well, there are many Russians in Iran, especially in the South. and some Slavic girls have married with Persian boys, but you're right, there are not many European foreigners in Iran.

(CNN) -- Former Portugal and Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz has been handed the challenge of reviving Iran as an Asian soccer superpower and clinching qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The 58-year-old, best known for his time at Manchester United where he helped the English club win the European Champions League and three domestic titles as an assistant coach, arrived in Tehran on Monday to sign a three-year contract.

He is the first non-Iranian to be appointed since Croatia's Branko Ivankovic ended his second stint after the 2006 World Cup.

Queiroz had agreed to take the job in February but then changed his mind due to family reasons, the official IRNA news agency reported.

e had been without a job since September, when he was sacked by Portugal after a row with anti-doping officials before the 2010 World Cup. He was banned for six months, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport subsequently overturned that ruling last month despite agreeing that his behavior was unacceptable.

Queiroz was criticized by Portuguese media after the national team needed to go to a playoff to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa, where his side lost in the second round to neighbors and eventual champions Spain.

He takes over an Iran team which lost in the quarterfinals of the Asian Cup in January under Iran-born U.S. national Afshin Ghotbi, who was subsequently sacked.

The Iranians -- known as "Team Melli" -- begin their campaign to qualify for the 2014 event against the Maldives in July, having failed to win a place among the world's top 32 nations in South Africa.

"I am here in Iran to help the team make it to the 2014 World Cup. This is my most important aim and I hope with everyone's help we can make it," Queiroz said after signing his contract live on state television, according to ISNA.

"I know about expectations. One thing I can tell you is that everyone thinks that they can reach the four and win the World Cup. But let's be realistic. How many have won the World Cup? We need to plan for the near, mid and long terms."

Queiroz will earn a salary of about $2 million a year, according to the website of Iran's English language Press TV channel, as he seeks to restore the fortunes of a nation which won the Asian Cup three times in a row from 1968 and qualified for the World Cup for the third time in 2006.

"You need to put together talent, organization and order. The better you put them together, the more chances of success," he said.

"Everything is open and I need the support of Iranian coaches. Coaching is about adaptation. If you can't adapt, then you cannot work. After working in different places, I have good chances of adapting in Iran. I worked with players from different continents. I dream of working on the moon."

Queiroz first came to prominence as coach of Portugal's national youth teams where he helped uncover future stars such as Luis Figo and Rui Costa, but his first spell in charge of the senior side ended in failure after failing to qualify for Euro '92 and the 1994 World Cup.

After an unsuccessful spell as coach of Lisbon's Sporting, he took jobs in the United States, Japan and the United Arab Emirates before being hired by South Africa, but quit after leading the national team to the 2002 World Cup finals.

He was taken on by United manager Alex Ferguson and won the English Premier League title in his first season at Old Trafford before becoming the main man at Spanish giants Real Madrid..

Queiroz lasted only a season of his two-year contract after failing to win a major trophy with a squad featuring the likes of Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham -- who also moved from United in 2003.

He went back to Old Trafford to rejoin Ferguson in 2004, where further success saw him given the Portugal job again in 2008 on a four-year contract.

I don't know who's fault it was but imo it was better if mr.Dayi didn't order the attack in that situation
I just heard from Iran's news that they recalled the Tractor vs Sepahan game as a nice occasion because Tractor's fans acted maturely. What a surprise(that the news mentioned it)

^^ lol , true, it was a good and proper game

in genreal, iran's fans used to be both rough and tough and ORGANIZED , they all chanted the same stuff etc, lit up flares, but now, there is zero unity in the stadiums, every corner chants their own thing etc, its getting better again, but slowly

sosha makani , keeper of stil azin dived and threw the ball out , persepolis took the throw in and scored off of that and thats how the problem started . they said that persepolis needed to give the ball to estil azin as a act of fair play, but still, sosha makani acted somwhow as if it wasnt even a dive. its a complex thing lol but man i wish the fight got more intense since i think until we dont experience such thing our football wont go anywhere

barca destroy real madrid 1-1 (3-1 aggregate) to book a seat in the wembley, and also, manchester united dismantle schalke 04 4-1 (6-1 aggregate) to face barcelona on may 28th for the european title

Barca didn't destroy Real. in many minutes of the game Real played much better. and their first goal wasn't a fault :P

67% posession against your bitter rivals is destruction

madrid are far behind barcelona, its not one or two moments of the match, rather the general trend, which barca dominated

QWECXZ
May 5th, 2011, 03:28 PM
Yes you can have a much higher ball possession and lose 4 - 1 like yesterday night's match between Man U and Shck 04. does that mean Shalke destroyed Man U because it had a higher ball possession and they'd completed more passes and their players had covered a longer distance? lol

I believe during the game Madrid in some moments played better and if the referee had accepted the Madrids' first goal they would've had a better chance of going to the next round. but Yea, in general Barca is a better team. regardless of the stars playing in Madrid, Barca has an amazing Team work. but I do agree with Mourinho that Barca has been very lucky in the last European championship games and the best example is Chelsea vs. Barca in 2009.

SoroushPersepolisi
May 5th, 2011, 07:09 PM
thats not what i mean, i mean when u sufficate your oponent and execute, causing you to win , and hardly letting the other side close to goal, you have won by a clear margin. thats what happened at barca v madrid. schalke man u was more even and united took advantage of their chances.

posession doesnt win you a game but exectuing chances through posession, is a strong way to win

and dun get me wrong, i dislike barcelona, messi is pissing me off

[QUOTE] Iran has for the first time claimed the title of the World Taekwondo Championships in the men's category during the 2011 competitions in South Korea's Gyeongju.

Iranian taekwondo athlete Yousef Karami took the country's medal tally to six when he snatched the third gold medal for Iran on Friday.

In the -87kg category, the 28-year-old Iranian defeated his rivals from Jamaica, China, Russia, and Spain before winning against his South Korean opponent Cha Dong-Min in the final match.

Earlier in the day, Iran's Kourosh Rajoli earned a bronze medal in the men's +87kg category.

Totally, the Iranian squad won three golds by Karami, Alireza Nasr Azadani and Farzad Abdullahi, one sliver by Mohammad Baqeri Motamed, and two bronze medals by Rajoli and Meysam Baqeri.

The title is the first championship for Iran during the past 20 editions of the tournament. South Korea had won all the previous events and Iran became the runner-up for five times. In the women's category, South Korea won the title.

Iran participated in the competition with eight athletes.
The 20th edition of the World Taekwondo Championships was held in South Korea from May 1 to May 6[QUOTE]

I don't know why Fergie's team played that bad. It was so embarrassing! excluding the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes of the first half and the last 20 minutes of the second half the game was in Barca's control. and Javier Hernandez (Chicharito) did nothing in Man U's attack line. Man U tried very hard to come back to the game but Barca wasted the last 20 minutes by passing the ball between its midfield and defense lines and Man U had no chance of coming back 'cuz it had low ball possession (except for the penalty that the referee didn't see it). :(

I don't understand Ghalenoi!

He made Sepahan champions of Iran and has taken them to the 1/8th round of the Asian Champions League. He still has a chance to make Sepahan chanpions of Asia. Even if Sepahan becomes second, depending on who becomes champion, they have a chance of going to the FIFA club world cup where he can get noticed for his abilities.

Now he throws all that away and puts Sepahan in disarray by leaving.

On the upside, we will see Teractor in the CL in two years time. Plus, Teractor's current coach makes me wanna shoot baby seals.

+1.
Professional salaries haven't brought professional football to Iran. so why should we pay them +500,000$ for a season if they are good for nothing?

its not just salaries, the crap players go through in iran is nothing like what it is in other places, in other places, even in saudi arabia, uae qatar, players are treated like heros, like they are worth while, in iran, its the exact contrary, the system (not people, the people love them) regards them as the exact opposite, they are constantly put under pressure from stupid laws etc , they dont get their salaries, they dont have proper training facilities, they are told not to do anything in their free time, the smallest bit of extra show (from politics to hairstyle) can cause them to be fined etc
i remember a player in abumoslem got banned from playing for a while because he came to practice with a motorcycle, like wtf
there are so may examples, btw there was a team in khuzestan that the players didnt have enough money to buy shoes since the club didnt pay them etc

many have a right to leave, simply because iran is so messed. allthough that was probably not the case for khalatbari, zobahan is one of the few actual good and professional clubs in iran

I agree partly with what you said. but I don't agree that the government doesn't let them be free. they are much freer than other professional players. for example I remember that Fergie fined all of Man U players except Christiano Ronaldo for going to a party and drinking. Iranian players are not professional, look at their bodies! many of them don't look fit and are overweight! It's true about other Middle Eastern teams as well. unlike you I believe our players don't deserve the attention they are getting and raising their salaries was a stupid move. (except some players like Rahmati, Khalatbari, Farhad Majidi and some others that deserve it)

lol thats what i mean. im saying the situation set up for them is so messed that they would leave! in iran they think just because u add several zeros , ur a pro!

half the players are fat and the good ones are given so much crap that they cant handle and break. every good star emerging is ruined by the media and system, ali karimi, ali daei mahdavikia etc etc etc there are many.
yes in europe drinking or partying prior to a match is tough on u, they wont be happy but in iran u get banned for having a modeled hair cut!

i remember 2 years ago (i think) one of the esteghlal players (hanif omranzadeh) was not allowedto play for his hair style, he went through so much mansha'e akhlaghi etc to come back

i never said they deserve attention, i said that they should be given attention to get out of the crappy situation they are in, not because they are crap! iran's football is well marginalized, there are many talents, many, if u watch lower leagues you will see what i mean, but how come none emerge? and the fat ass ones do? very few teams have proper developement systems, so many are so poorly managed that playing for them is just a mission,

the rest of the middle east has no talent, but 20 times the money and attention (gulf countries not like palestine lol)

u knk what i mean? khodama nafahmidam chi goftam but u kno lol

All other Iranian resources may be limited and crude, but football players, Iran has unlimited number of them in a very high quality. It's just a matter of time before they are discovered and managed to the world standards, and that's when the world will be surprised. All it needs is a spark.

Persepolis’ technical committee selected Ali Daei on Monday as coach of Iran’s most popular football team.

Daei had publicly spoken out against Persepolis General Manager after the Reds won Iran’s Hazfi Cup in Bandar Anzali 10 days ago. However, he said on Monday that he was ready to sign a blank contract with the team.

Daei, vacationing in Spain, is bound to announce his plans through his agent within the 12 hours.

He had been criticized over the bad results in the Iran Professional League. The Tehran-based team suffered five defeats in a row for the first time in club’s history. Daei also made history by suffering 12 losses during a season.

Nevertheless, former Iran and Persepolis captain inspired the team to claim the Hazfi Cup title for the second successive year.

Former Shahin of Bushehr coach Hamid Estili is an alternative for Daei to take charge of Persepolis.

MNA - TEHRAN, Ali Karimi said that on Saturday he is so happy to return to Persepolis football team.

Free agent midfielder signed a one-year contract worth approximately $400,000 with Persepolis on Saturday.

“Returning to Persepolis has given me a great pleasure. I want to play for the Persepolis for the remaining years,” Karimi said. "I had offers from the Emirati clubs but preferred to join Persepolis. Thanks to Mr. Kashani (Persepolis General Manager) to give me the opportunity to return to my team," he added.

Karimi, popularly known as the "Wizard of Tehran", had joined Schalke 04 in the winter transfer window on a six-month contract that ended recently. He came off the bench for the last six minutes against Inter Milan in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal where the German club beat defending champion Inter Milan 5-2. He also played once in Bundeliga against Kaiserlautern

Karimi joined Persepolis in 1998 and then left the team for Al Ahli of the UAE in 2001. The 33-year-old player inked a two-year deal with Bayern Munich in 2005. Karimi has played for Qatar SC and Al Sailiya as well as Iranian club Steel Azin.

The 32-year-old player has played 112 times for Iran’s national team and scored 36 goals.

Ali Mansourian will be a good coach in the future. He used to be the head coach of Pas-e Hamedan as Soroush said, and he also coached Iran's National team vs. Russia and Iran won the game. We shouldn't blame him for the the game. He didn't have time to be with the team, don't forget that our team didn't have a coach and Mansouran was named coach few weeks before the game. plus, the players had no morale to play against Iraq because they had lost the first leg 3-0 to Iraq due to using an ineligible player. We should blame only the federation, not the players and the coach.

Former Croatia coach Tomislav Ivic has died at the age of 77.

His death Friday was announced by the Croatian Football Federation. Croatian media says Ivic suffered from diabetes and heart problems.

Ivic coached the national teams of the former Yugoslavia, Croatia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, along with 20 clubs from 14 different countries, in a coaching career spanning 1967-2004.

He won league titles with Hajduk Split, Ajax, Anderlecht, Porto, Panathinaikos and Olympique Marseille.

In 2007, Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport named Ivic the most successful football coach in history, having won eight national titles in six different countries.

The team was purchased two days ago by a Mashadi investor named Mohamadi Far for an amount of about 4 billion tomans.
I think he owns Padideh Shandiz but its just a rummer. The team is already in big financial debt exceeding over 4 billion tomans. The new owner will officially announce his plans for the team today.

wtf, why are these idiots moving everything, just because te owner mashhadi?? does that mean arsenal has to move to dubai because their owner is emarati?

rah ahan is one of the most historical teams in iran's football, its like moving persepolis to esfahan

they just want to destroy the teams

mashhad already has dozen teams

According to AFC deadline, Iranian clubs in IPL have to privatize by 2012. If Iran does not meet this deadline they are going to loose their spots in Asian champion league. Currently Iran has four spots.
Rah Ahan was the first team that its stocks were offered in Tehran Stock exchange with the idea of privatization and other teams like Esteghlal & Perspolis are going to follow.
There us no doubt that privatization Idea is very good and under normal circumstances could help improving our football. But I don't think it has a chance in Iran giving the level of 'Mafia Bazi' and power games in the 'khodi' circles monopolizing everything in Iran. That's beside the fact that here is no TV rights and other standards (Private stadiums, etc.).
Rah Ahan was sold four days ago and still nobody for sure knows who the owner is and what is going to happen to the poor team. One they they are told they will move to Mashad under name of Prespolis or Aboumoslem and next they get the 'news' that they will stay in Tehran and all of this is happening when the deadline for the IPL players transfer is next week!!!
One thing for sure is that Rah Ahan, Like Pas Tehran will be vanished in a short period and there will be nothing left of it but history.

can't wait for the games tomorrow. I don't know if I should watch the Iran game or the Saudi game! I know Iran is going to trash Indo and I'm hoping to see Saudi lose to Oman.

iran used to be above the asian standard, we were a strong side

but after the deterioration of the sports system everything collapsed especially football

its like street football now

Yes, but apart from Japan, South Korea and Australia, nobody should really cause Iran problems, so I expect Iran to qualify.
