Garowe (Somali: Garoowe‎) is the capital city of the Puntland administrative region of Somalia. It is located in the Nugaal region, and is the seat of the regional parliament, the presidential palace and government ministries. - Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garowe)

I definitely thought this city deserved its own topic. Very interesting. Went from a small local hub into a major player in Somalia. The Puntland administration has done a lot to put attention towards the city but its lack of prestige among other Somalis makes it an uncommon option for business and other economic opportunities. It is making gigantic progress and is probably my favorite city in the post-civil war Somalia.

^ Garowe is coming along well. In the construction section I added that they are paving roads and implementing sewer and city planning. I think their leader is really pushing to make it a fit and welcoming city for the interests of the West. A little spending on his part in exchange for much more from the int'l community is a good investment.

Its the capital of Puntland semi-autonomous region, they are trying to turn the town into a regional hub so int'l leaders will be impressed with the city and region in whole and switch the capital from Mogadishu to Garowe on the transitional federal platform. The city is being developed for political reasons. With the influx of government development came investors and businesses, now its on a steady rise as a result of these factors. It was virtually empty before the creation of Puntland autonomous state, then they started building government compounds and then came ministries, and the city began to open up as a commercial hub as well.

What's Garowe's weather like?

No doubt, the town looks great and respect to the architects in making it look great with limited resources.

If Garowe's population is roughly around 35,000, I don't think that would be urban enough or diverse enough to take Mogadishu's title as the capital. Sure, capitals don't have to be the most populated, but with a country like Somalia, I think it's in the interest of the nation to have a city by the sea ( I mean, you guys do have the best coastline in mainland Africa, why not use it?). Mogadishu also is an ancient city, and in its heyday was hands down one of the most beautiful African cities. I think rebuilding Mogadishu would be better.

What's Garowe's weather like?

It is relatively warm (30C) year-round, but very low humidity (inland location) and it is a breezy/windy place, making it feel cooler than it actually is. It has two rainy seasons, one between March-June and another one between August-October. Surrounding landscapes turn into grasslands in those months but quickly fade into dry steppes during the dry season.

If Garowe's population is roughly around 35,000, I don't think that would be urban enough or diverse enough to take Mogadishu's title as the capital.

That estimate must be from wikipedia, lol. It is more around ~75,000 probably going to 100k within the following years.

Before the 90s it used to be a much smaller village, mostly a nomadic trade center with fewer than ~2k permanent citizens. Much has changed since then, many locals who used to work in Mogadishu and other southern cities during the stable post-colonial years of Somalia (1960-1990) returned to Garowe after the Barre government collapsed in 1991. This together with it being declared the capital of the autonomous state of Puntland in 1998 increased the town's population tremendously. I don't know where Janub got the idea that it has aspirations to become Somalia new national capital. That's very unlikely, it will always be Mog or perhaps some other southern town in the riverine belt.

I didn't say it would become the national capital, only the headquarters of the transitional federal gov't. It is competing for the title, no one knows how likely it is that the city will receive it but it is high. Baidoa and Jowhar were once the seats of capital; and while Baidoa is suitable and accommodating, Jowhar was an empty city and was chosen for tribal reasons. If you have been paying attention to post-2009 Somali politics you would know that the int'l community is putting the spotlight further north of Mogadishu.

The TFG is ever-changing, and Farmaajo looks to be taking over soon. He has no beef with Puntland and would gladly place the transitional capital in that region. But if he is competent enough he might just take back the south.

I've never heard of this! Why would they burn the Eritrean flag? I don't think it's true. A lot of false stuff is reported in somali websites so you need to be careful. Also please stop pretending as if you came here to say "nice looking town" :ohno: All you wanted to mention was the Eritrean flag thing. SMH

If you must know I googled Garowe out of interest and stumbled upon an article from a Somali website that said that the Eritrean flag was burned because of the Eritrean-Djibouti "border dispute". I just wanted to see if anyone could confirm this and I asked so in a polite manner. If I didn't think it was a charming town then I wouldn't have typed it in a search engine.

Are you going to visit nearby places as well (Bosaso etc)? You should do a regional tour (including Somaliland). Traveling from one major city to another over there is fairly cheap (~$25 with those cabs).

From Garowe to Laascaanood or Burco by cab is possible, from here on you can travel to Hargeisa. By the way, the road distance from Garowe to Burco (~370 KM) is actually smaller than from Garowe to Bosaso (~450 KM).

That is the plan sxb, besides the major cities, I will also visit historic areas like various castle towns and the fortress-complex of Taleex. Those areas need proper photographic representation. Most images are a bit dated to say the least.

Maybe a few years later I'll venture to the Southern Cities, depending on the situation, and my own financial level, which hopefully will have increased significantly by then to start some projects. Insha-allah.

Garowe is very well planned and looks great. Nice city.

^The houses yes, but I think Garowe would look much better with a bit more natural landscaping. Five thousand+ trees planted, a few more parks, gardens etc.

Looks like a frontier Afghan town in these pics, like the ones you see in magazines.

Funny name.

I'm getting kind of bored of people building hotels, when's someone going to build a factory?

True.. but from what I gather both Garowe and Bosaso have seen an increased number of foreign visitors, so naturally a response to that would be more hotels.

IMO, all those small hotels give those cities a more modern look, so it's something positive.

:) I'm happy for any development and this is needed. Garowe is getting more important after all.
