Mack-kvartalet
Christian Ringnes published some plans for Mack-kvartalet in Tromsø in October. He propose a 1 Mrd. Kroner, 80 000m2 large building with a large
shopping mall, offices, a hotel and a cultural center. A large part of the building will be flat, with a park on the roof, so that you can walk across it
and down to the seaside, not far from similar to Oslo Opera House. Ludwig Mack AS who currently occupy the site will move in 2012.

^^God, that is absolutely terrible! Why would they want to wall in the waterfront they have? A 4 floor high concrete/brick wall isn't excactly what I would want in my downtown...

Þróndeimr
December 30th, 2010, 02:41 PM
^^ me neither. But since there is a park involved in this project it gets surprisingly a lot of support in Tromsø!

The park idea is not particularly bad, but the way the northern building complex is designed makes the project bad. They can still keep the gross area with a much better building with real urban qualities.

Vervet
Tromsø's largerst development project is Vervet (Official website (http://www.vervet.no/)). In late 2009, three alternative concepts was published. The three concepts
explore different usage of the site, one with great urban qualities with residentials, shop and pedestrian streets, one with innovative qualities with
science and education facilities and one with a more modern mixed used office/residential district. The concepts have been made by a-lab, Langdon
Reis Architects and Ghilardi + Hellsten Arkitekter.

Brygge (58 000sqm) by Ghilardi + Hellsten Arkitekter propose a urban district with a lot of apartments, mainly in 2 to 3 floor tall housings with
exception of a 42m tall apartment highrise. Following the pedestrian street going through the district there will be a mix of shops and boutiques,
and some office. Closest to the fjord, a 35m tall conference hotel.

PIR (57 000sqm) by Langdon Reis Architects propose an innovative district with science, education and museum facilities, with a maritime center
and a hotel. The design of the entire structure will be iconic.

Havn (80 000sqm) by a-lab propose a larger mixed used district with residentials, office, a large conference hotel and a very large museum.

Self-proclaimed highrise-opposer Niels Torp wins another competition for a "tall" hotel in a Norwegian city. Opening is scheduled for the spring of 2013.

Rooms: 250.
Developper: Pellerin.
Skybar: Yes.
Location: Prostneset, next to the new Hurtigruta terminal.

:)

... The old design from 03:

As you can read here there have been some issues in the past for this exact height in this location leading to Mdp in 2001:

FACTS | City: Bodø | Area: 6000m2 | Consruction: 2009-2011 | Architect: Space Group (http://www.spacegroup.no/)

Space Group won the first prize in the competition for the design and construction of the new Civil Aviation Authority Headquarters. The new
headquarters will be situated in the center of Bodø on a waterfront property, Sjøgata 45-47. The building contains 6000m2 of office space and
will provide a collective space for all of the Authorities activities.

The new headquarters will be a unique building worthy of the Aviation Authority and will be a significant addition to the urban landscape of Bodø.
Via a selection of carefully designed cuts/slopes the building transforms from a broad base, covering the square lot, to a slender and compact
top floor. The careful faceting of the building reflects the changing perspectives of the surrounding mountainous landscape, and a dynamism
exemplifying the constructive mastery and elegance of aeronautics.

The design moves further accommodate the sightlines from the city towards the sea and allows for the sunlight into Sjøgata. A aluminum clad
bridge, using materials and techniques from the aviation industry, creates a spectacular entry to the building for visitors while at the same time
guaranteeing a high level of security. Upon crossing the bridge one will encounter many of the flexible spaces of the building including canteen,
meeting rooms, library, and waterfront terrace, and at the same time experience a perspective through the reflective surfaces of the lobby to
the sea. The building seeks to minimize energy consumption through a compact building form and will utilize renewable energy sources. The
majority of the heating and cooling will come from a heat exchanger based on seawater.

The competition is a result the Parliament’s decision to relocate the Aviation Authority to Bodø. The pieces of the puzzle fell into place shortly
before Christmas with the Departments approval of the economy of the project and the continuation of the project. It is planned that the
Aviation Authorities will move into their new premises in Sjøgata, Bodø by 2011.

Storstilt ryddeaksjon (http://www.svalbardposten.no/nyheter/storstilt-ryddeaksjon)
http://www.svalbardposten.no/sites/default/files/images/Barentsburg_4.jpg

This info is from Jernbaneverket, and mostly focus on railroad, but I thought I would post it here eitherway as a hint on future development in Nord-Norge.

Aktivitet krever bedre infrastruktur

Konkrete tiltak
1.Bedre kapasitet på Ofotbanen skal kunne

ta unna malmtransport
klargjøre banen for utvikling av andre togprodukter
utvikle kryssingsspor og dobbeltsporparseller
utvikle dobbelsporutredning sammen med svenske myndigheter

2.Nordlandsbanen må få bedre kapasitet for å kunne

møte forventet vekst i gods- og persontransport

Construction update, June 2011. When i looked at the renderings of this building i wan't sure to expect due to few details in the renderings.
However, i was hoping it would look far better than this. Space Group, why do you fuck up the facades and windows on your buildings? (same
issue with Clarion Hotel Trondheim (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=77953459#post77953459))

That looks shit indeed. It now looks like a boring commie/prefabricated office building. Similar to what you will find in office parks all over the country. Spacegroup are also behind the new Oslo S, Aker Brygge and Hjortnes Hotel, which will all be important and very visible buildings in the city. I hope these turns out a lot better.

How is Spacegroups track record besides Luftfartstilsynet and Clarion Trondheim? Can't say I am familiar with any other projects from them though.

Space Group is a young company, these are its first real projects. To me it seems like they struggle to realize what they have on their mind, a common problem with architects without experience. But the difference from their renderings and models to what they actually build is strangely big in this case (Luftfartstilsynet and Clarion).

I think Luftfartistilsynet is even worse than Clarion. I didn't even realize that it was the building from the renders before I read your post. The facade have anything in common. I hope they gain some experience before they start to work on all these important project they have here in Oslo.

Svanvik og Storskog grensestasjon

FACTS | Construction: 2011-2013 | Area: 3320m2 | Architect: a-lab

A-lab won the competition to design a military base in Norway which will be situated on the northern border with Russia. The design challenge was
to create a cohesive complex where work and private life coexist, and where military services meet the civil community.

The project is comprised of a larger u-shaped building which houses most of the functional needs, while the remaining program is organized in
smaller satellite buildings. The main building is centered around a courtyard and the circulation on the ground floor is located along a glass façade
surrounding it. “This gives a constant visual connection between the activities going on inside and outside, with the opportunity to open the
façade and let some spaces to physically expand out into the courtyard.”

The ground floor holds work related functions. As such, the floor has a strict, functional design to meet all the requirements for the daily
activities at a border station, such as training, administration and emergency call-outs. The first floor accommodates living relation functions,
such as rooms and a fitness center. All rooms have a view out to the wild nature or the courtyard in an effort to maintain the spirit of the
courtyard as the heart of the building.

The main building and its satellites maintain a “strong architectural coherence”. Wood is the main material used both in construction and
façades, yet used differently to reflect the outer expression of private or public activities. More secret activities are clad with dark wooden
panels, mirroring glass in common rooms and deeply positioned windows in the remaining rooms. This creates an anonymous appearance in
comparison to the façade towards the courtyard, with translucent glass and labeled doors, where function, clarity and openness are the
keywords.

Sandnessjøen Kultur- og badehus

L2 Arkitekter won the competition for a new Culture and Swimming Center in Sandnessjøen. The building will be occupied by a cinema, library,
conference halls, some boutiques and an indoor swimming center.

Description by L2 (In Norwegian):

Polarsirkelen Lufthavn

FACTS | Architects: Narud Stokke Wiig (http://www.nsw.no/) + Haptic Architects (http://www.hapticarchitects.co.uk/)

The forested, mountain site provides a stunning setting for the new airport and terminal building, with views to the Fiords and a prime location to
see the midnight sun and famous northern lights.

The client called for a sustainable terminal building that would become a gateway to the Arctic Circle region, whilst responding to the immediate
natural context and Norwegian culture. The terminal building and distinctive roof form is inspired by a local landmark; the mountain of Træna with
its dramatic sculpted peaks and the local vernacular of steep pitched roof forms. The folded metal roof touches minimally with the ground to
define passenger entrances and connections to planes on the airside, culminating in a tall peak, to integrate the airport control tower. The roof
form is designed for substantial snow loads and minimises solar gain through its overhangs and vertical planes.

In plan, the passenger flows are straightforward, with check-in and security control located centrally under the tallest, central volume. A fully
glazed envelope connects passengers with the landscape at all times, be it in the departure lounge or baggage reclaim. This relies on an entirely
interrupted perimeter of space, with all facilities located centrally. It is this intermediate space, which is most important in successfully
integrating the user with the environment and in turn the building with its environment. The architects said of the project: “Working within such
a dramatic landscape is very inspiring but provides a significant challenge. Our intention was to create a terminal building that was sympathetic
to this natural and remote environment but that embraced the wider cultural references. We are working with a simple material palette but
expressive roof form, that makes for some exciting internal spaces and ultimately delivers a new gateway to the Arctic Circle."

Hålogalandsbrua

FACTS | Total lenght: 1 550m | Main span: 1 354m | Construction: 2012-2016

Hålogalandsbrua is a planned suspension bridge which would cross Rombaksfjorden in Narvik. It would be part of European Route E6 and shorten
the section from Narvik to Bjerkvik by 17 kilometers and from Narvik to Bjørnfjell, along European Route E10 by 5 kilometers. The bridge is
estimated to cost 2.2 billion Norwegian krone. Financing would come from a mix of state grants and tolls.

The bridge was originally planned to be either a suspension bridge or a symphony bridge, a combination of a suspension bridge, a cable-stayed
bridge and a cantilever bridge, but the latter was dropped in 2008, as it would cost NOK 520 million more. The Norwegian Public Roads
Administration estimated the cost of a suspension bridge in 2008 to NOK 1,860 million. In addition come the costs fro a tunnel between Trældal
and Leirvika, which is estimated at NOK 85 million. The administration is also working on a method which would shorten the main span from 1,345
to 1,120 meters, by placing the pylons in the fjord.

As part of the presumption for building the bridge, Narvik Airport, Framnes would be closed. The bridge would shorten travel time to Harstad/Narvik
Airport, Evenes from 60 to 40 minutes, and local politicians have accepted the deal. The Ofoten Regional Council has estimated the saving to NOK
840 million in the course of 30 years, should the airport be closed. In October 2009, State Secretary Erik Lahnstein stated that he was not happy
with the calculations, as they were based on unrealistic presumptions. In September 2010, Minister of Transport and Communications Magnhild
Meltveit Kleppa stated that the state would issue a grant of "several hundred million krone".

Architects: Eriksen Skajaa Architects, Pushak Architects, Bjørbekk & Lindheim Landscape Architects
Location: Vatnvatnet, Røsvik and Valnesfjord in Nordland, Norway
Status: 1st prize in an invited competition
Client: Sørfold, Bodø and Fauske Municipality
Program: Three Gateways to the Sjunkhatten ”Children’s” National Park

Eriksen Skajaa Architects, Pushak Architects, and Bjørbekk & Lindheim Landscape Architects shared with us their 1st prize winning design in a
competition for new gateways to the Sjunkhatten National Park in Nordland, Norway. The park has a focus on children and the jury found the
proposal’s focus on the mythical fit suitable to enrichen children’s experience of nature. It is a dramatic and beautiful landscape close to Bodø
in northern norway between fjords and snow covered mountain peaks.

”Saivu” is a sami word for a portal to another world. Based on the myths of the sami people and their understanding of nature, the construction
system of their ”lavvo”, and an interpretation of old sami signs, we made the proposals for three gateways to the Sjunkhatten National Park.

The project consists of three separate entrance areas with information boards, toilets, camp-fire places, seating, playgrounds, parking and
toilets. There is also a possibility of shelters for sleeping and other activities connected to the separate sites.

The main element of the project is the construction system of wood and canvas that will give a common expression to the elements in the
park while making it possible to meet the challenges of the different sites. There is also a large horizontal information disk made of gold coated
stainless steel. This disk will contain information about the park and can also be used independently of the gateway constructions.

^^ Very nice. I think we're just going to see more of this, that the road authorities are spending a little bit more or aesthetics for functional things. I've noticed the nice (and quite innovative) ways of warning drivers in Østerdalen about moose:

http://www.h-a.no/Portals/0/artikkelbilder/2011/04/20114117421350_3.JPG

photo: hamar arbeiderblad

The idea is of course to find a better way to warn about moose, and do it in an artful way, so to speak. This costs money (at least more than a simple sign), but we've seen increasing willingness to include such things in the budgets, including the small investment in some design of the above weighing station. We see it in lights and decorations in tunnels, along noise shields, and in the design and lighting of the bridges crossing the new stretches of E6 Gardermoen-Hamar. Driving becomes interesting. Cred to vegvesenet.

Edit: oh well, maybe this belongs in the roads section, but I kind of answered the above post too :)

Kindergarden planing in Brønnøy with design by Reiulf Ramstad.
The building is gently placed in a south-facing nature site in the middle of Brønnøysund, though sheltered from trafic and noise. The kindergarten is concentrated in one building, with a visually clear devidence between four departments, plus the administration. The outdoor areas are largely devided between untouched nature and developed areas. The roof is a part of the planned area, as it goes down to the ground and invites the kids on top. The roof is programmed so it can be used in the educational program and children’s play.

Øvre Forsland Kraftverk
Leirfoss, Nordland

Lysdesignen i

Looks nice i must say, though this is just 2-300m away from the other 15 floor proposed hotel. Is the demand for hotel space in Mo so great that they need two new large hotels? I think not, lets hope at least one of those two go through.

On point!

Wonder how the architect can defend this one. I know it's not all about the exterior, but come on. It's just so uninspired.

Come to think of it, this has to be a manipulation just to show building height and size, and nothing else.
