View Full Version : Sports you'd like, or not like, to see at the Olympics.
dynamoultraclean August 31st, 2004, 05:07 PM Personally, as I sitting watching the Olympics I was astounded Netball wasn't an Olympic sport. Considering men have European handball, maybe women should play Netball? I'd like to see this at the Olympics along with pool/billiards/snooker. I think netball has more of a chance of getting in. Are there any sports you guys wish to see at the Olympics?
As far as I'm concerned the mockery that is synchronized swimming should be abolished. Also, I don't feel much emphasis is placed on the tennis at the Olympics.
Blend August 31st, 2004, 05:31 PM Rugby Union. I would say league, but Union is more widely played.
i also think its stupid how some sports like handball get put in, where other more popular team sports like Union or even league dont get in.
I would say cricket (i dont like the sport btw) but obviously time comes into it..
mostly i say 1 form of rugby needs to go in.
zion August 31st, 2004, 06:11 PM The Olympic lost its magics when then introduce professional Tennis.
Sport like Tennis, Cricket, Rugby already have their major touraments.
e.g World cup. They should not really be included, since they already have good following.
But games, like Handball, waterpolo, volleyball, softball, hockey should be in Olympics, to increase awareness. And also give many unknown an opportunity to be known.
I agree: Women's Netball should be in.
sirbugalugs August 31st, 2004, 06:26 PM Rugby Union. I would say league, but Union is more widely played.

I don't know how you can even mention rugby league as an olympic sport. I don't know where you get the impression that RL is anything other than a very very minor sport. Maybe the last RL 'world cup' wasn't a big enough embarrassment for you.
If Union was more popular in the US it may have some chance. Which is the critical point here, the US is the most important part of the olympics. Any sport which doesn't have a profile in the US or Europe to a lesser extent has very little chance of being included. So sports such as cricket, rugby union and netball have virtually no chance of getting in the olympic program.
If golf wasn't full of self-obsessed overpayed pricks it would be great to see it in the olympics. Of course it could only be played as long as it didn't conflict with some no-name event played at some shit hole in South Africa for an obscene amount of money.
Bring on the darts! More fat blokes at the olympics I say. :)
Aussie Bhoy August 31st, 2004, 06:41 PM I would take out the sports that already have proper world competitions, such as tennis and football.
I would also restrict some of the more obscure events such as shooting. I don't mind having some categories in, but there are too many when you start including events like the 3 metre air rifle and 3 metre air pistol.
Synchronised swimming and diving, and the different long distance walks all seem silly as well.
I don't see why Tae Kwon Do has to be in, you don't have Karate, or Kung-fu, Ju-Jitsu, etc, etc, etc. It was boring to watch anyway, I guess movies have given me the wrong idea about what it should look like.
I'd include Netball, but not either type of Rugby (or sevens), and parlour games such as billiards, snooker or pool. Next you will have people wanting darts to be in. In fact, on that subject get rid of ping pong as well.
Tony P September 1st, 2004, 02:57 AM I'm peeved that Sydney didn't introduce long distance/marathon swimming.
20 kilometres or 50 Kilometres so so. Susie Maroney would have been a guarrenteed gold medallist for the next few Olympics, and I doubt any Aussie would have lost the race for centuries! We're world champions in the sport.
Blend September 1st, 2004, 03:00 AM sirbug,
It is played in Europe and Oceania. And as i clearly stated, i chose UNION over league due to the fact that it is more widely played.
AND also, like zion just said, minor sports get in the olympics to increwase awareness. Im sure League would be more played than handball :|
and i dont know how you can go saying sports need US or European support to get in. Thats one of the stupidest tihngs ive heard. if that was the case why isnt american football in? cricket? ice hockey?
Uniion should be in. on that note america actually plays it. and europe as well. AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES
jacobsian September 1st, 2004, 03:56 AM ^^ you may find that Ice Hockey isn't in the summer olympics because... ah forget it...
zion September 1st, 2004, 04:12 AM Err Blend: Ice hockey is in winter games.
James Saito September 1st, 2004, 05:25 AM There is a valid reason why Rugby is not an olympic sport.
It is because Rugby is so hard, you can't play the game everyday.
RUM September 1st, 2004, 05:30 AM HANDBALL:- Just because it isn't widely played here, doesn't mean it isn't widely played worldwide. It is one of the oldest sports in the world. It looked awesome on the TV. I would say more people play this sport than rugby, and it is played in more countries than cricket. BTW, I am talking about the elite leavels of the sport, not social stuff.
Why? Because, it eliminates the argument, "Handball is not played in Austrlia, yet Cricket is played Argentina, and Rugby is played in Zaire."
now, continue....
Triathalon and Beach Volleyball have been the best two recent inclusions to the Olympic Games if you ask me.
Jimmy James September 1st, 2004, 07:43 AM Instead of the olympic version of handball, why can't they have the version you play at school, you know with concrete and a tennis ball that is emminently better! Also why not racquetball at the olympics, that's a fast game. I think a lot of the team sports like Soccer and Basketball should be removed, although I liked Indoor Volleyball, that was exciting to watch. They should also give Tennis the flick, too many big names stay away.
Oriolus September 1st, 2004, 07:44 AM How about squash. It's played around the world (I think), requires only small facilities, games don't take that long & does not have a high profile otherwise.
I would get rid of soccer & tennis & forget about the bid to have ballroom dancing as an Olympic sport (this page (http://www.comedyzine.com/tirade31.html) was pretty funny - it suggests if ballroom dancing makes it then sex should be an Olympic sport)
I don't see why Tae Kwon Do has to be in, you don't have Karate, or Kung-fu, Ju-Jitsu, etc, etc, etc. It was boring to watch anyway, I guess movies have given me the wrong idea about what it should look like.
When I was watching it I kept waiting for someone to leap slow motion through the air with legs cycling to deliver a perfect kick to the unsuspecting opponent.
By the way Aussie Bhoy table tennis is cool, particularly when they get a good rally going.
Avatar September 1st, 2004, 09:57 AM Snorting drugs should be an olympic sport... see who can take the most and not pass out - would provide some interest and originality.
sirbugalugs September 1st, 2004, 10:08 AM ^^ you may find that Ice Hockey isn't in the summer olympics because... ah forget it...
Says it all.
SydneyDude September 1st, 2004, 10:35 AM Maybe the last RL 'world cup' wasn't a big enough embarrassment for you.
lol, ur such a melbournian :runaway: :P
TOCC September 1st, 2004, 10:39 AM soccer and tennis should be removed, tennis doesnt even include the best players and theres enough international tournaments for it already. Soccer in the olympics is overshadowed by the Euro comp and RWC. Basketball isnt too bad actually, ive always found it entertaining and its the only decent international comp for the sport.
Just a note, Rugby used to be in the Olympics earlier this century but was excluded for various reasons after that, but the USA actually are the reigning champions in the sport by winning the last Gold medal. It was oncw the main sport at all th top unis over there.
sirbugalugs September 1st, 2004, 10:44 AM lol, ur such a melbournian :runaway: :P
No, I'm a Melburnian. ;)
ForeverSalfordRed September 14th, 2004, 07:38 AM Rugby League - simply the best (except to the union bigotted trolls on this thread)!
