Nandan Water Park:

it has opened recently. Some of the construction still going on. Dhaka has two amusement parks. The best one is called Fantasy Kingdom and the other one Nandan water park. I shall post pics of Fantasy kingdom later.

The new and novel facility at the Nandan Park offers seven new attractions, but each with a different look. Whereas there only used to be a danger of getting wet, Water World intends to drench you through and through. Each section of the ride is essentially complemented with its own small pool, or in some cases consists of just such a pool. However, swimming in the real sense is not possible in pools as shallow as four feet under. Most of the rest are good only for wading. Because of the nature of the attractions, the authorities recommend that visitors bring a change of clothes and a towel. For those who forget, the park has facilities for renting swimming attire. The dress code states that, for women, swimsuits are not allowed. Any ‘decent’ substitute is acceptable (so no women in bikinis running in slow motion). As for men, I assume that because nothing specific was stated, that anything but a birthday suit is acceptable (think Jockey ®, the next best thing). I was particularly indignant about having to wear a shirt. There are two sets of changing rooms and bathrooms on the premises complete with facilities for taking showers. There are also lockers available, the keys to which can be conveniently worn on the wrist with an elastic band. Special arrangements have also been thoughtfully made for women not wishing to use the same pools as the men. Some of the rides have separate areas for men and women. Of course, this is entirely optional on the women’s part; those wishing to take part in the un-segregated are welcome to do so.

The first ride on our list was the wave pool. This is an entirely new concept in Bangladesh, but one that is in use extensively overseas. Basically, the set-up consists of a large, arc shaped pool, with the deepest end at one of the corners. As the name suggests, the pool makes artificial waves, which emanate from the deep end. Visitors can simply wade and swim around, or float on one of the many yellow air-pumped tubes. And it can be just as much fun dislodging others from their tubes (as many of our group found out). According to the park authorities, about 200 hundred people can fit into the pool at one time. But, in my opinion, it would not be much of a cooling, splashing experience amidst such a crowd. The waves in the pool are strongest at the deep end, so anyone looking for a thrill should start there. The waves will be in motion for twenty minutes, before being shut down for forty minutes.

Next on the fun-list was the ‘Tube Slide’; this is a large winding waterslide, which ends in a small pool at the bottom. In the same complex is the ‘Family Slide’, which is similar but reserved for women and children. Starting from two storeys up, visitors sit on the inner-tube rafts and are given a gentle shove over the edge. From there, the flowing water carries the raft down through the tight curves, to a soft landing. By itself, this slide is rather tame, but it can be made slightly more interesting. Swaying on the rafts will cause a much more erratic, and in some cases, faster slide. The double rafts enable multiple persons to slide at a time, once again, with the option of increasing the speed. It is very similar to the older water slide in Nandan Park itself, with the difference that this one ends in a pool of water. This is definitely one of the park’s highlights.

Adjacent to the ‘Tube Slide’, is the ‘Wave Runner’. The ‘Wave Runner’ is in essence just another slide, but one that trades winding curves for speed. There are two slides next to one another; both travel straight down to the small pool at the bottom. A lot faster than the other slides, the ‘Wave Runner’ requires one to be slightly more careful about allowing hands or feet touching the sides. Rubber mats are normally used for sliders; there are two different types, one allowing the feet first and the other the head first. The more adventurous may decide to leave the mats behind and go down without their aid. It is recommended that they also should not be wearing any shirts (just the excuse I needed to take off mine). The trip is significantly faster without the mat, and the water dispels any friction between you and the slide, making for a painless trip. I recommend that this method be tried at least once. My only qualm about the slide is that my haunches kept hitting the bottom of the pool; deeper water would have been a good idea.

We then proceeded to the ‘Water Fun Plaza’. Now this is not a ride in the strictest sense of the word, it is more of a small water playground. This is meant for children, but as my counterparts and I proved, there is much to be had here by those capable of acting like children. A few very small slides and tire swings make up the major part of this installation, along with water being spurted out from various angles. Adults are allowed on this area, but only to accompany kids. Even so, they won’t be able to do much on the equipment, as one of my group found out after getting stuck on one of the slides.

I couldn’t really understand what the ‘Water Fun and Mist’ was actually supposed to be. Let me describe it: There is a pool of ankle deep water with rails on two sides and a wall at one end. The rails have sprays that emit a fine mist, and the ledge on the wall has water coming over it. So, effectively, people walk into the pool, get engulfed by the mist, maybe stand under the waterfall, and then walk out. Explanations are welcome… please.

Lastly, there was the ‘Doom Slide’. When I read about this on the information sheet, I was psyched. Finally, something that would provide the cheap thrills that we all yearn for! Sadly, it ended up being a sardonic mockery of its name. It is just a dome in the middle of a pool of water; visitors climb to the top of the dome (which is about two and a half metres high) and slide down. That’s it. Nothing more. The ‘doom’ part in the name comes into play during the landing; if you miss the foam at the bottom, and it happens more often than not, then the shallow water won’t provide much of a cushion for your legs. Be afraid… be very afraid.

The system for entry fees is an interesting one. Tk.50 is required for admission into Nandan Park, and another Tk.250 for entry into Water World. The criteria for these entry fees are height; over 120cm is Tk.250, under 120cm Tk.200; and under 80cm it is free. I guess the logic behind this is that a larger number of smaller people can be made to fit into the rides at the same time. There are no more charges after the entry; one can go on as many rides as desired, and stay for as long as they want. A food court will be opened inside Water World soon, until then there are still the places in Nandan Park for a bite or two.

Water World is situated in the rear area of the sprawling Nandan Park complex; those who had taken rides on the cable cars will probably have noticed the construction sites. It is located on the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway, between Chandra town and BKSP. A trip from Dhaka will normally take about an hour, give or take twenty minutes depending on traffic. BRTC buses travel to the park via Farmgate and Shyamoli, while Ababil buses go through Moghbazar and Mohakhali.

The authorities promised me that the Water World experience was even better at night; some other day I suppose. Despite the distance from Dhaka, Nandan Park is definitely a place that you’d want to be this summer. My advice is to go in the early part of the days, when crowding will be less. In all, in spite of the long drive, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Bangla like Hindi has many dialects and regional flavors. Sylheti is a dialect of Bangla spoken in Sylhet district.

Fantasy Kingdom is Dhaka's best amusement theme park. It has quickly become very popular among the local people. Here's a few images. Enjoy!
If you go to the actual website and click on joyride, you can view all the rides. I wasn't able to post those images. It is worth checking it out.

Shaz, funny as it may sound but Dhaka has 4 different theme parks. I am not sure if we need that many theme parks. Fantasy Kingdom is the most famous one. Nandan Water Park, Concord Water World and Wonderland are also quite popular. Chittagong and Sylhet both have one theme park in those cities. The city of Rajshahi is constructing one as well.

CONCORD WATER KINGDOM

Water Kingdom, your watery getaway

Dhaka residents now have a great opportunity of getting rid of the monotony of city life by visiting the Water Kingdom at Ashulia.

The park was inaugurated through the opening of an impressive virtual aquarium tunnel from Fantasy Kingdom to the Water Kingdom. In total twelve adventures rides -- wave pools, slide world, family pool, tube slides, multi slide, lazy river, waterfall, doom slide, lost kingdom, neptune hideout, play zone and dancing zone are on offer at the Water Kingdom for a Tk 260 ticket.

Special programmes including band shows by popular groups like LRB, Shaptak, fashion shows, karaoke and fire works were arranged to mark the opening ceremony.

Experts from Canada, Australia, Thailand and the United States had worked for the last eight months to set up the Water Kingdom. According to sources, Tk 84 crore have been spent on the park.

Water Kingdom is open from 11am to 9pm everyday. Special programmes including cultural shows will be arranged every Friday, said park authorities.

Separate changing rooms and toilets for the male and female and lockers are available at the park. Anyone can rent swimming costumes and towels also.

A number of bus operators of the city like Manjil Paribahan, Ababil and Hanif are providing passenger service to and from Water Kingdom. Interested people can take these buses from Motijheel, Moghbazar, Mohakhali, Shahbag and Asad Gate.

Concord Heritage Park

The Concord Group has set up a Heritage Park at Ashulia in Savar where they installed replicas of a number of architectural and archaeological sights of the country to attract visitors to the Park.

In the Heritage Park the Concord group has installed replicas of eight architectural heritage sites— Jatiya Sangsad Complex, Chunakhola Mosque in Bagerhat, Ahsan Manzil, Kantajir Temple, Paharpur Monastery in Rajshahi, Savar Memorial, Shat Gambuj Mosque in Bagerhat, Putia Rajbari in Natore, Darbar Hall in Lalbagh Kella, Greek Memorial in TSC of Dhaka University and Sitakot Bihara.

Replica of Central Shaheed Minar, World Heritage Sundarban in Bagerhat, Saint Nicolas Temple in Gazipur and Buddhist Pagoda in Coxs Bazar.

Construction of a heritage museum and gallery have recently been completed. Park is a mini heritage museum with traditional and heritage resources of all kinds, including the indigenous people. A mini artisan village would be set up inside the Park to project the tradition and life of rural Bangladesh.

Apart from replica installations, the park has 10 different rides to entertain both children and adults, be it a family Roller Coaster or Mini Pirate ship, people would enjoy the excitement, the management believed. Paddle cycle boats, Igloo theme (mini flume), waterfall (him chori), family train, family swing, battery cars, teacup swing and dry slides are the others. The Park also has restaurants and food kiosks, shops, VIP lounge and a photo gallery.

The Park has been set up on 20 Bigha of land just beside the Fantasy Kingdom theme park at a cost of Tk 28 crore.

Well Chris, it's not about being Muslim, it's cultural, and you will see women wearing much the same clothing anywhere else in South Asia. Every culture has its standards of modesty - and that applies to both men and women. The fact that Bangladesh IS mostly Muslim, and you see women enjoying themselves at a waterpark, should tell you something of the generally tolerant nature of the society. Thus far Bangladesh has had waterparks for maybe one or two years, and only miniscule fraction of the populace has access to them. Social change does not happen overnight, but as the country modernises, women will undoubtedly gain more advantages, swimwear included, but maybe not a carbon copy of western styles.

Time for recreation on wheels

Amusement-starved Dhaka city dwellers are going to experience a new innovation soon that may offer them an opportunity to forget life's monotony for a while.

Soon a mobile amusement park called 'Ananda Ghurni' will hit the City Club Ground in Mirpur's Pallabi.

Ananda Ghurni is the first recreational facility on wheels in the country. It is arriving in Dhaka for one and a half months after winning the hearts of people in Cox's Bazaar and Narayanganj.

The Ananda Ghurni can be transported to different areas of the country as it is a totally portable.

Such mobile parks are very popular in India. Some Indian parks have even made the long journey to the Middle East on trucks and lorries.

The Ananda Ghurni offers various attractions for children and adults and boasts some international standard rides like Ranger, Dragon Coaster, Swing Chair and Beach Buggy.

Every item at the park guarantees enjoyment and adventure according to people who have visited Ananda Ghurni.

After its time in Dhaka, the Ananada Ghurni will head back to Cox's Bazaar to catch the start of the tourist season.

Rafiqul Islam, managing director of Neptune Mobile Amusement Park, informed that Ananda Ghurni was first opened in Cox's Bazaar earlier this year and was an instant hit.

People poured in when it was in Narayangang and Islam was very much hopeful that Dhaka dwellers will also love it.

"Our plan is to reach all the 64 districts of the country with this mobile park. Only a 400x400 feet space is enough to set up the Ananada Ghurni. So our goal to roam the county is certainly attainable," Islam added.

He also said that a second unit of the mobile amusement park would be launched soon.

Meanwhile, Mirpur residents who have heard of Ananada Ghurni, are eagerly waiting in anticipation.

"In Mirpur we are totally deprived of recreational facilities. The arrival of the mobile park is a welcoming news for us," said Abu Kaoser Chowdhury.

"I managed to visit the Ananda Ghurni when it was in Narayanganj. I enjoyed it so much that I do not want to miss it for anything when it is in Dhaka," said Ripa who lives in Azimpur.

Ticket prices of different rides vary from Tk 10 to 30 and entry fee to the park is Tk 20.

The Ananda Ghurni will remain open from 3pm to 9pm on weekdays and from 10am to 10pm on holidays at the City Club Ground.

Ya i have. The tracks are ok, pretty basic in design though. And most of the carts were out of order or poorly maintianed when i was there. Nonetheless it was still a lot of fun as your allowed to do a bit more in those tracks than the ones here in North America.

I dont think the rides are changed...I went there a few years back, just to have a look, but was disappointed. The whole thing has become very old-fashioned as not changed so much. I understood how much change I was through then, bcause the same place seemed amazing 15-20 years back! People prefer water kingdom/fantasy kingdom or Nandan these days.
Hey I visited the water kingdom/fantasy kingdom a few days back, hope to post some pics soon...

Nice pics Tareq. You really have an eye for good photos.

When I lived in Dhaka, the only amusement park there was Shishu Park - things have come a long way since then! Now I live about 8 hours drive from Orlando, so I go to the theme parks there once in a while when I get the chance. More so than the rides themselves, I am interested in the art of theming such parks, especially the better Disney ones.

If you go by the sign...must be the world's smallest amusement park ;) That spiral staircase must be one of the attractions :D

My best guess - proposed site for an amusement park. ...or .... maybe its the chacha mia's personal amusement park.

^^ Actually I would probably be more scared walking down that flimsy spiral staircase than riding some roller coasters (it has no support except some flimsy netting!...a true engineering marvel) :D

Addendum - just noticed the patriotic colors of this great amusement park. Maybe Tmac will find some interior shots of this facility sometime...it's a pity he didn't stop by on his recent trip.

I am amazed at every particular of this 'Century Amusement Park' thing...
the location (looks like a river not a lake or something), the color (thank god i'm color blind!), the signboard (how come this is in Gulshan, Dhaka! I've been hanging around here for decades but never seen anything like this), the staircase (where are those people who make 'Xtreme Engineering' or 'Megastructures' etc. for Nat Geo/Discovery).

Go-Kart gets underway

On November 13, 2009, the Grand Opening ceremony of 'XTreme Racing Go-Kart' ride took place at the Fantasy Kingdom Complex, says a press release. The ceremony was inaugurated by S. M. Kamal Uddin, chairman of Concord Group.

In his opening speech S. M. Kamal Uddin said, “Earlier in Bangladesh, tourism was not accepted as an industry or art. Additionally, it was not emphasised by the government; neither was any realistic step taken to establish the idea that family entertainment related projects could be a major area of the tourism sector.” He noted that existing projects had been facing various kinds of obstacles.

An important component of tourism is entertainment related projects.

Concord is the first business group to bring family entertainment to Bangladesh by establishing Fantasy Kingdom. Another enterprise, Heritage Park, was established in 2005. After that, Concord went for other projects. Now, Concord has launched the super fast ride “Xtreme Racing Go-Kart” in Bangladesh.

"These are the true racing karts which are used in seven-time champion of Formula One Michel Schumacher's go-kart institute to train the racers. We have brought these to give visitors the experience of riding international-standard go-karts," said M. Mahfuzur Rahman, Deputy Manager, Concord Entertainment Co Ltd.

The go-kart racing cars have been imported from US and France. The go-karts brought from US have both single and double seating arrangements. The carts with double sitting arrangement allow the riders to share their excitement with a member of their family.

Go-karts brought from France have single sitting arrangement. These racing cars are most suitable for young people.

For safety issue of participants, all instructions are provided in racing car manual. Seat belts ensure the protection while driving go-kart. Centralised control system assures drivers protection.

"There are efficient trainers in the park to train visitors to drive the go-karts.

There are hand gloves, knee pads, racing boots and racing jackets needed to drive the carts. You will find it very easy to drive go-karts," he said.

Paintball hits the capital

Xtreme Paintball, a new game park recently launched at Panthapath, is anticipating a rush of customers in the near future.

According to the park's staff, the lack of knowledge of city dwellers about paintball was the main reason for the limited turn out of visitors at present.

"Most of our regular customers are foreigners who reside in areas like Banani, Gulshan, and Baridhara and are already familiar with the game," said the manager of the game park which was launched on December 8 last year.

The park which is spread over a 2.5 bigha land opposite to the Bashundhara City has a restaurant near the entrance and the main battleground at the back.

A player has to change into pyjamas and wear a helmet. Then equipped with toy guns, vests, markers, mask and coloured paintballs as bullets, he has to shoot at the opponent. Each magazine has 15 bullets. The shooter scores as soon as the ball hits the opponent who is marked 'out'.

'Capture the Flag' has proved the most popular game at the park so far. Two teams are divided in equal numbers and as soon as the referee gives his signal, the game begins with both teams advancing toward each other and at the same time trying to mark the other with the paintballs.

As soon as somebody gets hit, he has to return to the designated base and restart from there. The first team to get hold of the flag, fixed at the centre of the battleground, and reach the opponent's base wins the game.

"Even though the universal rule for paintball is 'shot and you are out', the players can modify rules and play according to their own wishes here," said Sarf Emdad, owner of Xtreme Paintball.

Emdad, who grew up in the United States wanted to spread the paintball craze in Dhaka and also dreamt of creating a place where young people of the city could hang out during their free time. With that concept in mind he initiated Xtreme Paintball.

In order to provide a high degree of satisfaction to the customers, Emdad imported all the apparatus and equipment from Hong Kong. The park is also affiliated with the Asian Paintball Incorporated.

The rates for playing games are affordable and those who are not in the mood for paintball, can simply enjoy a quick snack at the restaurant, play badminton or watch sports on the big screen projector at the park.

"There are clubs in Dhaka for the adults but the teenagers and youths have always complained about the scarcity of spots where they can enjoy themselves. But people of all ages can come here," said Emdad.

The strategic features of the sport, which enhances teamwork, self-confidence, leadership abilities and other such qualities in players, has made it a favorite pastime for business organisations world over.

"We have already had the staff of the British American Tobacco Bangladesh try out the game and they actually loved it," said the owner.

Emdad is also expecting a similar kind of response from other business houses and also hopes to attract the general public.

^^I can't help but comment on the picture in the article. They are only wearing a jacket which covers the chest instead of a full suit (which is understandable due to the temperature) but how come they aren't wearing helmets? If they are using similar bullets used here in UK then it can cause permenant skin damage especially from the range they are shooting each other at. Has anyone here actually participated in Xtreme Paintball? It looks very unsafe to me. I think the only way paintball can be co-ordinated in Bangladesh is if it is indoors, air-conditioned and done with full safety equipment.
