Thats an interesting question, but i think English will be the major language taught in schools, purely for historic reasons and also regional/economic reasons.

I think the official languages are both English and Arabic, so I expect Arabic to still be taught at academic levels, since the Juba inhabitants use it regularly as their lingua franca.

Of course, English will get the upper-hand. Historically speaking, Sub-Saharan Africa has had a fair share of influence from European languages such as English, French, Italian, Portuguese, even German, Dutch, etc. So I think in the case of Southern Sudan, the European language (this case English) will get the upper-hand while Arabic will slowly become unfavorable.

Of course it's not just historic reasons or geopolitical reasons behind that cause, but it's also the fact English will bring Southern Sudan more economic opportunity than Arabic, especially when the Arab World does not even respect Southern Sudan's wishes to become independent of their northern counterparts.

Jeff, not meaning to intrude but may I ask why your avatar does not show the northern African coastal states? Is there any reason behind that at all?

I understand a number of schools in Southern Sudan follow the Kenyan system of education. Its also very likely that S.Sudan will eventually join the East African Community which is looking at ways of harmonising education systems in all member countries. That means English will eventually get the upper hand in the education system.
