Egypt: Army Tried To Kill VP - Journalist
February 10, 2011
Officers in the Egyptian army tried to kill Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman, sources near the Egyptian presidency told journalist Ahmad Abd-al-Alim, Al Jazeera reported Feb. 10. Officers in civilian clothing hidden in trees were behind the assassination attempt, denied by Suleiman, in which two of Suleiman’s guards died, Abd-al-Alim said. He also said major differences existed between the command of the armed forces and that of the intelligence services, adding that either Egyptian Defense Minister Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi or the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman could come to power.

I think a lot of persons were premature in celebrating MHM resigning. I told you before this brutal regime is very MANIPULATIVE, SELFISH and ARROGANT. The MHM regime will manipulate everything just to hangon to power and use all non-ethical methods to destroy the democracy revolution. Now all the offical regime media is claiming wael ghoniem told the demonstrators to go home (which is a lie) and there are thousands of fake "maba7eth amn dawlah" acounts on facebook creating confusion and havoc right now to destroy the democracy revolution from within. They are copying an d pastingthe same statements using diffrent accounts attacking the democracy revolution so it appears as if the majority of egyptians are against democracy and want MHM regime to remain forever in power.

Things are getting very critical now and I'm afraid the country is on the verge of a disaster. American warships are approaching Suez canal, Unknowen group is firing rpg on police in Rafah, thousands of prisoners are free including members of Al Qaeda and other extremist groups. Protests should stop NOW. Mubarak has done the right thing by transferring his power to Omar Suleiman. If he steps down now the Constitution cannot be changed before the presidential elections and all the gains made will be lost, the other scenario is the army talking over the country.

Palestinians in Gaza feed Egyptian troops
Mohammed Omer, The Electronic Intifada, 10 February 2011

An Egyptian soldier at the border with Gaza. (Hatem Omar/MaanImages)

RAFAH, occupied Gaza Strip (IPS) - Mustapha Suleiman, 27, from J Block east of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, crosses through gaps in the iron fence on the border carrying bread, water, cans of meat and a handful of vegetables for Egyptian soldiers stationed on the other side.

"Whatever you offer on Saturday you will receive on Sunday," Suleiman says. "I am ready to help with what I have, for all the work they do."

Egyptian troops have run short of essential supplies, caught up in clashes involving Bedouin groups. Serious clashes have erupted between riot police and Bedouin groups over the past two weeks.

Supplies sent for Egyptian troops have not got through to them. The troops have appealed to people living in al-Arish town on the Egyptian side for help. And for troops on the Gaza border, help has come from Palestinians in Gaza -- themselves on small rations as a result of the Israeli blockade.

"We heard the Egyptian soldiers calling out to us, saying they had run out of food," a policeman in Gaza told IPS. Gazans are now "sharing their limited food with Egyptian soldiers."

Many individuals can be seen crossing the Philadelphi Corridor that separates Egypt from the Gaza Strip, carrying food and essential supplies. They find enough gaps in the fence and wall built before the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005.

Some of the supplies being offered to Egyptian troops have earlier come in from the Egyptian side to Gaza through the underground tunnels. "We overcome our Gazan hurdles under the ground, and when Egyptians need us we will overcome their hurdles above the ground," Wael al-Nasri, who owns a tunnel, tells IPS.

Most tunnels have a shared ownership between Egyptian and Palestinian partners. The tunnels are now beginning to see a movement in the opposite direction. Al-Nasri says he recently sent bags of flour back to his partner on the Egyptian side. In the face of clashes, it isn't just the Egyptian army that is running short of food.

"They have always been there for us these past five years during the Israeli siege of Gaza," says al-Nasri. "They help us to stand tall, so we help them."

Al-Nasri picked up the bags from a shop owned by Mohammed Qishta, to whom he had sold them earlier. Qishta parted with them readily. He has relatives on the Egyptian side, and says there is a scarcity on that side because of "new road blocks set up by violent thugs and armed groups." Many other dealers are sending goods back to Egypt through the tunnels, he says.

The Palestinian government in Gaza is trying to restrict the outflow of essential goods such as flour and oil, says Qishta. If the flow of Egyptian goods through Sinai on the other side of Gaza comes to a halt, Gaza itself will be hit.

Some tunnel traders are reporting a surge in the demand for light weapons in the face of the worsening security situation on the Egyptian side. Few are prepared to talk about this openly. But this has continued in the past, and many cases have been reported of Egyptian authorities confiscating arms being smuggled through these tunnels.

There seems no indication at present of light weapons being sent to the Egyptian side. But the market price for some weapons is said to have risen. "A Kalashnikov used to cost 400-500 Jordanian dinars ($560-$700) before the unrest," says al-Nasri. "The price has now doubled. In the lack of security many families who trade through tunnels on the Egyptian side need extra weapons.

Clashes are meanwhile continuing. Firing is heard every now and then in the Sinai area. There have been reports of heavy bombing as well, and of an attempt to blow up a gas pipeline that supplies Israel. There is little detail because media are unable to reach most of Sinai area from Cairo to the west, or from Gaza in the east.

First, I think we can all agree: Mubarak is finished.

But, I still do not understand why he has not stepped down. All of sudden, people care about the constitution. Since when did Mubarak ever respect it? Why is he using it to protect himself now?

The constitution itself is illegitmate.

The solution is very simple actually: Mubarak transfers power to the army and steps down. The army safeguards the demands of the population: dissolves parliament, form a completely new constiution and a national unity government.

As long as the army is in charge, and has power, there is nothing to worry about. Egypt will remain protected from external threats. Mubarak must understand that HE is the solution, HE will protect Egypt if he steps down, not make concessions every few days.

Unless you are not Egyptian

1.Mubarak and his henchmen should stand down

2.Caretaker Govt should be installed

3.NEW Constitutional review team should be formed

4. A new constitution should be written

5. Call elections

6. Mubarak and his henchmen should be tried and answer charges of abuse of power and corruption

7. New Egyptian Govt should demand the return of stolen money...if thats impossible they should just confiscate Mubaraka and his henchmen all the properties and assets

8. I'm not Egyptian but I strongly support my Egyptian brothers in this and I believe they deserve freedom and liberty like the ones I enjoy and i really HATE it when Mubarak and his supporters tell the world that WITHOUT MUBARAK Egypt will turn into chaos! This is a country of over 80 million plus who for centuries have looked after themselves and its beggars belief when people come here and tell us that Egyptians need to be babyfed and sit by an 80 yr old dictator who has violated Egyptians dignity for his personal gain

Mubarak resigns as president & hands power to army
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down and the vice president has named a military council to run the country's affairs, state television said on Friday after 18 days of mass protests against his rule.

Al Arabiya TV reported that the higher military council will sack the cabinet, suspend both houses of parliament and rule with the head of the supreme constitutional court.

The army statement was expected to be delivered later on Friday and followed President Hosni Mubarak's dramatic resignation after 30 years in power.

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptian protesters waved flags, cried, cheered and embraced in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday, shouting "God is Great" when the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak was announced.
President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the post of president of the republic
Vice President Omar Suleiman

Former U.N. nuclear chief Mohamed ElBaradei said, "This is the greatest day of my life. The country has been liberated."

A grim-faced and ashen Vice President Omar Suleiman announced the handover on state television after an extraordinary national outpouring of rage brought more than a million furious demonstrators onto the streets.

"Taking into consideration the difficult circumstances the country is going through, President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the post of president of the republic and has tasked the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to manage the state's affairs," Suleiman said.

Earlier, the 82-year-old strongman had flown out of Cairo to his holiday retreat at Sharm el-Sheikh on the Red Sea, his ruling party said.

As news spread cries of "Allahu Akbar" -- God is greatest! -- and howls of victory rang out in the streets of the capital and firecrackers exploded.

In Tahrir Square several protesters fainted with the emotion of the moment following two weeks of protest.

The plaza has become a focal point of the revolt since it was occupied by protesters in late January, and earlier in the day had been thronged by hundreds of thousands of Egyptians, who prayed and chanted abuse at Mubarak.

"People here don't care if he's in the palace or not. We want him to quit the presidency," said 40-year-old Mohammed Hamdan, who works for an oil firm, as he joined the protest outside Mubarak's palace in the Cairo suburbs.

"He has to leave the country, our demands are clear, we want the entire NDP to be dissolved and to get out because they have destroyed the country," said Magdi Sabri, a smartly dressed middle-aged man outside state television.
Passionate officers

In a show of solidarity in at least lower levels of the army, three Egyptian officers shed their weapons and uniforms and joined the protesters.

An impassioned preacher addressed the military in his sermon, exhorting them to "act in a way that will be acceptable to God on judgement day," shortly before fainting and being carried away through the crowd.

On Thursday night, hundreds of thousands had crowded into Tahrir Square to hear a speech that was widely expected to be Mubarak's last as president.

Instead, he delegated some of his powers to his ally and Egypt's former intelligence supremo, Omar Suleiman, while vowing he would stay in office until September and one day die in Egypt, ruling out a flight into exile.

Mubarak had also been on a collision course with the international community, and in particular Egypt's key ally and donor, Washington.

In his speech on Thursday, he took a swipe at the United States and other countries that want a faster transition to democracy in the Arab world's most populous nation, vowing: "I have never bent to foreign diktats."

American President Barack Obama reacted with a flash of anger of his own, saying Mubarak had failed to map out "meaningful or sufficient" change, or to speak clearly enough to Egypt and the world.

I was in class when the news came out. I read it on Twitter from my phone.

I jumped up in the middle of class while my teacher was presenting something. And I shouted "It's over, It's all over! Mubarak is done!" Then the class, and all my friends started clapping and cheering with me, so did the teacher.

We opened the Al Jazeera live stream and watched the celebrations. I started crying and crying, my face was soaked. And all my friends were hugging me and we were all celebrating.

In just 18 days, we the Egyptian people have brought down a a dictatorship of 30 years. We have done the impossible.

It was only with the absolute bravery, determination, perseverance and ultimate sacrifice of the Egyptian people that we achieved this.

And now, we can go to bed tonight knowing that freedom is around the corner, and that our nation with it's historic past, can now look towards a future brighter than ever. An Egypt that is united, an Egypt that is strong, and free.

Today is my 17th Birthday, and I could not have asked for a better Birthday present than this. I am speechless, astounded and overwhelmed in the heart. This alone is enough to cover every birthday I will have for the rest of my life. Mubarak leaving, and a Free Egypt is what I lived for. I do not need any birthday present again ever. This is enough for a lifetime. I can die happy now.

I've never been prouder to be Egyptian, I can't wait to shape our country we want to see, in a free and democratic environment. I can't wait to be involved and have a say in our nations affairs. And to be able to serve this nation, and its great people.

Now Egyptians can dream as big as we want to, dream in Red White and Black.

LOL, no right to claim any refund. It was thriller, but from that distance more like movie than real life...

OK, but seriously, it was just first step (OK, the most risky one and maybe the hardest for the moment, but still just first one). Now you will have to:
1. change the constitution (do you need a new parliamentary elections to have a Constituent for that?)
2. to do a presidential election
3. to move from military rules to the civic ones
4. to rebuilt your country by working, working, working... (<--- the hardest steps to do ;) )

BTW, I see Amr Moussa is already preparing for the presidential campaign ;)

Oh yes, and sue the bastard Pharaoh MHM for the whole money he has stolen from your people and for all the murders he was responsible for during the last 30 years of his dictatorship (and watch carefully all the sneaky politicians who will try to jump back to the thievish business) :bash:

Congrats guys from snowy Poland! :banana2:

I'd choose one week free stay in some Egyptian spa/tourist city http://www.acrossthesalt.com/phpBB3/images/smilies/smiley_freezing.gif

Oh yes, and sue the bastard Pharaoh MHM for the whole money he has stolen from your people and for all the murders he was responsible for during the last 30 years of his dictatorship (and watch carefully all the sneaky politicians who will try to jump back to the thievish business) :bash:

... but for the time being ...

All the singers from "Mobutu's court" were loved by the Congolese even after he got overthrown. People will forgive him easily if he will admit he was wrong ;)
