This thread is dedicated to bus transportation in Trivandrum. News and pictures regarding development in introduction of new buses/services, with a special focus to those under JNNURM can be posted here.

The public bus transportation in Trivandrum & suburbs is mainly handled by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). Private buses were also introduced in the 1990s.

KSRTC had its origins from Travancore. The first city service was started in Trivandrum. The State Motor Service was inaugurated by His Highness Sree Chithirathirunal on 20.2.1938. There were 34 buses which were flagged off from the Kowdiar Square. Consequent on the enactment of Road Transport Corporation Act in 1950, Govt of Kerala formulated KSRTC rules in 1965 and the Travancore State Transport Department was converted in to Kerala State road Transport in 1965.

Trivandrum is the only city in Kerala where there is a centralised system of bus transportation for the city with depots and garages.

The city services of KSRTC operate from six depots

City
Vikas Bhavan
Peroorkada
Pappanamcode
Kaniyapuram
Vellanad.

The central city bus terminal is located at East Fort(Kizhakkekotta).

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Common Mobility Card (CMC), an initiative under the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP) to provide a common ticket for all types of public transport system, will soon become a reality in the state.

The CMC, similar to a credit card which functions as an e-purse, can be used in all modes of transport. Once introduced, one can travel across the country using a single card.

According to officials of Local Self-Government Department, the project will be implemented in the AC and non-AC low-floor buses in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, which had been introduced under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme, in the first phase.

The detailed project report regarding the implementation of the scheme is being prepared by Kerala State Urban Development Project, Rajesh Kumar Singh, secretary of LSG Department, said.

As a first step towards implementing the project, card readers will be installed in JNNURM buses.

According to UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL), a Government of India undertaking based in Mumbai and the technical consultant of the scheme, the CMC will be based on contactless smart card technology.

“CMC will be similar to the credit card. Just swipe the card in the card readers installed in the buses and the amount will be automatically deducted,” Singh said.

As per the concept prepared by UTIITSL, the CMC is an approach to integrate tickets so as to enhance seamless connectivity, which is a major bottleneck in promoting the use of public transport in the country.

Apart from public transportation systems like buses, trains, metros, ferries, taxis, autorickshaws, there are plans to use CMC for other application or transactions like toll collection on national highways, retail payments, utility payments and parking at city parks.

Unfortunately, this is getting things back to front! What is needed first is an integrated transportation authority for the Trivandrum Metropolitan area before a multi-modal travel card is thought of. Leave it to your bureaucracts to get it all topsy-turvy!

So what will happen to the New double decker, will it run together with the Old or we need to content with the old one. But it was pitty that we losed another double decker, TR 555 due to MV rule.

Yesterday I could see JNT122 non ac low floor and JNT20 volvo. I think, currently we have non ac s - JNT31 to JNT122 and volvos JNT1 to JNT20. As far as i can remember 120 non ac low floors are supposed to be the part of TVM fleet. So another 28 will be joining the fleet soon, am i right?

Now a days, the KSRTC officials are not seen anywhere in dailies with figures. Seems facts are not favourable for them to come up with comparisons as they were once doing. :ohno:

Sujith, as you said last week few more Non AC JNTs joined the fleet. Till last week KSRTC's inchakkal parking yard was house full with new JNTs at least 30(What I feel, may be more or less, not sure exactly), now the parking yard is empty. Now again started flooding with new JNTs in Inchakkal parking yard, i think we can expect few more buses in the coming weeks, Yesterday i saw few JNTs are parked in their Ashok Leyland showroom in Karamana, i think it is for registration.

Good to see a lot of new JNT AC/ Non AC buses everywhere in the city at any time. After the initial hiccups New generations buses started doing good busineess, most of the new buses introduced in almost all routes are full, particularly East Fort- Neyyatikara , East Fort - Technopark & East Fort - Pothencode - Venjarnmoode routes

Our Old Vintage Double Ducker bus has started running in the East Fort - Kovalam route. I saw the bus near Kovalam last saturday morning around 8:45, I think its a regular KSRTC vervice, route board was also placed. I dont think this bus is rented out for tourists.

The district administration on Monday said irrationally positioned bus stops were a major reason for traffic congestion and it would act in conjunction with the police, local bodies, the Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority to rectify the situation at the earliest.

As a first step, District Collector Dinesh Arora ordered that any new roadside construction, including bus stops and foot paths, should be sanctioned only after a scientific assessment of the rush hour traffic situation at the spot.

At a meeting of the Road Safety Authority on May 25, Superintendent of Police, Rural, P. Prakash said that unscientific positioning of bus stops was the main reason for the seemingly unending traffic snarls at Kallambalam, Attingal, Kazhakuttom, Balaramapuram, Neyyatinkara, and several other key junctions.

City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said haphazardly positioned bus stops impeded smooth traffic flow in the city.

For instance, there are more than 14 bus stops along the 8 km Ulloor-East Fort stretch alone, most commissioned without consulting the police and on a parochial basis. Most of the bus stops are near traffic signal lights, impeding traffic flow even at times when the signal is green.

IRC specifications

A traffic expert, quoting Indian Road Congress (IRC) specifications, said that the minimum distance between bus stops in urban areas should be at least 1.5 km.

On several congested roads, bus stops are located directly opposite to one another. Buses plying in opposite directions frequently stop at the same time on either side of the road, blocking traffic on the stretch for several minutes.

The IRC guidelines state that bus stops could be positioned opposite to one another only on wide roads divided by medians. Bus bays should be away from the road and nearer to waiting sheds.

Most bus stops in the city are located at key junctions. The IRC specifically states that bus stops have to be located at least 80 m away from junctions. There should be segregated bays and waiting sheds. However, these guidelines are observed more in the breach even on recently widened roads.

Laxity

Traffic enforcement in the district has apparently become lax over the years. Speeding of private transport buses, as part of the competition between bus operators to pick up the maximum number of rush hour commuters, is a major cause of accidents in the district. Private buses often stop suddenly on the middle of the road at will to admit or eject commuters, resulting in accidents.

Even at designated bus stops, most bus drivers rarely bother to pull their vehicle into the bus bay. The police rarely book motorists who violate road safety rules. Traffic enforcement is confined mainly to inspecting vehicle records at predictable times and on regular routes.

:banana:Hope Trivandrum will have a nice Traffic flow soon:banana:

^^New bus bays will be created after scientific studys ^^

Since VSS has assumed charge as the transport Minister, it will not be too high an expectation to push for the formation of a INTEGRATED TRANSPORT AUTHORITY for the city on the lines of TRIDA. This entity can bring about structural changes in the city transport sector by improving the functionality of KSRTC city services by bifurcating it from the long distance services thus allowing it to function in a optimal manner, bring about changes in relation to fare stages, route rationalisation, fleet utilisation, maintenance etc.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSRTC buses will continue to rule the roads in the capital city. The State Government has no plans to allow any more private buses in the city, Transport Minister V S Sivakumar told the Assembly on Thursday. He was replying to a question by MLAs M Chandran, B D Devassy, V Sivankutty and R Selvaraj. The KSRTC is presently operating adequate services in the city, the minister said.

"The KSRTC has arranged its services in an adequate manner, without causing inconvenience to passengers. In the capital city alone, the KSRTC plies 522 schedules from the Thiruvananthapuram City, Pappanamcode, Peroorkada, Vikas Bhavan and Vellanad depots. In addition to this, 119 AC/non-AC services are operated under the JNNURM scheme. Besides, KSRTC operates several services from the 16 depots across the district to the capital city,’’ the minister said.

Earlier, ‘parallel services’ operated by private parties had given headaches to the KSRTC, but with the State Government putting its foot down hard on unauthorised services, the KSRTC has been able to reduce its losses, the minister said. During 2007, when the ‘parallel service’ menace was at its worst, the KSRTC recorded daily losses of up to Rs 35 lakh.

But now, with the entry of unauthorised services to the city controlled, the losses have come down to Rs 20- Rs 25 lakh. The minister said stringent measures are in place to check ‘parallel services.’ At present, KSRTC operates adequate services in the outskirts of the city. The Motor Vehicles Department is taking strong action against operators running parallel services, including the slapping of fines. 18 assistant motor vehicle inspectors have been posted at six points in the district to control parallel services, the minister said. It appears that Kerala will have to wait some more to travel on KSRTC buses using CNG as fuel.

Replying to a question, Sivakumar said that the plan was under consideration, but no talks were held with any agency abroad regarding this. At present, the transport utility spends Rs 560 crore on diesel. The advent of CNG will bring this down by Rs 252 crore, 45 percent. However, this can properly be assessed at the current prices when CNG is made available in Kerala by 2012-2013, he said.

kanyakumari district and Trivandrum district are well connected geographically, culturally and historically even though they are in different states.

People of Kanyakumari district depends on Trivandrum for various day-to-day needs. Most of the towns/villages in Northern Kanyakumari district are close to Trivandrum city than some of the farther parts of Trivandrum district itself.

Before 7-8 years, both kerala SRTC and TNSRTC used to know these facts thers used to be several Ordinary bus services from various places of Kanyakumari district to Trivandrum

We had both KSRTC and TNSTC buses in good frequency in following routes before 6-7 years

1. Trivandrum Thengapattinam - 49 kms
2. Trivandrum Kollemcode - 38 kms
3. Trivandrum Thirparappu - 57 kms
4. Trivandrum Kulasekharam - 51 kms
5. Trivandrum Vellarada (via Arumana Panahcamoodu) - Intrastate via TN
6. Trivandrum Colachel (Via Karungal) - 55 kms
7. Trivandrum Colachel (Via Monday Market) - 65 kms (FP Service)
8. Trivandrum Manavalkkurichi (via Mondaikadu) - 62 kms (FP Service)
9. Kovalam - Erayumanthurai - 30 kms (coastal route)
10. Kovalam - Kanyakumari (Via poovar oorambu)
and few more... which i may missed out.

Later all of these buses were converted to FP due to some interstate agreement. WE never understood the logic behind converting 40-50 km maximum distance buses to FP only because they are in different states. the result is rates are hiked to FP rates.

Subsequently most of the daily office-goers started going to Kaliyakkavilai/Parassala in intra-state TN Buses and taking ordinary services from kaliyakkavilai.

So collection went down immediatly. and it leads to cancellation of inter-state routes to interior Kanyakumari district.
It seemed like only to cancel these routes they converted all these services to FP's.

Now most of these routes are non-existent or 2-3 services of TNSTC are running in a day. KSRTC services are just stopped.

both TN Govt. Kerala Govt. should not try to break the travel links between Trivandrum and interior Kanyakumari district which was part of Trivandrum district before 1956.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If you think that the police are only interested in penalising motorists who do not wear a helmet or a seat belt, you are mistaken. The drivers of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), whom we think are invulnerable to the law, are also under the police scanner.

Concerned over the alarming rise in the toll of accidents caused by the public service vehicles of the State Road Transport Corporation, the City Police have decided to hold awareness classes for the KSRTC drivers servicing in the city, to brush up their lessons on road rules and safety regulations. The first phase of the class will be held at the KSRTC depot at East Fort on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Drivers of the city depots, including East Fort, Thampanoor, Vikas Bhavan and Pappanamcode, are expected to attend the class, which is being organised in association with the Transport Department.

Even though awareness classes of the Transport Department are a routine affair, it is the first time ever that the City Police have taken up such an initiative. The figures they have on the toll caused by KSRTC buses in the city justify their initiative.

According to the figures available with the City Police, till May this year, 44 accident cases involving KSRTC buses were reported in the city, in which eight people died. The toll was 23 deaths out of 120 accidents in the year 2010 and 14 deaths in 109 mishaps, the year before.

K Raju, Assistant Commissioner, Traffic North, says the figures during the first five months of the year suggest no sign of dip in the graph, following which the City Police decided on the awareness class.

‘’KSRTC drivers are no less than any ordinary motorist in violating rules. Every day, an average of 250 KSRTC buses are captured by our surveillance cameras for violating speed limits,’’ the Assistant Commissioner revealed. He also said that such drivers are not spared by the police and they are regularly penalised.

The awareness class will give emphasis to various aspects such as adhering to road rules and legal consequences that a driver might invite for not abiding by the law. An expert session on stress management will also be incorporated in the class, taking into account the complaint of the drivers that most of the accidents were caused out of overwork.

^^ Seems that this service is via Nagarcoil.

It should be, why waste time through Kerala roads?. Only stretch which conforms to national standards, that too partly, for NHs now is only happening in Thrissur dist. The Ankamaly Cherthala stretch would remain the same. The remaining stretches which are planned for slated for development in to modern standards will take years. Whereas, you have a super 4/6 lane straight highway with no intersecting towns till Kavalkinar (Nagerkovil/Kanyakumari).

We need to speed up the 70 km connectivity from TVM to this NH 44 at the earliest. Now this route is the main corridor to TVM from other major cities of India. Most of the Bangalore Volvos are taking this route only.

For those who are driving down to TVM or tourists in cars/LCVs, another alternate route is to deviate from Madurai to NH 208 (old no); Kollam-Thirumangalam road and proceed to TVM via SH2 at Thenmala (Kulathupuza-Palode-Nedumangad-Kowdiar).

Recently I have seen in a facebook page, photograph of JNT 142 bus running in Peroorkada Depot. As per my understanding Trivandrum is allotted 20 AC + 120 Non ac totalling 140 Bus. So how come JNT 142 running in trivandrum. Also we have alloted 18 ACs as of now. So is this replacement of 2 AC with non AC bus or what is the story behind this?. Also I can see bus with only JN 139 etc running, why this anomoly and can we get a figure of how many bus really allotted for trivandrum as of now.

Hopefully, Vijay can do an encore performance of his earlier RTI with KSRTC. It's pretty obvious that our only Minister doesn't seem to consider this as a priority.

it was heard that since the patronage for non ac low floor is not good in kochi the rest of the fleet of non a/c low floor was taken to trivandrum, and a/c buses were taken to kochi...(not sure on this)

even kochi does not have much parking space..last time as i saw on my route to coimbatore, many buses were parked in the road for other KSRTC buses to get in the bus stand at 3AM

Non Ac - JNT31 to JNT150. right?

The total quota for Trivandrum is 150 buses - 30 Volvo + 120 AL LF Non-AC buses. You are seeing JNT142 because KSRTC has divided the bonnet number as JNT1 to JNT30 for Volvo and JNT31 to JNT150 for Non-AC. JNT21 to JNT30 is currently Vacant, since Volvo has denied delivery owing to pending payment. There are 20 Volvos running in Trivandrum now (2 buses are spare).

The JN139 bus you see is actually JNK139 - Low Floor Non-AC buses meant for Kochi are being run in Trivandrum temporarily. This is because many Ananthapuri Fast buses have been transferred to Pamba for the Sabarimala season - these Non-AC LFs will run instead of them. After the season ends, these buses would be transferred to Kochi.

AFAIK, it will be a pass-through facility only and will be used by both public and private services.

KSRTC's depots within the core city are wasting valuable real estate. They should be moved out to the suburbs and the land should be monetized to reduce the Corporation's debt as well as spur development.

Rajadhani, is among one of the many names doing the rounds for the proposed ring road service of the KSRTC for the city, aimed at linking rural areas of the district to the city.
KSRTC managing director K.G. Mohanlal told this newspaper that the KSRTC has not yet decided on the name for the service. The official announ-cement of the service would be made sometime next week, he said.
Sources said the ring road service will be launched in the district as a pilot project and soon extended to places like Kottayam, Thrissur and Malappuram.
The buses used for the service will have designer body with colourful exteriors, sources said.
Sources added that six bodies for buses for the proposed bus service were already under construction in workshops at Pappanamcode and Edappal.
A total of 10 buses will be pressed into service in the first phase in the city and later increased to 30 buses, sources said.
The circular service would start functioning by linking a couple of bus depots with the project.
The cost for the starting the service will be met from the budget allocation of KSRTC of Rs 56 crore, sources said.

Most probably that bus has been transferred to Ekm depot from Tvm Central or any other depots in Tvm city. When a bus is transferred to another depot, KSRTC runs it as a special service, so that it'll generate revenue on the way, instead of going empty and wasting fuel.

CM flags off Rajadhani bus service

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ring road bus service of the KSRTC titled 'Rajadhani' was launched in the city by chief minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday.

The service, linking urban and rural areas of the city, has been launched from the East Fort, Pappanamcode and Venjarammoodu depots of the KSRTC. These services would be circular in nature and would operate both in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions beginning from the respective station and ending at the same point.

After the success of the low floors, KSRTC should have introduced at least Non AC low floors for the Rajadhani service. Step by step, they could have converted their entire fleet into low floors, AC and Non AC.

KSTRC Schedule over the Kazhakootam - East Fort Via Bypass is highly inconsistent . There is absolutely no schedule adherence .Yesterday happened to see 4 Buses running as a convoy ( in a span of 1-2 minutes ) from EF to Kazhakootam via Bypass .The last one was Newly introduced Rajadhani Bus . I wonder whether KSRTC has any schedule at all in TVM local services .

In Peak times ie (Morning 08:00 to 09:30 ) from Kazhakottam to EF the schedules are erratic. 1-2 buses plys in a span of 05 minutes and no bus for next 20 minutes ...Same case in the Evening (Towards EF / Kazhakootam) . Needless to say the Auto people are fleecing the people taking advantage of this situation

Another matter of concern is the way in which the Low Floor A/c / Non A/c buses are maintained is well below standards . The A/c vents are full of dust and in non a/c buses the buses are not cleaned after they went to service i think

Also can anyone provide pointer where i can get schedule ( if any :) ) for buses plying in EF - Bypass - Kzhktm so that it can be shared across people at leat in net /forums so as to get aware of timings

Thanna thanna..

Trivandrum:
AC buses: 24, Non AC: 120

Kochi:
AC buses: 47, Non AC: 115

As per mathematical equations

If x number of buses generates an income of Y, then ~2x number of buses will generate and income of 2Y

Where Y = 10 Lakhs

Hence proved. ^^

Adding a pinch of salt:

Trivandrum buses are 80% subsidised while that of Kochi is 50% subsidised,so even if the ratio is same, the profit margin will be nearly double for JNT.

^^ Also, KSRTC as a whole makes a lot more money in Trivandrum by charging FP fares for Ananthapuri, Rajadhani etc, while ThiruKochi/Venad/Malabar etc are run at local fares.

Veruthe inganokke ezhuthiyittentha gunam?

if it is proportional to the number of buses,

1 way to think ,
24 buses generates 2 lakhs
so 48 buses can generate 4 lakhs

then low floor non a/c
120 bus - 8 lakhs
115 buses, as per above calculations -> 20-4 =>16 llakhs(but shouldnt have generated 16 lakhs because 120 buses can generate only 8 lakhs)

OR
if u calculate total no of buses(as u did)
x ->24+120 =144

k -> 47+115 = 162

definitely 2*144 >> 162
ie, k << 2x

ithil 2x um 2y um onnum evideyum varunnilla mashe..

these are the most common way to calculate
vittu kala..
njan ezhuthiyathu polum thettayirikkam because we dont know the fares, the routes, distances each of these bus travels and subsidy as one of the forumer above pointed out .. so enthuvenelum avam reason...

Then again, whenever KSRTC is forced to come up with facts instead of fiction, those numbers have clearly shown that the buses in Tvm are doing very well indeed. Guess it's time for another dose of reality, however uncomfortable it may be to some folks.

Yes, the numbers don't make any sense. With 24/30 in Trivandrum and 47/50 in Ernakulam, only 9 more buses are needed, not 14. I suspect Trivandrum has only received 20/30 as of date and Ernakulam 46/50.

Kochi has received only 42, not 47 as mentioned in the article. Trivandrum has received 24 - if not on road, JNT21 to JNT24 were spotted at the CW by my friend. So 8 for Kochi + 6 for TVM = 14 buses pending.

Hop-on, hop-off bus service to begin in two months

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state tourism department's hop-on/hop-off bus service plan is likely to become a reality in two months. Department officials said a government order has already been issued in this regard and the KSRTC, the implementing agency for the project, is likely to accept the final proposal in its entirety.

"I am yet to receive the government order but we participated in the discussions and we have agreed to the suggestions put forth by the department," said KSRTC CMD K G Mohanlal.

The working group had proposed that the service be started on an experimental basis in the state capital with five low-floor buses plying two routes. The buses will be branded with the 'God's Own Country' logo.

Three buses will be deployed in the 20-km long first route. The services in this route will start from East Fort (Padmanabhaswamy temple, Kuthiramalika, Chalai Market, etc) and proceed to Airport, Sanghumugham Beach, Science and Technology Museum, PMG, Napier Museum, Palayam (Church, Mosque, Temple), Statue (Secretariat, and SMSM institute) and culminate at East Fort.

Two buses will ply in the second route that will covering a distance of 46km. The services will start from Vizhinjam and proceed to Kovalam, Thiruvallam backwaters, Airport, Sanghumugham Beach, Vettukad Church, Veli tourist village and Akkulam tourist village.

The timings will be arranged in such a way that persons selecting one route could switch over to the other route at points the routes intersect. Also, assuming that the tourists will opt for the first four services in each route, 10% of the seats in the buses will be set aside for daily commuters. The tickets for normal passengers will be priced at Rs 50 and those for tourists, Rs 300.
"The Rs 70-lakh project is expected to breakeven in six months if the services manage to ply with 60% of the seats filled," said a department official.

This is going to be another one of those stupid ideas of GOK. How is it going to be hop on hop off for such a long distance. The operational area should have been limited to the POIs within core city limits. This is going to be just another ksrtc service with nothing to brag about. :bash:

Actually the owners of the bus is Trivandrum Corporation.
An Operate and Transfer agreement should have been signed with KSRTC before handing over.Corporation has the right to seek a part of the profit (80% by capital ratio) got by operating the bus as City Service (ONLY) within the city limits. Trivandrum Corporation should retain the right to guide and allot new routes as per the demand from the voting public.
Any damage to the busses should be recovered from the operator as done in other private contracts.

It's mystifying that these buses seem to pop in and out of profitability, from news report to news report. Since the KSRTC has no financial metrics worth their name, it's impossible to know the truth even via an RTI. Moreover, the greatest share of blame for the lack of profitability, if that be the case at all in Trivandrum, lies squarely with the operator who has no scientific route planning or revenue management in place. All our worst fears are playing out and I hope the same won't be true of the upcoming MRTS projects.

Hmm. Just like Ananthapuri services, a way to cheat common people of Trivandrum by charging premium rates which are not prevalent in other parts of state. Good that the patronage is less.

And really funny to see the adj ' Sundara Kuttappanmar'. It is a Stone age vehicle. These reporters need to see the new buses of BMTC. Anyway the main difference is BMTC is run by management graduates whereas we have ' Kadal kizhavanmar'.

Hope that some day KSRTC will be dead and we will get rid of the baggage. High time an independant transport authority is formed for the city.

I lived in TVM for nearly 21 years and later came to chennai with some time spent in coimbatore and also in vellore. As I see, the bus fares till the last year in TN was very less compared to TVM.

Chennai had a min. charge of Rs. 2.50, Vellore and CBE had Rs.2
At the same time, TVM had min fares at Rs. 3.50 or 4!!!

Why is that cost of public transort in a tier 2 city is more costly than a metro??
Evey time the diesel rates are hiked, the bus owners will strike. but their counterparts in TN won't. also, the fares remain the same in TN.

Untill recenly only the fares have been revised after 10 years!!!

Now the min. in chennai is Rs. 4!!!

also it has a seperate transport corporation - the MTC

When will Kerala bus bussiness make sense?????

sudheeshnairs
July 7th, 2012, 07:54 PM
Leave Chennai and TN which are not at the prime examples to compare with. The fares are more because of 'populist compulsions'.

The fares of KaSRTC & BMTC are comparable or higher in some services.

My point was regarding running same services in different parts of state and charging differential fares. Best example is the Ananthapuri and Thiru Kochi services.

+ 1.They are now least interested about these things. It doesnt need rocket science for displaying time tables at bus shelters .i dont know whether ksrtc has a time table now for low floor / city buses.Excellent example is buses via bypass. i have seen 6 buses running in a span of 3 minutes towards thampanoor last week while waiting for buses in opposite direction :-(

KSRTC is the only organization that I know of that has 10 times the number of routes as buses. No bus runs the same route twice in one day, and no two buses run the same route.
I think they make these schedules when they are high as kites.

They should be able to identify say 10 corridors crisscrossing the city on which they could run buses at 5 min interval using JNNURM/Ananthapuri/Manjakili/Pachakili service. Like the Montreal 10max service.

So the routes can be further collapsed to

Neyyatinkara -Thampanoor -Pattom -Medical College -Kazhakkoottam - Venjaramoodu
Kovalam-Bypass-East Fort-Pattom-Medical College-Kazhakkoottam -Attingal-Varkala
East Fort-Mannanthala -Vembayam-Venjaramoodu-Kilimanoor
East Fort-Bypass - Kazhakkoottam - Pothencode - Venjaramoodu - Kilimanoor
East Fort-Bypass - Kazhakkoottam - Chanthavila- - Venjaramoodu
East Fort - Pattom - Medical College - Chempazhanthi - Venjaramoodu
East Fort - Kesavadasapuram - Sreekariyam - Pothencode - Venjaramoodu
East Fort-Sasthamangalam -Vattiyoorkavu - Puliyarakonam
East Fort-Sasthamangalam -Vattiyoorkavu-Kachani

But running 4 buses in 9 routes itself is bad planning. They should be running at least two buses or four buses in a route. The problem is that instead of correctly identifying volvo routes based on demand (like more commuters from technopark / kovalam), they are trying to replicate all the TVM city bus routes onto volvo also

For the above routes also, it is better to have like this

Neyyatinkara -Thampanoor -Kesavadasapuram-Kazhakkoottam -Attingal-Varkala
Kovalam-Bypass-East Fort -Pattom -Medical College -Kazhakkoottam - Venjaramoodu - Kilimanoor
East Fort-Bypass - Kazhakkoottam - Pothencode - Venjaramoodu - Kilimanoor
East Fort-Mannanthala -Vembayam-Venjaramoodu-Kilimanoor
East Fort-Sasthamangalam -Vattiyoorkavu

But I believe there are other routes in TVM for volvo since I travelled once from Kochu Veli to Palayam in one. How to get all the volvo routes in TVM? I searched in net, but nothing was available

^^ - Not even a single route run using the Volvos has critical frequency, i.e. one bus at least every 10 minutes so that commuters are sure of getting a bus at any given time. Else all you get are incidental travelers, this defeats the purpose of substituting personal transport with public transit since a commuter can never plan his trip around the bus because of inadequate or unreliable frequency.

The only route with a bus even every 30 minutes is between Ulloor and Technopark because the Attingal buses (Route No: 666) also run along this way together with the Kazhakoottam services. Even this is too infrequent and unreliable. Most Volvos run on routes with only bus/route which means the frequency is once every few hours!

All of this is due to the fact that KSRTC stubbornly refuses to do any scientific traffic study or planning even 3 years after Rs 50 Crores of buses were introduced. And this despite the fact that such a study would have been 100% subsidized under JNNURM!!! :bash:

Just one word for them - INCOMPETENT!

I guess dropping Volvos from the above statement will still lead to a true statement. There is no CITY bus route with one bus every 10 minutes.

The need of hour is a seperate transport authority for capital region... KSRTC simply cannot handle the need of Tvm city anymore..

They simply don't maintain & don't like to maintain the schedule because they depute city bus services to transport sabarimala pilgrims during the mandala season to earn more profit.

^^ Not really, the only thing that makes more money per km for KSRTC than Trivandrum city transport is Super Fasts. Trivandrum city service earnings is Rs 28 per km, whereas ordinary services average less than Rs 20 per km.

Rajadhani services fail to break even (http://newindianexpress.com/cities/thiruvananthapuram/article576154.ece)

Things are not running smooth for the Rajadhani ring-road services launched by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) in the capital in April.

Faced with losses on most routes, the KSRTC is now thinking of scrapping many of the existing routes and introducing new ones for the yellow-painted buses. Going by the earnings per kilometre (EPKM) or simply what a bus earns every kilometre in terms of fare, the Rajadhani buses are running on a loss, Transport and Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed told the Assembly on Tuesday.

As per KSRTC norms, a bus has to ‘earn’ `35.79 per kilometre if it is to break even. ‘’If you look at it that way, the Rajadhani ring-road services are not profitable,’’ the Minister said.

Top KSRTC officials too said they had plans to devise new routes for the buses since most of the existing routes were loss-making. ‘’The buses are running on loss, except on the Venjaramoodu and Kaniyapuram routes. We are now planning to revise the routes after discussions with the MLAs,’’ K M Irshad, Chief Traffic Manager in-charge of Executive Director (Operations), KSRTC, said.

Ten buses were launched in Phase I of the project in April to link the city and outskirts. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had flagged off the services, which now operate on various routes linking East Fort in the city and immediate outskirts and between other regions such as Kilimanoor, Pothencode, Attingal, Amaravila, Kadakkavur and Neyyatinkara. At the time, the KSRTC had announced plans to roll out four more buses.

^^ The same ploy used by KSRTC to get FP fares from city services with a change in paint is now tried with Mofussil services. They have to make money in Trivandrum to subsidize losses elsewhere, I guess.

It is high time that TVM gets an all new Transport corporation.
The corporation can run all the volvos, low floor and ananthapuri and city services along with select intra district mossful services.

the volvo routes are fine. but they should not use one bus for many routes. if needed additional busses should be bought depending on traffic demand.

one bus - one route or 2 buses - 1 route (to and fro shuttle)...

it seems that the no. of busses are insufficient to ru at 10 min. interval in a same route.

if we see the general trend in the volvo routes, they seem to have it in intra district routes. Instead, they can have some key routes of high density which connect CBD to job sites like technopark to EF etc. with 10 to 15 mins. frequency....

One bus can be deployed in TVM - attingal - varkala - kollam route after feasability study. this can be for office goers and hence one service from kollam to TVm in morning and return in evening...... Later another one can be deployed in Airport - kollam route also (after feasibility study)

Reply to a query "Is there any direct bus to Salem from Trivandrum other than Private Airbus/Volvos via Nagercoil/Madurai?"

There is an SETC bus from Trivandrum to Karur. This bus will start from Trivandrum at 7:15 pm and reach Karur around 5:30am. The booking from Trivandrum to Karur only; not to Salem. You need not change the bus from Karur. All you need to take another ticket from the same bus to Salem as the same bus will continue to Salem ~after 30 mins. :)

Questions over transport officials’ stand (http://newindianexpress.com/cities/thiruvananthapuram/article588455.ece)

The decision of Transport Department officials to stay away from the crackdown on errant private buses operating in the city has raised many eyebrows. The inspection launched by the City Police on Thursday has unearthed serious discrepancies, including route and timing violations.

Notably, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), which raised a clarion call on the issue, has registered a huge increase in collections since the crackdown began. The police action followed a petition filed by the Chief Transport Officer of the Corporation. As many as 63 buses were found violating the norms on Thursday and 29, 16 and 9 were the figures on the following days, till Sunday.

The serious violators were those operating to Beemapally, Poonthura, Mudavanmugal, Thrikkannapuram, Venpalavattom and Sreekariyam. The increase in collection for the KSRTC on Thursday and Friday was ` 1,80,000 and ` 2,69,400 respectively. The depots that benifited from the police action included City, Pappanamcode, Vikas Bhavan, Peroorkada and Vellanad.

The police officials who carried out the inspections said several private buses were operating like parallel services in the city. ‘’A bus which was operating to Beemapally had to ply to Beemapally according to its permit. Several buses were found operating to profitable locations of their choice,’’ an official said.

‘’If we had the cooperation of MVD officials, it would have been helpful,’’ the official added. The cops are now assisted by the KSRTC officials in identifying the private buses violating rules. The KSRT Employees’ Association has demanded

checking on a regular basis to prevent the malpractices. ‘’Together, the police and MVD have 113 surveillance cameras installed at various locations in the city. Joint efforts by the police and the MVD could effectively put such illegal practices of private buses to an end,’’ said an office-bearer.

‘Counterattack’ by Private Buses

It is alleged that the private bus operators have approached the Transport Minister’s office to soften the stand of the police. The KSRTC management is also being pressurised by the racket to transfer two employees of the Corporation who took the lead in filing a complaint against the erring operators.
