tanzan January 21st, 2011, 07:50 AM Is Dar the only place in Tanzania with a good selection of shopping mall?
Practically all are in Dar. Big malls is a new concept in Tanzania. Many are in construction stage and one is put on hold.
Put on hold: USD 33 million Dar Village.
On construction:
1. Uhuru Heights mall
2. IT Plaza mall
3. Arcade mall
4. Viva tower mall
Moshi town (2 hrs from Arusha) is planning for 3 story mall.
tanzan January 21st, 2011, 07:51 AM Quality Center in Dar is soon opening
musiccity January 21st, 2011, 03:03 PM Tanzania is booming! I looked in Dodoma but they just seem to have family run stores, no organized shopping areas from what I could tell from research. Arusha has the TFA shopping complex with a Shoprite and several other stores but its not quite as nice and pretty as the ones in Dar and there are hardly any pictures of it. I couldne find much of anything organized in Mwanza and Moshi, but its nice that Moshi's getting a mall!
musiccity January 21st, 2011, 03:04 PM And is there a thread for Moshi's new mall and the malls in Dar? Tanzania needs its own forum.

TZBoy May 23rd, 2011, 08:03 PM THE first largest shopping mall ever in East and
Central Africa to be known as Quality Center
opened to journalists to sample its values on
Wednesday before its opening soon.
The huge consumer palace located along Nyerere
Road in Dar es Salaam is 100 per cent owned by
Tanzanian company, Quality Group and is bigger
than the renowned Mlimani City at the Hill along
Sam Nujoma Road
The company’s Executive Director (Human
Resource and Information Technology), Rajiv Bali
told journalists who toured the center on
Wednesday that the center had been designed to
offer one-stop shopping and entertainment
concept.
“This is the largest shopping mall in east and
central Africa. It is designed to save the interests
off all people raging from those who wish to shop,
bank transactions, entertainments and more
others,” he said.
He said the one storey shopping complex has
unique features that make it to be a truly a new
experience in shopping mall across the region.
He said the lower flower consists of shops,
supermarket, banks, ATM zone, bureau de
change, laundry and other related facilities.
“Six different banks will have braches here; there
will be ATM zone whereby 40 ATM machines of
different banks will operate for 24 hours. There is
a biggest Cinema mall in this part of Africa. Seven cinema malls, two of them will have recording
facilities for talk shows and related events,” he
elaborated.
The director noted that, there will also be
restaurant in upper floor as well as game centre
where there will be varieties of games for children
of five years of age to adult of 55 years.
Bali, further noted hat 85 per cent of space within
the mall has already been rented adding that the
companies that have rent the place will soon start
operations.
The mall is strategically placed along Nyerere
Road has all the befitting amenities and 500 car-
parking capacity.

Its amazing how slow shopping malls have caught on in SSA. Its mostly cultural, I know in Ghana most rich people would rather shop in a market.
Apart from SA there is no real proper big "Western" shopping mall in SSA (With the possible exception of Belas Shopping in Luanda).

Even when Mlimani city was opening, many wondered if it would be sustainable with the whole new concept of shopping as opposed going to the traditional markets. Now Mlimani city has become so successful others are planning to do the same on a bigger scale.
In East & Central Africa or possibly entire SSA except SA, Nairobi has always been ahead in malls and are still building malls today. Tanzania just started recently and after Mlimani City you will see new mall projects either small or large.
I like Shamo World Tower & Shopping center...

TZBoy July 11th, 2011, 11:21 AM The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) multi-billion joint venture project for three high rise residential and shopping malls at Mchikichini in Dar es Salaam will take off this month as planned.
The USD 450m project in which the fund expects to partner with Ilala Municipal Council and Symmetric Link of Malaysia is scheduled for completion in 2013.
According to the fund’s senior investment officer, Salvatory Hinju at least 30 acres of land have been acquired for the project.
“It is a huge investment which once completed will be more than the Mlimani City mall and is expected to improve the skyline of Dar es Salaam,” he said.
Under the plan, Hinju said, the fund is going to construct three high rise office towers, a three storey shopping mall, recreation park, cinema centre and three residential towers with apartments to cater across three different segments of the population (to be sold to interested individuals).
The project’s initial study, according to him, shows that the low cost apartments will comprise 480 units in a 15 storey building, 1,165 units in a 25 storey medium cost apartments and 604 units in a 30 storey building for luxury apartments.
Apart from residential houses, he said, the business complex will comprise shopping malls, supermarkets, banks, a five star hotel and a three star hotel.
He said a block will be constructed to accommodate about 300 inhabitants of the Ilala Municipal Council houses located in the project area to give room for demolition.
These will be given preferential rates to buy apartments in the block and those who will opt to just be tenants will pay rent at an affordable rate, he said.
The Mchikichini project is one among the fund’s many investment projects that will not only serve as the fund’s source of income, but will also create employment and help solve the city’s housing crisis, he added.
Among the fund’s ongoing housing projects is the 300 Mtoni Kijichi houses in Dar es Salaam, 85 of which are already complete.
The houses whose construction started in 2008 will be ready for sale at the end of this month and are meant for middle income earners who will pay either in cash or on loan with a 15-year repayment period, he said.
Preference will be given to NSSF members who shall repay the loan at a concession rate and non members at bank rates, he said.
The remaining 215 houses which are still under construction will be complete in March next year.
NSSF has also acquired property for future development at Gezaulole, Vijibweni, Dungu and Mwongozo areas in Kigamboni.
“We have also acquired property in Mwanza and Arusha for similar projects,” Hinju said.

Very nice big and modern mall.
Kenguy July 15th, 2011, 09:08 PM Uchumi is open at Quality Center and according to the Area manager it is the biggest Uchumi supermaket in East Africa.
Also the Cinemas will open next month with 4 theaters and 3 on the second phase making total 7 cinema halls run by Fox Cinemas.
^^
If its bigger than Nairobi's Langata hyper, this mall must be really big to host an Uchumi that big.

tanzan September 27th, 2011, 10:10 AM AICC major project to affect 20 families
By Lusekelo Philemon
23rd June 2011EmailPrintCommentsAt least 20 families will soon be affected by a decision of the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) to demolish some residential houses in Soweto area.
A total of 18 housing units that are part of the AICC’s 60 residential estate located in Soweto area, in Kaloleni ward, will be demolished to pave the way for a modern shopping mall.
AICC managing director Elishilia Kaaya confirmed the new development would affect residential areas, as the AICC intends to construct the shopping centre in the northern zone.
“The new commercial complex will totally transform the face of Arusha City,” explained Kaaya, adding that it was too early to reveal the exact cost of the proposed structure.
The proposed mall space, according to the AICC managing director, will run from Mianzini junction along Moshi-Arusha road down to Florida round about area. Its sheer length is likely to stretch nearly 700 metres. Notices have already been served to tenants of the 18 housing units.
AICC, whose flagship business is operating the country's largest conference complex in Arusha, is also the proud owner of 655 residential housing units in the city where residential houses are hard to find. The AICC's residential houses are located in Soweto, Kaloleni area, Kijenge area, along Serengeti road and within the 'Corridor area' with ‘affordable’ monthly rents ranging between 120,000/- and 300,000/-.
The AICC also runs a hospital along Nyerere road in ‘Uzunguni’ area.

Something like this. The ceiling has a sky design while the shops have a classical design. Better still, they can also have store fronts with an African theme (I'm thinking Moroccan, Zulu, or even something along earthy, brightly coloured Maasai manyatta designs for the stores.):)

Upo mradi mkubwa na mzuri tu wa IBM na TATOA wenye lengo la kuipa visibility our nothern tourism circuit as a whole kupitia IBM technology and expertise. Fanyeni reserach kidogo...:)
Tanzania Association of Tour Operators Predicts Number of Tourists in Tanzania to Double by 2012
IBM (NYSE: IBM) -- The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) today announced results of a new market data study(1) predicting that the number of inbound international tourists traveling to Tanzania will double by 2012.
Tourism is the number one industry in Tanzania and the country is quickly emerging as a top tourist destination for travelers around the world with a wide range of outdoor, cultural and wildlife activities. TATO, the country's leading organization for the development and coordination across the tourism industry, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month.
TATO plays a key role in the development and growth of the tourism industry in Tanzania by providing its nearly 250 members with the latest information, advice, and tools needed to capitalize on the influx of tourists visiting the country. As the number of tourists visiting Tanzania increases, TATO will work closely with its members to use technology to improve the quality of service -- from online booking systems to the actual travel arrangements and accommodations.
"Tanzania's natural tourism product is, in many ways, unparalleled in Africa. However, the tourist experience is not measured alone on the beach or wildlife product," said Mustapha Akunnay, Executive Secretary, Tanzania Association of Tour Operators. "It is the whole continuum that starts when the tourist first arrives in the country until the moment they leave. TATO is working across this tourist value chain to improve the experience for each and every tourist entering the country."
While key travel destinations in Tanzania include the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar, there are numerous national parks and a largely undeveloped coastline, providing additional tourist sites across the country. There are extensive, but largely unvisited areas set aside as national parks, game reserves and conservation areas. Many of the local people, villages and tribes rely heavily on tourists traveling through their regions. So by helping tour companies across Tanzania grow their businesses, TATO is also making a significant impact on the economy at a country and local level.
IBM Helps TATO Improve IT and Communications
IBM's Corporate Service Corps is working with TATO to improve the organization's use of new technologies and communications strategies to work more efficiently and effectively with its members. As part of this work, the IBM team is currently working with TATO to re-launch its website and establish stronger relationships with its members and tourists.
IBM's Corporate Service Corps is a new program designed to give employees an opportunity to work in emerging markets alongside colleagues from around the world. By bringing together employees from different geographies, cultures and areas of expertise, IBM is encouraging the development of new skills as more markets play a role in the global economy.
The IBM team in Tanzania consists of nine employees from countries around the world including Costa Rica, Eritrea, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the United States, and New Zealand. Each team member has a different area of expertise including IT consulting, human resources, financial management, sales, communications, and public relations.
In addition to working with TATO, IBM's Corporate Service Corps team in Tanzania is partnering with The African Wildlife Foundation and KickStart.
About the study
In order to analyze the issues faced by the tourism industry in Tanzania, interviews were held with 20 Tanzanian tour operators and 45 foreign tour operators. To better understand consumers who have travelled to Tanzania, a team surveyed tourists at Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports, and on overland busses leaving Arusha for Nairobi. A web-based survey was also used to gather information from consumers interested in long distance travel, but not necessarily travelling to Tanzania.
In order to gain a more in depth understanding of these travellers in terms of how they select a destination and plan their trips, as well as specific issues relating to travel in Africa and Tanzania, focus groups with consumers in the United Kingdom (U.K.) and United States (U.S.) were undertaken.
According to the study, the top five source markets include the U.K., the U.S., Italy, South Africa and Germany. These markets account for over three quarters of all arrivals from the study markets, for 71 percent of wildlife safari visitors and 82 percent of beach holiday takers. Around ten percent of all visitors have been to Tanzania before and only a minority of the populations of the main tourist source countries has either traveled to Tanzania or has a clear image of the country as a tourist destination.
While TATO looks to help existing members increase tourism from these countries, the organization will also help tour companies grow business in new markets as well.

PRESS RELEASE
IBM to work with wildlife, tourism and agribusiness in Tanzania
The Corporate Service Corps of IBM launches another project to build skills and business insight while helping local organisations solve real problems
August 21, 2008
IBM (NYSE: IBM) is sending a team of its high-performing employees to assist Tanzania wildlife and tourism organisations improve their business processes and profitability.
The initiative is part of the Corporate Service Corps (CSC) programme that aims to enhance the skills of IBM employees in working with diverse cultures, policy environments and people from different parts of the world in innovative, socially responsible ways.
The team of nine IBMers will work with three non-governmental organisations, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) and KickStart. The IBM employees are from countries such as the U.S., Costa Rica, New Zealand, Italy, Japan and Germany and will arrive in Tanzania Friday, August 22. Their areas of expertise include finance and planning, business operations, cost engineering, project management, marketing and media.
IBM is sponsoring this programme as part of its commitment to training a group of leaders able to work in a globally integrated enterprise in the 21st century workplace. The globally integrated enterprise collaborates across time zones and cultures and locates its operations, functions and leadership anywhere in the world based on the right skills and business environment.
Through this programme, IBM is significantly contributing to helping to build and develop local communities so that they can participate in the global economy by deploying the core skills of the company to solve real problems.
“The CSC is unique in that it shows how IBM is impacting and influencing society and business in innovative, socially responsible ways,” said IBM sub-Saharan Africa managing director Mark Harris.
The IBM projects with the three Tanzanian organizations include the following:
AWF is implementing a programme focused on improving wildlife conservation in Tanzania’s Maasai Steppes ecosystem. AWF helps communities living around those areas establish wildlife management areas, decide how they are managed, decide how to attract investments, and decide how to benefit from revenues earned off their land, while still maintaining high environmental and conservation standards. The CSC volunteers will work with AWF to develop a strategic plan to make the areas profitable while balancing both the needs of the local communities and conservation requirements of the region. Since 1998, the American people have given over $10 million U.S. dollars to the African Wildlife Foundation through the United States Agency for International Development.
The TATO is the premier private sector coordination body for the tourism industry in Tanzania. IBM CSC leaders will, with TATO staff, design a methodology to capture the total contribution of the tourism industry to the Tanzania economy, provide consulting assistance to staff, and work with the board to improve corporate governance and financial management.
KickStart is a non-profit organisation that develops and markets new technologies in Africa. The low-cost technologies are used by local entrepreneurs to establish highly profitable small businesses. CSC volunteers will assist KickStart to develop a modular training course in sales and marketing for KickStart vendors so that they are better able to sell the technologies to farmers. They will also undertake an assessment of the best technology to be developed to analyse KickStart’s supply chain management, marketing spend, and market share in Arusha and other regions.
The CSC programme was launched in July in Ghana where a different team of IBM employees worked on various projects to assist businesses to upscale their business models. In Africa, only Ghana and Tanzania have been selected. Other countries in the world include the Philippines, Romania, Turkey and Vietnam.
IBM is committed to enable 600 of its emerging leaders to participate in the programme. One hundred IBM employees from thirty-three countries have been selected to participate in this first round, part of the Global Citizen's Portfolio initiative announced by IBM’s Global CEO and Chairman Sam Palmisano early this year.
“IBM is an innovator not just with its technology products, but how it invests in people on a global basis,” said Harris. “It is developing leaders not just in United States, but in emerging countries where the company will be spending upwards of $1.6 billion to grow markets, communities and business leaders.”

America's 'Big Blue' is coming to town. The International Business Machine (IBM) isn't going to open shop here but will be helping local tourism operations to enter the 21st century. The Arusha based, Tanzania Association of Tour Operators is hiring the services of IBM's Corporate Service Corps to improve the organization's use of new technologies and communications strategies in order to work more efficiently and effectively with its members.
TATO will now offer its members free resources including on online toolkit provided by IBM for small businesses
Tanzania gets an average of 700,000 tourists per year and over 80 percent of this figure ends up in Arusha
As part of this work, the IBM team is currently working with TATO to re-launch its website and establish stronger relationships with its members and tourists. IBM has also provided TATO and its members with free access to an online toolkit for small businesses.
IBM's Corporate Service Corps is a new program designed to give employees an opportunity to work in emerging markets alongside colleagues from around the world. By bringing together employees from different geographies, cultures and areas of expertise, IBM is encouraging the development of new skills as more markets play a role in the global economy.
"New online business toolkit provided by IBM will be available when the new website is launched. This toolkit was developed by IBM and provides resources including: Accounting and Finance; Business Planning; Human Resources; International Business; Legal and Insurance; Marketing and Sales; Operation; and Technology," said Mustafa Akonaay, the TATO Executive Secretary.
He however refuted the suggestion that his association was in the past operating under outdated office and communications set-up.
"We recently announced results of new market data study predicting that the number of inbound international tourists traveling to Tanzania will double by 2012. This is part of our new, more proactive approach to public relations as part of our work with IBM. By publicly announcing this survey, we look to position TATO as a thought leader and Tanzania as a premier tourist destination,” he added.
International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), nicknamed "Big Blue", is a multinational computer technology and consulting corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, USA. The company is one of the few information technology companies with a continuous history dating back to the 19th century.
IBM manufactures and sells computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure services, hosting services, and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.
IBM has been known through most of its recent history as the world's largest computer company; with over 388,000 employees worldwide, IBM is the largest information technology employer in the world
The IBM team in Tanzania on the other hand, consists of nine employees from countries around the world including Costa Rica, Eritrea, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the United States, and New Zealand. Each team member has a different area of expertise including IT consulting, human resources, financial management, sales, communications, and public relations.
In addition to working with TATO, IBM's Corporate Service Corps team in Tanzania is partnering with The African Wildlife Foundation and Kick-Start.
TATO was established in 1983 to represent tour operators in Tanzania and provide a common and comprehensive stand and input for the Government and in its institutions in matters pertaining to formulation of tourism policy, plans and programs.
So far there are a total of 350 licensed tour operators in Tanzania as of 2008; out of these over 250 (or about 88 percent) are members of TATO. The Association is the only government recognized representative for tour operators in Tanzania.
TATO will now offer its members free resources including on online toolkit provided by IBM for small businesses regular workshops and meetings on how to take advantage of the growing tourism industry in Tanzania, providing accurate and timely information about travel related requirements and regulations; helping with education and business leads; market Tanzania as destination; providing access to new, international customer markets; providing membership directory; offering media relations and press support; and guidance on sustainability.
The focus of the association is to pursue the interests of its members by providing advice and information to the government and its institutions on the formulation policies and legislation in relation to the tourism industry, with the aim of creating an environment for tour operators and other players that is conducive to the growth of tourism in Tanzania.
TATO aims to provide a common and comprehensive position of the tourism industry in its relations with the Government and its institutions in matters pertaining to the formulation of tourism policy, plans and programs.
TATO aims to establish and maintain high quality and standards amongst its members and other tourism intermediaries, such as hotels, reserved areas, airlines and marine transport. IBM will also be helping TATO launch its new website in October 2008.
Tanzania gets an average of 700,000 tourists per year and over 80 percent of this figure ends up in Arusha, a resort town which is gateway to almost all East African tourist attractions.
