View Full Version : LAS VEGAS - UNLV Football Stadium (40,000)
carnifex2005 February 2nd, 2011, 04:10 AM Developers laid out plans today for a 150-acre master-planned development near the UNLV campus that would include retail space and residential housing, with a 40,000-seat domed stadium as its centerpiece (http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/feb/01/plans-proposed-unlv-stadium-be-unveiled-morning/).
The proposed domed stadium would evolve around a movable seating sections concept, like one used in Japan at the Saitama Super Arena.
Silverton Casino Lodge president Craig Cavileer said the stadium would have 40,000 seats to accommodate UNLV football games, with seating of about 20,000 for UNLV basketball games and other events such as concerts, soccer, boxing and bullriding. It would have the option of seating as few as 7,500 people.

Edit: Also can a mod rename the city name to LAS VEGAS in the title? How embarrassing.
rantanamo February 2nd, 2011, 04:25 PM Looks really cool. When I was in Vegas this summer I saw the rendering and walled off area for that other arena on the strip. Are those plans scrapped or still there aimed at stealing an NBA team?
Archbishop February 2nd, 2011, 05:45 PM Beat me to it. This stadium should be cool.
will101 February 2nd, 2011, 08:30 PM This is a huge, complicated and expensive looking project. And they already waffled when asked for a cost, saying that it is "far too early" to put on a price tag. To me that is male cow droppings.
Jericho-79 February 3rd, 2011, 12:58 AM What will happen to Sam Boyd Stadium then?
Darloeye February 3rd, 2011, 01:05 AM Las Vegas has a Pro Football Team in the las vegas locomotives
rantanamo February 3rd, 2011, 02:34 AM Its Vegas. Heavy use would be no problem.

San Jose State has trouble drawing the minimum average for whatever they are calling Division 1-A nowadays.
dfwabel February 3rd, 2011, 07:26 AM The developers gave no timetable and no cost estimates for this.
To me that means that that they are attempting to elude the city/county who shot down arena plans in June 2010 since they asked for public money and they are going directly to the state.
The state will conduct public meetings on the state budget and possible education cuts this Saturday.
And now they want "a private/public partnership". OK
KingmanIII February 4th, 2011, 12:37 AM Looks like Roski's moved on from his Industry project...

Last June, the three separate arena projects went to the city asking for public financing or tax breaks of some sort. The city council told them all that no public funds or rezoning for tax breaks would be given.
In this "Proposed" section there is the story under one of the potential facilities...Silver State Arena
Jim856796 February 4th, 2011, 08:30 AM If the UNLV On-Campus Football Stadium is built, what will be done to Sam Boyd stadium, Demolition?
rantanamo February 4th, 2011, 09:34 AM Silver State. That's the one. There was a hole section of land fenced of with Silver State and the arena's rendering all over it as if it was under construction or about to be built.
carnifex2005 May 7th, 2011, 02:17 AM Here's another proposed Las Vegas stadium project (http://www.lasvegassun.com/blogs/ralstons-flash/2011/may/06/arena-developer-snags-51s-site-behind-mandalay-bay/). This one is a proposed arena, baseball park and stadium all on the same plot of land behind Mandalay Bay.

ryebreadraz May 8th, 2011, 09:27 AM I wish Vegas would get a 60k stadium so they could play the Pac-12 Championship Game there. It wouldn't be smart since it would be empty 99% of the time, but it'd be awesome for that event.

Trust me: a Vegas venue wouldn't sit empty, especially if they landed an NFL franchise and/or utilized it for concerts, championship boxing/MMA events, Wrestlemania, and the like.

The only reason these renderings were released is because the Las Vegas 51s were recently sold to the "developer" of this project, Chris Milam.
Last July, Milam was the guy who said that an NBA team was under contract to relocate to Las Vegas if a new arena was built, preferably on a plot of land he owned.
“We have an NBA team under contract, (but the deal will take effect only) if other pieces of the puzzle fall into place: One of those pieces will be that a building is approved.”- Las Vegas Sun July 14, 2010
He also says that the $2B will be privately financed. With hotel projects halted and Las Vegas' jobless rate near 15%, this will not even have a groundbreaking ceremony.

Plus the fact that Las Vegas is looking at water rationing in the future.

The public-private partners behind a proposed on-campus stadium at UNLV say they are developing a plan to build it without raising taxes.
Since the Legislature this year rejected a special tax district to fund the $2 billion stadium/dormitory/retail project, university administrators and Majestic Realty Co. have been working on a financial formula and other changes to allow the project to move forward.
Craig Cavileer, president of Silverton resort and Majestic’s representative on the project, said one idea is for UNLV to issue but not underwrite bonds to pay for construction, allowing the university to avoid liability should the project fail and investors sue. Another idea is for Majestic to fund the project.
Regardless of the source of financing, the stadium would be built on public land — west of the Thomas & Mack Center on space now used for parking — eliminating the need to pay hefty property taxes and seek a special state exemption from the tax.
Majestic Realty would lease the land from UNLV, and the two entities would split the profits 50-50, Cavileer said.
Changes to the project include:
• Building a 60,000-seat open-air stadium instead of a 40,000-seat domed stadium;
• Renovating the Thomas & Mack Center and building a promenade of retail establishments between the basketball arena and the stadium.
• Constructing 3,000 to 5,000 units of student housing.
