Paris - France

Paris, city (1999 pop. 2,115,757; metropolitan area est. pop. 11,000,000), N central France, capital of the country, on the Seine River. It is the commercial and industrial focus of France and a cultural and intellectual center of international renown.
The city possesses an indefinable unity of atmosphere that has fascinated writers, poets, and painters for centuries. Paris is sometimes called the City of Light in tribute to its intellectual preeminence as well as to its beautiful appearance. Elegant stores and hotels, lavish nightclubs, theaters, and gourmet restaurants help make tourism the biggest industry in Paris. Other leading industries manufacture luxury articles, high-fashion clothing, perfume, and jewelry. Heavy industry, notably automobile manufacture, is located in the suburbs.
History
Julius Caesar conquered Paris in 52 B.C. It was then a fishing village, called Lutetia Parisiorum (the Parisii were a Gallic tribe), on the Île de la Cité. Under the Romans the town spread to the left bank and acquired considerable importance under the later emperors. The vast catacombs under Montparnasse and the baths (now in the Cluny Mus.) remain from the Roman period. Legend says that St. Denis, first bishop of Paris, was martyred on Montmartre (hence the name) and that in the 5th cent. St. Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris, preserved the city from destruction by the Huns. On several occasions in its early history Paris was threatened by barbarian and Norman invasions, which at times drove the inhabitants back to the Île de la Cité.
Clovis I and several other Merovingian kings made Paris their capital; under Charlemagne it became a center of learning. In 987, Hugh Capet, count of Paris, became king of France. The Capetians firmly established Paris as the French capital. The city grew as the power of the French kings increased. In the 11th cent. the city spread to the right bank. During the next two centuries—the reign of Philip Augustus (1180–1223) is especially notable for the growth of Paris—streets were paved and the city walls enlarged; the first Louvre (a fortress) and several churches, including Notre-Dame, were constructed or begun; and the schools on the left bank were organized into the Univ. of Paris. One of them, the Sorbonne, became a fountainhead of theological learning with Albertus Magnus and St. Thomas Aquinas among its scholars. The university community constituted an autonomous borough; another was formed on the right bank by merchants ruled by their own provost. In 1358, under the leadership of the merchant provost Étienne Marcel, Paris first assumed the role of an independent commune and rebelled against the dauphin (later Charles V). During the period of the Hundred Years War the city suffered civil strife (see Armagnacs and Burgundians), occupation by the English (1419–36), famine, and the Black Death.
The Renaissance reached Paris in the 16th cent. during the reign of Francis I (1515–47). At this time the Louvre was transformed from a fortress to a Renaissance palace. In the Wars of Religion (1562–98), Parisian Catholics, who were in the great majority, took part in the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day (1572), forced Henry III to leave the city on the Day of Barricades (1588), and accepted Henry IV only after his conversion (1593) to Catholicism. Cardinal Richelieu, Louis XIII's minister, established the French Academy and built the Palais Royal and the Luxembourg Palace. During the Fronde, Paris once again defied the royal authority. Louis XIV, distrustful of the Parisians, transferred (1682) his court to Versailles. Parisian industries profited from the lavishness of Versailles; the specialization in luxury goods dates from that time. J. H. Mansart under Louis XIV and François Mansart, J. G. Soufflot, and J. A. Gabriel under Louis XV created some of the most majestic prospects of modern Paris.
During the late 17th and the 18th cent. Paris acquired further glory as the scene of many of France's greatest cultural achievements: the plays of Molière, Racine, and Corneille; the music of Lully, Rameau, and Gluck; the paintings of Watteau, Fragonard, and Boucher; and the salons where many of the philosophes of the Enlightenment gathered. At the same time, growing industries had resulted in the creation of new classes—the bourgeoisie and proletariat—concentrated in such suburbs (faubourgs) as Saint-Antoine and Saint-Denis; in the opening events of the French Revolution, city mobs stormed the Bastille (July, 1789) and hauled the royal family from Versailles to Paris (Oct., 1789). Throughout the turbulent period of the Revolution the city played a central role.
Napoleon (emperor, 1804–15) began a large construction program (including the building of the Arc de Triomphe, the Vendôme Column, and the arcaded Rue de Rivoli) and enriched the city's museums with artworks removed from conquered cities. In the course of his downfall Paris was occupied twice by enemy armies (1814, 1815). In the first half of the 19th cent. Paris grew rapidly. In 1801 it had 547,000 people; in 1817, 714,000; in 1841, 935,000; and in 1861, 1,696,000. The revolutions of July, 1830, and Feb., 1848, both essentially Parisian events, had repercussions throughout Europe. Culturally, the city was at various times the home or host of most of the great European figures of the age. Balzac, Hugo, Chopin, Berlioz, Liszt, Wagner, Delacroix, Ingres, and Daumier were a few of the outstanding personalities. The grand outline of modern Paris was the work of Baron Georges Haussmann, who was appointed prefect by Napoleon III. The great avenues, boulevards, and parks are his work. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), Paris was besieged for four months by the Germans and then surrendered. After the Germans withdrew, Parisian workers rebelled against the French government and established the Commune of Paris, which was bloodily suppressed.
With the establishment of the Third French Republic and relative stability, Paris became the great industrial and transportation center it is today. Two epochal events in modern cultural history that took place in Paris were the first exhibition of impressionist painting (1874) and the premiere of Stravinsky's Sacre du Printemps (1913). In World War I the Germans failed to reach Paris. After 1919 the outermost city fortifications were replaced by housing developments, including the Cité Universitaire, which houses thousands of students. During the 1920s, Paris was home to many disillusioned artists and writers from the United States and elsewhere. German troops occupied Paris during World War II from June 14, 1940, to Aug. 25, 1944. The city was not seriously damaged by the war.
Paris was the headquarters of NATO from 1950 to 1967; it is the headquarters of UNESCO. A program of cleaning the city's major buildings and monuments was completed in the 1960s. The city was the scene in May, 1968, of serious disorders, beginning with a student strike, that nearly toppled the Fifth Republic. In 1971, Les Halles, Paris's famous central market, called by Zola the “belly” of Paris, was dismantled. Construction began immediately on Chatelet Les-Halles, Paris's new metro hub, which was completed in 1977. The Forum des Halles, a partially underground, multistory commercial and shopping center, opened in 1979. Other developments include the Georges Pompidou National Center for Art and Culture, built in 1977, which includes the National Museum of Modern Art. The Louvre underwent extensive renovation, and EuroDisney, a multibillion dollar theme and amusement park, opened in the Parisian suburbs in 1992. A number of major projects in the city were initiated by President François Mitterrand (1981–95); they include the new Bibliothèque Nationale, the glass pyramid at the Louvre, Grande Arche de la Défense, Arab Institute, Bastille Opera, and Cité de la Musique.

meh, who cares about that.. lol
Paris takes my breath away, stuff skyscrapers.. I just LOVE Paris, its architecture, its style, the straight long roads and tree-lined boulevards, the shops and cafes.. its stunning.. its beyond words really.. the second time I stayed in Paris I ended up fallin asleep on the balcony, lol.. because I couldn't take my eyes of the place.. even at night, when the Eiffel was sparkling and the place was quiet..
If I could speak French, I'd happily live there (but I don't think you should live somewhere if you can't speak a lil of the language..cos, its rude)

We already have a ROS for Paris.

You probably mean about ROS for "La Défense". It's not just one skyline. Paris(downtown) have one skyline and La Défense(business downtown) have different skyline.La Défense is not even in Paris. It's in the Hauts-de-Seine department. Just in case anybody was thinking of protesting against this land-grab, the new place was called 'La Défense' - as in 'don't mess with it.' Then it was given a Paris postal code. About three decades ago, some power types decided to place Paris' business downtown out of town so it wouldn't offend local sensitivities. This happened after the 56-story Tour Montparnasse was built before anyone realized what an eyesore it would be - for many Parisians and foreign tourists.

La Defense is ugly, nothing special in architecture here, buildings are simple and skyline isn't so good too.

58 forumers gave it the rating "3 or less" and especially inhabitants of Lyon and the French province but they should not be jealous because the rest of France is also beautiful and i know that London and Frankfort have a better skyline but paris, it's so beautiful ! Don't forget that Paris is the first tourist destination in the world. it is not for nothing...Rem, I can fully accept that you consider Frankfurt has a better skyline. Indeed, there are taller towers located in "Mainhattan" and certainly more beautiful individual towers over there than in La Défense.

However, I fail to see how it's that obvious that London has a better skyline than Paris. It could be the case in the future knowing that there's a longer list of projects and proposals in London than in Paris, but I wouldn't say that it's already the case today. Skyscrapers in London are about Canary Wharf, which is some kind of smaller and more boxy version of La Défense, and the City, which has only two real skyscrapers. London has a lot less skyscrapers than Paris does, and the quality of currently built towers in London isn't really above the quality we can see in Paris.

My point of view is certainly biased, but when I see towers such as the Société Générale Twins, the Total, CBX, Areva and EDF Towers, the Grande Arche or even the Montparnasse tower, I'd even tend to say that, today, the quality of towers in Paris is actually superior to the quality of towers in London, generally speaking of course.

Don't exaggerate with the most beautiful city of the world, look at this pictures and what you can see except old architecture ( old means here only 120 years ), the rest which is HUGE , are awful buildings, you can see them here, horrible ...

it's not like this that one imagine the most beautiful city of the world ... at those pictures you see many commies blocks = french architecture from 1960-1985, which is similar to commie blocks elsewhere and this near the historical center ( Champs Elysées ... ) ...

of course some place of this city are beautiful but others which are many too are simply horrible and this mean that it could be the most beautiful city of the world, because the most beautiful city is beautiful everywhere and this don't really exist in Europe or elsewhere, for a good example here is Paris where you can see beautiful and horrible at the same time ...

and each big city in Europe is like this ... few are beautiful everywhere ... : Venice, Prague, ETC... and add to Paris, this city has not much green spaces which is fatal for the charm ...

Paris architecture from 19 century is impressive, but the city itself isn't so well done to merit the reputation of the most ....

among the cities which are only made with 19-20 century architecture Paris is maybe the most popular ... but certainly Vienna which has it too, is cleanest and more dedicated ....

among cities from others periods ( renaissance to baroque ) like Prague, St Petersburg, Venice ... Paris could only dream to have the same ...

Two great views of the Paris skyline.

On this one you can see the Montparnasse Tower on the left, the Eiffel Tower in the center (with the golden dome of the Invalides and the white dome of the Panthéon next to it), and La Défense on the right.
http://static.flickr.com/104/289151343_3b1eb4fa16_b.jpg

On this one you can see the skyscrapers of La Défense behind the big forest, and in the background is Central Paris with the Eiffel Tower appearing on the horizon behind La Défense.

Good point Minato. Paris without La Defense is a different skyline. However it is different not inferior. it still has tour Eiffel, arguably the most iconic structure on earth, The Invalides Dome shining in the sun, Sacre Coeur the butte ( Not my favourite ecclesiastical building by any means but mega popular ), Tour montparnasse etc and of course it has the forest of roofs, les toits de Paris whose imagery are loved worldwide.

Without La defense it is an 8 for its tall mega icons and a 10 - obviously - for its overall aesthetic impact.

It is near the Peripherique I can't creat a new thread for this skyline (only 2 towers include in the skyline of the 20th arrondissement of Paris). :ohno:
Inner suburbs of Paris are Paris
La Defense is big it is different.
Creteil is at about at 10 km of the peripherique I can create a thread for this city.

Surely you mean you can't see too many skyscrapers? That is not the same as not seeing a skyline.

Invalides, Tour eiffel, Sacre Coeur, Notre dame etc, the forest of famous gray rooftops etc. You see one of the most attractive skylines on earth with the addition of the densest cluster of skyscrapers in europe in a near suburb though not admittedly clustered with towers within Paris proper.

How is it possible to say you don't see a skyline when it it possible to look over the seine, Les champs,, Les Invalides, the roofs, L'Arc de triomphe and on to Europe's densest 'scraper cluster in the distance? It is an umatched meeting of Monumental sumptuous traditional european cityscape and modern office development. I simply don't understand.

In this pic I can see a skyline (O.K the height of those building are only between 200 and 100 meters and high-rises are a bit ugly) but it is a skyline.

Paris has actualy 30 high rise above 100 meters and more than 60 above 90 meters it is not very big for skyscrapers for other people it is not skyscrapers but These buildings can make a skyline especally in european cities and I agree with tigerboy.

Minato I count 34 completed 100 Metre towers in la Defense alone including 11 of 150 metres or more ( total, Areva, Gan, Les Soc. gen., EDF, Coeur, AXA, Adria, Egee et Ariane ). Clearly this does not include the buildongs in the 13eme and 15eme or Montparnasse. To put it in perspective Frankfurt CBD also has 11 and toronto often seen as third only to the giants of CHicago and NY in North America has only 15.

Admittedly LD lacks supertalls but this is PARIS. She doesn't need some trophy supertall and I am not being defensive since paris does not need defence. I'm simply stating the truth that LD's cluster with the addition of montparnasse and Eiffel as an icon would be a good skyline anywhere in North America apart from the obvious 2 behemoths and is top 3 in Europe.

Our friend Brando has every right to suggest he sees no skyline but it simply isn't so.

^^ With such crappy photos...No wonder Paris gets loads of 1/10's :ohno:I agree with this. These pictures are all about the 13th, 19th and 20th arrondissements, or even about the Eastern suburbs. Judging Paris skyline from this is a bit similar as judging NYC skyline with pictures about Harlem and the Queens.

Minato Ku is right when he says that it is the truth and it shouldn't be hidden, but it's not all the truth. Many French forumers hate the pictures of the banks of the Seine because it's touristic, but they still represent more the image I have of what I call the "Paris skyline" than do pictures of the 20th arrondissement or Bagnolet.

Anyway, I always considered it was silly to make two threads: one only for La Défense and the other for all the rest of the Paris region. This is silly. NYC has only one thread, not one for Midtown and another for Downtown.

I've already told it numerous times on this thread, and I maintain it... both threads should get merged. It is pointless to make such a separation considering that some of the most beautiful pictures of La Défense skyline are taken from Paris historical center... which is only at a couple kilometers.

No matter what people think or what they may dream about, they still have to make a living...

Hence, this discussion seems to me totally unsignificant. You could raze La Défense, it wouldn't change a thing about Paris being a dynamic business center.

Paris Creteil (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=406890) Interesting skyline in inner suburbs

In fact la Defense is not located municipality of Paris but it is located in the city of Paris
The city is bigger than the municipalty of Paris.

Paris
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/1006/coreofparisdccb4.jpg

limite de departement : departments border
Ceinture vert : green belt
Parc naturel regional : Regional natural reserve
Coeur d'agglomeration : core of urban area (the real size of the of Paris or Greater Paris)
agglomeration central : the rest of urban area (real suburbs)
autres agglomerations : other urban areas (include in Metro area)
espace rural : rural area
La Defense
Creteil

Urban area : 10.1 million inhabitants
City or core of urban area : 6.7 million inhabitants (It is officially not existing :ohno: )
Municipalty of Paris : 2.1 million inhabitants

but like London, Paris has several threads for its several skylines
Paris la Defense
Paris outside la Defense
Paris Creteil, Municipality located at the limit of the core of urban area.

This has to be the best view of the Paris skyline that I have seen in a long long time. It was found
by French forumer JP on Earthworm.

From left to right you can see the Pleyel Tower among the immigrant ghettos of the northern Paris
suburbs, then Montmartre Hill with the Sacré Coeur basilica on top, then the Montparnasse Tower
and the Eiffel Tower in central Paris, then La Défense skyscraper business district.

Remarkable. Truly remarkable. You are of course entitled to your view but to give paris 3 out of 10 for anything is...well I'm speechless. It's skyline has the densest cluster of scrapers in Europe, the gothic splendour of notre Dame, the baroque beauty of les Invalides, the whimsy of sacre coeur, the duality of the old Arc de triomphe and the new Grande Arche, the unique Tour eiffel which is the most iconic tall structure on earth, the forest of roofs which are so beguiling.

As I say by all means have your own view but 3 for Paris, the queen of cities, in any poll about anything is lese-majeste

TBH I'm just bumping Paris from page 5. Having the city of Light off the first page is lese-majesty.

Her Majesty the Queen of cities should never ever be loitering on page 5 of anything.Frankly, the Paris skyline (as in skyscrapers) is actually La Défense.
The highrise buildings in central Paris are predominantly 70's residential blocks which aren't especially wonderful to look at.
Though I agree this is only my opinion.

The nicest central Paris skyline would be the one from around the Ile de la Cité, which is pictured on this famous pano:

The big skyline is in La Defense, La Defense is located in three municipality of the inner suburbs of Paris : Puteaux Courbevoie and Nanterre.
Actually inner suburbs are not suburbs just the dense extention of inner Paris.
So the real size of the city of Paris : inner Paris + inner suburbs

The real suburban areas are in the oulter suburbs.

Oups there's a vote

8/10

Paris skyline is interesting, less dramatic than other cities because of the high average height of the inner blocks and the relative squareness of its tall buildings. The very centre of the city is hopefully punctuated by lovely spires and domes and by the Eiffel tower that we all like!

Take away the Eiffel tower and the skyline is far less interesting. This magnificent structure gives Paris skyline its final mega twist !

Looking at the panoramic shots, it is interesting to note that all the tall buildings seem to be on the fringe of the city, where as in North America they are all in the centre. On a similar tune, it is also interesting to know that even the Parisian ghettos are in usually in the fringes, where as North American ghettos are more often than not within the inner city.

Anyways, great shots of Paris, not much of a skyline though. Combined with La Defence, Paris overall gets a 7.5/10. It would be foolish to separate the two as Paris itself has no skyline to speak of.

Paris intramuros has no "skyscraper skyline" to speak of but it does have one of the most instantly recognisable and beautiful skylines on earth. Sacre Coeur, Notre dame. Les Invalides, the grey roofs, tour Eiffel, Arc de Triomphe etc are instantly known skyline landmarks.

The thing is that Paris is huge, so the dense and urban central core is very big, but there's also a huge part of the urban area that is more sprawled and nothing like what is shown here.
