Niger Delta struggle
The Niger Delta is the worlds third biggest Delta with massive oil reserves...after the peacful protests of Ken Saro Wiwa a new movement began - more violent and a frustrated one that fought both the oil companies and Nigeria for the damages to their environment and allocation of Deltas resources.

A parting gift from our former colonial 'fathers':
NIGERIA’S OLD NATIONAL ANTHEM [Adopted 1960]
Nigeria, We Hail Thee!

This anthem was adopted as our official national anthem until 1978 from October 1, 1960 when Nigeria obtained its independence from Great Britain. Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate that lived in Nigeria at the time, wrote the words and the music was composed by Frances Berda.

Nigeria we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribe and tongue may differ
In brotherhood we stand
Nigerians all and proud to serve
Our sovereign motherland

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle honour
And this we count as gain
To pass unto our children
A banner without stain

O God of all creation
Grant this our one request
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed

Mr Thomopulus, a popular Greek rubber buyer based in Benin City and Sapele in the '20s. He created lots of job opportunities at the time, including rubber tappers, buyers, processors and exporters. He was then the sole financier of that industry. His Rubber factory, Spiropolus, is still in Ugbeyiyi in Sapele.

Nollywood - Nigerian cinema....lol is the first word that comes to mind when I quietly think and cringe of this production. Albeit my ever curious mind dug up the history behind this second biggest industry in the world.

If anybody ever doubted the ingenuity of the Igbos then quickly direct them to Nollywood. After the Biafra war the Biafrans or Igbos were ostracised despite Nigeria wanting them to stay in the forced union. Well if the jobs are not coming your way you might as well create them...thus one of the first Nollywood movie was produced with a digital recorder and a very low budget. Today there is some improvement thankfully to the movies and there appears to be a growing participation of cast from both the West and the North of Nigeria.

Genevieve Nnaji - the biggest star in Nollywood

EDNA PARK, MISS NIGERIA AT THE MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT (MIAMI, 1964)
Twenty-year-old Edna Park was the first Miss Nigeria to represent her country in the Miss Universe pageant, and she impressed all in attendance with her regal bearing and unflappable confidence.

And here she is again :)
EDNA PARK, MISS NIGERIA AT THE MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT (MIAMI, 1964)
One of the questions on the forms for the contestant biographies required the contestants to state what they hoped to gain from their participation in the competition. Most of them replied with typically insincere, faux-inspirational pageantry cliches like "To represent my country," "To make friends" and "To travel." Edna Park however, stated in no uncertain terms, " To win the crown."

EDNA PARK, MISS NIGERIA AT THE MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT (MIAMI, 1964)
When the names of the finalists were announced, Edna Park was not among them. Ms. Park immediately collapsed in tears and had to be carried off the stage. When she failed to stop crying after two hours, she was administered sedatives by a physician and admitted to the hospital for overnight observation before eventually returning to Nigeria. To her dismay, she found that the incident had earned her much ridicule in the Nigerian press.

Westerners actually make their own movies in the Yoruba Language, and not in English. That movie poster u have up there ''The Figurine Araromire'' is actually one of these..

Kannywood - the Northern(Kano) version of er.......let's say Bollywood;) It took a while for the more open South to start employing intimacy and affection in their movies and it will obviously take the more conservative North much much longer probably never:dunno:

As an ommision of love scenes the North has gone the traditional Bollywood route and employed music to highlight their romance lol. The story also differes from Southern plots lol there are no jujus mostly issue of marriage and family and such...not too controversial. The movies are normally conveyed in Hausa.

And guess what Happened after ,:

EDNA PARK, MISS NIGERIA AT THE MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT (MIAMI, 1964)
When the names of the finalists were announced, Edna Park was not among them. Ms. Park immediately collapsed in tears and had to be carried off the stage. When she failed to stop crying after two hours, she was administered sedatives by a physician and admitted to the hospital for overnight observation before eventually returning to Nigeria. To her dismay, she found that the incident had earned her much ridicule in the Nigerian press.
