View Full Version : Sunderland and Durham Area - Questions, Posers and Peculiarities
horokeio January 10th, 2011, 03:45 PM Looking at the interesting and very readable threads on the Newcastle subforum has prompted me to set up a similar one here, to cover questions regulars or visitors may want answering, old pictures that may need identifying, and the occasional interesting fact or quiz question.
I'll get the ball rolling with an easy one.
Where was this picture taken?

Judging by the shops on the left, the roundabout at the bottom of Strawberry Bank?
denm January 11th, 2011, 03:28 PM Judging by the shops on the left, the roundabout at the bottom of Strawberry Bank?
Aye, --you could be right YM, ---looking at where those shops are situated, --I would guess it's the roundabout of the Q, Alex Road and Tunstall Road/Strawberry Bank.
PaulWilson January 13th, 2011, 01:39 AM I remember a few years ago there was talk of Tesco opening in the town but these talks seem to have stalled does anyone know what is happening and if we are still getting a store.
Also any news on the North Blunts site / old Safeway as I've also heard plans to convert both sites to new supermarkets aswell. If anyone has any info, I would be greatful for the news

There are plans in for the College site (Tesco), North Blunts and the Argos / Safeway sites. The latter one having revised plans submitted recently. All plans are now with Durham CC for consideration. I had thought that planning would have been concluded before Christmas but can find nothing on the DCC site at the moment. It would be interesting to know what is going on and the reason for the delay. It would be fair to say though that only one scheme is likley to proceed.
Edit - The planning applocation for the Argos / Safewat site was submitted 13 September 2010 and is "Pending", it is at the "Committee" stage. No idea how long that might take.
Link to application on DCC site-

Hope this helps
horokeio January 15th, 2011, 12:10 AM Well done to both YM and Denm, who have guessed correctly that it is the row of shops at the bottom of Strawberry Bank.
horokeio January 15th, 2011, 12:23 AM Anyone fancy hazarding a guess as to where this one was taken? It's a bit tougher than the first one. (Courtesy J Cook):

Think it's bottom of Chester Road.
mackem35 January 22nd, 2011, 10:05 PM Denm, think you are correct as I am 99.99% sure it is the bottom of Chester Road / Junction St Marks Road.

Agree, I think the tram is about to turn right down Western Hill.
It's a shame the railway bridge isn't there any more, or the railway for that matter.

Aye, --it's great to see these old photos, --especially of the Trams, --don't think we will see the likes again.
horokeio January 23rd, 2011, 09:13 PM Yes you're all absolutely right - bottom of Chester Road near the Royalty.
I very much doubt we'll see trams again on the streets of Sunderland, certainly in the foreseeable future, though they have made a comeback across the country in the past decade or two, with comprehensive systems in Croydon and Manchester, and half-decent efforts in Edinburgh, Nottingham, Sheffield and the West Midlands.

What stands on the site of this old building, Robsons Flour Mill?

You have me stumped on this on horokeio. I feel like I recognise the dry-stone wall and railing through, can't think from where though...

Is part of the University on this site now ?
horokeio January 25th, 2011, 05:44 PM Denm is closest so far, but I'll leave it open a little while longer.

Was it near the Murray Library --and part of what is now St Michael's Way ?
horokeio January 28th, 2011, 02:38 AM Yes you're correct! St Michael's Way runs through the middle of the site now, near the Chester Road (or 'Minster') junction. I'll put my thinking cap on and come up with another in due course... watch this space!
denm February 1st, 2011, 03:39 PM Okay, --here's a poser, ---where was this building, --and what stands on the site now? --it's fairly easy like.:)

Newcastle Historian February 1st, 2011, 04:51 PM ^^
I've got to have a go at this one, because I will very rarely get any right on this thread, I'm sure!!!
It is the great old Binns Department Store, on the corner of John Street and Borough Road.
Is that where 'The William Jameson' (Wetherspoons) is?
Not sure if I've got the right corner . . .
(PS, I remember part of this, from a post on the 'Old Photos' thread!!)

Looks like the old Hitchins in Fawcett Street, ----great looking building, cheers.
horokeio February 21st, 2011, 07:59 PM Yes it was on Fawcett Street, still is in fact, and one of the nicest red brick buildings remaining in town.
