DID YOU KNOW:
Hyderabad was formerly known as (before the creation of Pakistan), the Paris of British India for its roads used to be washed with perfume everyday!
Hyderabad is a city in Sindh province, in southeast Pakistan, lying on the east bank of the Indus River, 150 km/95 mi northeast of Karachi. The population of Hyderabad stands at 1,151,300 (1998). Industries include textiles, cement, glass and soap, pottery, tanneries, and film; handicraft industries, including silver and gold work, lacquerware, ornamented silks, and embroidered leather saddles, are also well established. Hyderabad is a major commercial centre for the agricultural produce of the surrounding area, including millet, rice, wheat, cotton, and fruit. There is a thermal power station nearby which is a major station for the city as well as for the nation.
The site of Hyderabad was occupied before the 8th century, but the modern city was founded in 1768 by Ghulam Shah, with his fort and palace as important features. The city was the capital of Sind until the province was captured by the British in 1843.
Hyderabad is the home of the University of Sind (founded in Karachi in 1947). Other higher education establishments are the Liaqat Medical College and agricultural and commercial colleges.

cntower August 26th, 2004, 05:25 PM There we are...
Sultan August 26th, 2004, 08:07 PM Nice pictures.. the Govt needs to pay more attention to Hyderabad. better roads, export processing zones. special economic zones. or something needs to be set up in this city. to encourage more investment, and more uplift projects need to be initiated.
cntower August 26th, 2004, 10:25 PM For a city of 1 million it was very hard to find pictures; it seems to me this city is really neglected both by the provincial governments and federal governments. At one time this was the capital of Sindh; what has it become now? Faisalabad is in better shape and it has just around the same population.
Sultan August 26th, 2004, 10:28 PM Yup, the city has been neglected big time. Faisalabad is in pretty good shape. but i think the provincial govtz should start paying attention to this city!
where is Hyderabad located? i've never been to it ! :(
is it on the coast?
cntower August 26th, 2004, 10:39 PM  no it's in central Sindh!
http://www.sindhtoday.net/sindh_map_01.gif
You can see Hyderabad District; the city itself lies on the Indus River's East Bank.
Sultan August 26th, 2004, 10:48 PM dude, you know Thar parkar is full of resources, i think it has a lot of coal, correct me if i'm wrong.
the resources if used up properly can earn a lot of forex for the country.
cntower October 16th, 2004, 11:49 PM Sultan help me out...I'm having a hard time finding pictures for Hyderabad!
And this is a large city! People say Faisalabad is bigger, but I think Hyderabad is the fourth biggest city after Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi!
Its_Waqas October 17th, 2004, 03:51 PM Sultan help me out...I'm having a hard time finding pictures for Hyderabad!
And this is a large city! People say Faisalabad is bigger, but I think Hyderabad is the fourth biggest city after Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi!
Faisalabad is a city of 2mn population and its bigger than Hyderabad but Hyderabad looks much better than Faisalabad. Believe me if some city has been neglected its Faisalabad but its good to see that the damage control era for Faisalabad has started and things are getting better not worse.
Lahore is recovering pretty fast after being almost dead from the development point of view for almost 30 years (1965-1995) thanks to the SHARIFs lahore is a much cleaner place.
cntower October 17th, 2004, 04:46 PM Oh is it 2 million?
But Hyderabad is really being neglected badly; they should do something for this city quick!
Its_Waqas October 17th, 2004, 04:49 PM Yup its 2 million and it is in a badddd condition some ppl say its the Largest Village of Pakistan (dont say that to a faisalabadi, he'll kill u)
cntower October 17th, 2004, 04:50 PM Largest village?
Isn't that taking it a little too far or are you serious?
Its_Waqas October 17th, 2004, 05:27 PM believe me ive visited Faisalabad but i dont mean that all of faisalabd is dirty, D-Ground and peoples colony are awsome places and the rest of Faisalabad is improving alot.
zees October 18th, 2004, 08:30 AM I don't know why our govt. is neglecting Hyderabad , Sukkur , Thatta , MoenjoDaro.......coz no development projects for these cities.
pakboy October 18th, 2004, 03:35 PM the real estate boom has started in faislabad, and with kohinoor city it is gona become an excellent city.
cntower October 24th, 2004, 04:22 AM I think more than just that will be needed to make it a city at par with Lahore and Karachi. It's true if Fasi starts building at the rate of Lahore and Karachi, it sooner or later will!
Plus it's population is quite large and growing as well; the city has +3 million in the city and surroundings!
This is about Hyderabad though; I still believe this city is really badly ignored even by the federal government. Why?

swerveut February 19th, 2005, 10:00 AM but how do you justify calling it the Paris of South Asia?
cntower July 10th, 2005, 08:46 PM Read about why it's called that; actually it has nothing to do with architecture. They called it Paris of South Asia because they use to clean the roads with Perfume (that's right perfume) everyday.
Read about it...
Kashmiri84 July 24th, 2005, 04:51 AM Paris of South Asia, eh? hmmmm.....
pakboy July 24th, 2005, 04:21 PM well the paris of the east is usally said to lahore.

What authorities need to do is PLANNING, which is missing ATM, develop a proper 'city master plan' and then implement it <<< require some dedication and hard work..!!
Nice pics singaporean! :) Looking forward to some more..

PakFan May 15th, 2006, 11:56 PM Why do the authorities insist on putting replica planes in the middle of every city. Such things give the impression of our cities being places run by miltary set-ups rather than thriving, bustling modern cities. There is a place for such memorabilia, its called a military museum.
UnitedPakistan May 16th, 2006, 12:23 AM They are not replica's...These are real planes flown by the pilots that protected our nation. Do not remove them...They are a source of our pride.
PakFan May 16th, 2006, 12:30 AM They are not replica's...These are real planes flown by the pilots that protected our nation. Do not remove them...They are a source of our pride.
That why they should be a museum where they can be appreciated by historians, enthusiasts and civilians alike. The UK and many other cities survived two world wars...but you dont see military replicas in the middle of London or Luton.
UnitedPakistan May 16th, 2006, 12:49 AM We already have a museum in Karachi for them...Plus these planes are not 1 or 2...BUT 50-100...Why do you want to follow the models of western nations?!
Many people in Pakistan appreciate these planes..

FK May 20th, 2006, 12:20 AM I definately agree, Hyderabad has for long been neglected, but lets hope the current management restores Hyderabad back to its glory days !
cntower May 20th, 2006, 12:06 PM 2 million people...probably the most neglected city in Pakistan...that's what you get for being close to Karachi...
Faisalabad was going through a similar problem being close to Lahore...but it managed to attract industries...and now look...it too looks like an upcoming major city...

Pakia November 29th, 2007, 12:13 AM Hyderabad, Sindh was not only known for his perfume industry but also for some beautiful architecture that unfortunately is falling prey to criminal neglect & abuse, if still standing.
If such old buildings were in some other country, they'd have been renovated & turned into artsy touristy shopping places or other entertaining venues. But ofcourse in our country the business people are too stupid to realize the potential of these one-of-a-kind buildings instead they keep building shoddy eye-sores of new bldgs for shopping plazas. Lazy unimaginative rich bastards.
Good job again, JADI.

The newly placed Dolphin on the round about in Latiafabd, Hyderabad, Sindh in Pakistan shows the link between River Indus and dolphin. Blind dolphins are found in River Indus and are threatened by the construction of dams and lack of flow of water in the Arabian Sea. The city of Hyderabad is the largest city located on the banks of River Indus. Latifabad is the satellite town of Hyderabad.

The forts are still there, but in a mediocre condition. The old city is pretty congested with narrow streets, but there are some really decent areas such as Latifabad, Defence, Qasimabad, etc. The city has a lot of potential, and if money is spent on the right projects, it can look like Islamabad in no more than 5 years.

peeru February 10th, 2012, 06:22 PM Hyderabad is a city synonymous with fresh fish, creamy rabree (a saturated milk sweet) and mithais (desi sweets). It also has its own fashion triumphs: Hyderabadi thread- work bangles being home to some of the biggest bangle industries.
The entertainment-starved locals of Hyderabad welcomed the city’s first fashion show in 10 years with top models, topped with a concert featuring Princess Annie, Falak, Amanat Ali and Ali Khan.
The show, held at the 144-year-old Hyderabad Gymkhana, was titled Vibration Funk Walk 2012 and showcased collections from a mix palette of designers comprising Element Jeans, Lahore based Arif Ashraf, Hasina Khanani, Ralli, Fateh Exclusive and Spring Chain. – Photos by Raza Jaffri, text by Moiz Kazmi/Dawn.com

About that picture of the flyover, it took them more than a year to build that flyover of extremely mediocre standards, just like most of the roads in Hyderabad that probably haven't been repaired in more than a decade. I hope they demolish and reconstruct it. Too bad I had to drive on it everyday to get to school.
