View Full Version : So much people are Anti Korean. Are you?
Ellatur September 1st, 2004, 02:35 AM -edit at plasma169's request.
there are alot of anti korean activities going on around the world. tell me your TRUE opinion about south korea.
(and lets try to keep this thread clean ok?)
Ellatur September 1st, 2004, 02:36 AM so are YOU anti korea?
zergcerebrates September 1st, 2004, 07:09 AM I don't think people are anti-Korean, but some Koreans I must admit are a bit too proud of themselves. I am so tired of seeing "Korean Pride" written in school toilets stalls or in some public places. Thats probably causing hatred among some people.
lumpia September 1st, 2004, 08:57 AM anti-Korean? NEVER heard of that before. All the Koreans i know (to be honest not many, but it doesnt matter bout the number) are nice people. Korea is a nice country: the only thing which is depressing is North Korea; but South Korea is fine :D
maxxam80 September 1st, 2004, 10:44 AM I am British
and Koreans are very well respected in the UK
they have great restaurants here in London
I love Korea
plasma169 September 1st, 2004, 11:06 AM Ellatur, please don't post stuff like this....( Or if you can, please delete it as it is really quite embarassing for fellow Koreans/ other forumers from other countries to view this..No offence to you at all. )
That post of yours is made from a "childish teenage Korean girl", not from foreigners. Don't believe everything you saw from the internet. Almost half of the comments on your post are largely inflated rumors that was created almost 2 years ago. I've seen the exact same "text" on the site, called 한류열풍 in the year 2002. >(

I hate those too

i personally think that other korean forumers should read it and see what is going on. there is nothing embarrasing about. the comments are VERY biased and prejudiced. we all know that most of it is not true. im just trying to make everyone see some examples of anti-korean stuff going on :)
mookiecece September 1st, 2004, 09:42 PM hmm.. what happened here? I will delete this thread if nobody objects.
Ellatur September 1st, 2004, 10:19 PM don't worry. no problem here
Matthieu September 2nd, 2004, 11:13 PM I haven't seen much anti Korean stuff.
And honestly, I don't think anyone who's really anti Korean would ever admit it openly. I would mean either he is really stupid, or that he's losing all credibility.
But since some people openly admited they are anti French on this forum, I bet you can try to ask.
London™ September 3rd, 2004, 01:14 AM I've seen a few anti-Koreans here at ssc, but I doubt if any of them is still active. As far as I know, almost all of them ended up getting banned.
Dong Ha Lee September 3rd, 2004, 01:29 AM They're probably all Italians still shaken from the 2002 World Cup loss :P Seriously though, I had to stop wearing Be the Red T-shirts to school after that.
Pangu September 3rd, 2004, 01:42 AM There isn't much anti-Korean sentiments because Korea simply isn't as well-known nearly as long as its neighbors.

He's not talking about history here. What he meant was that because Korea is surrounded by giants (i.e. Russia, Japan, China, etc.), people sometimes don't even notice the presence of Korea. Well, things are much better now than a couple decades ago at least.

he said "well-known nearly AS LONG" what does "as long" have to do with prominence? as long to me means the length of time

ebck120: Anyone with half a brain would know that China and Japan are the most two well-known Asian nations to the world for the longest time. You might not feel that Korea isn't well-known because you're Korean and you're just filled with pride  but in the real world, Korea isn't that well known even with your auto and electronic industry. Not many people know that Hyundai and Samsung are from Korea although they may use their products.
So how can Korea be hated when many people don't even know it exists?
Also, Korea's neighbors, namely China and Japan, are hated for historical reasons. The reason for China is obvious. China has been the most powerful nation in the region for centuries until the late Qing dynasty in the 1800's. Japan nearly dominated the whole Asia during World War II and committed extremely cruel and inhumane crimes against its neighbors. Until the Korean War, I can bet you that most of the world's respond to "Do you know where Korea is" would be "WTF?"
So to most of the world, especially the West, Korea has an advantage because it is not well-known so it can have a "fresh start". But of course, Korea's neighbors, namely China and Japan, knows all about Korea's past...
ellatur: What's the matter? Can't handle reality? Yes, go and shout "Korean pride" three times to yourself and you'll feel better.

realms September 3rd, 2004, 03:18 AM Though I'm not Korean, I definitely know that Samsung and Hyundai are one of the major Korean Brands. lol. Even though Finland is not a major country in Europe, everyone knows that Nokia is Finnish. Commoners know that Samsung and Hyundai is the 'symbol' fo Korea. We're not that dumb. :)

realms September 3rd, 2004, 03:27 AM And of course, China and Japan are well known than Korea in the outside world. But to tell the truth, I know famous brands like 'Sony'(One of my favorites!) or 'Sanyo' along with Korean brands like 'Samsung electronics" or 'LG' but seriously never heard of any Chinese brands especially at the eletronics part. But since China is growing at top speed, mayhaps one day they'll get their own brand.

Talking about "Pot calling kettle black"...:D:D
Ask anyone in the world, what "Taiwan is" or where it's located. 99% of the people won't be able to respond because they have never heard of this country in their life. Taiwan is politically, culturally and economically non-existent to the world. IT'S A FACT. You see, the sad thing is, Taiwan is not even recognized as a country to most people. ( Although I hope they become an independent country..)
I agree that China and Japan are better known than Korea to the world. China for being the most populous nation in the world along with India, and Japan for being the second largest economy in the world, they have all the reason to promote their names to the world.
But Korea is not far behind. They are the third largest economy in Asia. Not only do they have Samsung or Hyundai in their list, Korea is ranked 6th in the world in terms of having global companies in Forbes International 500. ( http://www.forbes.com/2003/07/02/internationaland.html ).
They have as much influence in Asia, as France have in Europe with their economical dominance and political influence. Ever heard of ASEAN + 3 ( 3 being Korea, Japan and China )? Or what about APEC? Or what about other organisations such as FIFA, IOC, UN and WHO? FIFA vice president is from Korea. Former IOC vice president was from Korea. The secretary general of WHO is Korean...the list goes on..
Heck, even Taekwondo is practiced by 50 million people world-wide. ( http://www.athens2004.com/en/Taekwondo ) That's 1/12th of the world population for ya. Or what else? There are 5 million Koreans living abroad. Btw, have you seen "an unknown country" host both the World Cup and Olympic games before? :D..Damn, there are so many things to talk about Korea while there are so less things to talk about your tiny little country, Taiwan.
Yes, Korea was unknown before the 1950's era. But now, the world has changed and so has Korea.
I see some Taiwanese making stupid comments about Korea out of pure jealousy. Before you make such comments, I would suggest you stop watching Korean dramas, stop playing Korean games, stop copying Korean high-technologies without paying any royalty and stop idolizing Korean actors/actresses. Then we will listen to you.
Pangu September 3rd, 2004, 04:00 AM Hahahaha, this "Korean pride" cracks me up. Go ahead, talk all the smack you want. Afterwards, why don't you Koreans get together and chant "Korean Pride" around a camp fire. Hahaha.
Here is another reason why there aren't many anti-Korean sentiments.
When Korea, namely South Korea, showed up on the International scene (around 1960's or 70's), South Korea was a U.S. "ally" (lapdog). Therefore, as a reward for being a U.S. "ally", South Korea was backed by the world's most powerful and influencial nation.
Just look at pre-WW2 Japan and post-WW2 Japan. Heck, Disney made cartoons making fun of "Japs". Look at how Japan is preceived in the U.S. now that it's an U.S. "ally".

Aside from me laughing at the over-nationalistic Koreans, please feel free to rebut any of the arguements I made regarding South Korea's status after the Korean War.

LOL. At least Koreans have things to show up their "pride". Taiwanese don't even have one.

Oh Man. This guy is really fun to play with. :D
Now, you're partly acknowledging the status of Korea on the international scene by saying like that? Oh..I see. Now that you think you're driven to the corner, you've changed your whole opinion and now you're trying to create reason why Korea was becoming well-known after the 1970's. Hello? I think it's better off you just stick with your "Korea is not well known to the world" comment...hehe
Pangu September 3rd, 2004, 04:19 AM I have yet to see a single Korean provide a mature and logical discussion. All I have seen are Koreans like plasma169 and Ellatur resort to personal attacks and baseless accusations.
Is this how you Koreans want to portray yourselves?
ebck120 September 3rd, 2004, 04:28 AM from what i see both of you are acting childish, making ridiculous comments on who can say what or who can do what, go on and enjoy yourselves, wont accomplish much, you guys will just see each other again in another thread

Hey, pal. You must be an idiot to expect mature discussion after you made such a biased/stupid comment in the first place. And your tone in your posts doesn't sound good, either. But, you expect a welcoming post from the Koreans? :sleepy: God, you're too ignorant to even talk to.

You remind me of "Inspire" at SSP. Any chance you're him?
Sorry ebck120 for messing things up! Point taken. :)
thyrdrail September 3rd, 2004, 05:35 AM Ok, I have to jump in.
First of all, you guys are getting too personal and just talking stupid and throwing childish insults.
I disagree with you plasma169 that "99%" of people havent' heard of Taiwan or don't know where it is. If that's the response you're getting from the people you've been asking, then I suggest that you start associating yourself with some intellectual friends who know a thing or two about geography, technology and current events. If they ever went to high school let alone college, I'm assuming that they took world history or Asian history in which Taiwan and its history with China was covered. And who doesn't own a desktop computer or laptop, LCD panel, DVD player, semiconductor, cell phone, PDA or other hi-tech gadget not Made in Taiwan? All they have to do is look at the back of their hard drive or whatever product they own. Taiwan has tremendous influence in the global hi-tech industries.
(By the way, did you know that Taiwanese now have 2 satellites floating around in space that they built themselves? But of course with western technical assistance, but what Asian country didn't get technical assistance?)
Regarding pop culture, yea so Korean pop culture is popular in Taiwan. (Tho I personally don't know why since most of the Korean dramas and music seem incredibly cheesey to me and just copycats of American and Japanese pop culture. But then after looking at what Taiwan media has to offer, I guess I can understand Taiwanese' interest in Korean entertainment. ) You should be proud. Don't gloat - that makes people anti-Korean. But I'm sure you've heard of Ang Lee and seen his films. You know, that famous TAIWANESE director of such films as Eat Drink Man Woman, The Wedding Bangquet, The Hulk, and of course that tiny little film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, only the biggest moneymaking Asian film in American history. I don't know how much money it made globally, but it probably topped that ranking too.
I'll talk about the anti-Korean subject since that's what this thread is about. And I don't have any personal biases against Koreans, and I have Korean friends, both FOBs and non-FOBs. And my bro dated Korean girls who were nice and my cousin's married to one, so again I'm not being anti-Korean. Just speaking my mind and being sincere, ok? But I have heard of people not liking Koreans, both in NYC and Los Angeles, 2 cities that I've lived in. I've just heard from people that they thought Koreans were cold and unfriendly and they only associate with other Koreans and speak in Korean all the time. Even many of the Korean-Americans just hang among themselves. In L.A., Koreans are up there with Armenians, another group who aren't very well-liked. You know what's funny? Many Korean-Americans don't like foreign Koreans. I've never heard of Chinese-Americans not liking Chinese foreigners or Taiwanese-Americans not liking Taiwanese-foreigners. But after hanging out with many Koreans, I guess I can see the differences in native and non-native culture and understand the reasons.
plasma169 September 3rd, 2004, 06:02 AM I'll talk about the anti-Korean subject since that's what this thread is about. And I don't have any personal biases against Koreans
As the eminent philosopher Kant, Immanuel once saide in "The Critique of Pure Reason",
"Hatred stems from jealousy".
That's all I have to say about the subject.
thyrdrail September 3rd, 2004, 06:08 AM Maybe you should look at the reasons people are touting, instead of incessantly repeating the "jealousy" excuse. It's such a copout reason.
mookiecece September 3rd, 2004, 06:20 AM No need for all this crap. thread closed
