Business Birmingham gears up for MIPIM 2011
1st February 2011
By Tamlyn Jones - Business Correspondent
Cllr Mike Whitby at Birmingham's stand at MIPIM 2010
NINETEEN private sector partners will be part of a delegation heading to southern France next month to showcase the best of the Birmingham property industry.
Willmott Dixon Construction, Carillion and Argent are among those joining inward investment organisation Business Birmingham at MIPIM 2011, in Cannes, from March 8 to 11.
The event will give the city's property sector a chance to showcase its best developments and regeneration projects.
This is the first time Business Birmingham, the city's new inward investment programme, will manage the presence at MIPIM.
It will work with the private sector partners at events to engage developers and companies looking to invest in the city.
City council leader Cllr Mike Whitby said: "Building on Team Birmingham's successful presence at MIPIM since 2005, this year's delegation will demonstrate how the city's public and private sectors are working together to blaze a trail for the city and its reputation.
"I am delighted that this year will see our most interactive stand ever, which will be enjoyed by thousands of potential investors, developers and financiers as part of a targeted programme to showcase the city, our Big City Plan and our sustainable vision for the future."
Erebus555 February 1st, 2011, 04:00 PM I can't really imagine there being any new schemes being unveiled for Brum at this year's event. And maybe that's for the best because they all seem to end up getting scrapped.
Biosonic February 1st, 2011, 05:31 PM I predict:
- lots about the Library
- lots about New St Station
- lots about schools
- lots about universities
- lots about the Big City Plan and Vision for Movement
- tons about HS2
- lots of current projects and any being restarted
- but not much about new projects.

MIPIM the place to realise global city aspirations
2nd February 2011

WORLDWIDE property conference MIPIM could this year provide the platform to enhance Birmingham's bid to become a global city.
The city's new inward investment agency Business Birmingham is leading a delegation of private sector partners, along with the city council, to southern France next month for the 2011 event.
Among those attending will be consultancy Rider Levett Bucknall, whose chief executive Lance Taylor, said: "Birmingham has aspirations to be a global city and this is a fantastic goal to work towards.
"Exhibiting at MIPIM shows that we are serious about the challenge we face and that we are most definitely open for business.
"Public and private sectors of Birmingham have joined forces to use their substantial strength, energy and expertise to showcase the spirit of Birmingham to the rest of the world."
Also supporting Birmingham's presence in Cannes is Edgbaston-based planning consultancy Brooke Smith Planning.
Founder and director Louise Brooke-Smith added: "Birmingham is a city of investment that the international community is recognising as a place to do real business and achieve real success.
"We have worked in the city for over 20 years and have seen the fantastic changes that have taken Birmingham forward."
Also supporting the delegation are Argent, Carillion, Keepmoat, Nikal,
Birmingham Unlimited partnership of Aedas RLB, Savills, URS and CSJ Brooke Smith, Birmingham Science Park Aston, Bruntwood, Calthorpe Group, Centro, Glenn Howells Architects, Jaguar Landrover, McLaren Construction, Moorfield Hines and Willmott Dixon Construction.
Erebus555 February 2nd, 2011, 06:05 PM Interesting that Aedas are attending... Glenn Howells has always been a great advocate for the city and I'm guessing Hines will be trying to push for more investment and success in Brindleyplace.

Mr Glide February 18th, 2011, 09:40 PM Is this ever more than just an expensive talking shop though?
What Brum and the West Mids conurbation need is real inward investment in terms of cold hard cash and therefore jobs. Focussing on bespoke manufacturing, R&D and promoting Brum as an attractive destination for more financial sector back office functions. Assisted by investment in local transport and better graduate retention, citing two examples. Not non existent multi-storey glass towers and Big city plans that may or may not happen in 20 years.
Mr Glide February 18th, 2011, 09:45 PM ...and HS2 is great in principle. But if it fails to provide a direct connection with Europe then it's ration d'etre will be seriously undermined.
Completely pointless to have to terminate in London then trudge across town to St Pancras to continue onward to Paris etc.

the way i see it is that since the conservatives came into power in birmingham, things have been starting to happen after the lul that was albert bore....

the conservatives have done a lot of good work in birmingham.... regardless of what the guy looks like!

To be honest I don't think it's unreasonable for people to dislike somebody on the basis of the political party that they represent. If you hate everything a party stands for and have done for years or decades, I think it's fair to be able to judge a person who's standing up and saying "I agree with enough of what this party stand for that I want to actively represent them". What could you have in common with them?
I've only ever lived in the city under the Tory/Lib Dem coalition so can't compare it to the years under Labour, but Whitby's insistence on bragging about how low our council tax is compared to other cities really annoys me when I look around me and see a city in need of investment. I suppose that's a fundamental ideological point on which I could never agree with him - the biggest shame is that there are equally fundamental ideological points on which I could never agree with Labour too, which doesn't give me much of a choice!
nigeman February 27th, 2011, 05:04 PM [QUOTE=woodhousen;73417539]well that is it. i work in the public sector and nationally am currently having the con/lib coalition... but i'll openly admit, in the last few years in power, the cons/lib coalition in birmingham has done the city wonders.... and has done the city more than the labour inder bore didn even in the boom years!!!

I still find it hard to forgive him for his election promise to give us an underground when you knew full well it would never happen. Yes he as made some things happen, he's a money man with connections, but he as also promised a lot too that hasn't happened too.
Biosonic February 27th, 2011, 08:25 PM It might be contentious to mention it on here but for me the biggest things the Tory/LD's have done are not in the areas of development (although New St and the Library are big achievements) but in turning round a poorly performing and wasteful council. They have failed to do much about social services though.
woodhousen February 27th, 2011, 10:13 PM i just wish people would be judged on their work and not the colour of their party.. i know it seems simplistic but i really couldnt give a shit what colour the city is so long as they do a good job at running it and delivering growth...
bring on elected mayors
fruit&nut February 28th, 2011, 12:31 PM I think this administration in the City should be given credit for what they have achieved as Woody says.
My beef however with Whitby and the current council is my old issue with the evasive 50m pool, that was promised and never will be delivered. Why are we spending money in Harborne (simple answer - because it's Whitby's ward) that could have been used to build a simple 50m pool without all the clutter? It's a major flaw that I struggle to forgive them for.
bikmax February 28th, 2011, 03:16 PM It,s all well and good claiming you don,t care about politics but the development of our cities does not occur in some sort of political, economic and social vacuum. If we are to develop the sort of cities, that i assume we all want-ie. environmentally sustainable, liveable economically viable centres then it is important that they are planned and not left to the whims of the market and the economic short terminism of property speculators. That is certainly not going to happen under a Tory administration. Effective planning needs strong local government with effective money raising powers.

U475 Foxtrot March 8th, 2011, 12:31 PM BSPA on lookout for Digital Plaza partner
Last updated: Tue 8th March, 2011 | Time: 08:31am
Birmingham Science Park Aston (BSPA) is using the MIPIM property conference this week to appoint a joint venture partner to deliver its £35m Digital Plaza.
The Digital Plaza – which will, subject to planning, be developed next to the Park’s Faraday Wharf building – will comprise four buildings, specifically designed for the new generation of hi-tech companies.
BSPA is wholly owned by Birmingham City Council.
The science park’s internet connection is unrivalled across the country, and last year was named as one of the country’s first science parks without walls.
Councillor Mike Whitby, leader of Birmingham City Council and chairman of Birmingham Science Park Aston, said: “We will be using the conference as a platform to initiate conversations with national and international developers, contractors, investors and consultants.
"We then anticipate that formal proceedings to begin the selection process will commence, with a view to work potentially starting on site by late 2012/early 2013. This will be a highly exciting and progressive development for Birmingham’s burgeoning digital economy.”
The four proposed Digital Plaza buildings will provide a total of 117,272 sq ft of space, with the first building - iCentrumTM – being the largest at 46,069 sq ft.
There are plans for two further buildings of 17,534 sq ft and a fourth building offering 36,134 sq ft. These buildings are expected to appeal to larger companies as headquarters style facilities, said the park’s operator.

MIPIM 2011: Birmingham seeks science park jv partner

http://www.egi.co.uk/assets/getAsset.aspx?ItemID=43272
Birmingham council is seeking a joint venture partner to deliver a £35m "digital plaza" at Birmingham Science Park in Aston.
The council will unveil its plans and timeframe to appoint a jv partner at a seminar tomorrow morning at the MIPIM property conference in Cannes.
Subject to consent, the digital plaza will comprise four new buildings totalling 117,000 sq ft and will range in size from two buildings of 17,500 sq ft each, alongside a 36,000 sq ft and 46,000 sq ft scheme.
The bigger buildings are expected to appeal to larger companies as headquarters-style facilities. The buildings will be linked by a colonnade walkway on land fronting on to Holt Street and will be located next to the park's existing Faraday Wharf complex.
The scheme will be aimed at the new generation of hi-tech start-up companies.
Councillor Mike Whitby, leader of Birmingham council, which owns the Birmingham Science Park, said: "We will be using the conference as a platform to initiate conversations with national and international developers, contractors, investors and consultants.
"We then expect formal proceedings to begin the selection process to commence, with a view to work potentially starting on site by late 2012 or early 2013."
Dr David Hardman, BSPA chief executive, added: "In order to remain competitive, we must create buildings which are specifically designed for companies in the hi-tech and digital gaming sectors and for the digitally savvy founders of these ventures."
More than 37,000 sq ft of offices has been let on the 14-acre BSPA estate over the past 12 months. Faraday Wharf, which incorporates meeting and conference rooms, as well as an incubation centre, is now more than 95% let.

I beleive there was speculative talk and draft designs around a massive pyramid office building for Cisco on the site of what will now be the High Speed rail run in to Curzon Street during the heady boom time we enjoyed a few years ago, when all sorts of exciting projects were about to be unleashed upon us. I could be wrong but I beleive BCC actually said no to them. They had greater plans for the area that included an enormous vertical entertainment tower complex.:doh

Last updated: Fri 11th March, 2011 | Time: 14:07pm
Birmingham’s delivery of large scale infrastructure, transport and retail developments attracted more than 900 investors to the city’s MIPIM stand, it has been revealed.
Leader of Birmingham City Council, Mike Whitby, said: “Birmingham has upped its game in how it promotes itself as a global city and is now a premier destination of choice for investors.
“MIPIM has provided the city with an opportunity to not only showcase our vision for making Birmingham a leading global city in which to live, work and invest, but to engage with over 900 representatives of the global developer community.
“The Big City Plan, our blueprint for investors to see how the city will develop over the next 20 years, our vision for improving the city’s transport network and connections, with the runway extension at Birmingham airport and HS2, made for a compelling offer for delegates at the conference and I am looking forward to progressing some of the connections we have made this week.”
Major announcements made at MIPIM involving Birmingham included the unveiling of images of the New Street Station/John Lewis development, a certificate of immunity granted for the library and Rider Levett Bucknall being appointed by State Bank of India for a project fit-out and refurbishment plan for nine high street branches.

There can't be many major cities in Europe with a less impressive system than us, surely?
(I should point out that I understand that this is for a variety of reasons, most of which aren't Birmingham's fault.)
sefton66 March 11th, 2011, 07:39 PM Road wise we are ideally located with the M6, M5 and M42, dont forget a lot of money is being invested into the M6 widening programme.
Rail wise we are ideally located with most trains stopping at birmingham, you can practically get a train anywhere and our cross city line (when the workers arent on strike!) is quite good to be honest. And with HS2 it puts at the centre of a transport hub
Bus wise and metro wise we are lacking though

Business Birmingham to showcase the city at MIPIM
Business Birmingham and the city’s business community are joining forces once more to promote Birmingham’s investment opportunities to 18,600 delegates from 90 countries at MIPIM 2012.
Birmingham is hosting an extensive events programme during each day of MIPIM, the world’s leading real estate event (Cannes, March 6-9) – highlighting world-class strengths in areas including connectivity and infrastructure, and outlining investment opportunities resulting from initiatives such as the Big City Plan and HS2.
Some 16 partners from the private and public sectors across the city will work together to showcase Birmingham’s collaborative environment, supportive business networks and the economic conditions that help to support business growth and entrepreneurship.

joshwebb February 3rd, 2012, 08:56 AM Hope we get a couple towers out of mipim this year
Ecological February 3rd, 2012, 10:46 AM Doubt it Josh.
I got my old little booking form through the other week.
Not going.
I can see HS2 being the "golden ticket".
woodhousen February 3rd, 2012, 12:24 PM think youre right. HS2 will be the main talking point as well as on site projects such as new street, the library and the metro demonstrating current investments in the city...
will be interesting to see what - if anything - is announced this year!
joshwebb February 3rd, 2012, 12:42 PM What you mean booking form? Are you allowed to go?
Ecological February 3rd, 2012, 02:01 PM If you're a lucky professional and got plenty of Euro's Josh, which I don't unfortunately.
NIKAL are one of Birmingham's principle partners this year which suggests we may see something regarding the next phase of Masshouse which was a biggie.
Also Argent planned to submit a planning app. for Paradise Cirucs this year so we may see something relating to that, especially as Glen Howells is exhibiting too.
joshwebb February 3rd, 2012, 07:08 PM Yeah I wana see 2 towers over 100m from masshouse n paradise circus :)
fruit&nut February 3rd, 2012, 10:50 PM BUMP

PLease forgive me for not holding my breathe.
MIPIM at the moment is a total waste of time, money and energy and for one can't get at all excited by it.
Myster E February 4th, 2012, 12:53 AM Yeah I wana see 2 towers over 100m from masshouse n paradise circus :)
Come on Josh, you can't always be obsessed about height or tall towers in the city when we need to better plan out other areas of the city first ;-)
Erebus555 February 4th, 2012, 04:04 AM Now now, Josh is learning and isn't as much as a size queen as he was before! I think we all wouldn't mind a couple of tallies from those sites at some point soon either. ;)
joshwebb February 4th, 2012, 11:51 AM Exactly :) n I am surprised that a tower of at least 60m hasn't been proposed for the HS2 station yet
rafter1 February 4th, 2012, 12:19 PM I enjoy the input from Josh on this forum, after all it is called SKYSCRAPER City.
Erebus555 February 4th, 2012, 01:29 PM Exactly :) n I am surprised that a tower of at least 60m hasn't been proposed for the HS2 station yet
Well, we haven't had any solid proposals for HS2, so no need to be surprised! There's still a chance. :)
joshwebb February 4th, 2012, 04:36 PM I enjoy the input from Josh on this forum, after all it is called SKYSCRAPER City.
thats what i say rafter but they just think im crazy tho
djay February 4th, 2012, 09:26 PM thats what i say rafter but they just think im crazy tho
we love you josh! but most of us realise Birmingham copycating Manhattan probably isn't the way to go
joshwebb February 5th, 2012, 12:11 AM All I want is our skyline to be the best outside london by a longshot and more 100m+ proposals will make that happen if they get built
Ecological February 8th, 2012, 01:35 PM I really do think Paradise Circus is going to be the spinner at MIPIM this year.
Altitude Real Estate are also attending and showcasing.
the big 3 behind the scheme are all there.
Now with the fact a public consultation is ready for the 21st Feb and planning to be ready for summer 12.
I think we will see quite a lot of what we can come to expect in early March in Cannes.
Nacho February 17th, 2012, 10:51 AM An article from today's Birmingham Post :
http://www.birminghampost.net/birmingham-business/birmingham-business-news/commercial-property-birmingham/2012/02/17/west-midlands-property-and-development-leaders-head-to-mipim-2012-65233-30346917/
Ecological February 21st, 2012, 02:01 PM Seems like Nikal are progressing with Masshouse now HST and the EPZ has been given the go ahead.
There presence seems rather large this year.
600,000 sqft of office plus 200 bed hotel and complimentary retail over 3 buildings.
Josh will probably enjoy these more.
ReissOmari February 21st, 2012, 02:23 PM Well the original Masshouse plan was very good, hopefully they do shock us with something and hopefully the Courts might come back to life too. The car park in front of McLaren still has part of the old Masshouse underpass still in place!
Erebus555 February 21st, 2012, 02:29 PM It sounds like they're sticking with the original plan, as those figures do sound very similar to the last outline proposal with the exception of the hotel, which is new to me...
Hopefully we don't lose that 104 metre tower they planned!
joshwebb February 21st, 2012, 02:38 PM So possibly they will unveil a 104m tower at mipim?
-Stiggy- February 21st, 2012, 02:41 PM And what encourages me in particular is that now Nikal own masshouse 100%, they seem to be pushing for higher quality. Ok Hive may not be to everyones taste externally, it was too late to change the design when David Mclean went bust however; there is no denying that that have upped the quality of the original plans significantly. Looking at Nikal's other proposed developments we may see a strong upturn in design and materials quality at Masshouse.
Josh, I wouldn't get your hopes up. There is a tower approved in priciple but that's not to say that they will go for that, or indeed show anything to do with future phases at MIPIM. They may just be there to push Hive, although I hope not.
ReissOmari February 21st, 2012, 02:49 PM Here is the original plan for Masshouse, Block M obviously doesn't look like that now, and the block in front of it won'r be happening as that's the site for the Courts now.

Ecological February 21st, 2012, 03:08 PM Yeah the figures don't differ to dramatically although the hotel does seem to be new which considering the HS2 isn't surprising.
Still over 3 buildings on the remainder of the site (excluding courts) justifies the notion that they will be of similar to height of what we saw outlined.
-Stiggy- February 21st, 2012, 06:38 PM I expect it has been posted on here already, but the events schedule for MIPIM has been put online.

ReissOmari February 21st, 2012, 11:47 PM ^^ Thanks Erebus, I do remember those plans.. I think I prefer the orginial though, we'll have to see what Nikal have to say :)
ReissOmari February 22nd, 2012, 12:22 AM Here we go, found larger images of the above, and some others..

Ecological February 22nd, 2012, 12:02 PM Just looking at that model.
Whats the tower behind MP.
The so called "tate tower" concept?
Erebus555 February 22nd, 2012, 06:49 PM It was a few years after the Tate Tower. We never found out what it was but there were rumours a hotel was in the works for a site behind MP.
Ecological February 23rd, 2012, 10:46 AM Must have missed that one.
Ta for the response.
Ecological March 7th, 2012, 12:57 PM Seems like Nikal are progressing with Masshouse now HST and the EPZ has been given the go ahead.
