View Full Version : What Professions?
New Jack City August 28th, 2004, 09:56 PM To get things started in here, let's check out who's doing what. What profession do some of you students plan to go into or major in? On the other hand, do we have any professionals here working in any of these fields of interest?
Personally, I just started college and am going to major in "Real Estate and Metropolitan Development."
How about you?
Any future or do we have any architects, engineers, developers, property managers, construction managers, consultants, etc.?

entropy August 28th, 2004, 11:19 PM That's it! I'm going to change my major into something urban-related (since there's still like 2 weeks before university starts) just so that I can post in here.
Vertigo August 29th, 2004, 12:12 AM Not really skyscraper-related, though it certainly is an "urban" profession: I just finished my study in traffic & transport management. I hope to get a job in the public transport business or in a government, working on mobility policies.

Baruch has a good business school. The Real Estate program is pretty well-rounded. It's flexible, you can go into Planning, Public Policy, Real Estate and even Finance w/ that degree. Good for Pre-Law study, too. Good choice.

In the last semester of my senior year, I changed my mind that, instead, my undergraduate study was pre-Law. What a great time to decide you want to go to law school. Now, I have to make up for my mediocre GPA!

huaiwei September 10th, 2004, 10:39 AM I am into my honours year in Geography at the University of Singapore. Took up geography because I wanted to be an urban planner. But I think over time, I am beginning to change my mind. I might end up either being a full-time cop (already half-way in there), a teacher, or some other form of a civil servant! :D

TRZ September 20th, 2004, 07:35 AM Architectural Technologist (not a Uni course, College Diploma, only 3 years).
Kinda feel like I need more schooling, but hoping to get experience first and foremost. Living in Japan at the moment, seriously considering the prospect of studying here. Just gotta get on my feet first (which I'm not at the moment). If I do study, it would be something along the lines of civil eng, or property development type of stuff, which I hope to apply to rail or other mass transit in future.

Trevelyan October 3rd, 2004, 06:46 PM This Spring 2005 is when I finally start college.
I'll be studying for major in Computer Network Administration at Rogers State University in Claremore, OK., and I've already studied and achieved a minor degree in Graphics Design.
I would also really like to go into architecture, but from what I've read and heard, they don't get payed much. Most people will probably shun me for my aspiration of money though.

7 years?!?!
I have had a hand tinkling with Arcsoft for a year, and I admit I had some fun, albeit I dont really like to get too involved in the technical side of things. Rather, we tend to utilise the tool to access geographic issues...
I might go back to touching the thing again next year for my 3rd course on it before I graduate, so maybe I can seek advice from you if you are willing! :D

architecture course in limkokwing university is not bad(reputation wise).. i mean if u wanna look for uni locally. limkokwing offers twinning with universities in australia (not sure which one).. my sister is taking this course. hope i can help as much.
limkokwing is an art college/university but its architecture course has its own department.. doesn't go under the faculty of art or design.. hmm may be someone else could help u answer this? cos i have no idea..
huaiwei October 22nd, 2004, 10:34 PM Hmmm.....its the "Bachelor of Arts in Architecture" in the National University of Singapore, despite being in its own department in a faculty shared with the Real Estate department?
And this classification seems to be in line with some of the academic schools around the world (especially the British-influenced), irrespective of whether architecture in itself is in a seperate department and/or faculty or not?

Proposal writer for design/build projects? We are just getting into design/build in our area (submitted our first proposal today), but that seems to be the way industry is heading. Usually it's just lowest price gets the job.
mhays October 29th, 2004, 07:29 AM I'm curious what you mean by design-build, because it means different things to different people. Maybe 10% of our work is design-build as we use the term, with us as contractor hiring the designers, and the owner getting everything single-source. It's not the most common method in Washington state due in part to our tax laws. Though we compete well with this method.
75% of our company's work is negotiated, where we work alongside the architect as an equal, and are hired early so we can collaborate on design. For these projects, qualifications, reputation, relationships, and personality typically matter as much as anything. If we submit a price it's often just for fee -- though fee is often a deciding factor.
Personally I like the low-bid stuff, because I typically don't have to do anything! And sometimes we need a quick-start project or two to keep the workload even.
HCT October 29th, 2004, 04:59 PM Are there any curtain wall / facade designers on here - I need to recruit some!
Ideally in UK or Dubai - but may consider overseas if willing to relocate.

It depends on the university and it's course syllabus. Most univerisites in the US and UK tend to be leaning towards the engineering side, while Australia, Canada, NZ etc are more on the Arts side. and this is for most case not all.
My friend read IM Pei's birography and he told me that IM Pei studied at MIT and his architectural degree made him felt like civil engineering coz he did so much math.

Arcitecture is much more related to art then to engineering. In most countries the work is saperated. The arcitect has to invent and the building-engineer has to do it.
I will start to study art and ercitecture in 2005. In Stuttgart.

the vast majority of architects dont build skyscrapers, and the chance of a project having unlimited funds (to alow unlimited aesthetic pleasure) are very few and far between.
BUDGETS hold it back, the client will consider Value for Money, size, even construction time.
Thats why if you ever see a 'odd' building its usually govt funded because only govts can aford to waste money. cos its not theirs.
I think that alot of you students will get a big shock when (if) you ever qualify and then 'if' you ever find employment.
Because it will be 'welcome to the real world'

Xusein August 22nd, 2007, 11:25 AM Starting my second year of University majoring in Industrial Engineering...
I have a passion for urban planning (or else I wouldn't be in SSC :wink2:), but there seem not to be many jobs for UP around here...eh, oh well. My dreams of urban planning will stay in the virtual world on SimCity.
I'm thinking of switching majors to Accounting or Finance. I've noticed that I have more of a passion of dealing with money than with methods of production. I'm only a Sophomore, so I still have some time.

I was doing Accounting...I gotta tell you, you really have to like it, as you get deeper and deeper into the material, I was asking myself is this what I wanna be doing? I didn't have the passion for it. Finance is more fun IMO, but I don't like to deal with numbers personally, so who knows, depends on your interests.
Methods of production...kind of ties into operational management.
Xusein August 23rd, 2007, 08:14 AM Thanks for the advice! :)
I'm trending towards Finance more...I'm actually a good fan of numbers and the banking system. A friend of mine is an Accounting Major and has been telling me to avoid it like the plague! The course material in Industrial Engineering is much more drier than I originally thought.
My options are still open however...but whatever decision I make will have to be final.
I'm running out of time to be so fickle...

same.
IE is the way to go.
It is also easy to go to finance with an engineering degree, than the other way around. Consulting is also an option, something like 60% of our graduating class go work for consulting companies like McKinsey&Company, Accenture, Bain&Company, Monitor Group etc...

accounting is more about analyzing and communication than just number crunching, of course attention to detail is important but accounting does not involve any hard core math you will see in finance, engineering, or actuarial science...
accounting also does not need programming...finance involves a lot of programming.

Yes, I'm quite aware that it is about analysing and communication. Still a fair bit of number-crunching - the type of number-crunching that I enjoy.

Many people are here only from interest of highrise buildings and enjoying good architecture :)
atomek October 22nd, 2007, 01:24 PM ... and some do not care about architekture. Where and how fast the development takes place is important, but not how the buildings look like. Who am I to judge the visual form since I am not certified designer ;)
I do like some architekture but remembering that none element works on its own (like a building in a city) I focus more on a bigger scale and less on visual aspects.

thecarlost January 17th, 2008, 03:18 AM I have a question here:
Are urban studies/planning and civil engineering related?
Totally.
Specially if your Civ.Eng minor is Design/Construction Water Supply Facilities, Water Quality, etc.
Transportation, Design/Construction.
Urban Planning will set you upon the area of intervention and the needs, so you can decide according to your criteria, what "thing" should be applied.

You know you can major in more than one area? For example, I'm about to change my major from political science to both political science and geography, with a minor in history. Or, you can also just go general education major and take different classes until you figure out what you like best.
I didn't know what I wanted to do straight out of high school, so I took about 3 years off before returning to college and I think it really helped me set definite goals. Of course, this approach doesn't work for everyone.
Me, I'm hoping to continue on to graduate school for urban planning at a university nearby. However, no matter what you end up with as your major, the good thing about the US is that you can pretty much go into most graduate schools anyway. It's more dependent on how your grades were, what college or university you went to, and, of course, how much money you're willing to spend. ;)
Hope that helps.
