lol, not at all comparable, one is capitalist and bustling, but a little dirty, another is communist and dead, but very clean

How dare you compare some capital of a puny unknown prefecture to the economic, cultural and political centre of the wealthiest, mightiest and most free nation on the planet?

Pyongyang look very empty here. But in other thread, Pyongyang look very good, orderly and well developed. Very surprising.

While Yanji is a small city compare with Pyongyang, but crowded.

Beijing vs Seoul

My first trip from one foreign country to another is interesting... Since I never really told my impressions of Seoul, I may as well do a comparison of it and Beijing. The first thing I notice in Beijing is that it is green! Seoul has trees too I guess, but they are few and get lost in the high rises.

The second thing I notice is I love Chinese fashion!!! It's actually how I expected Korean fashion to be for some reason. But Korea is over-the-top feminine, all pink and sparkles (and that's just the men!) and ruffles and bows. China is just straight over-the-top. Unfortunately I do not manage to capture any good examples of this on film.

After settling into our sweet hostel, we take the bus a couple stops to the Forbidden City, which I prefer to explain in pictures. After all that walking, we relax on the lawn in Tianenmen Square, where we are celebrities. It's funny - some people boldly ask for a picture with us, others boldly photograph us without asking, and others try to be sneaky and use us as a backdrop. In Seoul I rarely get a second glance, but it is a holiday weekend so some of these people might be from less diverse places than Beijing. For dinner we consume a ridiculous quantity of Chinese food, but I think I am enjoying the menu more than the food. I was pretty disappointed with the lack of quality Engrish in Seoul, but China is not as obsessed with importing English teachers as Korea and it shows.

The next day we leave at 5:30 a.m. for the Great Wall, and it is already getting crowded and hot by the time we get there. I know it's supposed to be amazing, but I didn't realize it would be so beautiful out here! From the Wall we head to the Ming Tombs, which requires going down I don't remember how many flights of stairs. Later we go to a gigantic shopping mall, and after dinner some semi-acapella karaoke spontaneously breaks out with a couple of Italians with a guitar. Ten points for Italian accents, but it's got nothin' on noraebang if there are no tambourines. Korea wins on this one.

I'm thinking the Forbidden City is cool until we enter the Summer Palace. It is breathtaking and keeps expanding the more we walk. I half expect some Chinese-looking Peter Pan to swoop down from a tree or something. I would say more, but it deserves poetry and I am a terrible poet.

The Temple of Heaven is anti-climactic after the Summer Palace. Everything is amazing, but by day 4 it all starts to look the same. Before we say goodbye to China, we hit up a big flea market where a blur of relentless women are all trying to sell the same knock-off purses.

Conclusion: I am a little sad to come back to Seoul, even if the pollution in Beijing makes Seoul's air seem mountain-fresh. OK, so it's not really fair to compare 2 months of working in Seoul with 4 days' vacation in Beijing. Anyway, now I am super excited for Japan. I have a feeling that the Engrish and fashion will be even better there...
