UAE_isthebest December 28th, 2010, 02:47 PM What is so difficult to build a new railway system? Egypt needs: new tracks for high-speed trains, modern safety systems, modern new high-speed trains, state-of-the-art control centers, new maintenance facilities, New stations and training facilities for the crew. What makes this impossible?... If Morrocco, Algeria, Tunesia and Turkey can build a proper modern railway then can Egypt do that to!

Yeah and then the tourist will take the road by the train instead of taking bus to evitate road accident.
Private Eye December 28th, 2010, 04:43 PM ENR is still corrupt and inefficient and the entire rail service is embarrassingly bad. All of those Sleeping, Tourbini, Faransawi, Espani are outdated and garbage. They should turn it into a holding company following the example of EgyptAir because privatizing parts of ENR simply did nothing to improve the service.

I don't think they will hear some thing from us, but the best way for a railway modernization is to do a good competition in the sub region like what's happend btween Algerians and Moroccans.
Saudi and Libyans start a big program for build and modernized their railway, maybe Egypt will do the same..... i don't understand why they don't do it before.
Egyptian railways have more users than algerian and moroccan one, and touristes who visiting Egypt use it a lot ....
xAbd0o December 28th, 2010, 08:32 PM That what have been saying for decade here look at our telecommunication industry and how superior and fast growing it is? its all thanks to the public sector creating compition. We need the same in aviation and other public transports
xAbd0o December 29th, 2010, 04:28 AM Today a new union was build by our minister rashid.
A union for the top 100 companies in the middle east and north africa.
This was made to increase the private sector role in the arab world.
Good news huh? Now its matter of time and the private sector will rule Egypt.
Btw its been said that there budget for start is 500billion dollars.

Gadiri January 9th, 2011, 05:15 AM Alstom delivers first renovated trainset for line 1 of the Cairo metro

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/7238/alstomtransportnasratti.jpg (http://img195.imageshack.us/i/alstomtransportnasratti.jpg/)
On 1st January 2011, during a ceremony hosted by Egyptian Transport Minister Alaa Fahmy, Alstom delivered the first renovated trainset for line 1 of the Cairo metro.
This delivery was part of a renovation contract signed by Alstom and Cairo Metro Organization in 2007. The contract, worth €19 million, involves upgrading the braking, traction and electrical systems on 52 metro trainsets, as well as repainting the interior and exterior surfaces. The renovation work, which began in 2008 in the Cairo Metro Organization’s workshops in Tura, should continue until 2014.
With 9 cars each (3 trailers and 6 power cars), the line 1 metro trainsets were supplied by Alstom in 1982. Line 1, Cairo’s oldest metro line, was put into service in 1981 and now has 35 stations. The renovation will eventually enable the trains to increase their frequency due to their improved availability and to carry up to 60,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

omarcurry October 20th, 2011, 12:17 AM What makes this impossible?... If Morrocco, Algeria, Tunesia and Turkey can build a proper modern railway then can Egypt do that to!
It comes as no surprise that Turkey can build a modern railway system since Turkey has a much larger GDP than that of Egypt (even when combined with Algeria, Morrocco, and Tunesia) with a much larger budget for infrastructure works. Especially since the last the five years, there has been a surge on spending on improving and building new train networks. More specifically, on HSR. As of recently, 3 cities are connected via high-speed rail Ankara, Konya, and Eskishehir.
Take a look at this

UAE_isthebest October 24th, 2011, 07:09 PM Looking good! Very nice interior. :) But I wished they paid more attention to the platforms. I don't see any (electronic) departure screens on the platforms and also it looks like the big departure display in the main hall is only in Arabic and no English which is weird because I think the line between Cairo and Alexandria has a lot potential for tourism.
But after all it's a very good looking station and I hope it will stay clean and proper the coming years. Mabrouk Cairo!
Azmat October 24th, 2011, 07:38 PM It looks amazing, I'm happy they're renovating the major railway stations. Hopefully they'll start fixing the trains and the railways now. :)
xAbd0o November 10th, 2011, 10:37 PM According to the current minister. By the end of this year they are going to finish renovating 12 stations and then they will do 10 station every year. Sounds cool :)
Gadiri March 2nd, 2012, 01:48 AM Modernization of the Cairo-Port Said signaling system
The Egyptian Railways awarded to Italferr the task to prepare the modernization of the signaling system of two lines on Corridor 4 of the Egyptian infrastructure: Benha-Zagazig-El Ismalia-El Qantara and Zagazig-Abu-Kebir, for a total track length of 170 km.
During the first phase Italferr will:
• draft technical specifications of the new systems
• prepare the tendering documents for the following Design and Works Contracts
• assist the Customer during the tender procedure until the awarding of the General Contractor who will implement and put into operation the new systems .
In the second phase, Italferr will act as Work Supervisor of the awarded General Contractor .
The two phases will last totally for a total period of at least 5 years.
The first phase activities started in October 2010 and will end in October 2012
.

Ticketgunzel May 10th, 2012, 10:42 AM Hello to all...
Just wondering if some kind people can let me know the class of these tickets, I suspect they are second class mostly, however the green colored tickets I am sure they are third class travel only.
However it would be good to know the departing and arrival stations too.
I have a small but interesting Egyptian ticket collection going back to the 1900s and before including Palestine railway issues from El Kantara and through issues from Cairo to Jerusalem and other places in the neighbours territory.
Thank you for any help!

The government estimated that the total budget for the Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA) for the 2012-2013 fiscal year will be EGP 10.8bn and that the deficit will approximately be EGP 1.2bn.
Total expenditures will be approximately EGP 5.2bn, compared to EGP 4bn in revenues.
Hany Hegab, President of the ERA, predicted that revenues would increase in the current fiscal year.
The ERA will also take in income from merchandise, rent from malls at the Ramses and Sidi Gaber stations totalling EGP 50m, and rent from land owned by the Authority, which equals approximately 190 million square meters.
The ERA is planning to invest in a number of improvements to the railway system by adding 584 new cars to the existing fleet, with 212 air conditioned units to be manufactured by the company.
The ERA will also spend EGP 150m to add 116 French cars in the current SIMAF fiscal year.
In addition, the ERA will develop 200 kilometres in new railway tracks on the Aswan-Cairo line and will replace the mechanical railways signals on the Banha-Alexandria and Beni Suef-Alexandria lines with new electronic systems.
An EGP 2.7 billion World Bank loan will fund the improvements.
The ERA will also complete the first stage of an EGP 400 million project to build new rail crossings in the coming December, which will add 245 crossings to the existing 1261.
