Barawa or Brava (Somali: Baraawe) is a port town on the south-eastern coast of Somalia. The traditional inhabitants are the Tunni Somalis and the Bravanese people, who speak Bravanese, a Swahili dialect. In the 16th century, Barawa, which was then part of the Ajuuraan Empire, was sacked by the Portuguese during the Battle of Barawa but quickly recovered from the attack. - Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barawa)

tanzan January 26th, 2011, 07:01 AM nice to see Barawa...many people in Tanzania claim to be Barawa and I always wondered were it was.
Constantine MMX January 26th, 2011, 08:12 AM Tanzan, I heard something similar, only that thousands of Tanzanians used to make pilgrimage to the tomb of the 19th century Somali scholar Uways Al-Barawi in Barawa, he enjoyed alot of support in 19th c. Tanzania.

Everything south of Mogadishu is basically just an extension of the Swahili coast, even down to the demographics and culture.

I wouldn't go as far as saying its simply an extension of the Swahili coast, but there's indeed a lot of overlap.
Ras Siyan June 23rd, 2011, 08:13 PM Barawe is a gem! Imagine the wonders some renovation work would do.

It's a hidden gem and one day once this war nonsense is over, it will be a diamond. :)
talya August 29th, 2012, 12:47 PM [QUOTE=Xusein;94599289]Barawa is one of Somalia's most underrated cities, you never hear much about it.
I don't know about that, before the civil war Barawa together with Marka and Kismaayo one of the top tourist attractions among the Somalians and the Italians, and it is also known for it is cuisine such as caano baraawe, muufo baraawe, icun, and many more.we may not heard much last 21 years about Barawa but is a well known and loved among the people.
Constantine MMX August 30th, 2012, 07:47 PM Somalia's many coastal cities will be the major centre pieces of a revived tourism industry, and country-branding because they have it all; history & heritage, stunning beaches and perfect waters for surfing, water-sports, scuba-diving, etc.
