Searched through this forum (at least in the Cityscape section) and there weren't any threads dedicated to Traffic jams yet..might as well start one

Traffic Jams are a common sight in most if not all major Asian cities. Share pictures and possibly a story of you experience/thoughts of Traffic Jams happening in your city in this thread

Yes... Malaysia in general is relatively a small nation in terms of population. But the country sold a record-breaking 605,156 passengers cars last year. It previously had the largest passenger automobile market in ASEAN ever since.

On a ratio basis, I read somewhere Malaysia has one of the highest car per population in the world. And also has one of the highest road accident per population ratio.

There are approximately 30 highways around Metro KL.

traffic jam in Kl usually occur in peak hour...early in the morning (7am-9am) when people going to work, 5pm-8pm when people back from work and of course during festive season such as aidilfitri and Chinese new year..

i think it's totally fine posting all those jams in KL and any other cities but it would be better to indicate whether or not it was taken on a rush hour, a regular day, a weekend, a holiday so other people can have comparative observation... for instance, what was seen of KL above might not be exactly what one would expect on a regular day 'coz traffic jams happens only on holidays and festive seasons as what some people would claim.

probably no SEA + E.ASIA cities could ever beat Bangkok for traffic congestion :( we will be living in the hell on earth for the next three years when the 7 new BTS+MRT lines are built.

^^ 7 New BTS+MRT lines? That's great..The traffic will be annoying but personally I wouldn't mind seeing gridlock due to these projects, you can call it traffic generated for a good cause (Mass Transit) unlike the increased traffic in two of Jakarta's arterial roads which is due to a project that is benefiting private transit (5 km long Flyovers)

patchay
January 31st, 2011, 09:26 AM
Malaysia will hear of at least another 7 new highways this year.

KL is building a new 155km MRT system costing more than 40 billion ringgit.

And another 17.7km extension to the existing LRT.

It is also, and again, mulling a bullet train from Penang - KL - Singapore.

Malaysian traffic jam: I think some of the photos shown are taken during festive period, especially the one entitled "outside KL". The traffic is bad during peak hours but I don't think it is as bad as BKK or JKT. Btw the population of Metro KL is 7.2 million. It should not be confused with KL city (mainly city centre area only).

Sometimes, the traffic in the Cross Harbour Tunnel can be that bad that some taxi drivers refuse to accept passengers heading from HK Island to Kowloon within this route or vice versa.

It would be interesting to see if anybody have pics of traffic jam in Singapore, probably the most non car centric SE Asian city. I've personally experienced jams there but the traffic is still flowing (traffic moving 20-30km/h on a short stretch of the AYE/ECP) and have seen cab drivers refuse to take the CTE when traveling to/from the Airport and the City.

In a major ASEAN city? Yes! But its a small place and just like HK most people take public transportation.

But I heard the government is encouraging its citizens to buy cars so they can earn more in the ERPs.

Most major ASEAN cities are built to be car centric especially Jakarta and KL.

My worse experience was during the rehabilitation of South Luzon Expressway + construction of Skyway 2.

From those pics above, it's interesting to note how similar the road infrastructures and signages are esp. those of HK, Singapore and KL (British legacy), Jakarta (Dutch), as for Bangkok and Manila, it seems to be a mish-mash of influences from the US and Europe.....Btw, I've always wondered, why do Thais drive on the wrong side of the road like us? How did that came about? I'm sure there's not much British influence since Thailand has never been colonized.....

Its just like Japan where they drive on the left side.

Most Asian countries drive on the left side of the road. The only countries/territories that right on the right would be China, Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines and the Indochinese countries.

Philippine highways is mostly US influenced. Like the right of way and the use of green signs. Plus some highway or road markings uses the "highway gothic" font similar to those used on US highways.

Although there are some blue coloured highway markings on national roads around the country such as those in Baguio.

Which is odd for HKers driving north of the border. Some cars have both HK and China plates

But when I was in Malaysia, I'm almost hit by cars whenever I cross the road coz in the Philippines we're used of this "PAN LEFT FIRST, THEN RIGHT". But in Malaysia, I always forget to pan right first instead of left

The problem with most major ASEAN cities is they are either semi car centric or fully car centric. Cities like Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur are more geared towards the automobile than the pedestrian.

Some people are either too lazy to walk or do not want to walk due to the hot tropical weather. But again, SG also has similar weather to most ASEAN cities but people walk there. Also, their public transportation system is one of the best.

Decades ago, streetcars were a common sight all over Tokyo. However, as car ownership increased, streetcars were seen as an annoying contributor to traffic jams and streetcar lines were shut down. Today, only the Toden Arakawa streetcar line and the Tokyu Setagaya tramway line remain.

However, as this report from “Bankisha” shows, streetcars are about to make a comeback in Tokyo

xh320l

This year’s Tokyo city budget includes funding for the construction of a new light rail transit (LRT) line, running from Ginza to the Harumi area of Chuo Ward.

lot of new office and apartment buildings have been built in the area over the last decade, and existing mass transit cannot meet the demands of residents. A lot of people are annoyed with having to take long walks or wait a considerable time for buses.

The report mentions some advantages of streetcar/LRT lines:

•Tracks can be set up so that the streetcars can move forward regardless of automobile traffic.
•Because streetcars can be easily brought to a halt, it is not dangerous to run a streetcar within close proximity of another streetcar. During rush hour, many streetcars can follow closely behind each other on the same track.
•In the downtown area of the French city of Strasbourg, an LRT system has replaced automobile traffic. By restricting the automobile access to the area, it has beautified the city and reduced air pollution.
•LRT lines can be a very convenient for handicapped or elderly passengers. The LRT line in Toyama city runs low to the ground and close to boarding platforms. Passengers do not need to climb up stairs to board the car, and there are no large gaps on platforms that could cause trouble for wheelchairs or carts.

didn't you know the different between KL and Singapore in term of city planning?

they in singapore mostly 90% living in verticals. the city is compact. just like HK. so they can go to places within walk.

KL on the other hand is sprawling, just like american cities. it's not just about weather!

they in singapore mostly 90% living in verticals. the city is compact. just like HK. so they can go to places within walk.

KL on the other hand is sprawling, just like american cities. it's not just about weather!

That is what I noticed with most cities. The dense, vertical ones are usually pedestrian oriented while most sprawling cities are car centric.

But cities such as Tokyo which is also spread out + dense is more a walking city. For one, they have a good railway/metro system.

HK on the other hand, its city centre is the only area of the city with high pedestrian activity. Those living in outskirts not accessible by MTR will have to rely on either the public bus or an automobile.

Kim Lien Underpass,yes....those pics show to you the traffic jam in Kim Lien underpass. the traffic flow is terrible.........Opened from 2007, Kim Lien has worked very great, but 2008 to now it really can't hold enough of them.

this goes to show how quickly Vietnam has developed.

I wouldn't be surprised. This is Asia where development happens fast.

How do you consider Bangkok? Its it more pedestrian oriented or car centric?

8 years ago I would say car centric, but today I am not so sure anymore with all good transportation (BTS, MRT, Airport/cityline express, BRT). I will leave that question to somebody else living there, haven't been to Bangkok for a long time.

I thought you are currently living there.

I was in BKK back in 2008. I walked within the area where I stayed (Pratunam / Rachada Square area) but took public transportation to other areas. In BKK, the areas that I find walkable would be Grand Palace area including Khao San Rd. some areas of Silom and Sukhumvit. Other areas require a car or public transportation.

In South East Asia, I would say both BKK and Manila share a similar orientation. There are areas within these cities where people walk and pedestrian activity is high. On the other hand, there are also areas within the city centre that are suitable for wheels, not for feet

Live in Stockholm/Sweden but I lived in Bangkok 1999-2003, loved it, best time in my life, that is why I love Bangkok so much :D.

Yeah, Bangkok is pedestrian friendly at some areas but at other, it's just annoying, especially with all street vendors selling food/clothes. You even have to walk on the streets to get by at some areas, because they are blocking too much, and sometimes motorcycles are driving on the pavements to escape the traffic, and guess what all bicycle lanes are used for, exactly, motorcycles haha. Not so pedestrian friendly huh? :D

But on the other hand bicycles like to block a whole lane, as in this pic:

In Indonesia, not only the megapolitan which suffers Traffic Jam ...
Here in Pekanbaru, Sumatra Region's 4th largest city.

ANd NOT IN THE LIST OF NATION's TOP 12 largest city (by population).
Pekanbaru
Riau, Sumatra
Population 903,000 (2010)
Population 583,000 (2000)

See how this impact the traffic...

^^ Luckily, no such traffic jam in Pekanbaru not until 2-3 years ago when such condition seems to be "common" during rush hour.
THis is normal 5PM traffic back in early 2008
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2056/2350062419_faa2f73377_z.jpg?zz=1

Just compare with the the first 2 pictures which were taken in 2010-2011 era :D.

Now for this major arterial road passing through city center, we already closed several intersections with traffic light indicators.. Hell yeah that was just happened in last 5-10 years. Right now, there are only 2 operated intersections with traffic light indicators ... Both of them are currently racing with the rapid growth of the city.

That's why the 2 intersections are planned to be bypassed by 2 flyovers currenty in U/C status.

BEERUSIK

^^ Yes the motorcycle rapid transit.
It faster than car when you stuck in the way of traffic jams .Thailand Motorcycle taxis are common forms for public transport in Bangkok and most other cities , towns and villages in Thailand. They are generally used for short trips. In Bangkok, there are motorcycle taxi queues on many sois, and the queues are regulated by the city's government. Licensed motorcycle-taxi operators wear orange vests. In compliance with Thailand's helmet law, many (but not all) carry a spare helmet to offer to passengers
many people always use " the Motorcycle taxi" some says Superman, it's necessary when you have no time to wait the Mass transit ,or you lazy to walk.

here they are our top model:lol:

Beijing added more than 1million car to the road last year, the citys car market is bigger than the whole s korea, the whole Beijing city is like a car park during rush hour, thankfully, the goverment noticed this problem and set a quota of 50,000 car plates issue per month, I hope with the new subway line added to the system, traffic would improve significantly.
