. They also haven't listed new restaurants like those in the newly opened Madinat Jumeira (which are all really bad). There are two good magazines in Dubai that always list new places and have reviews of new restaurants/old ones, and cafes, bars..etc. They're Time-Out Dubai and What's On. They have sites as well.
Clothing retail stores in Dubai are from all over the world. I find there are some differences in price depending on where the store is originally from. I never buy from British stores like Marks & Spencer, Oasis, River Island, Miss Selfridge, Debenhams, Next, and Topshop here because it's much more expensive than in the UK. But European stores don't have much of a difference in price.. and what's great is that they get all their collections with some extra stuff you can't find anywhere else which is made specifically for Islamic countries (impossible to find decent long skirts anywhere else in the world). There are many American brands as well.. and Studio R in City Centre has the Gap.
For designer wear, big malls such as City Centre and BurJuman have got some designer stores, but mostly they are for casual wear like the DKNY and CK brands. There is one Lebanese boutique in BurJuman that sells one blouse for AED 30,000.. ha. Wafi is an almost specialized mall for designer wear and they have brands like Iceberg..etc. But most exclusive stores are located in unknown centres on al-Maktoum and al-Riqqa street. Also in Emirates Towers. They prefer a more quiet place.
In the small Jumeira malls like Jumeira Centre, Jumeira Plaza and Beach Centre, you can find some unique boutiques that aren't designer but import only one piece from mediterranean countries or elsewhere, so it's almost like designer. Some centres, like al-Manal specialize in textiles and in Satwa and certain areas in Deira you can find Indian or Levantine textiles of all kinds, from 1 AED per yard to 4000 AED per yard. The tailoring business used to be very active in the UAE previously when there were not that many ready-made clothing retail outlets.. but now they mainly work to make custom-made evening gowns and things of the sort. You can design your own dress (if you want a dress.. haha).
There are places like Mina Bazaar that sell things for the South Asian community mostly.. like saris and stuff.. and it's quite cheap. In Karama you can find cheap stuff as well. There's really a very big range and people of all incomes find a place to shop in Dubai.
If you're interested I can draw you a map of some factory outlets in Ajman which sell original brands such as Marks & Spencer, Zara, and Victoria's Secret (which still isn't open in the UAE btw) at really cheap prices. All these clothes are manufactured in the UAE. They also have Waterford crystals (haha.. and it's supposed to be Irish). Okaidi is a French kids clothing store which sells clothes for around 300 AED per piece.. over in the factory outlet it's 10 AED. The place is all sand and looks really scary but it's great. You see Abu Dhabi and Dubai Mercs and BMW's all lined up there in Ajman in the middle of an industrial area :)
AltinD August 25th, 2004, 12:06 PM The best places for designer closes are Twin Towers in Deira, just next to Intercontinental and of course The Boulvar on Emirates Towers.
As for the Saks Fifth Avenue, I'm niot familiar with that, but I'm sure there are better places to buy closes. North America is the land of Jeans, Khakis and sneakers and nothing else. Please don't mention Tommy, CK and RL. Same quality and sometimes better design for a fraction of money you can find in H&M stores across Northen Europe.
My favourite restaurant by far is (Italian) La Moda in Intercontinental: food is great but above all the atmosfere. The one outside in the sea-faceing tarrace in Dubai Marine Beach Resort is very nice too and the Tortelini and Tiramisus there are the best in town. I don't think the Jumeirah located Hotels have generallu (very) good restaurants, and they are very expensive too.
The best Chinese restaurant seams to be the one in Ramada Hotel BurDubai but the one in Mina Al Salam seams nice too.
Toronto75 August 25th, 2004, 07:02 PM Is there one or 2 ski resorts!?!?
juiced August 26th, 2004, 12:16 AM one
Dubai-Lover August 26th, 2004, 12:25 AM no! it's 2! the first one will open next june in mall of the emirates, the other one is part of dubai land and will be called sunny mountain skidome, opening late 2006.

THE DUBAI GUYS June 21st, 2011, 09:14 AM US pancake chain IHOP heads to the Middle East
By Joanne Bladd
Tuesday, 21 June 2011 10:57 AM
American pancake chain IHOP is set to open its doors in the Middle East after parent company DineEquity inked a franchise deal with Kuwait’s MH Alshaya Co.
The retail conglomerate plans to open 40 restaurants across the six Gulf states, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt in the next five years, marking IHOP’s first major expansion outside the US.
The pancake chain will open its first branch within 12 months, the companies said in a joint statement. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The franchise reflects DineEquity’s efforts to “grow our business by leveraging [our] brands and expanding beyond our markets we have traditionally served,” said Julia Stewart, DineEquity’s chairman and CEO.
IHOP has 1,500 restaurants and a franchise pipeline of a further 300, the company said.
Alshaya, one of the Gulf’s largest family-owned firms, has an extensive franchise portfolio that includes a string of US household name food and beverage brands.
The company has closed franchises in the last six months for the Chicago-based chain Potbelly Sandwich Shop, and a 22-outlet deal for New-York listed chain The Cheesecake Factory
Alshaya operates 2,000 stores across 15 countries, and counts brands such as Starbucks, Pizza Express, American Eagle, Boots and Pottery Barn in its portfolio.
The company employs around 20,000 people and operates 2,000 stores in 15 markets.
In November, the company said it planned to open 1,250 new stores over the next five years, creating an estimated 4,000 jobs.

THE DUBAI GUYS June 21st, 2011, 09:16 AM US pizza firm eyes major Gulf region expansion
By Andy Sambidge
Sunday, 5 June 2011 6:31 PM
Anthony Russo, owner of the award-winning Russo's New York Pizzeria and Russo's Coal Fired Italian Kitchen, is eyeing a major expansion in the Gulf region.
The company said on Sunday that it has awarded exclusive UAE territory rights to Dubai-based Prime Hospitality, a division of Ghobash Trading and Investment Company. It has also signed other agreements to enable growth in the region which will see the restaurant chain opening at least 26 outlets in Gulf countries over the next decade.
Prime Hospitality will be operating Russo's Restaurants throughout the UAE, with first openings planned in Dubai and Abu Dhabi later this year.
Numerous expression of interest were received by Russo's after the 2011 Gulfood Exhibition in Dubai, it said in a statement, adding that the company has set up a new office in the UAE city. Russo said: "We chose Prime Hospitality as our partner for the UAE as their philosophy is similar to ours: a commitment to quality and fresh ingredients while offering our customers a most memorable experience for a reasonable price."

DUBAI — Shoppers and residents are in for a treat as shopping malls across Dubai will be open from 10am to 12 midnight throughout this month.
The new timings will come into effect starting today, in accordance with an agreement forged between the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE) and the Dubai Shopping Malls Group (DSMG).
A directive was issued in this regard taking into account the influx of visitors to Dubai during the ongoing Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) and to drive retail sector revenues and footfall in malls.
The same directive gives outlets in malls the option to remain open beyond the new timings in July, thus making it possible for retailers to keep stores open well past midnight. Restaurants in malls will be open between 10am and 1am on weekdays.
The decision to extend timings was taken after discussions with the DSMG board of directors and retail owners, who were receptive to the idea of extra working hours in the evening to attract shoppers on weekdays.
Numerous researches and studies in recent months have placed Dubai as a leading retail destination in the world, only falling behind London.
Laila Suhail, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, said that DEPE was keenly monitoring the retail sector to enhance its growth and performance.
“DEPE is closely monitoring the retail sector in order to respond to its requirements by creating initiatives that will enhance its performance in collaboration with its partners and the Department of Economic Development.”
“The malls’ extended working hours throughout July presents opportunities for retailers to have increased sales and footfall while shoppers have the opportunity to make the best of summer sales at their own convenience,” she added.
Eisa Adam Ibrahim, Board of Directors member of Dubai Shopping Malls Group, said the new directive will certainly benefit all stakeholders though malls have been witnessing a notable increase in footfall since the start of DSS that has also coincided with the summer break in schools across the GCC. “DSMG is actively coordinating with DEPE to organise initiatives that benefit malls and retailers.”
Nasser Rafi, Chief Executive Officer, Emaar Malls Group, said: “The decision to extend the opening hours of shopping malls in Dubai during July will further drive the retail sector.
The ‘Summer in Dubai’ campaign has already energised retail sales and contributed to increasing footfall, and the extended work hours will further enhance the convenience of retailers and shoppers.”
“Extended shopping hours present yet even more opportunity for visitors to Majid Al Futtaim Properties’ three malls in Dubai to take advantage of the events that we have created. This DSS, our entertainment schedule and activities truly reflect the international status of Dubai, as well as the popularity of Dubai Summer Surprises,” said Mall of the Emirates VP Fuad Mansoor Sharaf.
Bernice Boshoff, GM Festival Centre, said: “As a strategic partner of DEPE and member of DSMG, Dubai Festival City welcomes any initiative that is aimed at enhancing Dubai’s retail sector. With extended working hours throughout the month of July, shoppers have one more reason to make the most of DSS sales at Dubai
Festival City. We are expecting to attract increased footfall during weekdays as most shoppers tend to shop on weekends.”

Kim Kardashian pouring her Millions and Millions signature shake.
July 17, 2011
Milkshake bar, ‘Millions of Milkshakes’ will introduce US reality TV stars Kim Kardashian and her mother Kris Jenner to the UAE to celebrate the grand opening of the first franchise outside of United States in The Dubai Mall this October.
Kim and Kris are making a three-day visit to the UAE and they will create their signature shakes at the launch on the evening of Friday 14 October.
“I am so excited to be working with Millions of Milkshakes and Emirates Hospitality to launch my very own signature shake in the Middle East and I can’t wait to introduce it to my fans in the UAE!” said Kim Kardashian.
Customers of the outlet design their own milkshake with more than 50 toppings to choose from.
Any of these toppings can be blended with a choice of ice cream or non-dairy ice cream to make their own custom shake or sundae.
Kim joins a long list of Hollywood actors, musicians, and athletes who have tried or created shakes at Millions of Milkshakes including Miley Cyrus, Pamela Anderson, Shaquille O’Neal, La Toya Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio, Reese Witherspoon, Mallika Sherawat, Adam Sandler, and the Jonas Brothers.
The Millions of Milkshakes outlets have become a hot-spot for celebrities with a love for milkshakes, as they can create their own signature shakes which are then featured on the menu.
Millions of Milkshakes founder and media mogul behind Hollywood.TV, Sheeraz Hasan, has reportedly dreamed of opening an outlet in the UAE.
He has realised this by partnering with Emirati businessman, Aldaba Saif Al Darmaki, chairman and founder of Emirates Hospitality.
“It is an honor to be working with Emirates Hospitality for the launch of Millions of Milkshakes in the UAE,” said Hasan.
“After being approached by numerous parties across the UAE eager to get hold of the master license of Millions of Milkshakes, it was not until I met with the young Emirati Aldaba Saif Al Darmaki, a visionary businessman from Abu Dhabi, that I found the perfect partner. We both share a passion for unique brands, media, youth, culture and a strong understanding of the power of celebrity branding.”
He added he was delighted to be joined by Kardashian and Jenner to celebrate the opening.
“We will be inviting Kim’s and Kris’ thousands of fans across the UAE to come and see them as they make their own signature shakes in The Dubai Mall in October, so watch this space!” Hasan added.
Emirates Hospitality focuses on youth-orientated businesses and therefore, a partnership with Millions of Milkshakes was a natural fit said Darmaki.
“I’m always on the lookout for unique business concepts and it is my mission to bring successful brands to the UAE that will really appeal to the people living and visiting the region,” he asserted.
“After witnessing the huge success of Millions of Milkshakes in the US, I was very keen to bring the concept to my home country. I’m thrilled to be partnering with Millions of Milkshakes in its first ever overseas project and I am positive we will have great success in our growing region.”

DragonMart shopping emporium to more than double in size
Aug 23, 2011
The developer of DragonMart plans to more than double the size of the Dubai shopping emporium.
Nakheel will add 158,000 sq metres of retail space and 5,000 car parking spaces to the 150,000 sq metre centre, which is already the biggest trading hub of Chinese products outside mainland China.
There are more than 3,000 shops in the complex, many of them selling goods at a discount.
The consulategeneral of China in Dubai estimates that there are about 3,500 Chinese-owned companies operating in the UAE, mainly in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
The 1.2km-long dragon-shaped mall, which was built in 2002, offers shoppers a bewildering choice, including stores selling fish tanks and grass.
The expansion will include cinemas, a food court, department stores and a large supermarket.
Work is expected to begin during the first half of next year. The engineering and architecture consultancy Dar Al-Handasah will oversee the design and construction of the extension.
Nakheel, which is restructuring US$13 billion (Dh47.7bn) of debt following the last financial downturn, is also planning to build two shopping centres at Jumeirah Park and Discovery Gardens.
The Jumeriah Park centre will provide 50,000 sq ft of retail space, while the Discovery Gardens community centre will create a 140,000 sq ft area for convenience stores and a recreation centre. Work on both is scheduled to begin during the first half of next year.
The scale of the DragonMart project is a sign of the developer's confidence in the centre, said Craig Plumb, the head of research at Jones Lang LaSalle.
"Dubai is probably saturated in terms of traditional retail malls but we have said for a while that there is scope for further development of community centres or community retailing, which would fit into this particular mould.
"To some extent a reflection of a shift in the market to more value for money retailing, which is something we have been seeing for a while now.
Mr Plumb says the retail market in Dubai has hit the bottom of the cycle.
"Given the fact that there's no new supply between now and 2013, this could be the next major addition to retail space in Dubai."

Kim Kardashian and her mother are all packed for their first trip to the Middle East next month. Here's what they're thinking
By Kelly Crane, Senior Reporter
Published: 00:00 September 15, 2011
Star in a Bollywood movie, integrate their fashion brand, open a nightclub, interior design an entire building, get to grips with the food and see the sights — the Kardashians will have their work cut out for them when they land in Dubai next month.
Eldest sibling Kim and her mum-cum-manager, Kris Jenner, are packed and ready for their first trip to the Middle East and had an important message for fans.
"We really appreciate our fans in the Middle East," said Jenner in an interview conducted in Los Angeles and given to tabloid! by Hollywood.tv. "We're excited to come and have an adventure with them. We want to thank all the people who have tuned in, invested in us. At the end of the day, it's all about family."
In her first interview since agreeing to fly to Dubai, the reality star spilled all.
Dubai:
"When someone says ‘Dubai', I think of this glamorous place. I think about the fashion, about food. I think about just the culture over there — [it] is something that I'm so not used to. I just wanna go and embrace it.
"When I was first invited to Dubai, I was just so excited because it's a place I've just always wanted to go to. I've never been to the Middle East. This will be my first trip and I'm going with friends. I want to really just see the town."
Her reality show:
"My E! show will be following us to Dubai and the whole experience of coming [to] this country and seeing Dubai for the first time."
Dubai business plans:
"When I come I hope I can meet many amazing people. I want to make some new friends and that they can just take me around and just show me Dubai.
"I am so open to different business ventures. I'm a businesswoman, at the end of the day. I just wanna get out and see what it's all about. I'm so excited to bring my TV show so the US can really see what Dubai is really like and to kind of document my experience."
Bollywood:
"I would love to be in a Bollywood movie. Every time I see a Bollywood film it seems so glamorous. My brother actually went to India once and came back with all this amazing jewellery and so many stories. I would love to go there."
The Arab world:
"I love Arabic food and I love Arabic music. I mean, I'm half Armenian so I love Middle Eastern food. I'm curious to see what the food will be like. I'm really hoping to be able to learn about the fashion. I'd love to take some of their influence back with me, I mean I have my own Kardashian collection clothing line so I would love fashion from another place to inspire me."
Dash :
"My sisters and I get asked all the time to open up a Dash store in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I think it's just really important for me to see what it's like first. I don't wanna dive in too soon. I'd like to spend more time in Dubai and [will] hopefully open up a store there soon."
Millions of Milkshakes:
"I'm really excited to be launching my own shake, because I launched a shake in Los Angeles when Millions of Milkshakes first opened.
"I still can't decide on my milkshakes. I have two favourites. Maybe I'll talk my mum into picking one of them and I'll have the other one and that way I can have the best of both worlds."
Kris Jenner on:
Dubai:
"Salam United Arab Emirates! I am so excited. When we first got invited to Dubai, the first thing we could think of was how much we've heard about the city, the country, the culture. It's really fun for us to go somewhere new, because we can have quite an adventure and learn more.
"It's a part of the world which is really magical for us. We would love to one day create a business over there which we can really be passionate about. Things that spring to mind when someone says ‘Dubai' is skiing and the malls and the tallest building in the world."
Dubai wish:
"Obviously, the fashion industry is what we're really about right now but the real estate business is so intriguing to me. It's the one category we haven't really [explored] yet. It would be really fun to have a nightclub. Or have a building and design the rooms and things, because that sort of taps into the creativity and the fashion we love so much."
Life:
"A friend once told me, about 30 years ago, find out what you really want to do in this world and then figure out a way to get paid for it. Find your passion. Do what you love to do."
Final word:
"My best advice to the kids was always this — if someone says no, then you're talking to the wrong person. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't achieve something."
Don't miss it: The Kardashians will open the Millions of Milkshakes store in The Dubai Mall on October 14.

Tim Hortons outlet in Dubai mobbed by Canadian expats
It is not yet 8am but this corner on an otherwise quiet block on Sheikh Zayed is packed to the rafters. At a Starbucks coffee shop next door, a lone customer stares vacantly out of the window while staff disconsolately wipe down tables. Less than 20 metres away, there is something of a breakfast party going on in Tim Hortons.
The entrance is marked by a cheery red sign in English and Arabic reading "Tim Hortons cafe bake shop", Matthew Clarke opens the door with a flourish right on queue, dressed in a hockey shirt and shorts, and announces: "Come on in, the coffee's fresh."
The 50-year-old Emirates pilot from Canada is not even on the payroll; as a customer on his first visit, he is simply over-excited about having a little taste of home in the land where he now lives.
Tim Hortons is to Canadians what the falcon is to the UAE; an intrinsic part of the culture and an inescapable symbol of Canadian life.

PRESS RELEASE.
Ted Baker is proud to announce the opening of a sparkling new store in Dubai on the August 31, 2011 at the Deira City Centre shopping mall. Echoing the attention to detail found in Ted's exquisite tailoring, the beautifully designed, bespoke store showcases the stunning menswear, womenswear and accessory collections in 1,900 square feet of trademark Ted style.
With Dubai famed for its history of pearl fisheries and more recently for its jewellery trade, the store takes inspiration from the precious pearls once found at the depths of the ocean and the sparkling diamonds of Dubai's modern jewellery boutiques.
Combining a hint of influence from London, Ted's abode and home of the Crown Jewels housed in the Tower of London, Ted perfectly fuses the two themes to create a luxurious fashionistas paradise, which is quite simply, fit for a King or Queen.
The stunning diamond detailing subtly guides the shopper around the store with the space separated by translucent grids and timber walnut flooring laid in a diamond pattern. Silk and brass clad diamond shapes and walnut burl paneling with inset pearl classical detailing adorn the two main feature walls.
Pearl chandelier tallboys, diamond shaped framework tables with glass tops and beveled mirrored shelving provide the perfect backdrop to showcase Ted's accessory collections.
A pearlised glass globe light, draped with bracelet style chains featuring London-inspired charms, provides a glittering focal point, whilst textured sparkling wallpapers, pearlised paint finishes and mirrored surfaces add further lustre.
Ted's collection of antique jewellery and trinket boxes are safely exhibited, along with a display of diamante and pearl crowns, inside a glass case which houses the cash register.
The fitting rooms provide the final regal touch with bespoke wallpaper featuring portraits of Kings and Queens, mirrored doors and plush purple carpeting create a luxe space perfect for selecting and sampling Ted's AW11 collections.
Steeped in heritage, texture and colour Ted's AW11 collections draw upon the countryside's autumnal shades to create a dramatic palette that's wild at heart.

Business reporter, BBC News, Dubai
The sun is barely up over Dubai's Jumeirah beach, but already a group of about 30 fitness fanatics are sweating furiously as they grimace through another set of squat thrusts.
In sand-covered royal blue vests, they are here to get fit and enjoy fresh air before the Gulf's late summer humidity kicks in for the day.
But some have also been lured to this exercise boot camp by an online marketing trend that is only just gathering momentum in the Middle East.
Group buying - sometimes called social buying - has become a multi-billion-dollar business from the US and Europe, to Australia and China.
It has made companies like Groupon household names through their daily emails offering hefty discounts on everything from meals to mobile phones, hotel rooms to horse riding, and beauty spas to brand new cars.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/55402000/jpg/_55402820_bootcamp.jpg
The people taking part in this boot camp got a substantial discount by group-buying online
While each firm operates in slightly different ways - they essentially deliver customers to retailers in return for a cut of the total revenue.
'Big shift'
But despite retail making up a substantial chunk of the Middle East economy - and credit card usage being widespread - it has taken longer to establish the trend in the region because e-commerce is still in its infancy.
"The history of online buying in this part of the world can be measured in days and weeks, not years," says Dan Stuart, chief executive of GoNabit, which was the first firm to open in this region.
"When we started, people could buy flowers, gift baskets and flights through the internet, but not much else. They had to buy from sites based outside the region but we've seen a big shift in that."
Such is the apparent potential that Groupon opened offices in Dubai this year, while Mr Stuart's GoNabit is preparing to rebrand after being bought out by another US firm, Living Social.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/55402000/jpg/_55402822_cobone624.jpg
Group-buy sites like this one are still a novelty in the Middle East
UAE-owned Cobone.com launched a year ago, and to meet local needs and reticence about internet shopping, about 80% of sales in the first few months were done through cash on delivery.
Customers bought online but then had a voucher physically delivered to them and handed over the cash.
"That might sound strange to someone in another part of the developed world," says chief executive Paul Kenny, whose firm now has more than half the Middle East market share by revenue, according to data from research firm Kongregator.
"But until very recently, that's the way it was,"
'Cost-effective'
For Original Fitness Co, which runs the beach boot camps, the trend has offered a new marketing technique.
Tighter economic times and more competition means the firm's regular prices are already about half the 900 dirhams ($245; £160) per month it could charge in the boom years.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/55402000/jpg/_55402824_coreyoliver.jpg
Original Fitness's Corey Oliver says this is a cost-effective means of marketing
And through a social buying site, it recently charged just 270 dirhams ($70; £45) for a month of sessions.
"We don't make much money from the deals at all, but the idea is to get people in and then we try to keep them," says managing director Corey Oliver.
"Marketing can be expensive, but this is quite a cost effective way of doing it.
"And once people try it, we hope they enjoy it and want to come back, even if it'll cost them a bit more."
Regional complexities
Both Cobone and GoNabit have expanded from their UAE roots, with Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon seen as key markets.
And the Arab uprising, which has dominated the region this year, does not appear to have hampered expansion.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/55464000/jpg/_55464617_gonabit.jpg
GoNabit was recently bought by US firm Livingsocial
GoNabit delayed its Egypt launch after President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February, but went online in March, with the encouragement of staff in Cairo.
"They convinced us that even when all anyone was talking about was revolution and change, that people still want to do the things that our offers have," Mr Stuart says.
"They still want to go to restaurants, to have a spa, to go paintballing. Life goes on."
All the region's key players have their sites in both English and Arabic, with Egypt now the region's biggest growth market for group buying - helped by the opening up of the internet, and the increasing popularity of social media.
But Cobone's Paul Kenny says each country needs a different approach - from the tone of language to the deals offered.
"From Jeddah to Riyadh to Cairo to Dubai they all have different complexities," he says.
"In Dubai there are still plenty of people with a lot of disposable income. We sell a lot of trips on luxury yachts, and recently sold four $28,000 cars in one day.
"Compare that with Cairo and it's food and spas - they're the things more commonly consumed ... [there's] less disposable income, so we make sure we tailor it to the local market."
'Denigrate brand'
While the group buying trend allows retailers to create demand for things which customers may otherwise not have wanted - and therefore offer growth opportunities - there are also potential pitfalls says Hermann Behrens, chief executive of The Brand Union Middle East.
He warns that a hangover from the boom years of pre-2008 means places such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi suffer an over-supply of things like restaurants and spas - and that the new retail trend might further drive firms only to compete on price.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/55464000/jpg/_55464246_robappleyard.jpg
Go! Yachts Rob Appleyard says group buy sites bring in revenue during quiet periods
"The biggest danger is that if you're generating trial for a brand and people are actually going to a restaurant or a spa or buying a product, and it doesn't fulfil a value that's higher than they have paid for it, that could dilute or denigrate the value of the brand," he says.
"That's especially true if it's not an established brand with an established value."
It is an issue which faces Go! Yacht Charters - a firm hiring luxury boats in the UAE.
While there remains demand for its VIP services - from footballers and presidents to visiting oil tycoons - the economic downturn and slow recovery has hurt business, especially corporate bookings.
Now the firm is using a group buying site to sell time on its vessels - from $30 short trips out to sea to a $3,700 (£2,400) package to this November's Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.
It is one way to get some revenue from boats that may otherwise be standing idle, says managing partner Rob Appleyard.
But sitting on the plush purple seating on the 120ft yacht Sheleila, Mr Appleyard denies that allowing people onto multi-million-dollar boats for a few dollars a time cheapens his brand.
"It gets people on board to have a look and they're wowed by it. It's showing people that these boats are affordable, that they're not just for billionaires
"Hopefully, someone will buy one of these deals, they'll be impressed and they'll tell their boss - if they're not a boss themselves - and we'll get some corporate business off the back of it."

Porsche Centre Dubai. Jorge Ferrari / Porsche
Fast cars and big spending are back in vogue in Dubai, with Porsche enjoying its best month for deliveries during Ramadan
Porsche Centre Dubai, part of Al Nabooda Automobiles, delivered 211 new cars to customers last month, the strongest performance for any Porsche showroom globally, the company said.
"Our increasing sales figures prove that the Porsche brand is growing significantly in the UAE," said Vijay Rao, the general manager of Porsche Centre Dubai. "In combination, I believe the retail market for passenger cars in general has also grown slightly."
In the first eight months of this year, deliveries of Porsche cars were 46 per cent higher than in the same period last year, indicating a booming market in Dubai that is bucking the recent economic gloom.
"Our typical target group is immensely diverse, including both young and old, male and female with interest in sports, luxurious goods all the way to aficionados and collectors," said Mr Rao.
Dubai beat its own worldwide record of 207 new car deliveries, which it set in March 2008.
"I think regionally the market is recovering. The Middle East is doing really well," said Pierluigi Bellini, the associate director at IHS Automotive, a global consultancy.
Retailers and car dealerships across the UAE have reported strong growth in sales this year, with many companies' sales exceeding last year's, often by more than 20 per cent.
Mr Bellini cautioned that deliveries of Porsche cars did not necessarily translate directly to sales in August because some customers might have bought their cars in the months before Ramadan.
"Maybe Porsche are selling very well, but they might have also had a backlog in deliveries," he said.
The Porsche Cayenne remains the top seller for the brand, accounting for 63 per cent of all deliveries, followed by the Panamera at 26 per cent.
Porsche recently announced the arrival of the Panamera Turbo S and will launch the latest 911 model early next year.

British luxury retailer Alfred Dunhill will open its third overseas restaurant in Dubai’s Jumeirah Emirates Towers in early 2012, the company said Monday.
The launch of Alfie's Restaurant and Lounge is scheduled for January 2012, to coincide with the opening of the company’s new Dunhill fashion store in the same location.
The Dubai restaurant will be Dunhill’s first in the Middle East and its third worldwide, following in the footsteps of existing venues in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
“We are very excited about this new venture into one of Dubai’s most iconic destinations,” said Nader Elmir, general manager of Alfred Dunhill, Europe & Middle East.
Established in the 1890s in London, the company specialises in luxury products for men, including clothing, jewellery and leather goods. Alfred Dunhill operates nearly 220 stores worldwide.

US reality TV star Kim Kardashian said Monday she wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to open a Kardashian hotel or night club in Dubai if the opportunity was right.
Speaking to Arabian Business ahead of her trip to the emirate next week, the ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ star said a new business venture in the UAE would enable the family to travel to Gulf state on a regular basis.
“I’m just excited to meet new people and see what other business opportunities are out there other than what I’ve already have got on,” she said. “Absolutely [I would look at real estate], if it made sense and there was something there.
“I’m hoping that I fall in love with the Middle East. I want to go out there all the time. I want to bring my sisters so I hope the right opportunity comes about and I’m able to really do my homework and research some great real estate opportunities or other opportunities in general,” she added.
Kardashian’s mother and manager, Kris Jenner, said the family may also look at opening a nightclub and a branch of retail outlet Kardashian Khaos.
The brand’s first boutique is due to open in Las Vegas at The Mirage in November.
“I would love the opportunity to help design a hotel and get into that business or maybe open a club, like a Kardashian experience, I think it would be really amazing,” Jenner told Arabian Business. “We’re opening up a store in Vegas called Kardashian Khaos and I would love to bring that to Dubai, it would be fun. We consider it a great opportunity to see what’s going on.”
Compared to the US, the Dubai club scene is relatively untapped, Kim said.
“It’s something we have had offers out here in the States but it’s very saturated out here. I think it would be really fun to have something in a place we can go away and have fun.”
Kardashian is set to launch the first overseas branch of US-brand Millions of Milkshakes in Dubai Mall next week. The 30-year-old shot to fame along with her family in the reality TV show, ‘Keeping up With The Kardashians’. The hit television show has spawned several spinoffs, the latest of which features Kim and her sister Kourtney opening their boutique DASH in New York City.
In December, Kardashian became Hollywood’s top earning reality star, earning an estimated $6m from her various enterprises. The star lends her name to a host of products including skincare, swimwear and also promotes the weight loss product Quick Trim.
Kardashian said any business venture she did take on in Dubai she would be fully involved in.
“It might seem like we have a lot going on but when we do choose to put our name on something it’s not just putting our name on it, its fully being involved, every step of the way,” she said.
“If I do take on an opportunity in Dubai or Abu Dhabi or wherever, I will be so involved and I’ll have to come back constantly. So I wouldn’t take on the opportunity unless it’s something I really wanted to do because there are so many things going on here in the States.”

Tim Hortons to open 120 GCC stores by 2016
Tim Hortons, Canada’s largest restaurant chain, plans to open 120 stores in the GCC within the next five years, the CEO of its local franchise partner, Apparel Group, has said.
The coffee shop chain, which opened its first restaurant in Dubai in September, will open four new restaurants in the UAE before the end of 2011.
“With the growth in Canadian expatriates and the number of travellers who now visit the country, we know the popularity of the brand will grow here,” Nilesh Ved, chairman and CEO of Apparel Group, said in a statement.
UAE branches will include Deira City Centre, Dubai Outlet Mall and Mushrif Mall in Abu Dhabi. The brand is also in talks with other mall operators for further expansion, David Roy, managing director for international operations for Tim Hortons said.
“We’re certainly pleased with the initial guest reaction [in the first store], particularly during the weekends when it’s been very busy with families,” he said.
“We don’t have a specific timeframes for the other markets yet but certainly our focus will be on the UAE,” he added.
Tim Hortons, named after the hockey player who founded the brand in 1964, is something of an institution in Canada with more than 3,600 outlets worldwide. In its home market the brand has a 40 percent market share of all quick service restaurants and serves up to two billion cups of coffee every year.
The UAE is home to an estimated 27,000 Canadian expatriates and the Gulf state is Canada’s largest trade partner in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The first UAE branch of Tim Hortons in Downtown Dubai was mobbed by Canadians before it even opened last month.
“I went there when it first opened and there were these queues coming out the door and they were all Canadians so it’s actually bringing all of these Canadians together. It even tastes the same, it tastes like home,” said Canadian expat Heather Chuter.
“I think it’s reminiscent of routine for us, it’s a part of a daily routine so you go in the morning, or for lunch, it’s something that joints people together,” said Canadian Nicole Rogers. “It really is something people go quite crazy for; there was even one in Kandahar at the military base,” she added.
Tim Hortons in August reported a 1.5 percent increase in profit as it passed on higher coffee costs to customers and saw its US sales increase. The chain, which has previously struggled to replicate its success in the US, said sales in the US increased 6.6 percent and 3.8 percent in Canada.

Deira City Centre has expanded the number of outlets in the mall, joining a number of other shopping centres in Old Dubai that are adding retail space.
The mall has added 55 stores and restaurants, a total of 3,065 square metres of retail, to the 370 businesses it already accommodates.
"Our expansion is creating an enhanced experience for both our loyal customers and new visitors to the mall from new shopping experiences, new amenities and greater accessibility on all fronts," said Fuad Al Najjar, the asset director for the mall.
The new brands at the mall include Tommy Hilfiger, Marks & Spencer, Toys 'R' Us and a 2,000-sq metre Fitness First. More than 15 speciality gold and jewellery stores have also reopened or been added to the mall's retail mix.
Both BurJuman mall and Al Ghurair Centre recently announced expansions as they try to compete with newer, bigger malls in the new parts of Dubai.
Al Ghurair is spending Dh2 billion (US$544.5 million) to add 150 stores to the current 200, and BurJuman is to be increased by 25 per cent in size to nearly 93,000 sq metres.
Visitor numbers at the malls have increased since the opening of the Dubai Metro's Green Line, while Deira City Centre is building a bridge to connect shoppers to the transport system.

http://www.kippreport.com/image.php/mall-200.jpg?width=200&image=http://www.kippreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mall-200.jpg
Dubai one hit wonder Rohit Iyengar once passionately asked, “How many stores do they have here (Dubai Mall)”? And though a loud and somewhat confused “Over one thousand” came as response, Iyengar need not be so overwhelmed by shopping options at the Dubai Mall—at least not anymore. After all, Emaar’s decision to review the leasing contracts of the not-so hot retail outlets at the mall means that the mall will soon boast of fewer shops.
Mohi-Din BinHendi, the president of BinHendi Enterprises, said: “All the malls, after they open, re-adjust their clients and customers … (the mall) “is filtering out businesses that are not really adding value by their existence in the mall.”
SUSPICIOUS SHOP-WEEDING
Of course the Dubai Mall shake up isn’t the first dramatic mall review we are to see this year. Earlier this year BurJuman announced similar plans when it asked 100 of the 300+ shops within it to leave. Eisa Ibrahim, the general manager for the mall, had something of a spooky “swimming with the fishes” Mafioso-like tone when he told The National “There are different ways to make it easy for someone to move out or make it difficult for them to stay, there are tactics.”
Now BurJuman, having significantly fallen from its “major mall” status back in the ‘90’s to an unknown pink block in the heart of Karama/Bur Dubai, surely does need a bit of a shake up.
TWO SIDES OF THE COIN
But when it comes to Dubai Mall, we can’t help but wonder if the management is right in issuing a rather threatening warning to those businesses that are willing to put out that much of money to rent out a shop in the world’s largest shopping mall.
After all, do we need bring up the story of Saudi’s Retail Group Gulf which as of late last month closed down more than 40 stores in Dubai, selling of some of its franchises to other retailers. The main complaint? High rents, of course!
Simon Marshall, the chief executive of Fawaz Alhokair (the company that has a majority stake in Retail Group Gulf) told The National: “There’s two sides to Dubai. There’s a side where you have malls that are offering good rental rates but don’t get the footfall to support the model and then you have malls that are getting the footfall but, because of the rates, don’t support the model either. It’s a bit of a lose-lose at this moment in time.”
A rather pertinent statement, one that describes both ends of the retail scene: the Burjumans and the Dubai Malls of Dubai. Now, we aren’t going to suggest that a mall shouldn’t have the ability to determine which retail outlets set up shop in their mall, of course the shops are a main attraction, but consider just how expensive retail space is. According to a Jones Lang LaSalle report retail space in malls go for no less than Dh2,750 per square metre.
Now also consider that Dubai currently holds the record for having the heaviest concentration of shopping centers per capita in the world with a record of 1,385 square meters (the highest in the world).
The emirate is closely followed by the United States of America with 1,028 square meters per 1,000 people – much higher than Europe’s 231 square metres per 1,000 people.
Given that Dubai already has a rather unsustainable oversupply of malls, is shooing away retail outlets from your mall because they aren’t, excuse the term, hot enough, really a wise thing to do? After all, do you know how many malls are there in Dubai? Take it away Rohit!

Dubai’s developers, battered by three years of falling prices for homes and offices, are seeking refuge in retail assets as shopping tourism powers the economy.
Emaar Properties PJSC (EMAAR) said today it’s expanding the Dubai Mall, the world’s biggest, by 1 million square feet (92,903 square meters) as retail accounts for a growing share of the company’s income. Nakheel PJSC, the government-owned company that restructured $16.1 billion of debt last year, is adding to its Dragon Mart shopping center and trying to raise funds to build a cluster of restaurants and stores at the tip of its Palm Jumeirah artificial island.
“Most developers are looking to build recurring revenues because there are so few property sales happening right now,” said Patrick Gaffney, an analyst at HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd. “The sectors that are doing best are retail and hotels because of strong tourist arrivals.”
Dubai’s malls and shops have become more attractive after home values fell by more than 65 percent from their 2008 peak while retail sales have been rising since 2009. Developers that don’t already generate significant revenue from shopping assets will struggle to get a foothold in the market because little is being built or sold and banks are reluctant to finance any type of development in the emirate, including retail, Gaffney said.
Retail revenue in the United Arab Emirates probably increased 5.3 percent last year to 113 billion dirhams ($31 billion) Business Monitor International estimated. That will probably rise to 120 billion dirhams this year and 157 billion dirhams by 2015, it said.
Biggest Mall Owner
Majid Al Futtaim Holding LLC (0115682D), the operator of Carrefour SA (CA) stores in the Middle East, is the largest owner of shopping malls in Dubai. The closely held developer this month raised $400 million selling Islamic bonds for the first time as part of a $1 billion program. Last month the company reported an 18 percent increase in revenue in its home market and said 2011 was its most successful year since being founded in 1992.
Majid Al Futtaim priced its $400 million, five-year Islamic bond, or sukuk, at a rate of 5.85 percent on Jan. 31. The yield rose 4 basis points since it started trading this month to 5.66 percent today. That compares with a yield of 7.4 percent for Emaar’s 8.5 percent Islamic notes maturing in 2016. Emaar, Dubai’s second-biggest retail operator, also builds housing and offices.
Share of Income
Emaar reported that 41 percent of revenue and 68 percent of pretax profit came from hospitality properties and leased space including shopping malls in the first nine months of last year. That compares with 24 percent of revenue and 27 percent of profit a year earlier.
“The Dubai Mall is a powerful demonstration of the competencies that Emaar has developed in retail, regarded as one of the core sectors of Dubai’s economy,” Emaar Chairman Mohamed Alabbar said in today’s statement.
Owning the Dubai Mall, with rentable space equivalent to 50 football fields, also helped the company when it used the asset as collateral to refinance 3.6 billion dirhams of debt at a lower price. The expansion announced today will lift the total size of the development to more than 13 million square feet.
Retailers including American Eagle Outfitters Inc., Limited Brands Inc. and luxury watch seller Rivoli Group are opening shops in Dubai as consumer confidence rises. Macy’s Inc., the second-biggest U.S. department-store company, in January 2010 chose the Dubai Mall to open its first Bloomingdale’s store outside its home market.
Left Out
Prospects aren’t as bright for developers that haven’t built up retail assets. Union Properties PJSC (UPP), which is mainly focused on homes and offices, this month reported a full-year loss of 1.57 billion dirhams. The company in January handed over ownership of properties including some in Limestone and The Index to settle 1.1 billion dirhams of debt.
Deyaar Development PJSC (DEYAAR), partly owned by Dubai Islamic Bank PJSC, has 234 million dirhams of debt coming due this year, compared with about 37.7 million dirhams of profit in 2011. The company had a loss of 2.9 billion dirhams the previous year.
“Even though retail is generally strong, especially at the large malls, we don’t expect many developers to build new ones because funding is tough and there is already a good amount of supply in the market,” Gaffney said. “The areas that will do best are smaller strip malls or supermarkets near housing developments.”
Boost to Economy
Shopping accounted for about 30 percent of Dubai’s gross domestic product last year, Standard Chartered Bank Plc economist Philippe Dauba-Pantanacce estimated. The Dubai Statistics Center said retail and wholesale trade rose by 9.3 percent and hotels and restaurants increased by 4.4 percent in 2010. It hasn’t yet released figures for last year.
Nakheel is in talks with banks to raise at least 300 million dirhams for its first new project since the debt-ridden company received a government bailout in 2009. The Pointe at Palm Jumeirah, across the water from the Atlantis hotel, will include 120 restaurants, 75 shops and landscaped areas for visitors with a view of an offshore fountain.
“The retail sector is strategic for Nakheel,” Chairman Ali Rashed Lootah said at a press conference in January. He added that 60 percent of an extension to Nakheel’s Dragon Mart mall was booked by retailers within a week of its announcement. The company plans to add 1.7 million square feet of retail space and 5,000 parking spaces to the mall.
Fundraising Challenge
Even with a growing retail market, Nakheel may have difficulty raising the money after it received a government bailout and restructured debt, according to analysts including Ahmed Talhaoui, the Abu Dhabi-based head of investment and asset management at Royal Capital PJSC.
“Any issue would have to be at a very competitive yield and probably with a structure that gives some government guarantee,” Talhaoui said in a January interview.
The yield on Nakheel’s 3.8 billion-dirham, 10 percent sukuk maturing in August 2016, fell 114 basis points, or 1.14 percentage points, so far this year to 16.83 percent today, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That compares with an average yield of 4.45 percent for U.A.E Islamic bonds on Feb. 10, the HSBC/NASDAQ Dubai UAE US Dollar Sukuk Index shows.
Emaar, which opened Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, in 2010, derived about 23 percent of its 2011 income from retail rents and is now focusing almost exclusively in Dubai on growing sales at its malls, HSBC’s Gaffney said. Tourists visiting the Burj Khalifa’s observation deck can only get there by going through the Dubai Mall.
Emaar’s Head Start
“Emaar was better positioned than others when the financial crisis hit,” said Gaffney. “They had already launched and sold so much in Dubai and didn’t have tons of unsold inventory coming on line. They also were focused on the construction of Burj Khalifa, Emaar Boulevard and Dubai Mall, rather than starting new projects.”
Malls and hotels are the main value drivers for Emaar, whose projects span the Middle East, North Africa and Asia, Ahmed Badr said in a note on Oct. 27, when he was head of Middle East property research at Credit Suisse Group AG. He now works as an equity sales specialist with the bank.
Dubai, the second-largest of seven sheikhdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates, racked up $129 billion in debt transforming itself into a tourist and trade hub. While many developments were canceled, attractions including Burj Khalifa and resort hotels like the Atlantis help bring in visitors who shop for goods that aren’t available in much of the region.
Locals and Foreigners
“The local population is wealthy enough to be able to keep buying and the tourism growth was very strong in Dubai last year,” said David Macadam, head of retail for the Middle East and North Africa at Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. He said Dubai shopping is bolstered by visitors from the Gulf region, Europe, China, the Indian subcontinent and the rest of the Arab world.
Dubai hotels reported an 11 percent increase in visitors in the nine months through September compared with a year earlier, according to the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing. Revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya and armed conflicts in Yemen and Syria mean that tourists in the region have fewer options for vacations.
Buyers spent $114 million in the first week of Dubai’s month-long shopping festival, a 53 percent increase over the year earlier period, according to Karim Beg, Visa Inc. (V)’s head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa.
“Our marketing efforts have reached new markets in east Asia such as China and Japan and even though this strategy started only three years ago, we have seen its fruit already,” said Laila Suhail, chief executive officer of festival organizer Dubai Events & Promotions.
Little New Space
Dubai has 2.58 million square meters (27.8 million square feet) of mall-based retail space, according to a report by property broker Jones Lang LaSalle. About 173,000 square meters will be completed in the next two years, mostly in small shopping centers or strip malls, it said.
Banks wary of real-estate lending may make an exception if the business case for a project is clear and if adequate protection is put into place, said Raj Madha, an analyst at Rasmala Investment Bank Ltd.
Union Properties sold a building in the Umm Suqeim neighborhood for more than 140 million dirhams to supermarket operator Spinneys, Chairman Khalid Bin Kalban said in June 2010. Such transactions are rare in Dubai, where developers tend to hold onto shopping assets.
Assets to Keep
“It doesn’t make sense for owners to relinquish well- performing assets such as malls, which were great source of cash even during the crisis,” said Matthew Green, head of United Arab Emirates research at real-estate broker CB Richard Ellis Group Inc. “Also, when you look at mall owners they are generally companies that don’t have a pressing need to sell. Even if they wanted to sell, it won’t be prime assets.”
Majid Al Futtaim’s Mall of the Emirates, which contains an indoor ski slope, has a 99.8 percent occupancy rate, while the developer’s Deira City Center and Mirdif City Centre have rates of 98.8 percent and 96.9 percent respectively, according to the company’s prospectus.
Dubai’s mall vacancy rate stands at 20 percent, mainly because of smaller malls with low visitor numbers. Most big international brand retailers won’t open stores in small malls as they look for the most prestigious and high profile locations, Gaffney said.
After the sheikhdom first opened up its real-estate market to foreigners in 2005, developers focused on selling homes as speculation-driven investment drove up prices.
“At the time, it made more sense to sell land and residential units because it was less risky,” HSBC’s Gaffney said. Back then, developers couldn’t determine whether the location would be valuable by the time a shopping center was built, he said.

I am not sure an annex would be as successful as an outright expansion... This is what I think they might do.... there is enough space in this area to expand and incorporate the new Dubai Metro link... what do you think?

I think part of the are u have marked covers a road which leads from the fashion car park...I think...
and it cant be a separate structure cuz ppl will forever know it as the add on and not many ppl will want to go there...it would need a "pull" factor to get ppl to go there...but they are not doing that so its a good thing.

Probably will use the car parking area also, too much waste of space there..
No need such a big car parking just generate traffic and pollution , people should use the metro when the bridge is done from the station:)

Nakheel is in negotiations with Ikea to build a major store at Ibn Battuta Mall as part of the Dubai developer's huge expansion of the shopping centre.
The mall is set to double in size and Ikea is being considered to fill a large part of the space, following the appointment of a consultant by Nakheel to examine the project.
The store at Ibn Battuta Mall would be more than 30,000 square metres and similar in size to its successful sister store on Yas Island in the capital.
The Ikea store at Festival City caters for the Northern Emirates and the older areas of Dubai, while the new store target shoppers from Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Discovery Gardens.
"I hope to sign," said Adnan Hegrat, the head of malls and retail at Nakheel. "It's 90 per cent yes. We are having an expansion of the mall and we hope Ikea will be part of this expansion," he said. A representative of the Al-Futtaim Group, whose retail division holds the franchise for Ikea, stressed the two companies were still in negotiations and declined to comment further.
Analysts said an Ikea at Ibn Battuta Mall would be popular and would probably not affect sales at its other two stores in the country.
"One's at one end of town and one would be at the other, so I think it's a good idea," said David Macadam, the head of retail for the Middle East at Jones Lang LaSalle,a property specialists. "There's enough population growth to support both stores."
Ikea's store in Yas Mall celebrated its first anniversary last week, having moved from Abu Dhabi's Marina Mall. The home furnishings brand had a strong year for sales last year and welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors to its Yas store, according to the company. Ibn Battuta Mall is on of the largest themed malls in the world, with about 111,500 square metres of leasable retail space and more than 265 stores. The extension is expected to include a mix of retail, entertainment and hotels.
Nakheel has also announced it would double the size of Dragon Mart, the huge Chinese shopping and trading centre on the outskirts of Dubai, adding about 158,000 square metres of retail space and 5,000 parking spaces.
It is in the process of raising Dh300 million (US$81.6m) from banks to build The Pointe, a retail, residential and marina development on the Palm Jumeirah that will include 75 retail stores and 125 food and beverage outlets.
Nakheel is also expected to begin work on the much-anticipated Palm Mall this year, which will offer about 80,000 square metres of leasable retail space. Al-Futtaim Group, which was founded more than 70 years ago, operates more than 40 companies with 20,000 employees in at least 20 countries.
In addition to Ikea, Al-Futtaim's retail division holds the franchise for Marks & Spencer and operates Plug-Ins Electronix in the UAE.

XPRESS REPORT Published: 00:00 April 19, 2012
Dubai: UK's popular bargain basement brand Poundstretcher is coming to Dubai. It will open in the almost completed Madina Mall in Al Ghusais some time in the next fortnight.
Shoppers will be spending dirhams to buy heavily discounted household items and consumer goods, but the store will still be called Poundstretcher. The company will also retain its famous motto, ‘every penny counts', on its signs. The Dubai store will be Poundstretcher's first overseas outlet. "There is a gap in the market for discount retailers out there. We think we can make money," Poundstretcher's Middle East and Africa manager Cliff Lomberg said, hinting at four more stores across the UAE.
Last year saw Poundstretcher made its first profit in six years, posting a Dh8.1 million profit.
