^^ Cameroun's got some work to do, eh? :ohno:

Not that bad. It would look better if streets were not treated as garbadge cans, roads paved, and those slum houses' roofs not built with tin (or whatever it is they use) cause it rusts and looks bad.

I really don't know if this poster is being serious. The pictures appears to me to be negatively skewed but I don't want to accuse someone of something they might have not intended. I just do not believe this is the best of Cameroun.

hello, sorry for my english...

I was 1 month in Cameroon by family of friend from swytzerland in summer 2010. That pictures are what i see in the country. I don't try to published only the "best picture", but only the picture, because i don't think this forum is a "promotional touristic tour" but more exactly a photography forum with a honest (i hope) vision of the country.

Slum appear in the country 10 years ago, with the economical crisis, and the massiv migration to the big cities of the country.

When i post this picture, i dont'have thinking that a problem to published them. Sorry.

I dont't hav more time now for more answers....

Its ok mr General. Its just that we already know that all african countries have terrible slums.

We don't want to see what kind of slums they are. Just the best of what a country can offer . and yes, its good for Tourism to show what good things a country can offer.

Tu peu parler uassi Francais . But you write good English.

Mr General Electric,

Thanks you for posting those pictures. My wife is a Cameroonian and we are planning to visit in November. I just like what you are doing. People don't only need to see the nice places of a country but also the not so nice places. I've been in Africa several times and I'v' seen more places like the once in your pictures than nice buildings. When people who have never been in Africa come to this forum they only see nice buildings, when they visit those countries they see the reality. Thats just why your pictures are much more interesting than the mayority of pictures we see on this forum. And to be honnest, when I visit Africa I prefer to see villages and slums than the rich people places.

There seems to be a big confusion here: « SkyscraperCity » is not a website that specializes in urban geography per se; its purpose is basically described by its denomination, namely to showcase the infrastructure (buildings, roads, bridges, etc.) of different cities in the world. Nobody is denying or downplaying the existence of slums in African cities, or in any other cities of the world for that matter, but that is not the subject around which the SkyscraperCity community is gathered. You may not agree with this approach and that is your God-given right to do so, in which case I would advise you to consult other websites that deal with the “real African cities” as you know them. These websites abound the Internet.

Yes sure Hadrami, but i think i understand what want to say fortportal: Visit, discover, live slum are most rewarding for a part of "occident people" than to see bigs news houses. Personally, during the trip, i was more comfortable with the people from slum than those rich block (even if it was very complex relation due the cultural and financial difference, inevitably). Maybe cause in Europe i live in the poor block, even if in Africa "i was rich".

In any case, poor around the world shouldn't exist, even everybody couldn't be rich. Each person has the right to have a decent life, that goes without saying...

It is not about African people wanting the best pictures of their continent posted; this is the general idea behind the whole concept. A quick visit to other continental fora will back up this assertion. African forumers know and assume the reality of underdevelopment on the continent: they are the harshest critics of the dysfunctional systems that generate poverty there. But they also know that Africa is not only about misery and slums: things are improving there too, albeit slowly. This is why, in keeping with the spirit of SkyscraperCity, they want to see this improvement showcased. If your having scruples not to show the seamy side of Cameroonian cities is understandable, so is the uneasiness of those who were expecting a showcase of those cities, in keeping with the spirit of SkyscarperCity.

True, its the reality on the ground but let us also be even handed here. Before i ever had a chance to tour western countries all i saw was glossy mags of nice places and majestic backgrounds of western cities on tv like cnn.Never once did i see old trailer parks, crime ridden housing projects and abandoned tenements and homeless people highlighted.Never imagined once that our house in africa was actually better than some in the west.Even the economist mag once had a cover of glimming western cities and a poor african child on the side with a heading "the hopeless continent"

I just don't get it why some people are okay with this double standard. If westeners don't give you a full picture of their cities why is it expected of africans?

Totaly agree with you! Rich Africans are big assholes who don't care about their poor neighbour.
Anyway, rich people all over the world are always assholes.
And why some people need to be stinking rich why other people even don't have a nail to scratch their ass?
I would not sleep good if I was rich while the children of my neighbour have no food.
