SOURCE (http://www.constructionweekonline.in/article-5454-can_india_lead_on_green/)

India’s consensual sympathy for the environment has not yet fully infiltrated the architecture sector. But there are signs that progress here will be rapid once the benefits are accurately understood, says Deepali Nandwani.

Last month, a National Geographic survey on the shopping habits and attitudes of consumers in 14 countries rated Indians as the greenest, along with Brazilians and Chinese. The parameters chosen to rate people included sustainable behaviour like efficient energy use and conservation, transportation choices, food sources and attitude towards the environment.

What was not included was India’s performance on sustainable architecture, and while to date this has been an under-used aspect of building design, there are signs the nation could be a world leader on this front in the near future too.

According to LEED certification, the recognised method for measuring building sustainability, India’s use of sustainable architecture is increasing. Till about five years ago, India didn’t rate highly on the sustainable architecture parameter. Now, it has about a dozen projects, both residential and commercial, that have obtained LEED certification.

Consider this fact: by 2012, two Indian cities – Ahmedabad and Jaipur, will be among metropolises like Melbourne (Australia), Palhoca (Brazil), Stockholm (Sweden) and Johannesburg (South Africa) that have a township with over a million people living in a model urban environment, which is sustainable and environment friendly.

These projects will be supported by the American Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI). In India, two projects have been identified by the CCI — Godrej Garden City, Ahmedabad and the Mahindra World City (MWC), Jaipur. The programme supports the development of large-scale urban projects that demonstrate how cities can grow in ways that are climate positive.

Pirojsha Godrej, executive director, Godrej Properties, says that the Godrej Garden City would be a 270-acre township. “We are working with internationally-reputed architects and the designs are in the initial stages.

We would be looking at issues like generation of clean energy, waste management, water management, transportation and outdoor lighting systems,” he says, revealing how serious some Indian architects and real estate developers are about implementing green initiatives.

Interestingly, developers and builders previously known to be more concerned about their bottom line than the environment, are leading the green architecture movement in India.

According to India’s ministry for environment and forests, over 25 commercial and residential projects under construction have applied for green certification in the last one year.

Among these are two mega IT parks in Kolkata and Mumbai— the 6.5 lakh sq ft Olympia in Kolkata and a K Raheja-promoted 1.2 lakh sq ft IT Park in Bandra-Kurla complex, Mumbai. This number is expected to increase tenfold by 2010, to a total of 100 buildings.

JAIPUR: After the Japanese setting base in Neemrana, a high power Taiwanese delegation led by deputy minister, council for economic planning and development, Gee San on Friday visited Neemrana toexplore investment opportunities in Rajasthan. The delegation comprised public and private sector representatives.

On behalf of the Bureau of Industrial Promotion, Ritu Lohia, general manager, made a presentation outlining the investment opportunities available in the state. She made a specific proposition to the delegation whereby an exclusive Taiwanese zone could be created here. The locations suggested to the delegation were Alwar (NCR), Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur and Jodhpur regions. She proposed that Taiwan's electronics hardware strength and India's software strength can be synergistically combined.

The CEO of Mahendra World City, B K Subbaih, also offered a sector specific zone to the delegation in the World City near here. He said the SEZ was an integrated business city. Some of the strengths of the Rajasthan, he said, were the power availability and connectivity.

The minister said that the delegation found the business opportunities very exciting and evinced keen interest in exploring the areas where they could invest. Gee San thanked the state for offering to provide an exclusive zone to set up Taiwanese units very much like the existing Japanese zone in Neemrana. The meeting was jointly organized by FICCI, Rajasthan State Industrial Development & Investment Corporation Limited (RIICO) and BIP.

Panel clears investment of Rs 6,300 crore in Rajasthan

JAIPUR: The state empowered committee under the chairmanship of chief secretary cleared the way for investment of more than Rs 6,300 crore in Rajasthan on Friday. These approved investment projects will now be placed before the state cabinet which is likely to be convened next week.

Chambal Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited which already has two plants at Gadepan in Kota district will make an investment of Rs 4,600 crore through its expansion at the existing facility. A new plant that will come up will have the production capacity of 13 lakh tonnes urea per year. The earlier two plants have a combined capacity to produce about 20 lakh tonnes of urea per annum.

JCB India, an earthmover machines manufacturer will make an investment of Rs 500 crore and set up a manufacturing plant in Mahindra World City (SEZ) at Ajmer Road. In its Jaipur plant the company will make a backhoe loader, fabrication units and other parts and components.

"The company already has plants at Pune and Ballabgarh in Haryana and both combined have an investment of Rs 900 crore. Project in Rajasthan will be the single highest investment made by the company and generate an employment for more than 1000 people. We expect that with JCB setting up its plant in Jaipur, more ancillary firms will also come up," said sources.

Confirming the news that these projects have been approved in the meeting, Purushottam Agarwal, commissioner (investment & NRI's) bureau of investment promotion said, "There is a positive perception about investment climate in Rajasthan and many industries have shown their interest in investing here. There are good proposals in the pipeline which are under consideration and examination."

Another major investment which was cleared by the empowered committee is of Hero MotoCorp Ltd.The company will set up a research and design (R&D) institute, manufacturing plant of high-end two-wheelers and a global parts center. The R&D plant will come up at Kukas while other two will be in Neemrana. The investment is expected to generate direct jobs for 1000 people.

The high-end two-wheelers plant will be the fourth manufacturing unit of the company. The global parts center will make the auto components which will be exported in other parts of the world.

A proposal for a hotel at Udaipur was also approved. The investment is of Rs. 86 crore made by a New York-based doctor. The land on which the hotel will come up belongs to the NRI but the government has given relaxation in land conversion and taxes.

"For all the investments the government has provided customized incentive packages. There are 7-8 more proposals which will be put before the cabinet. All of them have come because of lucrative schemes provided by the state government." said sources.

Mahindra World City signs up Prithvi Steels for tube plant

MUMBAI, FEB 7:

Mahindra World City, Jaipur, has signed up Prithvi Steels to set up a steel tube plant, the first such plant, in Rajasthan. To be set up at an investment of Rs 20 crore, the turnover of the new plant is estimated to be over Rs 150 crore.

Mahindra World City, Jaipur, is an integrated business city, while Prithvi Steels is a manufacturer of steel pipes. The latter is to set up the manufacturing facility on 2 acres.

The new facility would start with an investment of Rs 20 crore and aims to provide employment to over 150 people. The company will establish a steel tube plant by mid-2014, and also plans to set up a strip mill in the future.

Prithvi Group already has six re-rolling plants in Rajasthan. They are one of the largest steel manufacturers of Rajasthan.

With India’s growth trajectory lying more in the developing cities rather than the metros, Mahindra World City aims to create an environment that supports large, medium and niche businesses to grow and evolve.

Spread across 3,000 acres, Mahindra World City is a 74:26 joint venture between Mahindra group company Mahindra Lifespace Developers and the Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation, an agency of the Rajasthan Government.

The city is one of the 16 projects worldwide to be part of the Clinton Climate Initiative’s effort to create climate positive cities. Total investments into Mahindra World City have crossed Rs 1,000 crore
