But there are certain words which are quite different from Hindi.

Let us first start with Sufi songs then. My personal preference would be for a Sufi song - the type I think I hear in an Indian store in NJ which is Punjabi owned. When you have had a peg or two, let us move on to desi. :banana:

True. Many of my friends had the following questions or thoughts especially before the last decade when India's economy was growing steadily and people were freely moving across the country in search of jobs.

1. Why is Robin Singh not wearing a turban? :lol:
2. If Dharmendra is a Punjabi, where is his turban and why is he not having a turban on his head? :lol:
3. All Indian Punjabis are Sikhs and all Pak Punjabis are Muslims. :lol:

Things have changed for the most part. However, the steretype image is the same like how a Tamilian is represented in the Bollywood and in those comedy serials on DD in the 90s - with the 3 horizontal stripes on his forehead and mostly bald. :lol::lol:

Chennai - stereotypes exist everywhere.. not only in India. We Maharashtrians are popularly shown as Ghaatis (hill-billies) or typically a woman wearing 9-yard sari doing household chores in a TV serial or Hindi movie.

Why only Hindi movies? In the south, Maharashtrians are often referred to as Marathas instead of Marathi/Maharashtrians. Also, we are often referred often with a smirk as "you Marathas" as if we looted the south ! :lol: (Maharashtrian - is, in my opinion, an anglicised bastardisation of reference to people of Maharashtra).

Back to the Punjoos here.

Apart from the Bhangda, Gidda, what other FOLK Musical forms exist in Punjabi culture?

Going back to Chennai's questions, what EXACTLY is the deal with Punjabi Hindu boys becoming Sikhs ?

Sikhs are largely jats and maraasis and Nihankaaris only? Or are there other sub-sects?
Are Nirankari Sikhs vegies? Also why do they wear white turbans?

What's the deal with JATS ! Jats are found in Punjab (Sikhs), Rajasthan and Haryana. How different are they ?

Last but not the least - Is tandoor naan cooked in every Pyabbi houj-hold? :P (pun intended):banana: Ahh balle:banana: Ahh balle:banana: Ahh balle :banana:Ahh balle :banana:

In my experience of interacting with people from various parts of India, I have learnt the 'English accent' across states. I can recognize Tamil, Telugu, Mallu (the easiest of all), to some extent Kannada, east India (Bihar, Bengal), GJ and Rajasthan (they don't use 'sha' and say 'sa') and finally Punjab English.

This Punjabi English accent uses 'u' at the end of the words just like Telugu but sounds different.

I

This Punjabi English accent uses 'u' at the end of the words just like Telugu but sounds different.

It's more of 'uhh' than u (oo) unless u're talking of tennu, mennu, ennu, sannu

Pyabbis have a distinct way of marauding Anglican names like

George - George-uh
Patrick - Patrick-uh
David - David-uh

Even pyabbi names don't escape the uh sync
Manpreet = Man-preet-uh
Gurpreetuh
Surjituh
Hardeepuh

If the names end in the vowel / sound ee/eey then the inflection stress is on the mid nasal spelling like

Mandy = MaNNNdeee
Brandy = BraNNDee
Sandy = Sanndy
Pinky = Pinggg-kee
Garry = Garr-eee

even words like and / sand / brand / end up with the typical pyabbi 'uh'

MOD / Euro
Why is it that Sikhs are more honest than Hindu Punjabis?

Punjabi along with Hindi/Urdu is a descendant of Sauraseni, which was a very important language in medieval northern India. Many important religious documents (particularly of the Jain religion), also important dramatic texts were written in the language.

Punjabi itself became a separate language after the 12th century. Initially it was transmitted orally, but literature developed after the rise of Sikhism and the Sufi order.

True. Many of my friends had the following questions or thoughts, especially before the last decade when India's economy was growing steadily and people were freely moving across the country in search of jobs.

1. Why are Robin Singh and Yuvraj Singh not wearing a turban? :lol:

Robin singh is not Punjabi. Before sikh religion, all were hindus and Singh is surname/middle name of the rajput/jat communities of north India.So if somebody has singh somewhere in his name, it does not mean that he is punjabi or sikh. But if someone is ethnic Punjabi and he has singh somewhere in his name then it means:-

a) He is a sikh. If he has long hair,a untrimmed long beard and turban, then is "keshdhari" sikh. If wear "Kirpaan" also then he is Amritdhari sikh( no alcohol and meat ).

Main Sikh communities of Punjab--a1) Jat Sikh:- Most dominant politically and influence,

Traditionally kings, Landlords,Army,police,sports,beaurocrats, with new economy businessmen and real estate agents also. Mostly found in Punjab region and abroad

Apart from being Keshdhari/amritdhari, some of these donot keep long hair,beard and turban e.g. Dharmender/Yuvraj. Some wear turband and trim the beard.This community rarely use some sticking agent to their beard like some other sikh communities. This community is the Millitant face of sikh religion.Some of them use only singh as surname and some use singh as middle name. Most common family names are Sidhu,sandhu,Dhillon,Brar,Gill,Mann,Deol,Cheema,Grewal etc. Jat communities of same surnames residing in Haryana are Hindus as well as Sikhs and in Pakistan they are muslims.Rural landscape is dominated by these communties.These are face of the rough/rusty Punjab

a2) "Papa" Sikh:-The business class Sikh communtiy of Punjab.Mostly found in city/town environment.Dominate the business envrionment, educated and traders. Donot keep open beard and use of sticky agent to keep beard tidy.Donot trim beard and always keep long hair and wear turban. Found motsly all over India, especially in Delhi and big cities and Punjab. Most of them have origin in Pakistani Punjab.They always have Singh as middle name.Common surnames:-Walia,Bhatia,Arora,Sawhney etc.

a3)Mazhabi Sikhs:- Low caste Hindu converts to Sikhism

a4) Chamar Sikhs "Ravidasia":- Low caste "Chamar" sikhs, Guru Ravi Das is very important for them

The 60% of ethnic punjabis living in Punjab are sikhs an rest are Hindus.

Hindu Punjabis:-

Brahmin class-Sharma,Bhanot, etc.

Hindu Khatri(Kshatriya):-Khanna, Chopra,Arora,Sawhney. Some of them have common surnames with "PAPA sikh" community.Mostly immigrants from Pakistani Punjab in 1947.Mostly found in Urban centers and Delhi area

Baniya Class:- Gupta, aagarwal,Jindal,Mittal etc.

SC:-
