President Rupiah Banda has predicted that Zambia would one day grab the African Cup title. Addressing soccer fans who turned up to have a glimpse of the President and the visiting Chinese Premier, President Banda predicted that the Africa Cup was coming to Zambia in-light of the earmarked construction of the modern stadia in the country.

Mr Banda observed that Zambia merely participated in the continental tournaments but failed to deliver and grab the Cup because both the people and the Chipolopolo Boys including many other players were not motivated owing to poor infrastructures in the country.

“Africa Cup title will be crowned to our country, be rest assured, he said. The happy-looking Banda told the fans to support Government in its programs of developing football including other sports disciplines in the country.

The president was speaking today when he laid a foundation stone at the location where the state of art Lusaka Independence Stadium is to be constructed with the help of the Chinese government at a cost of US$94 million with a capacity to hold 50 000 people.

THE 45,000-seater state-of the-art Ndola Stadium is expected to be completed three months ahead of schedule in June from the initial October deadline.

And Bank of Zambia (BoZ) governor Caleb Fundanga who has described the stadium as a masterpiece said the completion of the Ndola Stadium ahead of schedule was a record breaker.

Once the stadium is completed, it would mean that the national soccer team would play the remaining 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football qualifiers and other major international matches at the Ndola stadium.

Zambia previously used to play international matches at the Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe which has since fallen out of favour, while Nkoloma Stadium was declared unfit to host international matches of the AFCON magnitude.

Konkola was the only other alternative after the closure of the dilapidated Independence Stadium in Lusaka about five years ago.

The BoZ chief who toured the construction site yesterday said the completion of the works, three months ahead of time, was a record and described the works as impressive.

Fundanga who was amazed at the works carried out by Chinese firm, Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company (AFECC) also used the opportunity to take pictures of the stadium.

The BoZ governor said the construction of the stadium was a big development in Ndola, especially after the demolition of the Dag Hammerskjoeld Stadium with plans to erect another structure having earlier failed.

He said the construction of the stadium would place Zambia at an advantage as the country would be able to host Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions unlike at the moment when the country was incapable.

He sad with the completion of the stadium a lot of young players would be inspired to play at the pitch and the nation can once again create great players in the likes of Kalusha Bwalya.

Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company (AFECC) vice-president Chen Ju said the ultra modern stadium would be completed earlier than the initial deadline.

Chen commended Government and Ndola City Council (NCC)for being helpful during their undertaking of the project.
He said they have a work force of 1,200 workers who also include Chinese experts.

The project here will also help to improve the economy of Ndola because Chinese contractor Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company (AFECC) had employed the local workers.

During the tour of the stadium, Chen told the BOZ governor that the VIP stand at the stadium would have four floors and elevators would also be installed which will be convenient.

He said the 45,000 sitting capacity would also have a running track while the height of the VIP stand would be about 50.5 metres high.

The bank governor was accompanied by other BoZ directors, including the regional director Morris Mulomba and other staff.

Zambia will likely bid for the 2019 African cup of nations after their bid was turned down for 2015/2017 for being late. I really think they could have beaten SA but anyway 2019 looks very good for them.

DRC is stupid. We wont even get 2019. Zambia is getting ready while we are just watching. they will have their big stadiums ready in 2-3 years.

I think Independence Stadium should be demolished following the completion of the new Lusaka Stadium. And aren't the new stadiums too close in capacity. Lusaka's stadium was originally proposed at 70K, why the reduction to 50K?

sustainability + logistics
......but yes it should have been 60k for a national stadium

What happened to the other 3 stadiums?

1 under construction 1 under planning, eia etc.(living stone) its a public private project so will take longer well till government can find a partner and i guess the 4th would only be built if the country plans on bidding for some sort of tournament

:cheers2: Congrats. Although I'm not sure why would they need 4 stadiums? wouldn't it be best if they put plans for 2 and the cost of the other 2 went into more of reform or basic infrastructure?

you posted 2 where are the other two?

as i mentioned they were under planning or proposed so largely documentation , financial planning etc. also gave has pulled out of the 4th stadium....elections priorities such as infrastructure etc. were fine with the 2 structures.

this might clear up 1 or 2 things http://allafrica.com/stories/201102160372.html ..... its basically just the 2 stadias as most ppl are using the Olympic youth development center for most sports activities

We are a 70 million people nation. with 6 cities of 1+ million people and 7 cities of at least 500,000 people.
Mazembe Stadium is just 18,000 people and private. Lubumbashi city is at least 3 million people and growing fast. com'on. Lubumbashi a a very sporty city and deserves at least a 50,000 seater stadium.

Our little stadiums are always filled and more people outside, i have to say that we need five 40K seater stadiums and Seven 20K seater stadiums.

Its not a lot. building 7 stadiums that are the size of Mazembe's Stadium. those can be very easy to built, faster and cheaper. only $10 million to build one 20K Stadium with expansion in mind. that would only cost about $80 million for 7 Stadiums of 20K each:lol:.

Whilst the other 5 big stadiumS (60K, 40K, Three 30K) can all cost $350 million.

Butembo, I say, Look at what the others are doing learn from It and improve It. Therefore, I think that, the day our country will decide to build a new stadium you'll be surprised what can be done.
Just keep thinking positive or you'll end up in a deep and serious depression time if you keep on thinking why DRC can not be like the others. Thats what I do. :P

And second, we keep on being ridiculed by our small neighbors. Makes so sense at all.

I want the national stadium in lagos to be revamped, and build more modern stadiums in cities like port harcourt, calabar, kano e.t.c ...not all these athletic stadiums that were build in the 20th century

Yes, I know.

I was implying that they will always be champions. Winning the cup once in a while is not a big deal but remaining at the top is something else.

So I meant the stadiums will make that possible.
