Monorail to chug into walled city

In an attempt to ease Ahmedabad’s traffic woes, the state government is planning to introduce monorail in the walled city. The work on the prestigious project will begin soon as the Urban Development Department has inked an MoU worth Rs 5,000 crore with L&T to build the network for the rail project.

The walled city is the worst traffic-hit area due to narrow roads and congested lanes. “The area requires a mass transit system that can attract people. As the walled city doesn’t have space for BRTS, Monorail is the best suited for the area. It is the best solution for traffic congestion,” said Urban Development Department Additional Chief Secretary B K Sinha who signed the MoU with L&T on the second day of the vibrant summit on Thursday.

Four corridors identified

Four possible corridors have been identified in project design. According to the plan, Kalupur Railway Station will be the main junction or starting point for all the four routes.

The first corridor will connect the railway station to ST terminal (Geeta mandir) while the second will be connecting Kalupur to Lal Darwaja via Gandhi Road. The monorail will run between Kalupur and Lal Darwaja via Relief Road on the third route while fourth corridor will link Kalupur with Commerce six roads via Delhi Darwaja.

The department, said sources, is also considering to connect monorail with other mass transit systems like BRTS, sky bus and metro train. “The idea to connect monorail with other mass transit systems will be executed in the second phase of the project,” said the source

I read about it just a few days back, isn't it too early to start a thread. Even the metro is still byond the horizon.

Both articles contradict each other

The latter one works more in case of a monorail as it's better not to have a terminus station in a monorail route

The other one, where the routes fan out from Kalupur doesn't seem too realistic.

So, at the end of the day, Kalupur will have Underground metro, monorail, national rail, and elevated BRTS, and AMTS Bus. That's quite a mess.

Yup, I agree with you. Its too early to start this thread.

@Kuwaronline....MOU doens't mean that the contract is in the place to build Mono Rail. Its just MOU nothing more.
