www.sercan.de December 5th, 2004, 08:32 PM The FIBA Central Board has decided today at its meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that Turkey will be the host for the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The 20 member board voted on three candidates who also included a bid from France and a combined bid from Serbia & Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Turgay Demirel, the President of the Turkish Basketball Federation stated after the announcement: "This is a big day for Turkey. We are delighted to host the FIBA World Championship in 2010. We will make the World Championship the most prestigious and important sports event in the year 2010. We will start our global promotion campaign in cooperation with all continental organizations of FIBA after the Beijing Olympics in 2008."
Bogdan Tanjevic, the coach of the Turkish national team added: "This is a huge chance for Turkish basketball. There is a new generation of young players with huge potential and in combination with the experienced players we can reach new heights. Turkey is an emerging basketball power with a young population who loves basketball."
The Turkish bid was presented under the slogan "Let's meet where the continents meet" and will incorporate a strong support from the Turkish Government. According to the proposal from Turkey, the 2010 World Championship will be played in the cities of Antalya, Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir.
The decision of the 19 Central Board members present in Kuala Lumpur was extremely tight. In the first voting round France received 8 votes, Turkey 7 votes and Serbia & Montenegro 4 votes. In the second and decisive voting round, Turkey received 10 votes, and France 9 votes.
FIBA President Carl Men Ky Ching stated: "Turkey is a good choice. We can be sure that we will have a perfect championship there. At the same time, I would like to thank France and Serbia & Montenegro for their outstanding bids. We look forward to the 2006 championship in Japan, but will start immediately working on 2010 with our friends from Turkey."
The decision was preceded by a presentation from each bidding country and a report by a FIBA Evaluation Commission, headed by FIBA's first Vice President Bob Elphinston. "All three bids were exceptionally good. This was a very difficult decision for the Board, but at the same time it showed the big interest from our members to host our prime event."
FIBA World Championship - Quick Facts:
The FIBA World Championship is played every 4 years and determines the best basketball nation of the world. The first World Championship was played in 1950 in Argentina and has been organized 14 times since. Yugoslavia is leading the role of honor with 5 gold medals followed by the Soviet Union and USA with 3 gold medals each. The 2002 FIBA World Championship was played in Indianapolis, USA, when Yugoslavia won gold and Argentina silver. The host country finished with an unexpected 6th place and it was also the first time a USA team represented by NBA players lost a game in this competition. The 2006 edition will be played in Japan with 24 teams from five continents.
Mo Rush December 5th, 2004, 10:55 PM WOW nice place but turkey has been let down so much with bidding for olympics its time they host things like these and maybe in 2024/2028 they can host olympics

bumdingo July 3rd, 2007, 06:52 PM I thought the Sinan Erdem dome was finished?
www.sercan.de July 3rd, 2007, 07:08 PM Not the inside
2 years ago Vestel was interested in Sponsoring and finishing it
But nothing happend.
The main problem was that the dome was property of the conctruction company.
But last year the dome was giving to the city and they announced that they want to finish this arena.
It is planned to be the final venue for the Basketball World Cup 2010.
But the Turkish Basketball Federation doesn't like it, because t is not modern (as i know it hasn't got vip boxes) and the stands behind the baskets are too far away. So therefore they want to built a 12.000-20.000 modern (Basket)Arena.
Actually i am curious if the Dome will have the movable 1st tier. Because without the capacity is only 17.000 (Athletic mode).
bumdingo July 3rd, 2007, 09:43 PM so thats why you dont see many images on the net
www.sercan.de July 3rd, 2007, 10:47 PM yes
there are only pics from the outside (newest one is 1,5 years old i think)
i have only some old interior pics
But don't expect an interior like o2 dome, kölnarena or belgrade arena

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinan_Erdem_Dome
www.sercan.de July 12th, 2008, 02:52 PM Its u/c again. But Just small thing and very slow.
Still unclear if it will be a 2010 FIBA WC venue :ohno:
Kuvvaci July 12th, 2008, 03:00 PM This wiki article claims that the Sinan Erdem Dome is uc but halted. Is that correct?
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinan_Erdem_Dome
it was halted for a long time. Actually construction went at the normal speed and almost came to the end, but then suddenly stooped and constructor went. There was so less work actually And nobyd cared about it for years. Later Istanbul got 2011 World Indoor Athletics Championship and 2010 World Basketball Championship. And now construction started again.

Good news. Will it have 22k then?
Kuvvaci July 12th, 2008, 03:24 PM ^^ yes, project didn't change. It was halted when it was about finished (as you see at the pictures). When you look at from outside, it is completaly finished.

 a masterpiece? Far from it...:ohno:
Kuvvaci July 16th, 2008, 10:55 AM not masterpiece but big and good sport indoor hall.
www.sercan.de July 16th, 2008, 11:08 AM Lets wait if it is good :)
BTw, this "arena" was designed in the late 80s and conctruction started 1993!
g$X.n1 July 16th, 2008, 02:00 PM I think compared with other hall's in turkey it's one of the best!
www.sercan.de July 16th, 2008, 02:28 PM how can it be when it is not finished :)

it's nearly finished ..?..

Kuvvaci July 16th, 2008, 10:33 PM even it is not finished, better than all other sport halls of Turkey.... I love it. suitable for all kind of sports and events, even for athletics and giant concerts.
g$X.n1 July 16th, 2008, 11:37 PM for 8 years its nearly finished
omg! I hate this turkish illness
Kuvvaci July 17th, 2008, 12:56 AM what is turkish illness. National olympic commitie was building this complex and Olympic stadium although they had very less income. Governments didn't support and help Sinan Erdem, who was the president of NOC of Turkey and planner of any possible Olympic games in Istanbul and constructor of all sport complexes. They finished the swimming pool (but open like Athens and Barcelona) and organized international competitions including European Swimming and diving championship. They fininshed the stadium and spent the most of their money. But couldn't finish this sport hall. Do you know why? Because the income of NOC has been cut. All income of the NOC was coming from the small proportions (like 20%) Loto, sport Toto and Lotary. And this money has been cut. Plus, Sinan Erdem passed away. Governement and media didn't care about this hall. NOC was without money and they asked the help of Metropolitan munichipality, but they didn't care either. NOC looked for a sponsor, but agreement of possible sponsor (it was Vestel Electornics) couldn't be achieved.
But although this sport hall was unfinished, it let Turkey get two very important international organization, World Basketball Championship 2010 and World Indoor Athletics Championship 2011.
Now National Athletics Federation of Turkey got the responsibility of the complex and they will complate it.
If government didn't cut the income of NOC this sport hall would already have been openned some years ago. Or it was a shopping center, it would have been finished very fast. If there was a comercial benefit with this construction, everybody would try to finish it. Or, if it belong to any sport clup, like Galatasaray or Fenerbahçe, it would have been finished in one year after construction start.
Demetrius July 17th, 2008, 11:31 AM Guys, is there any particular reason for not being able to find any interior pics of this venue?
Isn' t it planned to host 2010 World basketball Finals? What's really the situation with this tournament and the venues in Istanbul?
Kuvvaci July 17th, 2008, 12:19 PM ^^ because interior is still under construction, although it is finished from outside and as we heard recently, a German compnay wich designs Ankara Arena will redesign inside for 2010.
Mateus_ July 17th, 2008, 01:12 PM Very nice venue! Turkey has nice and modern sports venues! Good!
Kuvvaci July 17th, 2008, 02:00 PM not yet so much. But hopefully e will have in a few years.
Jim856796 November 26th, 2008, 08:30 PM Besides the 2010 FIBA World Championship final, the Sinan Erdem Dome will be hosting two major events in 2012: the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics and the FINA Short Course World Championships.
And the interior of this arena is taking forever to finish. I hope it does get finished before 2010.
www.sercan.de November 26th, 2008, 10:43 PM BTW, its clear now
It will host the final, but the TBF president is very unhappy.
Its not a good "arena" and for 2010 we will make some wokrs to turn it into a 15,000 basketball arena
Best solution would be to turn it into an aquatic centre
Ballota December 28th, 2008, 03:52 AM How come noone tried to get in and take some pics?
You guys should look up to us from Split and Zagreb. We were braking in our arenas on a regular bases. :D
www.sercan.de December 28th, 2008, 05:50 PM Ther are some interior pics, but actually this one is very slow or its stopped.
www.sercan.de January 15th, 2009, 06:20 PM Drawings. As you can see very old :D
I think it was designed in the late 80s.

According to TBF President 2010 FIBA WC Final will be here.
City will make it "fit for the Final. But after the Final we will not use it anymore. Its too big".
www.sercan.de February 8th, 2009, 12:21 PM New name is Istanbul Olympic Dome.
Because of the FIBA WC 2010 RTKL Architects will make it "fit" for the WC.
IMO the capacity will be reduced.
Kuvvaci February 8th, 2009, 07:49 PM ^^ what? why the name is changed? Where did you read this architect issue? Details?

Kuvvaci February 9th, 2009, 03:39 PM Sercan it says interior will be changed and suitable for this turnement. And American architects will design it. I have no fear for anything anymore. I sense they will do a good job.
www.sercan.de February 9th, 2009, 04:06 PM IMO they will just design the portable 1st tier.
likasz February 9th, 2009, 04:14 PM Are you sure that the arena will be done on WCH2010
www.sercan.de February 9th, 2009, 04:23 PM This one yeah.
Its nearly finished.
Mo Rush February 9th, 2009, 05:40 PM nice
Kuvvaci February 9th, 2009, 07:11 PM IMO they will just design the portable 1st tier.
it is important.
But I think the addition of the architects will be more than just portable tier...
they will even redesign the Halkapınar Sport Hall of Izmir wich has already needed it.
www.sercan.de February 9th, 2009, 07:23 PM But it will be still smal thinks.
Buildings and stands are already finsihed
Kuvvaci February 9th, 2009, 10:45 PM athmosphere sercan, it is important.
www.sercan.de February 9th, 2009, 11:09 PM Yeah but what will they do?
Kuvvaci February 10th, 2009, 07:58 AM wait and see... they are the best about creating athmosphere. I am so hopefull. I am pessimistic about Ankara Arena.
www.sercan.de February 10th, 2009, 02:33 PM Do you know RTKL Architects ?
Kuvvaci February 10th, 2009, 03:04 PM I saw some of their works on the web. They are good, and espacially specify on interior design.
Jim856796 February 10th, 2009, 11:48 PM New name is Istanbul Olympic Dome.
Because of the FIBA WC 2010 RTKL Architects will make it "fit" for the WC.

What? I like the capacity of the Sinan e?rdem Dome the way it is. But the interior looks like you can easily convert it into an Olympic aquatic centre.
www.sercan.de February 11th, 2009, 12:00 AM Olympic aquatic centre would be better, because just behind the arena there is an open pool with stand (5k)
The Ataköy district is more a swimming and sailing district
Mo Rush February 11th, 2009, 12:10 AM aquatic centre? where? what? pics?
www.sercan.de February 11th, 2009, 12:17 AM Its just an idea by me :)
www.sercan.de February 24th, 2009, 12:35 AM A member of www.wowturkey.com was yesterday at the Arena.
But the security stopped him :)
He just learned that they were demolishing the 2nd tier!!!!!
So it looks like they will demolish the stands and built new ones.
IMO the capacity will be 15,000. Stands will be rectangular and maybe some suites.
Jim856796 February 24th, 2009, 04:15 AM ^^What? Booooo! They're destroying a good 20,000+-seat gymnasium! If this venue is not going to be over 20,000 seats, then this will be a boring venue and I will dislike it.

I wonder why they need to demolish the 2nd tier! :weird:

it is just the guess of Sercan...
www.sercan.de February 24th, 2009, 12:28 PM Yes. Just my guess :D
Currently they are just demolishing the 2nd tier. But i would not expect a +15k arena.
Actually Istanbul do not need it.
Currently we have git Abdi Ipekçi Arena (10,550)
New Fenerbahçe Arena is u/c (15,000)
Galatasaray plans a new arena next to the new staduim (+10,000).
Sinan Erdem / Olympic Dome is actually useless. Or maybe they will demolish Abdi Ipekçi
Demetrius February 24th, 2009, 01:45 PM But how can the interior works be so extensive? Will they make it on time for 2010?
Maybe they are just re-arranging a part of the lower tier to accomplish a better arrangement of the retractable stands the hall needed to be fitted with, the first place?
www.sercan.de February 24th, 2009, 02:02 PM Actually we do not know anything. Maybe the 1st tier will stay.
We have towait the plans and renderings of RTKL Architects.
Kuvvaci February 24th, 2009, 04:57 PM they are trying to conver it into an NBA style arena...
hknsngr February 24th, 2009, 05:15 PM Everythings gonna be ok.
Kuvvaci February 24th, 2009, 09:02 PM hknsngr, do you have any info?
hknsngr February 24th, 2009, 09:22 PM Not yet. :| We will wait.
likasz April 9th, 2009, 11:37 PM any news?
www.sercan.de April 10th, 2009, 12:09 AM A guy of wowturkey asked the security guy.
So they won't demolish the stands. Its just a small work inside. New temporary stand and suites etc.
likasz April 10th, 2009, 12:35 AM I hope Olympic Dome will be ready on WCH2010.Maybe desing is old but it is not very important for me.
www.sercan.de April 10th, 2009, 01:42 AM Don't be sure.
Ankara and Antalya have problems. I would be happy if FIBA will give FIBA WC 2010 to another country. We do not deserve it
Jim856796 April 14th, 2009, 12:06 AM The Sinan Erdem Arena's condition is currently a mystery when they were supposed to be demolishing the upper tier and convert it into an NBA-style arena (which is impossible). And in 2008 this photo was taken of the arena's interior:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2389/1674282130_0845a338d2_o.jpg
Livno80101 April 14th, 2009, 12:10 AM whats happening with sinan erdem dome, whats the problem, what was it renovated for?
i read somewhere that world cup wont be played here
www.sercan.de April 14th, 2009, 12:23 AM Jim, thats the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. :)
Sinan Erdem Dome has been never opened.
Construction started in 1993, but was stopped many times.
There had been some problems with the conctruction company and the city of Istanbul.
Its just a sports hall and the Turkish Basketball Federation do not like it. Therefore they wanted to built a new 18k Arena at Macka Park (North of Besiktas stadium).
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2418/unbenannt1si4sk7.jpg
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3294/unbenanntrj8kc4.jpg
But they do not get the permission. So they have to sue this one.
As far as i understand they do not destroy the current stands. Just some little works.
Jim856796 April 14th, 2009, 10:43 AM That person who took the photo I put in my post tricked me again!
And one more thing, Istanbul is building several new rectangular stadiums, and should this mean Istanbul should build several indoor arenas as well?
www.sercan.de April 14th, 2009, 12:00 PM Istanbul will have 2-3 football stadiums
-Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadi (53,586) (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=220424) (built, rumours: will be expanded)
-Türk Telekom Arena (52,647) (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=528206) (u/c, opening 2010)
-Inönü Stadi (42,000) (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=654661) (pro)
Arenas
-Fenerbahçe Arena (15,000) (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=655766) (u/c)
-Olympic Dome (22,500) (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=128808)
-Abdi Ipekci Arena (10,550) (built)
-New Galatasaray Arena (12,000-15,000) (pro)
Rest is under 10k
Genç April 17th, 2009, 03:59 PM He just learned that they were demolishing the 2nd tier!!!!!
So it looks like they will demolish the stands and built new ones.
IMO the capacity will be 15,000. Stands will be rectangular and maybe some suites.
Whaaaat! Surely they won't want to drop the capacity to below 22k, where would we host the final then :D
I hope its at least around the 20k mark, but I'm not too hopeful...

As far as i understand they will install big temporary stands 8maybe above the current ones?
Capacity for the FIBA WC will be 15,000
Jim856796 April 23rd, 2009, 02:45 PM In the arena's interior, it looks like they haven't demolished anything. However, they still need to install the seating. And does that appear to be a luxury box on one of the stadium's sides?
www.sercan.de April 23rd, 2009, 02:51 PM Yes. This demolish info was wrong :)
Don't know if they are suites.
According to an article from yesterday, the temporary structure will be huge.
As far as i understand it will also have suites (the temporary structure).
So it will be a Arena (15,000) inside the Arena (22,500).
But they will destroy the temporary structure after 2010, because the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships will be held here.
But thats what i've understand :D

Jim856796 May 29th, 2009, 06:22 PM There will be temporary stands inside this arena? They're gonna have to construct these fast because there is only one year before the tournament. Having to build temporary stands inside an indoor arena (especially if it's an arena that looks like it could host an indoor track and field event) is very complicated and probably not a good idea. Also, will they ever install proper seating in the permanent bowl after the 2010 FIBA World Championship? It can't be left with boring concrete stands forever.

As far as i know they already started to built the 3 temporary stands.
IMO they won't use good seats, because it won't be the main arena in Istanbul.
2012 FINA World Swimming Championships will be here. I hope that it will stay as indoor pool / aquatic centre.
Istanbul does not need a new "arena" / sports hall.

The arena cannot remain as an aquatics centre after the 2012 FINA World Championships because the pool is to be temporary. But it does look like it is long enough to get a 50m pool. It was originally designed as a multipurpose arena.
www.sercan.de June 1st, 2009, 08:38 PM Yes. It will be 25m for 2012, but maybe they will turn it into a permanant aquatic centre with a 50m pool and a diving pool.

Janderclamder September 30th, 2009, 09:19 AM Hello everyone
I am planning on going to the Semifinals and Finals of the World Championship. I have been looking for hotels and my question is:
Are there any within walking distance of the Sinan Erdem arena so I can go straight after the games? Otherwise there will be 15,000 people trying to get to the city centre after each day and could be a bit crazy.
If not, is it well connected to the centre of Istanbul?
Thanks. Looking forward to visiting your city next year.
Marin Mostar September 30th, 2009, 03:27 PM I ma wondering, what is the porpous of this arena? I mean without thees temporary stands.

Yes, the venue is very close to airport and near metro station (line 1) of Atakoy-Sirinevler. Keeping M1 you can go to Aksaray, where you can get tramwayds to city centrum or getting of in Zeytinburnu, where you get the tramways to downtown (Bazar, Cemberlitas, Sultanhamet, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and hotel distict,...).
I advice you to bok an hotel near Sultanhamet then you go to Olympic dome, keeping tramways until to Aksaray and then M1 getting off in Atakoy.
No book an otel in that zone, it is very ugly.
www.sercan.de October 26th, 2009, 11:47 AM Yes, its one of the few sports venues in Turkey, where you have a metro line before the building is opnened.
But this time the building is too late :D
BTW everbody asks why they will destroy the "basketball stands".
Istanbul has got 5 men basket teams and 5 woman basketbol teams.
But GS's man and woman and FB's man are playing at Abdi Ipekcsi Arena.
Even the biggest turkish Basketball club moved to a smaller one.
FB's new arena will be opnened in 2-3 years.
So just GS will play at Abdi Ipekci. So actually no club needs this arena.

Hello and thanks a lot for your reply.
I have been checking the transport map for Istanbul and it seems the M1 line goes up and down the map a lot from Aksaray to Atakoy. Wouldn't it take less time if I get a hotel in Sultanhamet to use the T1 from Aksaray to Zeytin and then M1 from there? Is the T1 a bus, tram...?
Thanks

hknsngr January 6th, 2010, 06:10 PM LIVE World Championship on Philips LED Displays!
The international Basketball Federation selected Turkey as a host country for the FIBA World Championship 2010. This tournament is a world basketball tournament for men's national teams held quadrennial by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Next to the host country Turkey, Olympic winner USA, European champion Spain other main countries from different continents will complete the twenty-four team field.
One of the venues that will host the championship is Sinan Erdem Dome, in Istanbul.
The Sinan Erdem Dome, formerly known as the Ataköy Dome is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in the European side of Istanbul, Turkey. It has a seating capacity of 22,500 people, making it Turkey's largest indoor venue and Europe's third largest arena after the Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex (25,000) and Belgrade Arena (23,000). The site is named after Sinan Erdem (1927–2003), who was the President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey from 1989 until his death in 2003.
In line with the FIBA requirements for host venues, Sinan Erdem Dome will install four Philips LED Displays in its brand new arena. Spectators and sponsors will be able to follow the championship matches live and see replays. The displays will consist of LED modules of the high-end Philips Vidiwall™ Delta 20-5000 R product range. This product provides the ultimate in screen processing, accepting all professional inputs and offering features including picture in picture, dual channel operation, remote control and Alpha blending. Furthermore each SmoothPix LED module of Philips equipment is fully calibrated and completely removes the sparkling and color. This will create an unforgettable atmosphere in a full Dome.
The Sinan Erdem Dome is expected to be opened in the beginning of 2010.

www.sercan.de April 15th, 2010, 11:20 AM Yes. IMO Abdi ipekci will be demolished. Its next to the historical wall, so maybe a museum (Turkish basketball Museum?) can be built there

built more than 10 years ago as part of Istanbul's olympic bid for 2000. it was planned as a 20k capacity oval indoor athletics track or something. obviously Istanbul didn't get the olympics and they never finished the interior. after Turkey was awarded the FIBA 2010 they changed the interior design completely and turned it into, in my opinion the best possible, 16k basketball arena. well done to everyone involved, great job.
g$X.n1 April 15th, 2010, 12:09 PM it's a beauty.... VERY GOOD JOB!
FredPerry April 15th, 2010, 10:19 PM I like it. Very nice and unique arena.
www.sercan.de April 16th, 2010, 12:34 AM thats true
unique bowl. Not a broing bowl like at many new arenas
Kuvvaci April 16th, 2010, 10:30 AM nice to hear that from you sercan!
BTW, Istanbul is getting rich in "sporting complexes"...
TTArena, Olympic Dome, Olympic Stadium
Saraçoğlu Stadium, New Arena for Fenerbahçe Ülker, new voleyball hall of Selim Sırrı Tarcan, also old Abdi İpekçi and Istanbul park. what else?
www.sercan.de April 16th, 2010, 10:50 AM Selim Sırrı Tarcan is in Ankara?!?1

Ataturk is one of the best stadiums worldwide, and now you have impressive indoor arena too. With those very decent stadiums and indoor arenas like Turk Telekom, Abdi Ipekci etc.., Instanbul has really impressive sport infrastructure. :applause:
Kuvvaci April 19th, 2010, 05:24 PM sercan I cant consider Inönü as a good stadium wich can be a part of this list. Yes, I confused Burhan felek. It will be an important volleyball used sport hall. And new sport hall for athletics will be wonderful.
www.sercan.de April 19th, 2010, 06:57 PM I just listed the 30k+ stadiums and 7,500+ arenas
Kuvvaci April 19th, 2010, 07:16 PM do you have any news aboout "New Indoor Athletics Arena "?
www.sercan.de April 19th, 2010, 08:56 PM nope.
There were news about a new 7,000 arena near Olimpiyat Stadi, but last week major said it will be 16,000
Kuvvaci April 20th, 2010, 07:17 PM I don't trust what authorities say most of the time.
Genç April 21st, 2010, 04:22 AM I don't trust what authorities say most of the time.
So you still trust them some of the time?!
Janderclamder April 21st, 2010, 11:59 AM It has been announced that the Euroleague Final Four for 2013 will be hosted by Istanbul (London for 2012). Not sure if they will use this arena for it.
BJK67 April 21st, 2010, 12:34 PM I think they will use the new Ulker arena
www.sercan.de April 21st, 2010, 02:10 PM Yes, as far as i remember new Ülker Arena bided for the EL final
Genç April 21st, 2010, 05:20 PM Super news. That adds another thing to Turkey's CV of hosting events :D
omercank April 22nd, 2010, 12:08 PM With the addition of Selcuk Erdem and Ülker Arenas, Istanbul will have an amazing infrastructure in basketball arenas. I do not even know what the authorities plan to do with Abdi Ipekci Arena upon the completion of these two...
Kuvvaci April 22nd, 2010, 07:41 PM two big international basketball arena. One voleyball arena... and also abdi ipekçi...
sali_haci May 9th, 2010, 11:24 PM The Moderator could move this thread to "Completed" section :)
Jim856796 May 10th, 2010, 01:17 AM The Ulker Arena is almost certain to compete with the Sinan Erdem Dome for premier indoor events held in Istanbul.

www.sercan.de May 16th, 2010, 07:03 PM Maybe the clubs will sue thise one instead of Abdi Ipekci

Jim856796 June 19th, 2010, 10:44 PM Yes. It will be 25m for 2012, but maybe they will turn it into a permanant aquatic centre with a 50m pool and a diving pool.
Just next to the dome you can find the open aquatic centre
Well fine, if you want this arena to end up like Tokyo's Aquatic Centre...
If Istanbul hosts the Summer olympics, this should host gymnastics events and the other biggest sports in the multipurpose event. If you say no, where will Gymnastics be held?
www.sercan.de June 20th, 2010, 12:38 PM Sorry Jim, forget to post the newes informations :)
So the new stands will stay. Which means indoor athletics won't be here in 2012 (They will built a new 10,000 next to this one)
Honestly i do not think that Gymnastics can b held here. At least Olympic Gymnastics, because capacity for Basketball is 15,500.
As far as i know you need more space at Gymnastics, so they have to remove the portable first tier. So cap would sink to ~10,000 which is pretty low for Olympic Gymnastics.
So for Istanbul Olympics 20xx they have to built a new bigger arena
Jim856796 June 20th, 2010, 10:58 PM The new stands CANNOT stay in this arena, they HAVE to be dismantled after the world basketball championship is over. The new stand are meant top be a temporary fixture and not a permanent one. If they do stay, this arena WILL be rendered a white elephant. You're trying to make this arena look stupid. The Indoor athletics will STILL be in this national indoor arena. It took us 17 years to build this. We're not building any more new arenas for Istanbul until Istanbul wins an Olympic bid.
www.sercan.de June 21st, 2010, 12:09 PM Jim its not my opionon.
Major and Sports minister said it. They new stands will stay and they will built a new 10,000 sports hall next to this one. The new sports hall will be able to host indoor athletics
Jim856796 June 21st, 2010, 11:25 PM I don't want to see that happening. They don't know that temporary is. The stupid sports minister has officially ruined this hall, it can't remain as a basketball-specific arena forever. It has to be multipurpose. How stupid can the Sports Minister get? I don't want those stands to remain after the basketball championships. istanbul will never host a Summer olympics if they are going to intentionally mess up this hall, that's sloppiness. Why are the stands remaining after the championships anyway?
And please do not construct that sports hall, it (and the surrounding sports complex) WILL be a white elephant.
www.sercan.de June 22nd, 2010, 02:25 PM Jim welcome to Turkey :)
Actually this one is still multipurpose. The first tier is moveable. So Basketball, Voleyball, Handball, Tennis, swimmung etc shouldn't be a problem.
Just indoor athletics is not possible.
I think the canceled Istanbul Super Arena (16,000) was the kind of arena you and we wanted
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2936/unbenanntal.jpg
likasz June 22nd, 2010, 09:46 PM Any sport event before FIBA WCH2010?
Jim856796 June 23rd, 2010, 01:35 AM To Sercan: Well, you should have left the dome at its natural bowl and not have constructed those "temporary" stands. If you can't dismantle the stands, then, the Indoor Athletics Championships will be relocated to an exhibition centre in Istanbul. It should be possible if the stands were to be removed.
www.sercan.de June 23rd, 2010, 11:12 AM 2nd league play-off matches were here and some other non sports meetings.
@Jim, that wa the way everbody thought. They will built temporary stands and will remove them.
Now they say "those stands were too expensive. destruction would cost 4 mil. euro" etc
Jim856796 June 23rd, 2010, 01:43 PM I don't care how expensive the job is. The stands WILL be taken down whether they like it or not.
www.sercan.de June 23rd, 2010, 02:32 PM But they won't do it :
Jim856796 June 24th, 2010, 01:51 AM ^^I hope they change their minds and do it anyway. The sports minister should be impeached for this. The stands cannot be kept as permanent and that's final.
www.sercan.de June 24th, 2010, 11:21 AM But its too late.
TBF, city of Istanbul, Sports minister do not wantto destroy the stands.
City of Istanbul is the owner so it won't happend
Jim856796 June 24th, 2010, 11:40 AM ^^Sercan, no matter what messages you post, I am still opposed to this. They ought to be complete jerks to keep those stands. Any hopes of this dome being multipurpose are now lost. If you are going to build a primary indoor events venue for the city and you have stands which are intended to be temporary that the venue's owner or the city cannot remove at all, then don't bother hosting Olympic Gymnastics. Istanbul shouldn't even bother hosting a Summer Olympics. 2020 is going to Africa and not Istanbul.
BTW what are those stands made of, anyway?
www.sercan.de June 24th, 2010, 11:57 AM Jim welcome to our situation. The guys don't know what they do.
As far as i know mainly steel and concrete and it surprised us when we saw the construction.
Even at the construction phase you could easly see that they do not built temporary stands.
But they said "its temporary"
Jim856796 June 24th, 2010, 01:07 PM THe natural bowl is concrete. The temporary stands are steel.
www.sercan.de June 25th, 2010, 04:11 PM Jim fresh news
http://www.sabah.com.tr/Spor/2010/06/05/sinan_erdeme_kardes_salon_geliyor
Deconstruction of the 2 new stands would cost 20-25 mil. USD.
So instead of they want to built for that money a 10,000 indoor athletic sports hall next to Sinan Erdem Dome.
It will be finished in November 2011 and IAAF said "ok, no problem"
Jim856796 June 25th, 2010, 08:36 PM ^^Yes, problem. I hope that sports hall is temporary and that it skeleton is steel.
