Þróndeimr December 30th, 2010, 03:15 PM Verdalsøra Barne- og Ungdomskole
LinkSignatur won first price in a competition to design a new school in Verdalsøra. Construction started in September 2010 and is on schedule to be
completed in November 2011.

C. F. Møller Architects won a shared first prize with Space Group's proposal in the competition for the new Kristiansund Opera and Cultural Centre.
The final decision was taken on October 29th, where C. F. Møller Architects was awarded the final first prize.
Kristiansund Opera and Cultural Centre will house Norway's oldest opera, dating back to 1805, which every year arranges the Opera Festival
Weeks - Norway's largest and most comprehensive presentation of opera and musical theatre. Furthermore it is intended to be the new cultural
power centre of Kristiansund - a landmark to the entire region.
Kulturkvartalet, as the project made by C. F. Møller Architects is called, unites the different cultural functions in a dynamic and creative
environment, centred round the main concert hall. The concert hall has been designed to offer sublime acoustics and super flexible theatre
settings.
"Working on the project has been a very inspiring process so far. We have clearly sensed the tradition and pride, that the project is founded on,"
states partner Klaus Toustrup.

Þróndeimr December 31st, 2010, 06:55 PM Åndalsnes Sentrum
The concept competition for developing and beautification of Åndalsnes Sentrum ended just before Christmas and resulted in two shared first prices.
1st. prize: JAJA Architects "Landskapsbeltet"
1st. prize: Kristina Karlsson and Pauliina Koskinen Tonboe "Kom til Åndalsnes"
3rd prize: Jägnefält Milton "Skiftende By"

Þróndeimr December 31st, 2010, 06:56 PM 1st. Prize: Landskapsbeltet
Amongst 40 proposals from all over Scandinavia, JAJA Architects received a shared first prize in the idea competition for the development of
Åndalsnes in Norway. “The Landscape Loop” by JAJA stood out from the competition by showing a “clear concept, analytic approach and
convincing visualizations of the future Åndalsnes”. In total, the project was credited for its great contextual integrity while being able to unfold
the small town’s inherent potentials.
The Landscape Loop is a project that emphasizes, improves and connects the inherent qualities of Åndalsnes to one unified entity. It is a
project that gathers the city’s development within a belt that wraps around the town core - creating a series of “blue” and “green” urban
spaces while establishing natural connections between city and landscape.
The project finds its inspiration in the surrounding landscape that constitutes the city’s beautiful and ever changing scenery where each hour,
each day and each season offers new landscape impressions - and with it different opportunities and new potentials.
Åndalsnes is a small town with 3,000 inhabitants. Encircled by fjords and mountains, the city is placed in beautiful surroundings that annually
attracts thousands of bypassing summer tourists. However, despite its proximity to amazing nature and massive flow of tourists, the town of
Åndalsnes has not been able to create a lively town and exploit its fantastic location.
Today, the town has a considerable facade towards the water but it is used only sporadically by private or ramshackle buildings. Empty properties
create undefined urban spaces that are neither inviting nor useful. Thousands of tourists from the massive cruise ships are met by a vast parking
lot that does not give any reason for a longer stay – and merely makes the city a pit stop in their further journey. The majority of the citizens live
outside the inner area which makes the town appear deserted and lifeless after opening-hours.
It is obvious that the nature is the Åndalsnes’s greatest asset but despite of this it appears absent in the urban scenery. We suggest to
re-introduce nature into the urban space with an encircling Landscape Loop. The Loop will become the city’s new backdrop that gives inhabitants
and tourists a constant proximity to the surrounding landscape – all year long. It will become a frame around the town that encourages a compact
urban development, an intricate network of streets, plazas and courtyards that breathes urban life around the town.

Þróndeimr December 31st, 2010, 07:02 PM 1st Prize: Kom til Åndalsnes
Kristina Karlsson and Pauliina Koskinen Tonboe received a shared first prize in the idea competition for the development of Åndalsnes in Norway.
Amongst 40 proposals from all over Scandinavia. “Come to Åndalsnes”stood out with the “best masterplan concept” .The jury highlights the
value of the proposal treating ideas and solutions for the entire village even outside the competition area.
The project finds its inspiration in the surrounding landscape. It preserves and enhances the landscape elements by proposing new construction
in areas which are today weakening the contact rock-by-sea. The project also establishes new connections, sea side promenade with activities,
new harbour areas and a new housing area with canals as an attraction for new investors.

Þróndeimr December 31st, 2010, 07:36 PM 3rd. Prize: Skiftende By
The jury awarded the Swedish office for a proposal where existing and new rail roads would provide the base for a host of new buildings that could
be rolled back and forth depending on seasons and situations. Amongst other, they propose a rolling hotel, a rolling public bath and a rolling
concert hall.
"We are really happy that the jury took our proposal serious, its not only a good proposal which we are very proud of, it´s also fully doable," says
Carl Jägnefält one of the two founders of Jägnefält Milton.
The jury was especially impressed by the Swedes' proposals that did not propose new city blocks, public squares, boardwalks etc. but instead
focused entirely on the existing rail road network and created something unexpected from it. They were also moved by the presentation material
which they thought had a surreal mood with a magic and Tarkovsky-esk atmosphere that contrasted well with the sober and technical plans and
axonometric drawings.

GSAA February 1st, 2011, 08:16 PM IMO Sunnmøre (and possibly Romsdal) hould be considered part of Vestlandet as it's culturally and historically in Western Norway, the only reason it's grouped with Midt-Norge is because of administrative boundaries (Møre og Romsdal) which don't make sense historically and culturally. ;)
According to Wiki the whole of Møre og Romsdal is "officially" considered Vestlanndet.
Anyway, Ålesund's horrible town hall is currently being modernized into a glass structure, however it doesn't fit well with the neighbouring Art Noveau buildings IMO.

Þróndeimr March 4th, 2011, 01:26 PM Lets not divide Møre og Romsdal to each region, it will just become a mess. From now on Møre og Romsdal (ALL of Møre og Romsdal) stay under Midt-Norge. I moved this off-topic discussion in the Norwegian discussion thread.

Þróndeimr March 20th, 2011, 08:04 PM Arena Ulstein
Lund+Slaatto Architects, in collaboration with Nils Tveit Architects won the 1st prize for the Arena Ulstein competition in Ulsteinvik, Møre og
Romsdal. The main idea of the project is to create a place of sports and activities, where the qualities of the magnificent surrounding landscape
will merge with the bourgeoning urban live of the town of Ulsteinvik.
Ulsteinvik is a small town on the west coast of Norway. The town is growing and a new urban life is blossoming. A recent visionary plan for the
development of the town connected a series of alleyways and courtyards into a pedestrian network which has given the town a new urban axis.
Our project consists of a sports hall and a swimming pool with a local library and youth club. By dividing the program into two major volumes,
which engage a folded ground plane on various levels, we are able to negotiate the difficult site to create a series of new urban spaces in-
between the building volumes. This new urban space will create several important links between the original pedestrian network and the
surrounding landscape and become a new meeting place for the people of Ulsteinvik.
Our aim is to develop an architecture which will enable these large volumes to fit in with the identity of Ulsteinvik, without mimicking the existing
small-scale building fabric. We were inspired by the rich industrial history of the shipping-trade in Ulsteinvik to design the buildings as three
Corten-clad volumes, set into a tough granite base. The interior spaces will be surprisingly light, clad in local timber and white concrete.
The arena will be 14 200m2 large and is planned to start construction in 2012 with completion in 2014.

They anticipate 1.2 million container movement per year, 90% will be transhipped, that still leave 120,000 containers that will be leaving the port by road, the roads around this area are bascially goat tracks, too narrow for two trucks to safely pass each other, even with the new tunnel before Krifast it's still going to suck. For 120,000 container movements per year by road from this port they are going to have to build a proper highway, otherwise it's going to be a nightmare for locals.

Þróndeimr May 8th, 2011, 04:15 PM Oppdal Centrum
A team of three architect firms from Norway, Denmark and Finland won a competition for urbanizing of Oppdal.
Architects description:
When visiting Oppdal you’ll experience pure and raw nature up close, all year round. The destination can offer activities for the extreme sports
athlete and the family man. Oppdal is within close proximity to both Dovrefjell and Trollheimen, in addition to Norway's largest alpine ski area.
This makes Oppdal a very attractive destination. In 2009, Oppdal had just below 220,000 guest nights. In addition to the existing 3000 holiday
homes, 100-150 new ones are built each year. Oppdal county has the largest sheep population in Norway, and is the largest municipality in Sør-
Trøndelag. The municipality is primarily in the manufacturing industry, followed by commerce and tourism. More than half of the county’s 6600
residents live in Oppdal Centrum. Schools, cultural activities, nightlife, retail and other services are available in the town. The double-edged
sword is that both RV70 and E6 roads are going straight through the center. This gives great access for motorists, but also supersedes all
others. Communication to the hiking and ski areas are primarily designed for motorized vehicles, not for other traffic. The center is also divided
by the railway and the river Ålma. A bubbling rural life is split by increased regional and local traffic, and it is time for Oppdal to be allowed to
grow its center, once again connect to nature, and lead the heavy traffic outside the city center.
When E6 is rerouted, new possibilities emerge to reinforce Oppdal Centrum. As the cars are pulled out of the center, the landscape is pulled
in and the downtown is condensed. Thus life, and not the car, becomes the main focus in Oppdal.
It is in this duality between a denser town and a better relation to the adjacent landscape that Oppdal´s city structure would be found.
Precisely for this reason, Oppdal+ connects landscape, urban life and activity in one move. Two primary pedestrian areas in the shape of a plus
defines the main intervention. The green river, and the old E6 road.
Nature is let to flow as a green river through the central areas of the town. It is a recreational trail that connects the features of the
landscape (the ski slopes, schools, sports facilities, leisure park) to the functions of the town (meeting place, bus/train station, town hall and
cultural center). At the same time the town is condensed around the main urban district. The district spans between Ålma and Torgsenteret
and is reserved for pedestrians. It is a condensation strategy, which creates a more compact and vibrant center, along with the creation of
a clear urban hierarchy.

Þróndeimr May 14th, 2011, 08:09 PM ADEPT wins competition in Oppdal, Norway
http://www.archdaily.com/135130/adept-wins-competition-in-oppdal-norway/
The scenic skiing and hiking area Oppdal in Norway is being revitalized with a new dynamic city center. ADEPT, in collaboration with Various Architects and Lalaland landscape architects, has won the international competition for Oppdal Sentrum.
Their winner proposal Oppdal+ presents a dense mountain village containing new developments – residences, holiday houses, offices and retail – designed in an eco-friendly and accessible manner to increase the flow and number of skiers, hikers and activity-seekers in the center of Oppdal. More images and complete press release after the break.
Oppdal is a popular Nordic destination for winter and summer sports. With this competition for Oppdal City Center the area is to become even more attractive by enhanced accessibility and coherence between landscape and city life. ADEPT has in collaboration with Various architects and Lalaland created the visions for Oppdal+ as a practical planned, comfortable and eco- friendly area for leisure and living.
The landscape, city life and activity in Oppdal+ are connected in one main concept: the plus sign. A new main road is placed outside the city to release space on the old main road, E6, which constitutes one of the two connection lines of the plus sign. Based on a shared space concept the old main road is transformed into an urban shopping street for the benefit of pedestrians, cyclists and skiers. Shops along the street will experience increased flow of people and a likely increase in trade. A green stretch waves across the area and creates a new connection axis. This new recreational stretch attaches the functions of the city (main plaza, town hall and culture house) with the functions in the surrounding landscape (skiing center, sports center and park). As a densifying as well as embracing intervention these two primary pedestrian axes create a cross through Oppdal, integrating the life of the city and landscape.
The new city center is densified by 142.000m2 new development containing residences, offices, public-oriented businesses and parking. To ensure a multifarious demographic community various housing types are introduced – each with a private outdoor area, e.g. balconies, roof terraces or mini-gardens. The use of material represents the vernacular, traditional building code and is kept in slate and wood, just as the saddle roof is appropriated for the new buildings.
The jury views Oppdal+ as a unique concept, forging an identity for the development of architectural expression, based on local building tradition. In their assessment the jury states: ”Oppdal+ has a clear and figurative vision – clean, rough and dense – embracing Oppdal at present and in the future; inhabitants and tourists. The working title is innovative, optimistic and creates space for identity and distinctiveness. The jury agrees on this proposal being a good and inspiring answer to the vision of the competition program.”
The team behind Oppdal+ consists of ADEPT, Various Architects and Laland. ADEPT and collaborating partners were selected to participate as the only international team, competing against Snøhetta and Asplan Viak, among others. For further information about the competition please go to www.oppdal.kommune.no.
mjoks007 May 16th, 2011, 12:33 PM Spent før konkurranse (http://www.smp.no/nyheter/alesundogomland/article339336.ece)
Mandag utlyses arkitektkonkurransen for sørsida av Ålesund sentrum. Arkitektene venter spent.

Þróndeimr June 28th, 2011, 07:39 PM WAN AWARDS 2011 - Hotel of the Year
SUBhouses on Stokkøya in Åfjord is competing against 6 other hotels for a international price, its competition is among others Abu Dhabi's
Yas Hotel (http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.projectview&upload_id=16540). This is what WAN say about the nominees (http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.projectview&upload_id=16862).
"You know one of the WAN judges is impressed when they begin to visualise themselves in one of the buildings on the longlist, and this is
exactly what happened this week at the Hotel of the Year jury meeting. Barry Hughes, Vice President at HOK was clearly enraptured by
Pir II AS’s SUBhouses – Stokkøya, an imaginative scheme in Åfjord, Norway, stating: “I think this is really compelling...you haven’t seen
anything like this before and it looks like a place I’d like to try.”"
SUBhouses - Stokkøya, Åfjord, Norway
Remote sheep farm on Norwegian island subtly transformed into idyllic resort
The clients, a young couple running a small sheep farm on the island of Stokkøya, wanted to do something more with the place they
inherited, and perhaps be able to make a living out of it. They wanted to create a resort with a high architectural quality that was not
exclusive, but a place where the uniqueness of the location could be experienced by everyone.
The building is partly buried underground to keep impact upon the landscape to a minimum. The vegetation roof makes it difficult to
discover the building when arriving at the place, while the front of the building opens up towards the beach and the sea view.
The 13 rooms are made unique by using different surface materials and furnishings in each. Every room also has a sea view, and is
protected by a winter garden.
The formwork-boards for the concrete are reused as exterior façades, while small sky domes let in natural light, creating a special
atmosphere and acting as little lanterns at night.
The interiors combine design classics with vintage furniture, artwork and one-off pieces made on site. Every room has its own material
pallet and its own identity. Redesign and reuse of materials, contrasts between the materials, artwork and furniture make every room
special and different from the next.
All the rooms are wheelchair accessible. The hotel also contains a lobby café, meeting facilities and outdoor barbeque area.
Running along the rear of the building, and completely buried under the sand, is a technical utilities corridor which gives great possibilities
when it comes to maintenance and flexibility. The building gets most of its heating energy from an air-to-water heat pump.
Simple architecture, minimal carbon footprint and respect for the landscape were key words for the whole development, which was built
on a very limited budget.

mjoks007 July 7th, 2011, 03:43 PM Yeah, thats probably why he use "kinamuren". When you can't complain about the actual height, you need to make a new term.
Galro July 7th, 2011, 03:47 PM ^^But the quarters don't seem to be of any noticeable bigger size than the surrounding quarters either. The proposal also have three cross roads and plenty of diversity in height, which all breaks up the volume.
They also use the word "høybygg".

Well it looks just like the photo in the previous post. I'm not a fan of it, they have built it in the wrong place, what really annoys me is that Rokke was going to gift the city the money to build a theatre between Aker Stadium and the Rica Seilet Hotel. This would have looked magnificent on the waterfront, whereas the one that's being built will only be visible if you're standing right in front of it, plus it's costing the ratepayers close to 700 million, nice one Molde komune.
KiwiRob September 3rd, 2011, 05:45 PM I was driving past the Jazz House today, the contractor have started to install the tiles on the sides, it's a mid dark gray colour, not white which I think most people are expecting; when you look at the renders below it looks like it should be off white or a very light gray.

Galro November 5th, 2012, 07:07 PM This building in Molde is finished (and may have been so for a while). I just copied the text from another tread somewhere.
3XN provides crystalline cultural centre for city of Molde's annual influx of jazz-lovers
The Norwegian city of Molde has just 25,000 inhabitants, but every July the biggest stars of jazz and about 100,000 jazz enthusiasts flock to the town's world famous international jazz festival. In designing the city's new cultural centre, the challenge faced by 3XN was to create a building that was flexible and robust enough to provide a framework for cultural life on both scales.
"There must be room for celebration in this building, both inside, on top of it and around it. And it must be able to withstand being invaded by happy people throughout the year - year after year”, says Head of Competition and Partner of 3XN, Jan Ammundsen about the Danish architectural practice’s most recently completed project, ‘Plassen’.
Located in the city center and overlooking both the fjord and the mountains, the ‘Plassen’ cultural centre is an obvious meeting point. With an optimal use of every square meter, 3XN has created a building that can function both when a hundred and 100,000 people gather for concerts, festivals or theatre.
The architectural solution is a structure where almost all surfaces and spaces have more than one function. Together with the building’s roof, an existing staircase next to the building constitute a total of three outdoor amphitheatres that collectively accommodate several thousand spectators. During the day the roof offers a café with outdoor seating, a recreational area with splendid views and exhibition space for the building's gallery; while the staircase on the side of the building is an essential link between the city's upper and lower districts.
"Plassen is a compact and chaste construction, but by giving the shape a number of breaches, we have created a diversity in its expression, which means that it is flexible and roomy, without seeming very big," explains Jan Ammundsen, who has emphasized that the building of nearly 6000 m2 and three floors should adapt to the relatively small properties located around it.
The same bright granite is used on all exterior surfaces and gives the building a bright monochrome expression that in the evening is contrasted by a warm red light coming from the heart of the building - the concert hall - around which other features, such as a library, café, exhibition space and performance areas are distributed. The warm colour scheme of the interior combined with the solid hardwood floors and plenty of natural light result in a friendly and informal environment, which together with the many entrances make the building seem inviting and accessible to all.

Galro February 27th, 2013, 11:24 PM I don't understand why this wasn't put at Rockheim ... That seems like the natural place for it.

Galro March 10th, 2013, 04:58 PM The front is really nice. The backside looks like very much like ... Uhm, a backside? It somehow feels like a miniature version of the opera where all the money and attetion have been spent on just one side, but that side again ended up being very successful as a result.
mjoks007 March 10th, 2013, 09:31 PM I think minimalistic architecture fits very well on locations like this, both the front and backside.

Helt enig!
