Deconstruction of the 2 new stands would cost 20-25 mil. USD.
So instead of they want to built for that money a 10,000 indoor athletic sports hall next to Sinan Erdem Dome.

It will be finished in November 2011 and IAAF said "ok, no problem"

Might as well spend that $20 million dollars anyway.

Couldn't find the article, but 1-2 months ago they said that the new indoor athletic arena next to Sinan Erdem will have a cap. of 7,000 :D

There is no article or plans for a new arena next to the Erdem Dome, is there? If so, wouldn't that be lying? We'll wait and see once the World Basketball Championship in over.

Does anyone have a seat plan for this stadium?. I am trying to buy tickets for some of the games and for Zone 3 (side stands, top tier), I can choose sectors 404, 406 and 420. Do you know which one of those is better?

We arrive at Istanbul Ataturk airport on Thursday at 16:15. I was thinking about going from there directly to the stadium and see if there are any tickets available for the quarter finals that day. Do you know if there is anywhere at the Sinan Erdem where we could leave our bags? (small hand luggage, not big ones). Would we be allowed in with them?

Honetsly i live in Germany.
Askes some friends in istanbul, bu they attended the matches at Abdi Ipekci Arena.
According to him they gave their bags to the police.

Honestly i would prefer to find something at the airport or metro.

One last question. Are there any special transport services from the stadium to the Sultanahmet area? The other two options I have found are:

1.Metro to Yenikapi and changing to suburban rail to Cankurtaran
2.Suburban rail from Bakirkoy to Cankurtaran. It seems much shorter and no changes but how far is Bakirkoy rail station from the arena?

Bakırköy is close to arena, 30 minutes by walking, but if you go by taxi of course shorter. But if you want to go to sultanahmet, forgert suburban..

Go to Aksaray by metro, and you can take tramway there, either Yusufpaşa station or Aksaray station. Metro is in the middle of those stations and both stations are 5 or 7 minutes by walking. This is the best way.

For the 2008 bid they proposed a temporary "arena" (18,000) for gymnastics.

Yes. The building was designed in the late 80s.
Construction started in 1993, but stopped ater.
Construction started again in 2003.
