gm2263 August 31st, 2004, 10:55 AM Yep, that's what was missing from this forum. OK, here we are:
The National Insurance company belongs to the national bank of Greece. The building has been designed by the famous architect Mario Botta, who also designed one of the buildings of the National Bank of Greece (obviously this bank has many properties around Athens) located in the Kotzias Square (also known as the Municipality's Square) in central Athens. Both designs are characterised by the use of bricks as a surface covering medium, giving the buildings a "Northenr European" look in contraxt to the usual concrete surfaces that we see, especially in the old areas of Athens.
KONSTANTINOUPOLIS September 2nd, 2004, 06:07 PM The previous week I pass from the consrtuction site (I forgot my digi-cam :D ) and I notice that this “thing” is very big and I mean the complex. As for the barrier it isn’t a problem. The first thing you will notice is the imposing main building and then all the others. Great work by Botta.

gm2263 September 3rd, 2004, 09:47 AM Actually, in Maroussi even before the end of the end of this year there will be some 50 cinema theatres in total. We need to see who is going to fill all those theatres and shopping centres.
On the other hand, Maroussi (about which I had posted a thread some time ago), has see a HUGE regeneration and looks now like a high-end European city, especially towards the municipality building and the shopping area. I hope I can bring pictures but I need to post many others I took from other spots of Athens...

KONSTANTINOUPOLIS September 15th, 2004, 08:01 AM -Marousi commercial and leisure center
http://www.lamdaolympiavillage.gr/common_images/emporiko_01big.jpg
The innovative Maroussi Commercial and Leisure Centre will bring new energy to Athens, comprising approximately 60,000 m2 of GLA, 240 units and 90,000 m2 of underground areas.Consumers in Athens can now visit a single location for all their retail, service and entertainment needs. The Centre will house the largest and best known retail brands, complemented by an extensive choice of restaurants, cafes, multiplex cinemas (15 screens), spacious areas for children's recreation, large-capacity underground parking (2,500 spaces). Inspired by the ancient Hellenic concept of "agora" the Commercial and Leisure Centre provides a central and accessible destination that combines a new alternative for shopping, leisure and casual outings for the whole family within a pleasant natural environment.
The Maroussi area is surrounded by some of the most affluent residential districts of Athens, and thus, has resulted in a marked increase in large local and multinational companies relocating their headquarters to this area. Stretching from the Attiki Odos to the Ministry of National Education & Religious Affairs, the Maroussi Centre is located at the junction of the Suburban Railway network and METRO subway, the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (bus service), the Amaroussion Municipal Transportation (bus) and Kiffisias Avenue. The Centre is scheduled for completion during Q1 of 2005.

KONSTANTINOUPOLIS November 7th, 2004, 03:04 PM FOUNDATION OF THE HELLENIC WORLD-Hellenic Cosmos Thematic Park
http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/02_spatial_scenarios/02_photos_enlrg/imeland_01.jpg
The project involves the reutilisation of a large dilapidated industrial site through its conversion into a thematic park: an open-air museum of the history of Hellenism. The proposed scheme elaborates a spatial scenario which is based on characteristic hellenic landscape themes, as the latter have become inseparable parts of the hellenic culture through the centuries (as met in myths, tales, real historic events etc). Spaces like the gorge, the small clear-water lake, the modest waterfall, the beach, the cliff and the narrow passage, are introduced to organize the 70.000 sq.m. site, as well as the movement and resting areas of the visitors. They are introduced both as installations which would undertake temporary or permanent functions and as linking spaces between the Museum of Hellenism in Asia Minor, the art/education centre for children, the church, the building of the temporal exhibitions, the virtual reality dome, the conference centre, two restaurants, two cafes, and the offices of the Hellenic Cosmos Institution.

FOUNDATION OF THE HELLENIC WORLD-Museum of Hellenism in Asia Minor
http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/ime/project_ime/project_IME_08.gif
The building concept concerns a museum of history - not original historical exhibits. The design principle is based on the spatio-psychoanalytic concept of lack (deeply routed in Greek culture) as critique against the notions of 'collection'/ 'acquisition'. Both as sense of loss of original pieces as well as creative spatial process, lack, led to the formulation of a new museological approach integrating exhibition and builiding into one. Spatiality is conceived, psychoanalytically, as the mode of history, and highlighted both as the major diachronic documentation of Greek civilisation (recurring, homeomorphing, collocating) and the main concept of the building: a spatial monument as opposed to a symbolic memorial.
The proposed continuous strip, self-evolving across the building, produces homeomorphic curved schemes in three distinct, spatial gestures/installations: a) the amphitheatre presenting Classical Antiquity, b) the dome presenting Byzantium, c) the sheltering cell presenting Modern times (17th - early 20th century), covering the overall museum space. Accordingly, three distinct lighting treatments are proposed: a) bright daylight, small sharp shadows, b) indirect, ambient, no shadows, c) cinematic side-lighting, long shadows. Yet, the strip surface employs a gradient synthesis of materials and construction techniques - varying from: a) tectonic, marble, stone, b) cast material, c) timber, glass and metal structures. Client: Foundation of Hellenic World, Athens. Total exhibition space: 3500 sq.m
The concept
http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/ime/ime_concept_images/ime_concept_01.jpg
The building concept concerns a museum of history - not original historical pieces. It highlights three major historic periods in Greek civilisation: Classical Antiquity, Byzantium, Modern Times: 17th - early 20th century (involving the ultimate expatriation of the Greeks from Asia Minor in 1922, and the rise of new homelands in Greece), also emphasising the intermediate role of Prehistoric, Hellenistic, Roman and Ottoman periods. It belongs to the theme park of the Hellenic Cosmos, whose landscape is also designed by Anamorphosis.
Anamorphosis proposes a spatial-psychoanalytic approach of Greek history which it regards as a permanent exchange between Greece and Asia Minor - the motherland and the "opposite side": a side both own and unknown.
The "missing" of the authentic pieces is seen as guidance rather than disadvantage. The psychoanalytic concept of lack becomes the main design principle. Lack is the spatial critique of the narcissistic making (or unmaking) of the object; it involves both a familiarisation with the loss of it (the original piece, the beloved …) and a creative spatial process of overcoming loss after the completion of mourning. In this context Anamorphosis sees lack as a real condition deeply and repeatedly experienced throughout Greek history, but also as an opportunity for developing a new, critical, museological approach - a spatial museology - vis a vis the notions of "collection" and "acquisition" which are emblematic of today's "museum-culture". That is a total museological approach which activates the untimely, real historic space, beyond the symbolic commemorations of the past.
Spatiality, in the context of lack, is both the major diachronic documentation of Greek civilisation and a critical design concept. Space, instead of becoming a neutral canvas for inscription of negativity and endless melancholic lamenting over the lost property, is hereby activated through recurring, homeomorphing and collocating processes. "Exhibition" and "building" merge as the presentation of historical material and the actual building parts are synthesised into one extended space progressing from large structural elements to mixed-media installations destined to "replace" the absent exhibits. Anamorphosis designs a spatial monument, by reactivating the physicality of historic forms. The "amphitheatre", the "dome", and the "(self-)sheltering structure", share a natural homeomorphy producing a spatial scenario. These are neither symbolic objects, nor abstract sculptural themes, but real spatial experiences (involving distinct qualities of lighting, material and collective function) constantly appearing in various occasions throughout greek history, thus manifesting an intelligence of their own. They are resynthesised in one continuous self-anamorphosed surface: a gesture of morphic persistence and exchangeability across the building, which produces the three major spatial installations of the museum: a) the amphitheatre presenting Classical Antiquity, b) the dome presenting Byzantium, c) the (self-)sheltering cell (covering the previous two installations and overall museum space) presenting Modern Times.
http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/ime/ime_concept_images/ime_concept_02.jpg
The three installations are distinct spatial experiences elaborated at the levels of lighting and collective function, including respectively: a) bright daylight, small sharp shadows and meeting place; b) indirect, ambient light, no shadows, and congregation place, c) moving image, cinematic side-lighting, long shadows, and audience gathering place. Yet, the strip surface employs a gradient synthesis of materials and construction techniques including: a) tectonic, marble, stone…, b) cast material, spolio…, c) timber, glass and metal structures. The main visitor's route along the main strip surface is always doubly related to the major installations, offering both direct access as well as distant (anticipatory or concluding) views of them.
The 3 installations
http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/ime/ime_threeinstal/ime_threeinstal_08.jpg
By metaphorising the standard architectural terms one could say that: the Classical Antiquity - Amphitheatre installation conveys the experience/practice of the plan (ie an experience of space directly open to the sky above); the Byzantium - Dome installation conveys the experience of the section (ie an experience of spatial intimacy, cutting across space); and the Modern Times - Sheltering Cell installation conveys the experience of the perspective (ie an experience of space via envisaged projections, as recapitulations of the past and anticipations of the future).
The three installations are designed as three distinct spatial experiences. Their elaboration focuses on four aspects: lighting, materials, documentation and function

Light

Light becomes one of the major design principles of the museum. Light is what makes form to exist. Light is not the means of seeing space, but it is part of the spatial process itself. It has not to do with the visibility or distinctness of objects, but with the way in which space manifests itself as diachronic cultural principle. Light is an indigenous design principle common to all mediterranean world.
In his conversation with Picasso, the greek poet O.Elytis argued that the difference between surrealism in Greece and surrealism in Europe lies in the operation of natural light. In his words, light upgrades the project of surrealism,
reveals its full rigor and extends its operationality.
In the 60’s the greek surrealist poet A.Empirikos wrote:
" Oh God! This searing heat is necessary to produce such light. This light is necessary so that one day it may become a common glory, a universal glory, the glory of Hellenes, who were the first in this world, I think, to make out of the fear of death an erotic urge for life ". Andreas Empirikos: In the Street of Philhellenes, in "Tracing Architecture", AD/ Architectural Design Magazine guest edited by Nikos Georgiadis, London 1998. p.27
The principle of Anamorphosis as spartial experience and technique
http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/ime/ime_principle_images/AMmu_model04.jpg
Anamorphosis is the spatial understanding of history and its role as fundamental PSYCHOANALYTIC/PSYCHOSYNTHETIC process, beyond any symbolic preconception or nostalgic commemoration (traumatic or other). It is not a way of seeing history; it is rather a process via which history looks back at us, and in that sense it re-shapes the future optimistically.
Anamorphosis as a psychic process introduces not the question of thinking about space or the environment, but the question of THINKING WITH SPACE AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
Anamorphosis is the MODE OF HISTORY: the way in which history recurs and ‘repeats itself’ without our knowing why. It is the persistence of the spatiality of events: the morphic excess of the historic and the suspense of the historical.
Anamorphosis is the spatial experience of Greek Civilisation: a process of recurrence, homeomorphy and collocation ©. It is a morphic relation with the other, the ‘opposite’ side, a side both OWN and UNKNOWN.
Anamorphosis is a critique of the disinterested logocentric or agnostic individual. It is the reintroduction of the SPECTATOR’S INTEREST via real spatial processes. It is a technique of spatial precision, critical of the accidental, amorphous and frequential considerations of space.
Anamorphosis takes a spatial approach to museology. It inverts the relationship between viewer and exhibit. As the exhibits lose their object-property and become part of one extended space, exhibition and Museum merge into one SPATIAL MONUMENT
