The Würzburg Residenz (Residence) is a palace in Würzburg, Germany. It was designed by several of the leading Baroque architects. Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch, leading representants of the Austrian/South German Baroque were involved as well as Robert de Cotte and Germain Boffrand, who were prominent architects of the French Style. Balthasar Neumann, architect of the court of the Bishop of Würzburg, was the principal architect of the Residenz, which was commissioned by the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn and his brother Friedrich Carl von Schönborn in 1720 and was completed in 1744. The Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, assisted by his son, Domenico, painted frescoes in the building. The most spectacular interiors include the grand staircase, the chapel and the grand salon. The building was dubbed the "nicest parsonage in Europe" by Napoleon. It was heavily damaged in World War II, and restoration has been in progress since 1945.

The Würzburg Residence with its Court Gardens and Residence Square was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. According to the Advisory Body Evaluation, the inclusion in the List was a "measure... so clearly desirable that the proposal of the Federal Republic of Germany does not require lengthy justification... The Residence is at once the most homogeneous and the most extraordinary of the Baroque palaces... It represents a unique artistic realization by virtue of its ambitious program, the originality of creative spirit and the international character of its workshop."

I also visited the nice town of Fürth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%BCrth). It is now contiguous with the larger city of Nuremberg, the centres of the two cities being only 7 km apart.

Fürth celebrated its thousandth anniversary in 2007, its first mention being on 1 November 1007.

The historic centre of the town is to the east and south of the rivers Rednitz and Pegnitz, which join to form the Regnitz to the northwest of the Old Town. To the west of the town, on the far side of the Main-Danube Canal, is the Fürth municipal forest (Fürther Stadtwald). To the east of Fürth, at roughly the same latitude, lies Nuremberg, and to the north is the fertile market-gardening area known as the Knoblauchsland (garlic country), some of which is within the borders of the urban district of Fürth. To the south of the town is an area consisting of wide roads, the canal, and meadows.

Fürth's main district for eating out and drinking is around the Gustavstraße, which is in the Old Town, near the Rathaus. There are many small pubs, cafés and cocktail bars, as well as restaurants serving Franconian cuisine.

Shopping facilities in Fürth include the City Center mall as well as many retail shops and an open market.

Burgfarrnbach Palace (http://www.guide-to-bavaria.com/en/Burgfarrnbach-Palace-Travel-Vacation-Hotel.html) is 70 metres long and comprises 70 rooms on three floors. The two symmetrical wings share one neo-classical ballroom.

Up to the postwar period, there was a baroque tailor’s house in the castle gardens, as well as a chapel, a wooden pavilion called the “Karolienenruh” and the “Malakoff-Pavilion”, a reminder of the Crimean War. Today, the English-style garden is still a popular place for taking a walk and relaxing.

After the death of Count Gottfried in 1957 the male line of the noble family died out and the castle passed into the ownership of a donation trust named after the count Pückler-Limpurg. In 1968 the city of Fürth acquired the castle, refurbished it and has used it as city archives, scientific library and municipal museum.

In 2006 the city council decided that the municipal museum should be moved into the city centre. The empty rooms of the museum are to be turned into an art gallery, which shows the collected works of the artist Gebhardt, as well as works of other alternating artists.

A long idyllic green belt stretches along the River Pegnitz, close to Nuremberg's Old Town. Here you can follow your fancies, maybe go for an extensive walk, skate, cycle, jog, throw Frisbees for your dog. Or you can order yourself a cool light beer at the bar of the "Wies’n" beer garden, snatch a deck chair, carry both to a shady spot and leisurely dream away the day.

Freising is a town in Bavaria, Germany, and capital of the district Freising. Total population 48,500. The city is located north of Munich at the Isar river, near the Munich International Airport. Anyone taking off or landing at Munich airport can see the city to the north with its two famous hills, the cathedral hill with the bishop's castle and the Freising cathedral and the Weihenstephan hill with the oldest brewery in the world.

Memmelsdorf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memmelsdorf) is a community in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg bordering in the west directly on the city of Bamberg.

As with most places in the Bamberg district, this community’s exact founding time cannot be established. However, looking back through the properties of the royal chamber estate in Memmelsdorf yields a founding time sometime about 900. Since there were no local monasteries at that time, there is today a lack of historical accounts about settlement here.

About 1120, evidence crops up of Mam’s, Mamo’s or Memo’s village (Dorf in German). A Frank by the name of Mamo is the namesake of Memenstorf, Memistorf, Mamestorf or Mamenestorf – the place now known as Memmelsdorf. From road names that have been handed down it is assumed that this founding, lying between two brooks, safeguarded old traffic routes.

- 1248 Founding of Memmelsdorf lower court district

Memmelsdorf belonged to the High Monastery at Bamberg and was the seat of a princely Vogt (reeve). Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the community has belonged to Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, today’s community came into being under the Gemeindeedikt (“Community Edict”) of 1818.

After secularization it fell into disrepair under private ownership, and by the end of the 20th century extensive renovation work was necessary.

Most of the palace is today used by the Bavarian State Conservation Office.

The nine state rooms of the restored Prince-Bishops' apartment, including the "White Hall" with its magnificent ceiling painting by Guiseppe Appiani, are open to the public.

Among the features reflecting the splendour of the former internal link Rococo garden are the restored cascade with its waterworks and some of the original sandstone sculptures by Ferdinand Tietz.

Forchheim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forchheim) is a large town in Upper Franconia (German: Oberfranken) in northern Bavaria, and also the seat of the administrative district of Forchheim. Forchheim is a former royal city, and is sometimes called the “Gateway to the Franconian Switzerland”, as the region is known. Its population, as of October 2008, was 30,806, and its land area is 44.95 km². Its position is 49° 44' N, 11° 04' E, and its elevation is 265 m above sea level.

In 2005, Forchheim celebrated its 1,200th anniversary of first documentary mention, on the occasion of which the Deutsche Post (German Post) issued special commemorative stamps worth 45 cents. In 2004, the city played host to the Bavarian provincial Exhibition. There were about 199,100 visitors.

Ansbach is situated 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Nuremberg and 90 miles (140 km) north of Munich, on the Fränkische Rezat, a tributary of the Main river. Population: 40,723 (2004).

Ansbach is location of the Ansbach University of Applied Sciences. The city is connected by the autobahn A6 and the highways B13 and B14. Ansbach station is on the Nürnberg–Crailsheim and Treuchtlingen–Würzburg railways and is the terminus of line S4 of the Nuremberg S-Bahn.

Bayreuth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayreuth) (German pronunciation: [baɪˈʁɔʏt]; Upper Franconian: [ba(ː)ˈɾaɪ̯t]; English: /beɪˈruːθ/) is a sizeable town in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. The town's roots date back to 1194 and it is nowadays the capital of Upper Franconia with a population of 72,576 (2009). It is world-famous for its annual Bayreuth Festival at which performances of operas by the 19th century German composer Richard Wagner are presented.

Bayreuth lies on the Red Main river, the southern of the two headstreams of the River Main, between the Fichtelgebirge Mountains and Franconian Switzerland.

Bayreuth's twin towns

The town of Bayreuth has twinning partnerships with the following towns:

- Annecy, France, since 1966
- Rudolstadt, Thuringia, since 1990
- La Spezia, Italy, since 1999
- District 6, Prague, Czech Republic, since 2008

Further twinnings with other European towns are planned. Under discussion are Shrewsbury, United Kingdom, and Tekirdağ in western Turkey.

The town is best known for its association with the composer Richard Wagner, who lived in Bayreuth from 1872 until his death in 1883. Wagner's villa, "Wahnfried", was constructed in Bayreuth under the sponsorship of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and was converted after World War II into a Wagner Museum. To the north of Bayreuth is the Festival Hall, an opera house specially constructed for and exclusively devoted to the performance of Wagner's operas. The premieres of the final two works of Wagner's Ring Cycle ("Siegfried" and "Götterdämmerung"); the cycle as a whole; and of Parsifal took place here.

Every summer, Wagner's operas are performed at the Festspielhaus during the month-long Richard Wagner Festival, commonly known as the Bayreuth Festival. The Festival draws thousands each year, and has persistently been sold out since its inauguration in 1876. Currently, waiting lists for tickets can stretch for 10 years or more.

Owing to Wagner's relationship with the then unknown philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, the first Bayreuth festival is cited as a key turning point in Nietzsche's philosophical development. Though at first an enthusiastic champion of Wagner's music, Nietzsche ultimately became hostile, viewing the festival and its revellers as symptom of cultural decay and bourgeois decadence —an event which led him to turn his eye upon the moral values esteemed by society as a whole.

First some info:
Ingolstadt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingolstadt) is a city in the Free State of Bavaria, in the Federal Republic of Germany. It is located along the banks of the Danube River, in the center of Bavaria. As at 31 March 2011, Ingolstadt had 125,407 residents. It is part of the Munich Metropolitan Area, which has a total population of more than 5 million.

The Illuminati, a Bavarian secret society, was founded in Ingolstadt in the late 18th century.

Ingolstadt is the setting for the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, for the monster created by the scientist Victor Frankenstein.

It is the site of the headquarters of the German automobile manufacturer Audi, defence aircraft manufacturer Cassidian Air Systems (formerly EADS DS) and electronic stores Media Markt and Saturn.

Ingolstadt Central Station has been connected to Nuremberg by a high-speed rail link since May 2006. Ingolstadt also has a second passenger station at Ingolstadt Nord.
