View Full Version : Dinner Wednesday the 9th
mcarling January 31st, 2011, 04:32 PM In August, ddes, deskoh91, mdzulkar9, Simon91, and I met for dinner at Maxwell. I think it's fair to say that we all had a great time. I propose that we do it again next Wednesday, the 9th, again at 19:00.
Please reply in the thread if you can attend.
Updated to Lau Pa Sat.
mdzulkar9 January 31st, 2011, 04:57 PM 9th's actually my birthday and i have a presentation that week. haha. sounds pathetic, right? lol
Aranho January 31st, 2011, 05:20 PM Poly ends at noon on CNY eve, so should be able to make it. :)
I guess I'll be the quietest in the group. XD
mcarling January 31st, 2011, 06:29 PM Happy birthday mdzulkar9!
y2koh February 1st, 2011, 02:19 AM Poly ends at noon on CNY eve, so should be able to make it. :)
I guess I'll be the quietest in the group. XD
I think you mixed up the dates. It's one week after CNY eve. Anyway, I should be able to attend this time round, but again really depends on exigencies of work, nowadays for health reasons I try to leave office earlier than 7pm.
deskoh91 February 1st, 2011, 05:15 AM would you guys be equally fine with it being a day later or so (10th?) because I have a presentation the very next day.
of course if the majority is fine I will just try my best to make it. I just hope the preparations for that presentation do not overrun..
mdzulkar9 February 1st, 2011, 05:33 AM Happy birthday mdzulkar9!
thank you. hahah and all is forgotten. :D
mcarling February 1st, 2011, 05:44 AM I should be able to attend this time round....
Excellent!
would you guys be equally fine with it being a day later or so (10th?).
I'm just on winter break from my studies in Vienna and I'm leaving on the 10th.
ddes February 1st, 2011, 08:43 AM 9th's actually my birthday and i have a presentation that week. haha. sounds pathetic, right? lol
3 days before mine?!
Seloloving February 1st, 2011, 10:19 AM I just realized many people have a 9 in their names...
deskoh91 February 1st, 2011, 11:19 AM Guess we have to settle for 9th then. I will try my best to attend. Will update mcarling via cell.
P.S. My birthday is 7th Febuary.
Mith252 February 1st, 2011, 12:48 PM Would love to go but seriously quite busy. Just gone for attachment so a lot of things to do. Maybe next time. :)
mdzulkar9 February 1st, 2011, 03:06 PM OMG SO MANY BIRTHDAYS! LETS GO TO A BAR HAHAH SINCE TANJONG PAGAR IS A HOTSPOT FOR BARS LOLOL.
y2koh February 1st, 2011, 03:47 PM woot!
BeNdYBuSLuver February 1st, 2011, 05:49 PM I'm too new here I guess? lols.. depends if i can make it :(
Aranho February 1st, 2011, 05:54 PM I think you mixed up the dates. It's one week after CNY eve. Anyway, I should be able to attend this time round, but again really depends on exigencies of work, nowadays for health reasons I try to leave office earlier than 7pm.
Whoops. Missed out the 9th part. Paiseh, paiseh.
And if bar is included, count me out cuz I don't drink alcohol, plus I'm under 18.
mcarling February 2nd, 2011, 01:36 AM We have several under-18s, so a bar is probably not the best venue for us.
Simon91 February 2nd, 2011, 06:31 AM I should be able to make it, but will confirm with you all closer the day. :)
BeNdYBuSLuver February 2nd, 2011, 08:49 PM Coffeeshops or Hawker Centre is way good enough though ^^
TIB1224Y February 3rd, 2011, 11:24 AM I will be able to make it if there is nights out for my base that day.
deskoh91 February 3rd, 2011, 01:10 PM Are there larger tables at Maxwell? It seems appropriate enough last time, doubt there will be any problem if we go with that again?
P.S. The chicken rice is nice.
mcarling February 3rd, 2011, 01:42 PM I think all the tables at Maxwell are 6-tops.
tangwk February 3rd, 2011, 03:00 PM I know I'm not that active here in this forum, but you guys don't mind if I join right?? I hope I can know more people who have the same interest in SG's public transport. :)
Who's the organiser btw??
Aranho February 3rd, 2011, 03:35 PM If at Maxwell again, maybe we can drop by the Singapore City Gallery before dinner or after, if it's still open. :P
y2koh February 3rd, 2011, 06:07 PM Unfortunately it closes at 5pm
http://www.ura.gov.sg/contactus/contactus(add).htm
Aranho February 3rd, 2011, 06:36 PM Sad, but expected it.
AzMean February 4th, 2011, 01:21 AM hmmm.. any door gifts? haha! kidding lah.
deskoh91 February 4th, 2011, 05:29 AM I know I'm not that active here in this forum, but you guys don't mind if I join right?? I hope I can know more people who have the same interest in SG's public transport. :)
Who's the organiser btw??
join us if you wish, no worries. I dont think we have an official organizer, though if we are looking at a lot more people this time maybe it will be good if there is a contact person?
hmmm.. any door gifts? haha! kidding lah.
I think it will be good if we keep it casual and cosy, just chats and discussions like last time. so I think we should avoid all the hassles of planning as far as possible. but thats my opinion of course :)
deskoh91 February 8th, 2011, 11:50 AM So how is the dinner going tomorrow? If Maxwell tables are too small, how about we top up a little and go to some lower-cost restaurants with larger ones?
mcarling February 8th, 2011, 12:18 PM So how is the dinner going tomorrow? If Maxwell tables are too small, how about we top up a little and go to some lower-cost restaurants with larger ones?
8 persons have indicated that they will or may be attending:
Aranho
BeNdYBuSLuver
deskoh91
mcarling
Simon91
tangwk
TIB1224Y
y2koh
Perhaps we should choose someplace with larger tables. Lau Pa Sat would work, but that's a bit of a tourist trap. Any other specific suggestions?
Is anyone else planning to attend?
ddes February 8th, 2011, 12:26 PM The earliest I'll make it is between 8 and 8.30pm. And I'd need to eat when I come... So the question I'll have to ask will be... what time issit?
mcarling February 8th, 2011, 12:40 PM The earliest I'll make it is between 8 and 8.30pm. And I'd need to eat when I come... So the question I'll have to ask will be... what time issit?
The plan was to arrive at 7:00pm. One nice thing about meeting at a hawker centre is that latecomers can easily get food without waiting a long time. It now looks like we'll be nine, so Maxwell doesn't seem like a good choice this time. Any objections to Lau Pa Sat?
Simon91 February 8th, 2011, 12:53 PM I'm ok with anything as long as there's nice food there. :)
運転士 February 8th, 2011, 12:58 PM I may be coming along, depending my schedule.
y2koh February 8th, 2011, 01:01 PM Lau pa sat is still okay, there are some stalls that sells cheaper food too so not to worry.
deskoh91 February 8th, 2011, 05:26 PM if Lau Pa Sat has huge tables I am all for it. I think its best we get everyone on one table so everyone can know each other :)
BeNdYBuSLuver February 8th, 2011, 05:30 PM Deleted
mcarling February 9th, 2011, 02:52 AM There were no objections to Lau Pa Sat, so I've updated the first post. We should get to see and hear DTL1 construction just outside.
Look for three tables pushed together in a triangular formation.
Seloloving February 9th, 2011, 06:24 AM Happy Birthday, mdzulkar9! Have fun with your presentations! :D
mrtfreak February 9th, 2011, 04:36 PM Blessed birthday Mdzulkar9. :)
mdzulkar9 February 9th, 2011, 05:35 PM thanks mrtfreak and selo! (Y)
y2koh February 9th, 2011, 05:50 PM Happy belated birthday mdzulkar9!
Aranho February 9th, 2011, 07:14 PM Sorry I couldn't attend yesterday's gathering. Just realise it when I reached home from TP at around 6pm and had a few sleepless nights due to project.
So how was the gathering?
y2koh February 10th, 2011, 04:43 AM It was a nice meeting, we talked about lots of stuff, except transport.
Nice meeting everyone, hope more of us can make it the next time.
Seloloving February 10th, 2011, 04:55 AM ^^ who were there eventually?
y2koh February 10th, 2011, 10:53 AM deskoh91, ddes, mcarling, Simon91, TIB1224Y, 運転士 and y2koh were there. Hope I got it right :)
mcarling February 10th, 2011, 11:20 AM ^^
Yes, that's whom I remember.
Seloloving February 10th, 2011, 12:32 PM ^^ I see... I wonder why the birthday boy did not turn up.
mdzulkar9 February 10th, 2011, 02:58 PM ^^ I see... I wonder why the birthday boy did not turn up.
He was still in school slaving over project. Safe to say, everything went smoothly
BeNdYBuSLuver February 10th, 2011, 04:34 PM Hello Everyone!
Apologies If I can't make it for the dinner, due to some family matters at home :( :(
But Im glad that you guys enjoy yourselves during the dinner
^^^^
y2koh February 10th, 2011, 04:40 PM He was still in school slaving over project. Safe to say, everything went smoothly
Congrats!!! That's really good! When I was in school, I hardly ever had a crit that went smoothly.
Seloloving February 10th, 2011, 04:47 PM ^^ You guys just made me fear Poly more.
y2koh February 10th, 2011, 05:18 PM You may have to spend sleepless night in school to rush out your presentations, and stand in front of a critique panel and get interrogated, but I'm sure other's school life will not be as interesting and memorable as yours.
Seloloving February 10th, 2011, 06:48 PM Sorry - what is this "critique panel"? I have never heard of it despite over ten Poly talks last year.
deskoh91 February 11th, 2011, 01:24 AM ^^ probably like a panel of judges/lecturers who will give comments and ask questions on your work and presentation?
we went to check out the Downtown station works as well. pity we did not pop by Marina Bay.
Seloloving February 11th, 2011, 06:28 AM ...seriously? The Poly people who came to talk have never mentioned that. o_0
y2koh February 11th, 2011, 07:20 AM Hmm... I never knew that there were crits either, until we had our first crit. At that time there wasn't even American Idol, so we really had no idea what it was like until the day itself. I'm not too sure whether your course will have something like that, but I'm very sure all interior and product design courses, and architectural technology in SP have it. But now it's easier to explain, it's like American Idol, but if you've done your work you'll get by, just hope that there's no Simon Cowell in the panel.
Seloloving February 11th, 2011, 07:35 AM ^^ Simon Cowell is sort of like a figure and any British/American show that has a judging panel without Simon Cowell rarely makes a good record. The latest season of Britain's Got Talent is already failing without him (at least he will be back in the live shows...) Many doubt that the latest season of American Idol would succeed without him.
(Speaking of BGT...it looks like Amanda Holden of the judging panel had a tragic miscarriage few days ago. They are already saying that it will be hard to edit the show before it's shown on TV due to too much of the footage showing her "pregnant and happy". But that is out of the topic.)
Anyway, these "crits" sound really scary. I wonder if they will have buzzers and "X"s.

y2koh February 11th, 2011, 08:23 AM As I said, if you do your work it'll be okay, there are no buzzers, but they'll be very honest, think positively, they are there to help you sharpen your work.
Btw, confirm that the building next to Sheares Ave (near Marina Bay Sands) is an 230kV electrical substation (similar to the CTE/Kampong Java one).
http://www.mof.gov.sg/budget_2010/expenditure_overview/mnd.html
"The ongoing construction of the various phases of the Common Services Tunnels is scheduled to be completed by 2012. The sewer works in the Marina South and Central subzones are scheduled to be completed by 2010 while the construction of the 230KV electrical substation is scheduled to be completed by 2011. The implementation of these key infrastructure works will ensure the timely provision of utilities supply to the developments in the area and cater for future demand and growth."
y2koh February 11th, 2011, 08:28 AM Here's a few more juicy information around the area we went to visit. These were the tender documents for the Asia Square site.
http://www.ura.gov.sg/sales/MarinaViewLPB/tender%20docs/MVB-LPnCP.pdf
http://www.ura.gov.sg/sales/MarinaView/tender%20docs/LPnCP%20combined.pdf
You can see the proposed network of underground connections in the pdf files.
Mith252 February 11th, 2011, 12:02 PM ^^ Great info, but I think you should post this in the threads for Asia Square and NeW Downtown as it is related to that. :)
mdzulkar9 February 12th, 2011, 04:06 AM You may have to spend sleepless night in school to rush out your presentations, and stand in front of a critique panel and get interrogated, but I'm sure other's school life will not be as interesting and memorable as yours.
LOLOL The eternal paradox of poly
SOCIAL LIFE - SLEEP - GRADES
you can only pick two.
Mith252 February 12th, 2011, 04:08 AM ^^ If you go uni, it will continue as well.
Seloloving February 12th, 2011, 04:09 AM ^^ I don't have that much of a social life...the last time I actually step onto Orchard Road was years ago.
Mostly, I take the MRT from Tai Seng and return to Tai Seng to get home. (Bartley before Tai Seng opened.
http://i55.************/211rtj7.jpg
...I love buzzing.
Aranho February 13th, 2011, 07:04 AM JC is worse. If you don't mug, get ready to waste another year.
LOLOL The eternal paradox of poly
SOCIAL LIFE - SLEEP - GRADES
you can only pick two.
I pick all three:
Social life, your "friends" in your course.
Sleep, call that power nap. Just prepare two alarm clocks or more.
Grades, mug all the way. But in my case, hand pain all the way.
y2koh February 13th, 2011, 07:23 AM Yup, I probably spent more time with my coursemates than my girlfriend. I know more about them than my girlfriend! I knew whether they brush their teeth, how long they can survive without bathing, or sleeping. Whether they snore, etc. And l gained the power to sleep anytime I wish - when my computer's doing the rendering. And the hand pain part - I still remember the blister boards - you get blisters from cutting the boards
Seloloving February 13th, 2011, 07:28 AM That's it. I am bringing my buzzers with me when I enter Poly.
y2koh February 13th, 2011, 08:07 AM You probably do not have to endure the hand pain part. And depending on the proportion of individual projects, the first part about social life can be also be varied.
Seloloving February 13th, 2011, 08:15 AM ^^ I don't have that much of a social life. My company are the trains. I always think that a perfect day is getting on a train with good acceleration, loud announcments and quiet commuters.
Precisely why most of my "friends" call me crazy. But I just don't enjoy their company. Absolutely no interest in online gaming or Facebook or concerts or birthdays or rock bands or conventions or countdowns or whatever else you can think of. Heck, I didn't even go to my class parties. The last time I went out to have fun with my friends was years ago. :ohno:
Well, I may be crazy, but I just enjoy being me. Hopefully, the lack of social life will help me in Poly. :)
Seloloving February 13th, 2011, 09:42 AM ^^ Oh yes, what is with the hand pain part?
Aranho February 13th, 2011, 10:28 AM Oh, it's just cutting boards, bits and pieces thousands of times if you are in design courses, maybe for engineering too. I went through different materials, from foam to wood, endless papers, and now plastic.
Well selo, I hope the orientation camp will help you build up your social life (skills actually), just like how the camp changed me even just a little. :)
Just curious, which course did you went to?
y2koh February 13th, 2011, 12:34 PM Yes, and the orientation will immediately make you realise that you are not as "strange" and "crazy" as you might think. I'm certain you'll meet like-minded people, or some people who are even more "extreme".
Seloloving February 13th, 2011, 02:10 PM Just curious, which course did you went to?
Telematics and Media Technology (http://www.nyp.edu.sg/SEG/seg_courses_dip_tmt.htm). Nanyang Poly.
Yes, and the orientation will immediately make you realise that you are not as "strange" and "crazy" as you might think. I'm certain you'll meet like-minded people, or some people who are even more "extreme".
You haven't met me yet.
Mith252 February 13th, 2011, 03:14 PM ^^ That is assuring. You would be surprise by the transport enthusiast out there. :)
Anyway, I think we should have another meeting in the future. Hopefully, I would be able to make it.
