Marseille - France

Marseille celebrated its 2600th birthday before the year 2000. It is therefore the oldest town in France. The legend surrounding the origins of the town go back to 600 B.C. Greek sailors coming from Phocaea (Asia Minor) chose to focus their activity in the Lacydon creek - the present location of the Vieux Port. The day they arrived, the leader of the Greeks, Protis made a visit to the Ligure tribe, which had settled there. It just so happened that on that very day, Gyptis, daughter of King Naan was to be married. Gyptis chose Protis as her husband above a number of other suitors - he had also fallen head over heels for her - and thus, Massalia was founded.
Massalia quickly became a successful city thanks to the commercial talent of the Greeks. Trading posts were set up all along the Mediterranean coast, in particular at Agde, Arles and Le Brusc. Massalia's history is one of turbulence and uncertainty. Initially the city went into decline when it was taken over by Rome. Her fleet, treasure and trading posts became the property of Caesar. After the invasions she became a port which was favourable to commercial activity. In the eleventh century, the city began to expand. A vast boatyard came under construction but Marseille quickly fell under the control of Charles d'Anjou. The town also opposed Louis XIV, and was conquered once again. The Fort Saint Nicolas and the Fort Saint Jean were both built. At that time, Massalia was under the control of Colbert who developed the city's infrastructure. Business prospered om an international scale.

Periods of prosperity alternate with times of crisis, and just when Massalia had become a truly international port it was hit by a plague. The Great Plague was a major event during the eighteenth century. The origins of the epidemic were a ship ' Le Grand Saint Antoine. Quarantine was not sufficient, and the plague swept through the town. In May 1720 Marseille was cut off from the rest of Provence. The parliament in Aix forbade any communication with Marseille ' upon pain of death. However the plague continued to spread all the same ' to Aix, Apt, Arles, Toulon, and soon the whole of France was touched by it. The city was not completely wiped out, but it had lost half its population. The revolution was eagerly received. It was in 1792 that the war song, sung by the army of the Rhine and composed by Rouget de Lisle - known as La Marseillaise - became an anthem. Marseille then rebelled against the 'Convention'. As a result she became 'the town with no name' for a few months.

The town was also involved in World War II. At the time she was under the jurisdiction of the central power and districts such as Panier were destroyed. Once the war was over, the port became an important thoroughfare, and the city built hospitals and the metropolitan network.

Today excavations which have been carried out in the Vieux Port area and in the Centre Bourse, have revealed many vestiges of the past. They reveal that this city is a place with an extremely rich and varied history.

More photo's please ;)

This town has such a bad reputation, yet it never looks too bad in photo's.

Still, it seems to lack trees, and for the life of me, I can never tell where the city center is. Does it have a vibrant downtown - one suitable for a city of it's size?

It's public transit is also very limited for a European city of this size.

Why are there so few photo's of this town?

Marseille - France

Marseille celebrated its 2600th birthday before the year 2000. It is therefore the oldest town in France. The legend surrounding the origins of the town go back to 600 B.C.

Nonsense, the city of Toulouse is older and was founded by the first Aquitanian people (related to the Basques and and Etruscans, it is said they were the first settlers in Europe but it's not confirmed and little thing survived from the Aquitanians and Etruscans civilizations) in the 8th century BC. Therefore it's older than Marseille. And soon will reach it's 3000 years (yet we don't know when it was first built so it will be hard to mark it's birthday, I assume Marseille is the oldest city of France and where we have a precise time of its creation).

Aside of this I vote 8.

good idea to open a thread about Marseille and thank you Henry Chinaski for all those photos :)

Euromediterranée, Marseille

One of the largest construction programs in any major European city, with new construction totaling 1.2 million square meters (12.8 million sq. ft) of floor space to be built. This includes :

600,000 sq. m (6,402,000 sq. ft) office space

400,000 sq. m (4,268,000 sq. ft) residential property

200,000 sq. m (1,067,000 sq. ft) retail and leisure space

Euroméditerranée's business district is built around the new high speed train station on Marseille's waterfront. The area has the highest concentration of telecommunications networks in Southern France.

Euroméditerranée will favor the emergence of a major metropolitan area within a Mediterranean region committed to shared prosperity. The free-trade area (EU + Northern Africa) to result in 2010 will have a combined population of 500 million.

From the aerial shots, it looks more Greek than French. Either way, it looks very vibrant and intriguing. I agree with cellete in that it does indeed bear striking similarities to Barcelona from some angles. How can that be bad?!!!

The collection of pictures is very strange! Some look like post cards, there is a satellite photo thrown in for good measure and even a map. The city, from what I can tell is not that attractive, especially for France and especially for being on the Mediterannean.

That idea of a EU-North African free trade zone sounds bad. Besides Libyan oil, what exactly is there to trade with the Maghreb countries.

PS: I vote 4/10.

You don't need skyscrapers to have a skyline.
In many threads church towers or other landmarks are even more beautiful skylines
Even if the tall buildings are not grouped, every city has a skyline !

Well, chances are, if you come to a skyscraper forum, people are going to want skyscrapers.:|

The skyline is quite boring, but it has potential.

Even if it's the 3rd largest city of France, I really hate Marseille. It's ugly, it doesn't look french at all, it looks as if it was a poor and dirty north african city. Nothing seems to be modern there. I prefere Nice or Menton in the french riviera. The Euromediterranée business district project might change my mind though in the next years if it's sucessful.

The people who said that marseilles is like third world city are just ignorants and retarded .
Marseilles is the place where a lot of world's organisations have their HQ. Marseille is the HQ of the CMA/CGM the third shipping compagny in the world.
Marseilles is a major city in the domain of the health with an important level of research in cardiology or for the AIDS.
The next generation of nuclear reactors experimentation will be installed next to the city (ITER program) ETC.
After , say that a city is a third world city because , it doesn't have (yet) impressive skyline (exept two/three buildings) show the stupidity of some people (but you can rate 3/10 for the skyline it's different , that's juste your opinion). Anyway , this point is gonna change
Marseilles is a multiculutral city because it's the port where a lot of immigrants used to come from magreb on the 60'S when the city needed to be rebuilt. So there is a lot diversity and I don't see what's the problem with it . So maybe the city has a bigger part of poor population than other cities , but that's not huge compared to other cities.
And Marseille is not the best looking city in the world , but it's stay had a lot of charm , beauty ,and life , it's a vibrant city.

To finish Marseille is the Européan capital's city of the culture for 2013

Hope people will stop to judge wihout had seen , hope to see you in marseilles soon !
