Biggest Middle East sports city to be constructed in Erbil

ERBIL, June 21 (AKnews)- A sports city in Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region, will be constructed soon. It will be the largest city across the Middle East in terms of its facilities, according to the Stadium website.

The website citing some informed sources said that the city will comprise four stadiums; only one has the capacity of seating 100,000 spectators and the others only 50,000.

The city will also include exercise stadiums, sports centers, hotels and pools.

The project will be put to tender in the coming few months and should be completed within two years.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has sanctioned the project submitted by Kurdistan Olympics Committee, according to the source.

The capacity of the stadiums won't be so high. It will be a big waste of money if so! I mean the current stadium is not full all the time and it doesn't even have a capacity of 30.000.
As you said Haider it's better if they disturbed the four stadiums between the big cities instead of just making them all in Hawler.

I really hope the info is not true and that they use money on more useful and needed projects. Hawler will be better of with a 40.000 all-seater stadium.

Lol at the Shakira joke. She will sing kaka kaka instead waka waka. :D

Hi Sanchez

For Baghdad's 60.000 stadium I think it's still unknown.

There are these plans for Erbil (LINK (http://aknews.com/en/aknews/5/313397/)) but it will probably and realistically be smaller than claimed in the article.

with so much focus on football stadiums, other sports are being left behind with little to no funding. this is step in the right direction at long last.

which country today has more stadiums under construction than iraq?

The majority of stadium projects we've seen so far are either proposals or have been approved but are awaiting the standard 'couple of years' interval between the approval and start of construction.

The only stadiums in construction at the moment are the BSC stadium, Mina2 and Najaf stadiums AFAIK?

But yeah in terms of projects or plans we probably have more plans for new stadiums than any country that I can think of....

Which 20,000 stadium is under construction?

Google Image stadiums and that would be what stadiums look like.

And yeah anything under 10,000 I consider to be a training field with a few seats for a few fans.

Which "stadium" in Europe, the Americas or even Asia is 5,000? You won't find any lol that's why I don't classify them as stadiums..

A meeting with the minister of Youth and Sport, no date.
""

The Iraqi Ministry of Youth and Sports recently inaugurated nine new sports facilities in Anbar province in an effort to boost the region's sports programmes.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Jassem Mohammad Jaafar, told Mawtani that the new projects are part of a national plan to build and revitalise athletic centres across Iraq, many of which had been damaged or fallen into disrepair in recent years.

The new projects include the Fallujah Sports Forum, the closed sports auditorium, the new Fallujah stadium, and other sports fields and halls in Ramadi, all of which were built according to the latest modern designs and specifications.

Other projects are still undergoing work by the government and local private companies specialised in the construction of sports facilities, he added.

"All the completed facilities and others still under construction are modern, serve the sports and youth segments, and their construction is supervised by specialised engineering and technical committees," Jaafar said.

"All the finished facilities were supplied with the necessary sports equipment, while training and administrative staff were assigned to provide the services needed and to act as links between the sports teams and the government entities," he added.

Dr. Saleh al-Mutlaq, deputy prime minister for services affairs, told Mawtani, "There are other sports projects, distributed throughout the districts and sub-districts of Anbar, on which work is set to start at the beginning of next year."

"Anbar represents one third of Iraq," al-Mutlaq said. "It has sports talent and promising capacities in various sports games, which require the presence of playing fields, training halls and coaches to groom young talent and supervise the various championships."

"The central government in Baghdad and the local Anbar administration have allocated huge funds within this year's and next year's budgets to build sports projects that will boost the Ministry of Youth and Sports' plans and meet Anbar's need for sports facilities," he added.

AN ESSENTIAL PART OF LIFE
Al-Mutlaq told Mawtani that "sports have become an essential part of life" in Iraq, adding that there is a nationwide "trend to build major sports facilities in Iraq to achieve a qualitative leap in the various sports with support and backing by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and other government agencies".

Meanwhile, Anbar governor Qassim al-Fahdawi said, "We hope the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and all the government entities in Baghdad, will support the sports movement even further, because Anbar is in need of many more projects [considering] its vast area and steadily increasing population, which require launching additional projects".

"The projects currently undertaken are sophisticated ones, cover huge areas and include good specifications, which provide athletic teams a new horizon in sports, such as local playing fields, swimming pools, and training halls for martial arts, basketball, volleyball and tennis," he added.

Projects will not be restricted to just supporting local sports clubs, but will also provide care for Iraqi athletes who will be representing Anbar at local, regional and international sporting events, al-Fahdawi added.

LOLLLLL.

 Ridiculous indeed. If they were as good at building stadiums (wait only one quality project is underway and near its finish - so not even that) as securing basic accommodates to the majority of Iraqis in the year 2012 (soon to be 2013) then I am sure they would have something to "brag" about. But even that seems mission impossible. For now at least.

I know the (former) site engineer for that stadium. basically the contractor who took that project bid so low on the project that there was not enough money to build the roofing... the company owner asked this reputable engineer to do a "cheap job" and he refused and quit... since then the ministry hasn't paid them any more money and the project is in limbo.

the whole idea of giving out contracts without looking through and verifying the "costing" and timeline feasibility is mind boggling.

Anyway both designs look great

They have a different meaning for casino in Iraq. I think it means just a place to sit and chill. No gambling though.

Are they going to build a 100,000 capacity stadium?

They are planning to build one large stadium in Baghdad in addition to the 5+ smaller (20-30k capacity)

They have not chosen the design yet but it will be anywhere from 60- 100k capacity.

First plan was to build a stadium with capacity of 100k. That plan has changed into a plan to build two 30k stadiums(Russafa and Sadr) and one 60k(Tajeeat).

well the youth and sport once again got over $2Bn to spunk this year on "stuff" and since they're already building a mega stadium in every village and hamlet across Iraq using their past budgets, I wonder what they can spend the money they're getting this year on? villas for registered sports people? shopping malls within "sports cities" ? more hotels in sports cities? I mean they have, once again, DOUBLE the money that the ministry of construction and housing received to build houses for millions of homeless people across Iraq...

Doc_I.R.Q

It would even be worth it to waste 100 million on a world class coach than for these corrupt cunts to spend on them selves.
