I don't know if Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture exist.

But Astana is a booming city, they win a lot of oil-gas deal. May be 10-20 years from now, Astana will became like Dubai.

This is quite interesting topic, I like it.

looking at pictures of Yining (or Gulja as some call it). even though its in the Ili Kazakh Prefecture, it looks mostly a mix Uighur and Han city. Not very Kazakh at all.

Aren't most Chinese Kazakhs nomads still? while Kazakhstan Kazakhs urban?

lol it's hard to gauge a city's ethnic composition with just a couple street shots.

there's a lot of han people in that area but the kazakh population is pretty large too, definitely more than uyghurs.

not sure whether most kazakhs in xinjiang are urban or rural, but a huge amount of the tourism there revolves around traditional kazakh culture (which is pretty similar to mongolian culture, quite different from the uyghurs)

Yining, feels like it has a nice atmosphere.....
