Did you know that......
Sokotocaliphate January 24th, 2011, 11:12 PM The Portugese in Nigeria
Some Nigerians may be aware that the first European arrivals to the Southern region (Lagos, Benin and Niger Delta) were Portugese thus the first settlers to come into that enclave known today as (Southern) Nigeria were Portugese. 'Lagos' was christened by the Portugese which means lakes or lagoons, the original name was 'Eko' a Yoruba word as Lagos is situated in Yorubaland.
Map of Southern Nigeria
http://bp0.blogger.com/_feyyqJjam_I/Rn7CF5tVulI/AAAAAAAAAjg/re9wJNaINXI/s400/Southern+Nigeria+Zh+En.png
Now I'm assuming that quite a few Nigerians already know of this but how many knew that the first European language spoken by many Nigerians was not English but Portugese. The citizens of the Benin Kingdom was even educated in portugese and some of them volunatrily accepted Christ.
Map of Benin Empire
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DeabNDTNx68/TGSaQbXZ02I/AAAAAAAABCo/gTw5IVyJopg/s1600/Benin_Empire_sphere_of_influence.PNG
The Portugese have thus left an imprint in Nigeria particularly the South. Even though the superstrate of the pidgin we speak is constructed from english, there were many portugese words that got filtered in. 'Saber' in portugese means to know, sabi became a corruption of saber and can be found in the pidgin vocabularly. There are also some dutch words - another settler that arrived in Nigeria later than the Portugese but before the British.
The slave trade in Nigeria between the locals and the Europeans was birthed by the Portugese. The Portugese introduced the gun in Nigeria. The portugese were the ones who even referred to the Ubini Empire as the Benin Empire.
Another interesting fact is that when the descendants of emancipated slaves from Brazil decided to settle back in Lagos - they transported some portugese into the pidgin vernacular, they also introduced the carnival lifestyle to Nigerians and there are still some Brazilian architecture that can be found in Lagos. Some of them brought Christ with them. The Brazilians or Saros or Nagos that returned to Nigeria evetually blended in and thus some Nigerians retain portugese names such as Da Silva - these very same Nigerians could very well be the descendants of these returnee Brazilians

Sokotocaliphate January 24th, 2011, 11:25 PM The North of Nigeria particularly Kano was a centre of learning in it's prime. In fact the only city states in sub-Saharan Africa to feature on the 14th century world map were Timbuktu and Kano. Despite the poor education statistics of the North today in the past they were very educated - in Arabic. Some of them are still learned in this language in fact Arabic is spoken in various parts in Northern Nigeria and this is excluding the Shuwa arabs.
The Hausa are an afro-asiatic group whose language draws some parallels with Arabic yet there are some loan words from Arabic found in the Hausa diction. When the Fulanis conquered the Hausas the bizarre thing is that the conquerors decided to employ the language of the vanquished. Hence today many Fulanis particulary in Sokoto speak Hausa as a first Language whereas there are some that only speak Hausa. Out of all the West African Countries to house the Fulanis the Nigerian Fulanis are less likely to speak their own tongue. However The Fulanis in Adamawa state continue to speak their language as opposed to the Sokoto ones. In fact one of the major languages if not the main language of Adamawa state is Fulfulde.
If there is a dialect that unites the various languages of Nigeria then that award goes to the vernacular, pidgin english. The words borrow from so many Nigerian languages which has domesiticated the english language and manipulated it into our West African syntax.
Many non-muslims Nigerians will proclaim 'wallahi talahi' adopting the frequent squall of the Muslims or Hausas.
Many non-Hausas will exclaim 'Kai!' or 'Haba'.
When non-Yorubas are adressing eachother the word 'omo' or 'oga' is commonly used abi?;)
The non-Igbos will join the Igbos in shouting 'chineke me!' and so on and so forth
The various languages have converged with english as its glue with a few other European languages.
Arinze January 24th, 2011, 11:28 PM Interesting stuff :D
There are Chinese Names for the states lol?
Sokotocaliphate January 24th, 2011, 11:31 PM Nigeria along with Cameroon has probably the most language grouping in the continent and I believe there are a few languages that cannot be grouped. It is in the Nigeria/Cameroon region that the majority of African languages is spoken. Some have sadly compared us to the biblical tower of Babel. Some say that Africa has over 2000 languages with a quarter of them spoken in Nigeria. Evi Edna Ogholi famously sang, 'every kilometer another language' to describe the diversity and multiplicity of languages in Nigeria. My mother used to tell me that sitting along with some people you could hear ten people chorus their individual languages, it was just a symphony of afro-asiatic notes, kwa idioms and Nilo-saharan proverbs:)
The languages groupings that have been clarified by liguists are the following (I will be using but one language as an example of each grouping):
Nilo-Saharan - Kanuri
Kwa (which makes up the majority) - Yoruba
Afro-asiatic (the second majority) - Hausa
Bantu - Ejagham
Bedoiun - Shuwa arabs
Berber - Tuareg
Ijoid - Izon
Creole - Nigerian pidgin english
Thanks for the info GOETIA - did you read it yourself?

No that's the only map I could find at the time which leads me to another interesting fact:
The former name of Tokyo was Edo:D
The Igbo philosphy behind 'Chi' is actually quite identical to that of the Chinese philosphy behind their own 'Chi':)

2-How would u know whether I went by the name or not?
Taiwo and Kehinde are names generically used for twins, male or female, regardless of the official names.
I think Taiwo is the second-born. Taiwo (tasted the world) actually peeks out first then withdraws to allow Kehinde (arrived second/behind) through. So Taiwo tastes the earth first, but Kehinde is actually born first. I guess that's God's way of resolving the "I'm older than you" arguments in future. Both sides could win depending on how well they argue..

Did you know that the drill monkey is only found in the Nigeria/Cameroon border
A sad fact: Did you know that after war torn Iraq, Niger Delta is the most dangerous and volatile oil producing region:(
Did you know that the amount of energy wasted due to gas flaring in Nigeria could have been used to supply the whole continent with constant electricty
Did you know that riot prone Jos could feed the whole of West Africa
Did you know that the smallest state in geographical size Lagos contains the bulk of our population....

Sokotocaliphate January 25th, 2011, 08:23 PM Did you know that the 3 main ethnic groups in Nigeria make over 60% of the population
So that means approxiamtely 50 million people hail from over 300 ethnic groups.
I wonder if Lugard was aware that he was grouping the 3 most populous ethnic groups in Africa or if it was mere coincidence. It also makes me wonder how these 3 main ethnic groups were living equidistant from eachother before colonialism
So that means groups in Nigeria with a populatin of say...250 000 are automatically placed in the most populous country in Africa.
Did you know that just over a year ago a new ethnic group was discovered by missionaries - they are called 'Jebu'. I'm suprised that they are still discovering ethnic groups in a country such as Nigeria - how could these people not have heard all the comotion that has been occuring in Nigeria all this while lol.
The last ethnic group discoverd in Nigeria was in the mid 1980s called the 'Koma' - I wonder if there are still undiscovered people out there hmmmm.....http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/simpsons/homer-thinking.gif

150million people, and some foreigners are discovering groups. I figure some university's research department, a government ministry, or at least local missionaries or even nomadic people should have closed the discovery books decades ago. Plus, those satellite guys should already know what's on every meter of our soil..
These 'Jebu' folks.. did they have mobile phones? It's hard to imagine completely primitive people in Nigeria. It's even harder to believe ignorant missionaries. If they're as hardcore as they paint themselves (discovering primitive tribes and all), shouldn't they be taking the goodnews to sharia-ridden cities instead?

Lagos to the West was the second and to date served as the longest capital city in our history
Abuja towards the North or let's just say in the centre - the most recent capital and still at its infancy
However Lagos remains the economic capital of the country
Did you guys hear the reason why the capital was moved from Lagos to Abuja?
Well apparently Murtala Muhammed (the ruler of Nigeria at the time) claimed that 'a capital city must be in the centre of the country'

Dude, there's actually a multi-volume report of the committee set up to consider the continued suitability of Lagos as federal capital and/or the desirability of relocation (that was headed by a highly-respected Nigerian judge, Akinola Aguda, who was at one time the Chief Justice of Botswana, and included other respected Nigerians such as Dr. Tai Solarin), which perhaps you should bother to read at some point and minimize your public embarrassment. :ohno:

While I know very little about Nigerian languages generally, even I (who's lived in Nigeria for merely a few years) know that "Olu" refers to God or Lord, while "Ola" refers to wealth.
Btw, the name Taye Taiwo indicates the twin child of a twin.
JoblessBeggar January 31st, 2011, 01:56 PM Nigeria has the highest number of Internet users in Africa (43.9 million, with Egypt a distant second at 17 million, according to TIU 2010 stats).
Nigeria has by far the highest number of mobile phone subscribers in Africa at 104 million (GSM 92 million and CDMA 12 million) as of November 2010, but probably only about 80 million active subscribers.
Nigeria of course still remains Africa's largest producer and exporter of crude oil and condensates (seeing off a brief Angolan challenge), and the second-leading producer and exporter of LNG in Africa (behind Algeria).
Agriculturally, Nigeria is (1) the number one producer of cassava in the world, (2) the leading producer of yams in the world (Ghana is third, but the leading exporter), (3) the leading producer of sheanut in the world, (4) the second-leading producer of gum arabic in the world (after Sudan), (5) the third-largest exporter of ginger (after China and India), (7) the world's fifth-largest exporter of sesame seeds, (8) the leading producer of soya beans in Africa, (9) the second-leading producer of rice in Africa, after Egypt (but the leading importer in Africa), and (10) the third-largest producer of cocoa in Africa (and together with CIV and Ghana, reportedly account for about 70% of world exports).

but that's the thing Dennis, Asians are "often sterotyped", they not only endure pressures from their parents to perform but also from their piers who automatically believe every Chinese or Indians to be super smart based on the coordinates of their birth:nuts:

Håkønljzberg March 25th, 2011, 06:50 PM http://cdn.bellanaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/babatunde_olatunji2.jpg
Virtuoso percussionist Babatunde Olatunji was one of the most talented musicians to come out of Nigeria. His 1959 hit Jingo lo ba was covered by Carlos Santana. The very first single by the group Santana was a cover of the song. The Santana version was called Jingo and was a bit hit in the seventies. So strong was the relationship between Santana and Baba Olatunji that they toured together in the late nineties. Fatboy Slim recently incorporated Jingo lo ba into one of his songs. Baba worked with Quincy Jones, Cannonball Adderly and Stevie Wonder. Bob Dylan wrote a song called ‘I Shall Be Free’, and gave Baba a name check.
Baba toured with Martin Luther King during the civil rights era, performed at the United Nations and his drumming made the Soviet Premier (Nikita Kruschev) take off his shoes and dance.
Sokotocaliphate March 25th, 2011, 07:10 PM ^^ I became first aware of him when an Italian guy introduced me to his music. He lived in America yet his music was very much yoruba
