Canada was settled as independent colonies at the same time as the US. It wasn't a case of people moving to land outside but close to the US to be near it. This is something that generally happens with cities rather than countries.

Well, Windsor is kinda suburb of Detroit....isnt it? Same goes for Niagra Fall and Buffalo.

But yea Canada is its own proud country. Just happens to share much more similarities than any other border countries. Except Quebec.
