Looks really promising - has anyone got any updates on the demolition of the existing building? ABC - I know you took the photo in your post a couple of weeks ago.

It's probably one of the largest buildings so far demolished in the CBD.

If the current level of apartment building keeps up then Canberra will be a very different place in ten years time.

New apartments and townhouses outnumber separate houses by quite a large margin at the moment and it doesn't look like slowing up.

Yeah... so many apartments.. the REX hotel on Northbourne started their 12 level job this week as well..

Wow, this looks really good actually. I bet they're expensive apartments :(. There are a couple of buildings to be demolished in the city. Anyone know when the construction of the building will take place?

Is it all going to come down at once? I wanna see!

I think they'll lift some small excavators onto the roof of the building and bring it down floor by floor, it's a pretty boring process compared to an implosion or wrecking ball!

This is my favorite building going up in Canberra. Glassy and bulky without being a plain box.

It looks great. I just wish they hadn't called it 'Manhattan' apts. *cringe*

I think you'll find that pretty much every Australian city has an apartment complex called 'Manhattan aprtments'. My guess is that pretty much every major city overseas would have one too.

Great looking building "loving the curved facade" :)

It's going to be 16 levels, I have a 2x2 on the tenth.

AndyGM, if you are passing again, any chance of another photo? I'm interested to follow development as I have recently moved overseas.

Cheers

I don't work in Civic any more which makes it harder, but I'll see what I can do.

Nearly complete.

This is actually a really impressive building from street level.

Wow that looks awesome. What an excellent bar to set for apartments in the city.

AndyGM
May 13th, 2013, 08:36 AM
Yeah this and New Acton have really set the bar high.

Unfortunately once this is done there won't be much happening in Civic. There are plenty of approved projects but I think they are on-hold until after the election.

There are quite a number of 5-10 level projects in Braddon though so at least density near the city will still be improving.

It's a great looking building except that they have put this naff wire mesh type thingy right across the facade. Such a shame. it spoils the whole appearance of the building.

You can see it in the pic by Timbob above.

Didn't look to closely when I went past but I think it is carparking.

Here's an updated photo (20 May 2013)

The screened levels are carparking - there are two levels of (basement) carpark below ground, and two levels above ground.

Completion is scheduled for October 2013.
