View Full Version : Best Historical Skyline of Eastern Europe: Part 1

Ok, I want to create a series of interactive activities here on the Eastern European forum.

For the second activity, I want you to suggest the best Historical Skyline of Eastern Europe, and then, we can vote on the top suggestions (in another thread, which I will create as we receive enough suggestions).

Pictures are also a great way to support your suggestion. Please only post general skyline pictures, not ones of individual skyscrapers. Also, a few good ones should be sufficient for people to decide, so don't post 100's of pictures.

Let's start.

Thanks. ;)
I haven't seen the skyline photos for a few of those cities, so it would be nice if you posted a FEW pics. Also, remember that eventhough a city might have nice historical buildings, it's the SKYLINE which matters - how the city center looks from the side.

There are so many beautifull historic skylines that it's almost impossible to choose one, which is the best.

We'll try ... this is what this thread is for. Give all of your suggestions !!!

The taller, the bigger - the better. As I said before, a city may have nice buildings, but if they're all the same hight, etc ... that doesn't make nice skyline.

Thanx John :)

But for sure Vilnius has one of the most beautifull historic skylines - red roofs of the houses makes it a bit similar to Prague

Don't worry - Wroclaw is not as known in world as Warsaw, Krakow or Gdansk.

However now it's becoming hot spot for turism and business in Poland. There are more and more articles about Wroclaw in foreighn press and the number of turists is very rapidly increasing.

For me Wroclaw is one of the most beautifull cities in Poland and it's historic skyline in quite amazing

Some more from Riga. Riga is flat - but there is waterfront - the large Daugava river. Steep, very high churchtowers, characteristic for Hanseatic towns, create unique skyline. Three churches are very high - 123m, 90m, 86m.

Ok, I found a few shots of Vilnius old town skyline in my archives, but it's not that easy to find quality historic skyline shots of Vilnius since the land relief is very different and from most angles it's impossible to see the "skyline" as such even though there are really many nice church spires, I'll try to find more later (maybe even take a few today ;))

I'd like people to comment on Szczecin. I'm not sure that everyone will consider 2 buildings a "skyline".

BTW, I updated the list with Torun, it looks nice. But anymore pics ?

How many options does a forum-poll allow to make? Because I believe it's not unlimited and we ought to start limiting submissions.

Stan ... the max is 15 options, so we're right on the mark right now! If we go over, we must choose which ones to keep in.

Szczecin has a big skyline, probably one of the best in Central Europe, in the Baltics for sure. Problem is that there are no good photos showing the city's skyline from a proper angle.

Mass concentration of tall buildings is clearly visible in NW corner of this photo. Very sizeable downtown.

I see the concentration of buildings, but most of them look like commieblocks, or semi-modern buildings. This topic is about historical skylines.

I have nothing against adding this city, it's just that when we do the poll, what pictures are you going to provide for the people to consider? They won't vote on a city that they can't see.

Wilnus is very beautiful :)

I know many stories from Soviet Union times when Ukrainians would go to Wilnus and Tallin rathen than to Moscow, because felt that we had more in common, being occupied by.. soviets.

Ok, that was really off-topic :) Sorry

I really should post some pictures of Ljubljana, even though a poll is very unlikely at this stage.. :D

there will be more of them in that place in future :)

another nice shot of Vilnius' historical skyline
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/3418/124mb1.jpg

now smth interesting: in this (http://img.miestai.net/200604/DSC_0810.JPG) picture by Mantaz, in the background, just left from Helios tower you can see a highrise with big antenna on top, that highrise was built by soviets on ruins of not finished Jėzaus širdies bažnyčia (church of heart of Jesus), designed by Antanas Vivulskis (Anton Wiwulski), church originaly should'v been way over 100 meters (Helios is ~100 meters), standing in Naujamiestis district, in that exact place it would'v dominated Vilnius' skyline. Last year, some rumours and proposals to rebuild it apeard, our mayor was the first one to propose to rebuild it, archbishop of Vilnius was against it, since there are already 40+ churches in Oldtown and NewTown, architects and some people support the idea of rebuilding, though most of the citizens aren't aware that there even was a church like this, i do think though that most of them (if they knew) would support the project. Myself, I really hope that this church will be rebuilt as soon as possible.

(notice the huge statue of Jesus, should be smth like 60 meter tall)
