Planet Café owner to invest in Disneyland for Pakistan

The Chief Executive of A S Empire, Muhammad Aslam Karim, told Daily Times on Saturday that the company plans to bring Disneyland to Pakistan as well as set up a museum called ‘Planet Museum of Celebrities’ for the statues of famous media artists.

Mr Karim said he had already discussed his plan with the federal government and would present a written proposal within two months. He said the government had already given him a verbal confirmation. Federal Minister Shaukat Aziz had earlier urged overseas Pakistanis to invest in the country. Mr Karim is one of these overseas Pakistanis who have decided to make such an investments.

The CE said Islamabad and Karachi had been finalised as sites for the Disneyland and Lahore was also being considered. Mr Karim said the reason for the delay in deciding about Lahore was that he had already made a significant investment in the city by introducing The Planet Café. Mr Karim said land for Disneyland would be acquired in the outskirts of the cities of Karachi and Islamabad for the construction of the project.

Mr Karim said the Disneyland project would start in December . An original Disneyland character would be brought to Pakistan in a special Disneyland exhibition every year. The first character to be introduced would be Mickey Mouse. The project would also include resorts, motels and other similar facilities. The company would initiate special colourful buses for children that would take them to Disneyland.

The “Planet Museum of Celebrities’ was announced as another feature of the project. The museum is to be established in Lahore where statues of celebrated people from all walks of life especially from the world of glitz and glam will be displayed. Mr Karim said the museum project would start at the end of 2004 or early 2005 and that the government had been informed about this project as well.

if they wanna build it, i suggest to build in gwadar to top the cake.

exactly ! i think Gwadar would be an ideal site for this sort of an investment.

but Gwadar port is almost done, and then the road network has to be laid down, housing schemes are under construction, so it'll be a while before we see a major theme park project for Gwadar.

i've heard the person investing in this project has gotten licence from Disneyland like a franchise. this would be a mini disneyland :) hehe

Yes, the plans are two twin towers, 50 - 55 storey's, and a office tower, along with an amusement park and other facilities.

lets see what the plans turn out to be :)

Sultan
August 27th, 2004, 07:42 PM
Plans havent been released for the twin towers yet, i need to see some renderings, i heard the person investing in the towers, travelled to UK and Dubai for the designs, but lets see what happens, he will release them...

a culture needs to be created in Pakistan, that builders and contractors should release designs, renderings, and a website with information on a certain project!

I have no problem with a theme park...but disneyland is not the answer for Pakistan. I think it should have the country's flavor. Although Europe has a disneyland, it is not very profitable.

I'm still having my doubts on this Disneyland thing; I think someone has really mixed it up with the real Disneyland. Anyone could slap on the name Disneyland and open a theme park; I don't know other than Pakistani newspapers I haven't seen anything on the Walt Disney website or anywhere else for that matter.

I would love to see a themepark like that in Pakistan but right now I think it's not the real one unless someone could prove me wrong; please prove me wrong!

but in the news it said that the guy is a Pakistani-American, who got the rights from the original Disneyland in the U.S, franchise kind of thing, and every year, an original disney character from the U.S would visit Pakistan. So i doubt it's just a park with Disneyland written on it.....

Correct! The news about the Disneyland for Karachi was on the press in July 04 as well, its confirmed that its not Disneyland, its Karachi Beach Theme Park, its a water park :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

First theme park for Pakistan

UK-based company, Deighton International has been awarded the contract to develop and operate Pakistan’s first theme park.

The City District Government of Karachi chose the leisure and tourism planning, development and operation specialist over other shortlisted tenders from the US and the Middle East.

Costing more than US$200m (£108m), the Karachi Beach theme park will be situated on a 100-acre beachfront site in the city’s Clifton area and target its 10 million residents as well as the large numbers of domestic tourists who head to the Arabian Sea coast at weekends and holidays.

The park will be split into seven zones all based on national and oceanic themes including a replica of Pakistan’s K2 mountain, a giant oyster shell whose pearl houses an attraction based on the country’s history, and a water ride called Monsoon.

It will also feature two hotels.

Guests will enter the park through the national flag – with the admissions building in the shape of a crescent and an illuminated fountain in the shape of a five-pointed star.

Deighton CEO, Philip D. Deighton, said: “Karachi Beach is a world-class site and we intend to deliver and world-class attraction.”

The City District of Karachi is contributing the land and services and Deighton is currently courcing investment for the $200m development costs.

Work is due to begin on site early in 2005. Details: www.deighton-international.com

Theres a plae in dubai called knowledge village which along the lines that you proposed. I mean its good .. but it hasnt got the best of reputations cos its not really like a real university. Its not comparable to a UK university for example. I think London Metropolitan University opening a campus in Lahore is a good start for Pakistan if they can attract actual universities to open campuses ... then its good.

BENEFITS FOR INVESTING IN PAK
1) Disney will invest in Pak first coz to attract tourists especially from Gulf countries
2) Most indian tourists visit Pakistan because of the religous palces in Punjab
3) India is also not safe coz of problems in Jarkhand and Bihar (Indian states) and Modi (4 not getting USA Visa)

I think we are better off not discussing something that is so highly unlikely. This is basically dreamworld for us keeping in mind the present state we are in.
Realistically speaking, Disney would be MUCH MUCH better off investing in Dubai than in Pakistan to attract Gulf and Indian/Pakistani/Middle Eastern tourists. And big companies wouldnt invest in such a high risk place such as Pakistan with our hordes of hardliners, poor people, uneducated people, sectarianists, and etc.
As for Zees resons,
1) I think you got it the opposite way.
2) I think you got this the opposite way as well. Pakistanis just visit India for tourist reasons and probably, still, more go there than come here across the border.
3) well, lets look at ourselves. I think India's image abroad is a THOUSAND times better than ours is... what with our extremist mullahs and rape stories and bomb blasts and sectarian mosque killings coming into the picture every few weeks.
4) Tax situation... well, it is a known fact that in Pakistan, only Karachi pays 90% of the tax...wouldnt say anymore.
In short, this is such a useless topic it should be locked.

I am an Indian forumer:

4) Half of the population may live below the poverty line but it has one of the highest growth rate of people coming out of poverty in the world.

5) You cannot judge a country by what is being reported in the news: news will always carry incidents or sensational good news is rarely reported (not enough to get advt money) I also see a lot on Pak in the news and you can bet nothing about the country's progress. Someonw going on strike is usually limited to one city/town it does not affect the rest of the country else there would be a lot of hue and cry and court cases.

You can differentiate India into two ... the southern states are almost reaching developed stage while the northern states have 2-3 states which are under developed so things get averaged out. Bihar is not the whole of India as is the frontier provinces of your country. Want to know whats happening in Indian business watch "NTDV Profit" or CNBC if you get these.

You cannot judge a country sitting thousands of kms away, I dont judge Pak sitting here. You need to stay at that place and then can understand what is the actual state.

5) I agree image of India abroad is better than ours, most people thinks Pakistan is worst than India or just like Afghanistan which is False, again i will prefer u to go to India and see rape, honour killings, bomb blasts are so common there yesterday i was watching Indian show 'Watch Dog' in that show indian media is taking interview from most wanted terrorist of India not only that in an indian village if ur wife or husband dies other villagers will kill u.......etc
Now, BJP and Muslims of India are fighting coz BJP wants to build temple at Taj Mahal (Muslims graveyard) , there are problems in indian states of Jarkhand and Bilhar, Strikes are so common there sometimes doctors somes times bankers are on Strike..........etc etc In reality I will say we r 1000 times better than India. (Sorry to Indian forumers but this is reality and i think u all agree with this)

Wow! Judging by your post count it doesnt seem your here for any good reason aswell, as your quoting someone who made a post way back in March 30th, 2005, 03:04 AM .
