Bosaso is also the largest city and economic capital of the Puntland state of Somalia.

Thanks, but its not the case for most Somali Djiboutians (u know we are about 50% of population). Most of them speak the language but don't read or write it. Most Djiboutians (Afars and Somalis) are not able to read or write their languages, that is because of the preponderance of the French language. When two Djiboutians are discussing, they usually mix the languages, and that is a threat to our national languages that will disappear if we continue like this. You see Djiboutian parents (especially young couples) talking in French with their kids and the kids not able to corretly speak the national languages let alone reading them. It is a problem on the long term that needs to be addressed.
There was a lot of debate about it and the decision was to introduce the teaching of both languages (Somali and Afar) in the public schools. I personally welcome that, because I don't want us to suffer from an identity loss.

OH, for the living standards increased over the last decade but more could be done. Djibouti has maintained an economic growth these last 10 years, attracted over a billions USD in foreign investment ect...but despite these achievements, poverty is still around. The results of the economic growth are not well distributed. It created a new class of rich and middle class people that benefited, but for the majority, nothing much has changed. Despite this economic boom, the unemployment rate is not decreasing, life is getting more expensive and the gap between rich and poor is widening. And there is also a lot of corruption, one of the big problems in Djibouti.

The real estate is booming, new luxurious neighborhoods with beach front villas complete with swimming pools are emerging, but also residential areas for the middle class, hotels are being built, office towers (though not higher than 6 floors, I don't why) ect...Yes, the sector is booming, but again, foreigners and the Djiboutian "bourgeoisie" are living there. The slums are still there and nothing much has changed for them.

For the proposed airport, nobody heard from it since then. I guess its one these fantastic new projects announced we haven't heard of since. Just like the bridge with Yemen and the new city by the Saudis, the touristic resort in Moucha Island (4 hotels and a casino) by the Chinese, the artificial island near the capital by the Qataris ect... There are so many projects announced never realized.

And yes, the UAE (Dubai) is the main investor in Djibouti. They invested in the old port, the new Doraleh port complex, the 5 star Kempinski Hotel, the 2 free zones and other projects. But several projects have been postponed since the economic crisis and Dubai's financial problems. Hope they'll continue, we're a poor country and we need investments.

Its already at peace and has been growing fast, with more development it will look great. The mayor of the city has already vowed to pave every street in Bosaso, so that is a positive sign.

If u look at the background of the picture, u can see a construction crane.
There is no crane in any city in Somalia of that kind right now. Therefore, i think that picture is either Tanzania (Zanzibar), or maybe Kenya.

^^Not convinced brother, plenty of major projects such as airports, oil surveys and real-estate projects employing similar heavy construction tools, so that's quite a bold statement. :)

Mogadishu University campus in Bosaso. If I recall correctly it has several branches in other Somali cities as well. That area looks pretty nice, only wished it was paved though.

Thanks for the update Xusein. :) The port needs to be further developed, although that would require very large sums of money only a strong national government could afford. For the time being, it is adequate.

The Bosaso municipality did purchase pavement equipment not too long ago to pave the runway and some of the main streets, but something must have slowed down the process..probably funding. I think they'll pave it sooner or later.

Boosaaso is a beautiful city. Personally I like how dense it is and the fact that even though it was built between 1991 and today (from being a tiny village in 1991 to a huge city today), it feels much older than that and strangely the architecture of the buildings work nicely together. I also like its narrow streets which give it an 'old feel' character. And of course the turquoise colour of the sea helps :D seaBeautiful city.
