sanjupalayat January 28th, 2011, 06:40 AM Lose an hour in the morning, and you will be all day hunting for it. ~Richard Whately
We will start with this meaningful thought by Richard Whatley, yes the morning hours are so precious and for a few citizens of Calicut like me the life starts by 5.30 AM, while majority of them will be still enjoying their dreams, but people are becoming more health conscious these days and the number of people coming out for activities in the early morning hours like Jogging, walk and yoga are increasing day by day.
In calicut, places like Sarovaram, Beach-side Promenade, Mini-bypass road etc are becoming popular places to start an healthy day. I can say in few months time, Mananchira will also re-join this group after renovations undergoing are over. Here i will post a few snaps which i took with my mobile cam today from Sarovaram Biopark.

coolclt March 3rd, 2011, 06:01 AM Kozhikode: ‘Soorya Thejassode Amma,' a programme of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), scheduled to be held here on Wednesday to raise funds for indigent film artistes, will be held Thursday in view of the Sivarathri celebrations at Sreekanteswaram Temple, located close to Corporation Stadium, the venue.
Soorya TV and Malabar Gold, the sponsors, said the event was being postponed for ‘technical reasons.'
Government sources said the Collector had asked the organisers to postpone the show as the police had given a report that there would be a law and order problem if the programme coincided with the temple festivities.
In a related developed, hundreds of devotees marched to the stadium on Wednesday in protest against AMMA holding the programme on the day. The police blocked the protesters.
District Collector P.B. Salim held conciliatory talks with both the parties at his residence to sort out the issue. Sreekanteswara Kshetra Yogam president P.V. Chandran, treasurer I.P. Pushparajan, Surya TV representative Nidi Anil, AMMA joint secretary Edavela Babu and others took part in the talks. On Tuesday, Kovoor temple committee president Kuttil Satheeshan had filed a petition in the Kozhikode Munsiff Court-II seeking a stay on the programme. The petitioner had stated that AMMA programme would be a disturbance to the smooth conduct of the temple festival. Munsiff A. Rajakumaram, in his order, observed that the AMMA programme should not be a disturbance to the temple festival. AMMA president Innocent said in a press release here that the organisation's monthly financial aid to artistes would be raised from Rs.2,500 to Rs.4,000.

Not just that it has the best telescopes ( 4 telescopes ) and facilities among other planetariums and the activity here is very high. It grew only because of its performance. Dont know how many people know this, the shows shown there are made in calicut only. Also calicut planetarium has good reputation from counterparts of other state for being much active in astronomy and science.

K@PP!R!S July 21st, 2011, 06:24 AM The Calicut Forum for IT (CafIT) will hold a panel discussion here on August 29 for small Information Technology (IT) companies ‘to look at opportunities around the India growth story.'
The programme is intended to benefit start-up companies, business owners, sales and marketing managers, and management students. Experts in various fields will speak.
Duleep Sahadevan, co-founder and director of Software Associates, said here on Wednesday that the Indian domestic IT industry was slowly waking up. The number of small and medium industries had realized the need to be lean and IT was the only way ahead to build businesses, he said.
Many opportunities existed for Indian product companies to leverage on the country's growth.
The number of cities with a million-plus population would double in the next 10 years, he said.
e-governance is also coming up in a big way. Further, Aadhaar is being implemented by most of State governments. (Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification (UID) number which the Unique Identification Authority of India is issuing for Indian citizens).
Challenges but varied from product pricing, implementation, and regional preferences.
‘Rework strategies'
Hiring cross cultural workforce, managing finances, strategy, operations, and logistics were other aspects. Apart from meeting the challenges, there should be a complete rework on existing selling strategies, Mr. Sahadevan said.
Information Technology and management experts, Nishi Ranjan (Arbitron Kozhikode); George Ninan (Tech27); Sheje Chungath (Sesame Software); Anwar (Aufait Technologies); Leepesh Parat (Zestybeans); Sainu Aibdeen (Cybrosys ), and Ajay (Sweans Technologies) are expected to speak.
Mr. Sahadevan is expected to make a presentation on product management and marketing expertise.

Less than a decade ago, Karaparamba in Kozhikode city was just an emerging suburb with some commercial establishments and houses. But new villas and apartments have slowly pushed this locality, in the north-eastern part of the city, into a thriving residential area.
Nearly 35 villas constructed by Lesly Properties and 74 flats developed by the Life Insurance Corporation of India at Jeevan Bima Nagar are examples.
Today, several builders intend to take up big projects at Karaparamba. A 24-storey apartment complex, Lifestyle Towers, of Lifestyle Builders, with 82 residential units is coming up. The proposed 40-storey Burj Alhind of Alhind Builders aims to be Kerala's tallest building. The project will have 212 apartments, apart from a commercial plaza.
Property developers say the 1.8-km stretch from Karikkamkulam to East Hill is witnessing a realty boom. Small and big builders have begun constructing turnkey houses, villas, flats, and commercial spaces. The rise of this area has been attributed to the presence of educational institutions, road connectivity, and good neighbourhoods.
Many residents feel that the Kozhikode Corporation and the State government should develop infrastructure with the heightened construction activity in the area. Most roads at Karikkamkulam, Karaparamba, Eranhipalam, East Hill, and West Hill will be inadequate to meet the volume of vehicles in future. Traffic is already heavy on these roads, not only during peak hours but during off-peak hours as well.
The 900-m Karikkamkulam-Karaparamba road, linking to the Mini Bypass, is part of a major State highway passing through the city.
This is the road taken by people travelling directly to Kakkayam, via Balussery, from the city.
The Kozhikode Government Homeopathic Hospital is on this road, close to the two upcoming big projects.
“A solution now is to widen the existing road from Vagbhatananda Park to Eranhipalam and convert it into a one-way to solve traffic snarls,” says T.P. Rajeevan, poet and novelist, residing at Jeevan Bima Nagar.
Others say the widening of the road from Karikkamkulam to West Hill Chungam is the best option. “Besides, the road from Karaparamba junction to Eranhipalam should be widened to allow the smooth flow of traffic with a flyover at Eranhipalam, says P.S. Abdul Gafoor of Kairali Nagar on Florican Road.
The 900-m Karaparamba-East Hill road on the Mini Bypass needs urgent expansion.
Several educational institutions, such as Kendriya Vidyalaya, the Government Boys Higher Secondary School at East Hill, the Government Physical Education College, a pre-matric hostel, the Government Youth Hostel, the Food Crafts Institute and the Government Higher Secondary School at Karaparamba lie on this stretch.
The Government Guest House, the PWD Rest House, and the State Institute of Hospitality Management are on the 1.2-km Road from East Hill to West Hill Chungam on National Highway no. 17.
“This means that roads connecting either to the Mini Bypass or National Highway should be widened to solve traffic problems. The State government should initiate measures to secure land in possession of the West Hill Barracks under the Defence Ministry to widen the Mini Bypass,” says P.A. Jaiprakash of East Hill Housing Colony.
He says that the civic authorities are yet to give a thought to developing Manjunatha Rao Road ( East Hill-Chakkorathukulam road), named in memory of the first Mayor of Kozhikode, and People's Road connecting Karaparamba and West Hill.
These two roads are vital links to the Government Engineering College, the Government Polytechnic College, BEM Upper Primary School, St. Michael's Girls Higher Secondary School, and Little Daffodils School, all at West Hill.

His neighbourhood eats, drinks and sleeps football and it was quite natural that young Lazim Ali started dribbling the soccer ball at a tender age.
Six years down the line, he is recognised as the most skillful player in the under-13 category in the whole of Asia.
Hailing from a soccer crazy locality in Kallai, Kozhikode, Lazim was instrumental, with his awe-inspiring passes and deceptive skill game, in the impressive campaign of India under-13 football team at the AFC football festival in Iran this year.
A Class IX student of St. Joseph’s Boys School, Kozhikode, Lazim learned the game in the Sports & Education Promotion Trust (SEPT). His first exposure to competitive football was playing in Kochi and Goa under the banner of SEPT at the age of seven.
The teenager, who confesses being a die-hard fan of EPL soccer team Arsenal and the mighty Barcelona, is inspired by the wizardry of Messi and Robin Van Persie. “I follow all their games on TV and would love to meet them some day,” says young Lazim.
Perhaps being an ardent follower of two of the game’s most skilled tacticians helps him excel as a playmaker. “I am a midfielder and that is the best place on the field. In the Indian team I was left winger, but I have played more in the central midfield,” he says.
It was the nurturing at SEPT that helped him evolve as a promising soccer player and he was fortunate to tour Malaysia as a 10-year-old. “The experience there was amazing, they have beautiful grounds and very skilled footballers,” says Lazim.
It was his fabulous play in the under-13 football festival played in Thirunelveli earlier this year that paved way for his entry to the national side. He had top scored with 18 goals for his home State and also helped in plenty other assists.
Lazim is the youngest of the three children of Mohammad Ali and Arifa. His brother Mohammed Jaseem and Nafla are proud about their little brother, about whom the whole neighbourhood talks with great pride.
Like Pele said, ‘Everything is practice’ and Lazim knows it quite well. He has made it a routine to get to the Farook College Ground for training in the evenings.
Where do you like to play when you are a senior player?
The soccer kid thinks for a while and then says, “I would love to play for India, but it is also my dream to play in a professional club in Europe like Van Persie and Messi.”

moreover the autowallahs make it sure that only those with CC permit plies in the city. Its high time share autos of the TATA magic variety are allowed to ply within city. That will force the CC autos to cater to outskirts customers as well.

This is what happens once you get down at bus stand. You get to clear the autowala interview. Where is the destination etc. After you tell the destination they will first think and tell whether they will go or not. If they will go, what would be the fare 1.5 or 2 times or some 10-20 bucks extra.! One auto driver told me that they dont travel more than 5kms! and anything more than that "meeterum pakudhiyum" Well one effect is that i have improved my vocabulary so well and given my best insults to auto drivers that they forget in their life. Last time when I got down there were two passengers like me looking for an auto..and one guy asked 2 times charge we were showering with "words" on him that he flew away!.
If you do not have any luggage and are in a bit casual dress you are more likely to get a descent auto fare!.
RKPV September 12th, 2011, 02:32 PM Agree. Could have done little more on exterior. Does apsara too have 3D now? It did showed My dear kuttichatan when it was released first time.
All of the A,B,C and D centers in Kerala shown 'My dear kuttichathan'- first version on that time.
Aslesh September 12th, 2011, 04:29 PM All of the A,B,C and D centers in Kerala shown 'My dear kuttichathan'- first version on that time.
The second version was also shown in local C class theaters.
PPJ September 12th, 2011, 05:35 PM Does the C and D class theatres also have 3D projection mechanism. For steroscopic 3D projection two projectors are required and the screen should be a good reflector. I assume the earlier versions used anaglyph 3D wherein only normal projection mechanism was required with red-blue glasses so that any theatre could show them.

simpliCITY October 25th, 2011, 08:05 AM 'Tathva', the annual techno-management festival, organized by the National Institute of Technology in Calicut (NITC) is held during the month of October every year.
This was aimed at stirring originality, technical interest among students and awareness among the public.
The techno management festival played host to a range of lectures, seminars, workshops, competitions, paper presentations, exhibitions, quizzes, model displays and robotics events.
The event serves as a platform for the students to showcase their aptitude. It attracted budding engineers from all over the country.
The organizer and a student of the NITC, Abhinav, said that the cheer and positive response the young students got was phenomenal.
"We had basically planned this fair keeping in mind that all first year students and beginners get encouragement. We have a got excellent response and approximately 40 teams have registered online. Till now the matches for 15 teams are already done and right now the best match is going on. As you can see a lot of people have come to watch this event. I feel all the beginners are getting a lot of support and encouragement from this," said Abhinav.
One of the major attractions this year was the 'Dirt Race' in which the main spotlight was on construction of a robotic car (wired/wireless), which could race and compete against other.
Jithin, a first-year student at the institute and a participant in the fair, sounded enthusiastic and said the support he got from his senior colleagues was very useful.
"It is so exciting and we are doing it for the first time. We are only just first years and we had no idea what to do and what not to do. Had almost one week to finish all this stuff. We got help from the Internet and also from a fourth year guy whose name is Pankaj. He was a great help in the case of the technical and the affairs," said Jithin.
The festival was first held in the year 2000 as a Students' National Technical Symposium and two years later it turned out to be an annual event of the college.
Now it is among the most highlighted technical congregations in the country and is also amongst the most keenly awaited. (ANI)

mohammedirshad06 November 21st, 2011, 06:13 AM State Film Awards Nite in Kozhikode
Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman Priyadarshan said here on Sunday that the State Film awards night, to be held at the Corporation Stadium here on November 28, would be a colourful affair.
“The awards night in Kozhikode is the outcome of the move to take the function out of a small hall in Thiruvananthapuram to large venues in different districts of the State,” Mr. Priyadarshan said at a press conference.
The film director said the suggestion to make Kozhikode a venue of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) would be considered seriously. Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan, who also spoke at the press meet, said the Academy should think of building a cinema complex in the city that could be the permanent venue of the IFFK; and that was seconded by MLA A. Pradeep Kumar.
“The Academy has been trying to get a complex of its own in Thiruvananthapruam for the last several years, but if we could get land somewhere else in the State we could go ahead,” Mr. Priyadarshan said.
About the awards night he said it would be held in two parts – the distribution of awards, by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, and the show of music and dance featuring big names in cinema. “Tamil actor Suriya and Dileep will be special guests of the function,” he added.
Playback singers Hariharan, Karthik, Shwetha Mohan, Madhu Balakrishnan, Rajalakshmy, Rimy Tomy, will be part of the live music show, while actors Bhavana, Remya Nambeesan, Shaman Kasim, Sruthy Lakshmi and Mallika will dance. The presence of award winners such as Kavya Madhavan, Saleem Kumar, Biju Menon and Mamta Mohandas would add more glamour to the function.
Union Ministers E. Ahamed and Mullappally Ramachandran, Ministers K.B. Ganesh Kumar and M.K. Muneer, MLA Elamarom Kareem and Mayor A.K. Premajam would attend the awards ceremony.
Entry will be through free passes.
District Collector P.B. Salim, Academy vice chairman Gandhimathi Balan, Academy secretary K.G. Santhosh and scriptwriter T.A. Razak also attended the press meet.
‘Avoidable situation'
Later, speaking on the sidelines of the press conference, Mr. Priyadarshan said the various strikes in the cinema industry, by producers, distributors and theatre owners, would do little good to Malayalam cinema. “So many films, including mine, have been affected by the strike,” he said. “The current situation was entirely avoidable.”
He said the organisations needed to do an introspection on whether such strikes would benefit cinema. “Releasing Malayalam cinema widely is the best way to combat piracy.” When the rest of the world could release films in as many centres as they want to, whey should there be a restriction only for Malayalam films? And there is no point in complaining that superstars are demanding huge payment. We should not forget that nobody is forcing a producer to cast Mammotty or Mohanlal.”

K@PP!R!S January 9th, 2012, 01:43 PM To eat street food in Kerala, eateries called “Thattukadas” are the right joints. The cheap, local dishes they serve are popular even with food aficionados and tourists.
But unhygienic conditions in some of them are a major concern, especially for local bodies. Only a small number of vendors strictly adhere to guidelines on cleanliness. A majority of them operate at night, evading the regulatory mechanisms.
In Kozhikode, for instance, these eateries have a huge clientele. Several of these outlets have come up at smaller junctions. This has made the City Corporation draw up a programme to give a facelift to some of these food joints in public places.
Officials have worked out the modalities for using the Poverty Social Fund, a part of the Community Development Component of the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP), assisted by the Asian Development Bank, for the programme.
K.P. Krishnakumar, Social Development Officer, says the project has been designed with focus on rehabilitation of street vendors who prepare and sell food items in the street. As of now, the project will be beneficial only to those who already possess a licence to run “Thattukadas.”
The civic body has given licence to 110 stalls. But only 40 of them will be selected for the pilot project. The mode of operation will be based on the types of vendors — those functioning during the day and those at night. The daytime vendors will be in the scheme called Delight Market and night vendors, Moonlight Market.
Mr. Krishnakumar says the beneficiaries will be provided a specially designed cart to handle food. The cart will have provision for storing, displaying, and preparing food, waste bins, and other facilities.
Each vendor will get Rs.1 lakh, which includes the cart price of Rs.80,000. The KSUDP will provide 25 per cent of the project cost as subsidy and five per cent will be the contribution from the beneficiary. The remaining will be bank loan. There will be 20 each carts in the two markets, he says.
All the five Corporations in the State are toying with the idea of implementing the street vendor project utilising the Poverty Social Fund of the KSUDP.
Safety
The objective of the project is to ensure the safe handling of food and its distribution in healthy surroundings and to guarantee a decent income to the street vendors to enhance their social status, Mr. Krishnakumar says.
Recently, the State government accorded entrepreneurial status to street vendors for protecting their rights. The Department of Local Self-Government also notified a State Policy on Street Vendors after recognising their contribution to the economy of the State.
Street-vending has to a great extent brought down unemployment and poverty. It has become a part and parcel of the life of people in urban and rural areas.
Officials say the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation formulated the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors two years ago considering street-vending as a source of self-employment for the poor in cities. It had then found street-vending as a means to provide affordable and convenient services to a majority of the urban population.
The policy had then suggested that local bodies develop spaces on a time-sharing model for vendors.
A registered vendor can be permitted to vend in designated vending zones without restrictions especially during non-rush hours. Markets can be allowed to run from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. as night bazaars.

Celebrated women leaders from various walks of life will take part in the festival, organised as part of the foundation-stone laying ceremony of ‘Thantedam' gender park for women at Vellimadukunnu.

For the successful conducting of the event, the State government would spend Rs.2 crore, he said.

K@PP!R!S February 4th, 2012, 06:23 AM One of the oldest and cherished cultural landmarks of the city, The Crown theatre, was closed for a major revamp a couple of weeks ago. When it opens in April, viewers will be in for a whole new viewing experience, promises the management of the seven decade-old theatre.
It will have better ambience and superior comfort for viewers. “The Crown will have two screens, with a seating capacity of 200 and 150 respectively, in tune with multiplex standards,” A.R. Vinod, one of the proprietors told The Hindu. The theatre, which initiated generations of viewers in the Malabar region to world cinema will also have a much improved projection system (4 K enabled), with high resolution picture quality.
Active 3-D facility and Active 3-way sound system will be some of the other major reforms. The twin playhouses will have stadium-seating arrangements. The management, according to him, is expecting an investment of Rs.2.5 crore for the renovation.
The Crown, which started as a drama house in 1935, was converted into a theatre in the 40s. It was always among the first to upgrade screening technologies in cinema. “We were the first in Malabar to introduce 70MM and the first in Kerala to introduce Dolby sound system,” says Mr. Vinod. The theatre, which had showed only English movies from the 1960s, began screening Hindi movies in the mid 90s.
It was the changing demands of viewers that made the management consider renovation. “Audience want comfort, the best of ambience,” says Mr. Vinod, who also hinted at a rise in the ticket rates proportional to the new facilities.
“We will reopen with the 3-D version of one of the most loved Hollywood movies — Titanic ,” he said.
The viewers are also promised with a huge surprise when it reopens in the first week of April. “A big name from Hollywood,” said Mr. Vinod.

K@PP!R!S February 4th, 2012, 06:38 AM KOZHIKODE: Buoyed up by the developmental projects such as IT parks and rising migration, the house and flat owners in the district are pushing up their house rents. In the last two years, the average rent for a two bedroom house in the city has increased to Rs 5,000 from Rs 2,500. The rent for a single bedroom house has increased from Rs 1,500-2,000 to Rs 3,500-4,500.
Gone are the days when houses remained vacant after occupants left. "Now 5-6 people approach me every day to for rented house," said K V Antony, who owns a two-storied house in East Hill. Houses in areas such as West Hill, East Hill, Karaparamba, Chakorathukulam and Nadakkavu have witnessed a steep rise in rents thanks to presence of Government Engineering College and the Central School.
The rent is expected to increase further once the IT parks start functioning. The lack of hostel facilities in the Government Engineering College has also resulted in an increase in rent.
The rent for flats too has witnessed a steep rise. The rent of a two bedroom flat has increased from Rs 4,000-5,000 a few years ago to Rs 15,000. Flat owners charge Rs 20,000 as rent for a three bedroom flat. A few years ago it was just Rs 7,000.
According to a broker who arranges rented houses the rent is low in areas such as Mankavu and Kallai compared to northern areas in the city. "Owners demand higher rent for ground floor," he said.
Once the UL Cyber Park and Government Cyber Park starts functioning fully, house rents in Thondayad and nearby areas are expected to sky rocket again.
A new high
The rent for a two bedroom house has increased to Rs 5,000 from Rs 2,500
For single bedroom it is Rs 3,500-4,500
For a two bedroom flat the rent is Rs 15,000
For three bedroom flats, owners charge up to Rs 20,000
