Well, NBC has two units. The main one is located in SA ROAD (Sahodhara Ayyappan Road) next to Lotus Eye Clinic, near Kadavanthara Junction. The restaurant is located in same bldg, where Vodafone store is located. The second one is located opposite Shenoys Theatre in MG Road, just side to Cafe Coffee Day, where autos are parked.
Teapot is located in Peter celli street, located very near to Santa Cruz Basilica. The street is very famous, being one of the oldest European street and everyone knows it.
Well, near North Railway station, you have a couple of eatries. Royal court is a good one for Non veggies. Sree Krishna Restaurant is good for veggies. Both are located near the gate.
castelinokelvin October 17th, 2011, 02:48 PM Thank you for the quick and prompt reply bro! This was a real great help for me! Honestly!
If you could send me google link of this place marked then it wouldve been great!

Well Teapot is located in the side road behind St.Mary's School. Any doubt, the phone number is +91-484-2218035.
http://maps.google.co.in/maps?q=St+Mary's+Anglo+Indian+Girls+High+School,+Fort+Kochi,+Kochi,+Kerala&hl=en&sll=9.965723,76.242242&sspn=0.002172,0.003449&vpsrc=0&gl=in&hq=St+Mary's+Anglo+Indian+Girls+High+School,&hnear=Fort+Kochi,+Kochi,+Ernakulam,+Kerala&t=h&z=16
There you will see the signboard Petercelli Street, which is logically a continous part of Princess Street. Ofcourse the locals are pretty aware of the bldg. Its a main hub of Englishmen and Europeans.
And here is the review about Teapot
Located on Princess Street in Fort Kochi, The Teapot is an amazingly cute little tea shop with beautiful décor and a relaxed atmosphere. Situated in the heritage zone of Fort Kochi, a place that blends both historical and cosmopolitan temperaments, The Teapot is pretty easy to find with signboards guiding you to the restaurant.
What grabs your attention as you enter The Teapot is the huge, glass centre table supported by an old, elegant tea bush, about six feet in diameter. Tea is served in cups, mugs and by the teapot here. Complementing the theme of the place, teapots of various sizes are seen hanging from hooks all around.
While the mesmerizing collection of over 100 teapots and kettles will keep you engrossed, you will wonder at their immaculate designs and offbeat shapes taking you back to a bygone era. Paintings and art work also maintain the cup and the saucer as their muse. Interestingly, there’s even a collage made of teabags here, an artistic creation by a French artist. Tea chests double up as tables with some proudly claiming that they have been produced in India. There seems to be so much more than just tea on offer here.
What you get – What you get at The Teapot is quite obvious. As Sanjay who runs the joint says, “Right from the name of the shop to our décor and our menu, everything is connected to tea.”
The Teapot serves varieties of tea flavors. Tea with a hint of cardamom, Darjeeling tea, tea from the Nilgiris, Masala tea and even the with the local flavors of Kerala are available here. The cost varies according to the size of the pot. For example, a local blend would cost around Rs. 15 per cup whereas a special flavored tea would cost around Rs. 40 per cup. Iced tea is also served. Short eats like sandwiches, omelets, pastries and desserts like Death by Chocolate (must-try) are there for you to munch along.
Pancakes with banana, a slice of orange cake, banana and walnut cake, coffee cake and chocolate cake are popular choices here. For those looking for something Indian, there’s appam (hoppers) and vegetable stew as well. Fish and chicken based dishes with rice are there too for around Rs. 175. Vegetarian meals (rice and curry) cost around Rs. 125.
Our verdict – The Teapot is a world in itself. It’s a place where experimentation and expertise combine to give you a unique experience. It’s a cafe ideal for you to visit after a relaxed journey of sight-seeing in Cochin. You can take a break from the heritage walk and fortify yourself with a hot cup of flavored tea. Plus, it’s not a boring place to be in. It introduces you to the world of tea including strainers, tea cozies, milk jugs and sugar pots; the entire tea paraphernalia is on display. Drinking a cup of tea seems to have much more significance here. A perfect place to sit, sip and just relax! Service is average and parking space is available.

Well, about other eatries in Fort Kochi, a walk in Princess Street, you can decide.... Its almost like streets in colonial Paris lined up numerous European styled cafes and side eatouts.... It depends on your tastes and interests..... I recommend a few;
1. Mango Tree, located again in Princess street, on second floor of House of Yesudas Bldg (you can identify with Cafe Coffee Day board, located downstairs). It offers a unique feel as the second floor is built around trunk of a mango tree that starts from courtyard. You will have a feel, as if you are on a tree top...... The restaurant is famous for its fishes, mostly prepared in Kerala and Goan styles.
2. Kashi's Art Cafe, located at Burgher Street, at parallel to entrance of Princess Street near Tower Road. The Kashi's is extremely famous for its art gallery and the art cafe located inside its garden is equally famous for its chocolate cakes and pre-set Menu of the day, mostly Fused Indo-European dishes.
3. Koder House, located opposite Fort Kochi Gardens in Tower Road, is an iconic Bldg. If you are looking for Jewish food, this is the best place. Its the only Kosher Certified restaurant in Kerala and offers ethnic rare Cochin Jewish foods.
4. Upstairs, located opposite to Santa Cruz, is a good choice for those who love Italian foods, particular traditional hand stretched Italian Pizzas and Pastas that differs from what you get from Pizza Huts or Domino's.
5. Shala, located near to Teapot is a best option for tasting authentic Kerala food in Kerala style. They are located next door to Teapot.
6. Bristow House near Beach is extremely famous for live evening fresh sea and freshwater fish grills. Its equally famous for lavish buffets, but costs slightly higher.
7. Le Colonial, also near to Santa Cruz is famous for its too authentic traditional Portuguese dishes. Normally in India, we get Portuguese dishes in form of Goan food, which is Indianized version. This one offers traditional Portuguese foods. But again cost is upscale.
mohammedirshad06 October 18th, 2011, 07:52 AM Well, I used to say, its almost a Food Revolution happening in Kochi, past one year. Along with burgeoning number of restaurants and cafes, one segment that is growing parallel is Food Information sites in virtual world.
After success of Yummybay.com, Kerala's first multi-restaurant food ordering and delivery site, focused in Kochi, another online site for helping customers to know about restaurants, menu, costs, location and reviews
If you happen to know the name of a hotel or restaurant in Kochi recommended for its fine cuisine, locating it is easy with a search on Google. But if you don’t know it’s name here is an easy way to find it. Log on to www.dineyourfood.com.
Dineyourfood.com, an exclusive website on hotels and restaurants in Kochi, is an initiative by Anuj Chiramel and Melvin Mathew, two MBA graduates who intend to help food lovers by providing information on food outlets and help them make the choice of their palate. “We want to help foodies to get rid of all the confusion pertaining to where, what, when to dine when it comes to choosing a proper place. We expect food enthusiasts in the city to make use of this platform,” Anuj and Melvin said. “We mainly target internet-savvy people with high income,” they said. Searching on the site is so easy. “If you want to locate a food outlet on MG Road, you can find it by just typing MG Road on the search bar,” they said.
The website also helps find outlets offering different varieties of food such as seafood, vegetarian, non-veg, North Indian, continental and so on. The search results will contain names of hotels, contact numbers, menu and price, route maps, whether cards are accepted or not, parcel service, parking facility and review by visitors,” Anuj and Melvin said. Dineyourfood.com also offers advertising options for restaurants looking to generate more visibility among a targeted audience. “We have already listed 105 eateries and we plan to increase the number to 250 within a month. We will also cater to the needs of other major cities in Kerala soon,” they said.

It was started in Kochi and bulk of its restaurants as of now, is from Kochi region. Check their FB page or website.... They have around 200 restaurants from Kochi alone....
Ofcourse its nice to see they expanding... More choice for us and to understand where is where and what to expect from there
mohammedirshad06 October 20th, 2011, 04:51 PM Kristal Megamart, an initiative of Bangalore based Kristal Kitchen group, started its first multi-format food mart in Angamaly in Kochi.
Apart from wide range of packed and ready to eat food, the store's live cooking center has been one of the main USP of the store. The store has 4500 sqft of Meat mart, one of the largest in the city, where guests can either buy raw meat in packed meat or in cooked format, according the style and requirement of guests in any cooking style like Indian, Chinese, Arabian, Thai or European cuisines
The meat can also purchased with cut and marinated form also. The store maintains a live chicken store, where freshly cut chicken could be brought.
There will be 70 cooking counters, catering 70 guests at a time. The minimum time for cooking each dish is 10 mins and maximum to 50 minutes, which all are cooked in front of eyes as per preferred style based on instructions given by the customer to the cook.
A full fledged Juice/Ice-cream counter as well as live Tandoor breads counter will operate in the same premises.
The store is located in Karayamparambu-Mookanoor route near Adam Public School.

DileepKS October 24th, 2011, 01:18 PM We went to Cochin Majlis Food Mall for lunch yesterday.
Food and ambiance was good. I found a lot of footwear outside the Seesha room (where you smoke hookah). I don't smoke, and I was with family. So, didn't enter.
The guy told that lunch time is just for food, but the place comes alive in the evening. All Kabab/grill stuff is available only in the evening. Got to go one day.

Last time, I have been there... Its really a cool place, especially at Ground Zero location. But not as spacious at Gold Souk Grande. Maybe around 30 people at a time.
Well, I asked about prospects of any further store with Reji- the restaurant Manager, after a guided kitchen tour..... He said, they are considering a location in Kakkanad/Thrikkakara side soon. Thats a positive news for people like me!!!! Ofcourse the 3rd one will be soon at Edapally Lulu.....

No no... They are recruiting for Marine Drive unit. I don't know anyother Mateoo store is there or not... Barista doesn't mean the branded cafe. Its a term used for cafe-employees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barista), who prepares specialty coffees.

Holiday Inn Kochi presents a ‘Peshawari Food Festival' as an ode to the food there and as a treat for Kochiites with a taste for gastronomic experimentation. Say North-West Frontier Province and the images that come flooding are of hardy and unforgiving terrain, tough living, open skies and camp fires.
The food is non-fussy, there is space only for tandoors and food thus prepared. This style of cooking requires expertise since the meat is not accompanied by any sauce or gravy to pad up its taste quotient. The accent is on foods pre-marinated and cooked just before serving.
The cuisine of the North West Frontier boasts of influences of Baloch, Pashtun, Punjabi, Sindhi and Lahori cuisine. There are kebabs and biriyanis, besides other dishes to be savoured. On till Oct.30 from 7.30 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Good thing is, all the places have good business too. One thing is sure. The "cooked maida" is no longer the primary food here.

kuttettan November 20th, 2011, 02:21 PM A lot of us proud Kochiites and Keralites are happy when we hear stories abt maximum audis and BMWs and this brand and that brands opening in Kochi and so many malls coming up and we struggling or enjoying in foreign lands abroad or in India would be hoping to one day work in our home town Kochi which is would by that time be at par with singapore or new york or blah blah according to our dream and perceptions..and in that hope or due to request from retired parents, would've bought flats and villas in kochi where the real estate prices r increasing by the minute...
I am not going off topic, but i want us to take a minute an examine the reasons for where on the one hand we have restaurants and food brands opening faster than babies born in China, on the other hand the standalone restaurants( not the ones in hotels) closing down faster than they opened:-
Here are some real places that closed down and associated facts:-
1) Barista and Subway- international players closed down in Kochi not relocated, closed.
2) S36 high quality restaurant of Sreeshant in four shore road closed down.
3) Food village a mini food court in Jawahar nagar closed down
4) 365 chaat hut
5) Fan Fang
6) Barbeque 12 to 12 a chain with successful eateries in Kottayam, Thiruvalla and singapore closed
7) Naadan Kalavara in Bypass
8) Korean Fried Chicken in Jawahar Nagar run by real Koreans
9) Revolving restaurant closing for the umpteenth time.
10) Mojo Steak House in Palarivattom
the list can go on and on, but let me come to the point of discussion...
Some of us who visit Kochi during holidays from our IT company have all gone to these places and put good reviews about them...I have been able to speak to the people who invested in most of these places...
The core issue is demand in comparison to RENT
If we examine, however good the food is, the demographics of Kochi are made up of :-
1) Small time businessmen
2) Mega Rich businessmen
3) Doctors
4) Lawyers
5) Infopark guys mostly BPO and ITES who unlike their Bangalore counterparts are mostly junior BPO and software guys with lower incomes
Now unlike most newly developed urban cities, the habit of Kochi is different.
Five star hotels boom, but fine dine restaurants without liqour don't.... And in kerala only hotels can have liquor license (barring Cherai, Fort Kochi and Kovalam)...
The high rentals are for most part elevated not by actual demand but speculation of Kochi becoming a mega city and metro and all...
Similar fate has occurred for few cloth shops also but this won't affect other high turnover businesses like jewellery and all which are evergreen with us malayalee...
Non 5 star hotel , fine dine restaurants are essential for any city...what do u say?
My colleagues in bangalore have restaurant spaces with rs 20 and 30 per sqft in areas like koramangala, jayanagar etc on main road but here it has become 60,70, 80 and in lulu 300!!!! even in a mall in DLF city gurgaon, psqft charges were 110
Is this good for us and we are happy with dreams and seeing only audi and bmws and posh houses?

Here are some real places that closed down and associated facts:-
1) Barista and Subway- international players closed down in Kochi not relocated, closed.
Well, there are equally major issues with Barista and Subway other than rentals.... Barista was located in an such an open environment, which many of cafe-goers donot prefer. Why we go to a cafe, for a hang-out with friends with some privacy. What happens, when people from all sides can have a 180 degree view of us..... Even people strolling in Marine Drive could have seen which all people sit in Barista etc. There was no privacy which was one MAJOR FACTOR that pulled it down. Ofcourse cost is also there, but it was secondary.
Subway's case is very unique in Kerala. We Mallus are high value seeking people. We may appreciate a plate of oil drapped chicken pieces served in unhygenic thattukada for Rs 50 or 70.... But will not appreciate a slice of baked chicken wrapped in one piece of bun with few veggies for Rs 120, even though latter is much healtier than former. Even New Gen techies will not digest this fact.
Perhaps the only successful venture of Subway in Kerala, is at Technopark. Ofcourse its a prefect place to start such initiatives. Young techies, with no time even to breathe, may find solace in the concept of a stomach filling food that could be consumed in less time and a healthy option.
Subway's location in Kochi was a big mistake. A stand-alone store in heart of MG Road was a foolish decision. We have very little people who find it okay and this sect may be one in a family. Its not possible to cater one person alone in a family, hence people either may opt a take-out or refrain visiting.... But it would have worked well, if it was in a Mall or office environment saying Infopark or CSEZ etc. Ofcourse they may be coming up in Infopark SEZ, once new food court in Tejomaya gets opened.....
2) S36 high quality restaurant of Sreeshant in four shore road closed down.
Let me tell you, it was too horrible experience. I have personally visited the place 2 times, first in its Italian Avatar and then in its North Indian Avatar. The place, first of all, is too interior and only handful of traditional natives will know it. Since I was staying near to it, that time, I know the place. But lot of others didn't knew where it was at all.... And those who visited it, found it not even worth for half the money spend there..... Too bad food and too costly.... And no privacy......
Ofcourse just because its owned by Sreesanth, people will not flock.....
3) Food village a mini food court in Jawahar nagar closed down
Well, Food Village was not closed down.... They are changing its format from traditional food restaurant to more of cafe kind of thing. I personally know one of the guys involved. They will be reopening by Jan 2012
4) 365 chaat hut
Don't Know where is it nor haven't tasted from there....
5) Fan Fang
Its not closed down.... They changed the venue from there to 3 bldgs after it, opposite Oberon Food Court in Panampally Nagar, under new brand name Wong Kow. The Fan Feng had 2 partners and they had 2 branches in Mumbai too. The partners broke up. The Mumbai ones are taken over by one partner under same brand name, while Kochi one taken over by another under new brand name. They now function in their owned facility..... They are going to start 2 more units, one in Vazhakala soon and another in Thiruvalla.
6) Barbeque 12 to 12 a chain with successful eateries in Kottayam, Thiruvalla and singapore closed
7) Naadan Kalavara in Bypass
No idea about these ones....
8) Korean Fried Chicken in Jawahar Nagar run by real Koreans
The Koreans themselves left the place.... They were here in Kochi doing a research in CUSAT and started a business opposite to their residence at Abad Silvercrest in Jawahar Nagar. They operated under a licence of Indian partner and heard they involved in some issues..... Anyway, all of 4 have left Kochi.... The Indian partner is now looking for a suitable new operator to run the premises, as he too invested in the restaurant.
9) Revolving restaurant closing for the umpteenth time.
It was never closed, rather the ownership changed umpteenth number of time. Now the revolving Restaurant is owned by Hotspot 11 and its their 4th restaurant in the city..... The restaurant is functioning
10) Mojo Steak House in Palarivattom
They closed the Palarivattom, but opened in Gold Souk Grande. Heard, they might be opening one in Kakkanad soon, in a hotel.... Not sure
Well, I join with your other points..... Most of the prices in Kochi are too inflated, not on ground realities.... But over priced due to speculation.... Its too high.... And that keeps many things down..... But a downfall is equally required to correct this unusual price..... I feel, MG Road is overinflated.... Now with Metro works, things will come down there.... We had seen similar correction in housing sector, were things were even quoted at 6500 per sqft a few years back... Now things have come down.....
Well, some restaurants closed, but opened in a different format which attracts more.... Say I loved the place Something Else which was a quite, away from crowds with all kinds of food at affordable prices.... But it was closed down due to lack of crowds. But the guy reopened as Lokah in Byepass in a different concept, attracting lot of people and good crowd.... Dileep closed down his 20:20 restaurant in Padma, but heard he has taken ownership of Aluva Floating restaurant. If you look, there was a strong belief that it will be a big loss for firms operating in Esplande due to a Dutch Curse..... Dominos and Hot Breads ran away from there. Now one local restaurant is operating in the same space where Hot Breads was operating and he is making massive profits...... So unless you opt for smart pricing, smart marketing, things will not work out.....
Lets hope for the best......

mohammedirshad06 November 30th, 2011, 08:02 AM Another International Restaurant Chain keeping Kochi in its radar to start
AmRest Holdings SE, the largest restaurant operator of chains such as Starbucks, Applebee, KFC and Burger King in Central and Eastern Europe, is setting shop in India for its fine dine Italian restaurant, La Tagliatella.
It is looking to open 5-10 outlets between Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Pune in 2012 with an investment of €2 million (Rs13.89 crore) per outlet, Henry McGovern, chairman of the advisory board, AmRest Holdings, said.
“India is a quickly evolving country with a huge emerging middle-class. The good news for us is that the Italian food is highly accepted in India, and that’s what attracted us. There is a lot of opportunity at the higher end that we think no one really has fulfilled,” McGovern said. The Italian restaurant has adapted its menu for India, adding a broader vegetarian list and sauces that are free of beef stock.
The company that runs 665 restaurants in two segments — casual dining (La Tagliatella, Applebee’s and Pizza Hut) and quick service (KFC, Burger King and Starbucks) — across US, Spain, Hungary, Russia, Czech, Poland, France, Bulgaria and Serbia is looking to be a multi-brand restaurant company in India and is in talks with some brands, McGovern said but refused to share details.
“We will become a multi-brand operator in the country. I am not sure when that will be at this point,” he said.
Under AmRest Restaurants India Pvt Ltd, which will be headed by Snehal Kulshreshtha as its country head and managing director, the company will test different retail formats for La Tagliatella across malls, high streets and standalone stores. Cities like Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Indore, Agra, Jaipur, and Kochi will also be on the company’s list to open stores, Kulshreshtha, said.
McGovern said in India AmRest will start sourcing raw materials and other supplies locally in a year’s time from operations. Very soon, he said, the company will also set up a research and development centre in India, but did not specify the location. AmRest acquired the La Tagliatella trademark and franchise business from Restauravia in Spain this year. In 2008, it had acquired the second-largest franchisee of AppleBee’s chain in the US.

mohammedirshad06 December 4th, 2011, 07:29 AM Tales of Kochi Foodies
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/article_horizontal/article-images/Sanjay-Menon,-Lia-Mathew,-S.jpg.crop_display.jpg
Sanjay Menon, Lia Mathew and Ranjana Karunakaran, three young friends since kindergarten, were chattering over a cup of coffee at the Cocoa Tree in Kochi.
Sanjay owns a technology-based company in Thiruvananthapuram, while Lia works with Amity and Ranjana is in the health sector. Food has always been a common denominator in their chats and opening a restaurant had been a long cherished dream.
“Procrastinating about plans hardly helps in turning them into reality. Why don’t we start a restaurant? It’s now or never,” Sanjay had exclaimed during that meeting.
Today, he, along with his pals, is the proud owner of Kahawa — Something’s Brewing, one of the most happening coffee shops turned bistros in Kochi.
Joining the three friends is another close friend of theirs, Sreenath, a lawyer who also decided to indulge in the experience of being the owner of a food joint.
Today most young foodies are not content with just satisfying their palates, they want to fulfil their passion by opening their own restaurants.
Remember Prithviraj and Samvrutha Sunil’s coffee shop, Casablanca, in the movie Thirakadha?
Says Sanjay, “We are all in rather hectic professions but every time we get together in our bistro we get a huge thrill. With a sports floor attached to our shop, we are now a favourite haunt with the young crowd. And now that we have expanded the coffee shop turning it into a bistro, offering a hot and delicious daily menu together with coffee and breads, even the older crowd has started looking at Kahawa differently.”
For young journalist Suneesh, it all began with his transfer from his native place of Cherthala to Ernakulam. Establishing a first-of-its-kind restaurant called Shap Curry, Suneesh brought to the city a horde of spicy dishes straight from the toddy shops to the tables of a family restaurant.
“It was my desire to share some new, fresh and tasty dishes with my friends and this was what made the start my own restaurant. Even now, commercial interests are seldom my concern but there are things that I don’t compromise on. I don’t use a refrigerator so that no food is left over and if something is left, I distribute it among my friends the very same day."
"I go to the market every morning to buy the freshest stuff available and this is prepared in the traditional stove using firewood,” says Suneesh, who runs the restaurant with the help of his family and visits his outlet many times a day from his office.
At Zam Zam, the most sought-out restaurant in Thiruvananthapuram today, you might bump into a handsome young man whose young age makes you wonder how he sits at the owner’s desk!
Mohammed Abdul Nafi, an MBA graduate has teamed up with his father to broaden the network of well established restaurants by employing some unique marketing tactics.
“I have spent time in the hotel industry ever since my school days and therefore I have but naturally, developed an innate taste for the hotel business. With my dad, creating a new restaurant is like reinventing the wheel. Hence I decided to use my marketing strategies to develop the firm. With god’s grace, we have very recently opened new branches of Zam Zam in Kozhikode and an outlet in the capital city,” he sums up on a triumphant note.
Gastronomic passion

Malayaali December 15th, 2011, 08:36 AM Juicy, smoky, meaty (http://www.thehindu.com/life-and-style/metroplus/article2714496.ece)
‘Kebabistan' evokes images of kebabs, kebabs and then some more kebabs. It is, indeed, kebab lovers' paradise.
This tiny eatery, behind Harbour View hotel, has earned itself a dedicated fan following which swears by it. That is a good excuse to check out Kebabistan and find out what makes it tick. The joint serves North Indian cuisine. As the name suggests it specialises in kebabs and hence we pass up the soup-starter part of the meal. Chef Basanth Kumar recommends half a platter of kebabs, the mixed platter of chicken kebabs (Rs. 400). The half platter is what we get and what a filler it turns out to be.
With 18 pieces of four flavours it is a big platter, “we have a full platter with 36 pieces in more flavours” chips in the manager of the eatery, Varghese. He, earnestly, disagrees with the suggestion that a full platter might be enough to feed a small army. The flavours move from spicy to non-spicy. Done to juicy perfection, couple with the faint smoky taste the kebabs were irresistible. But the green of the Hariyali kebab was a tad intimidating.
Then came Chicken Punjabi (Rs. 180), Chicken Hyderabadi (Rs. 150), Paneer Tikka Masala to be had with a variety of Indian breads such as tandoori naan, tandoori kulcha and tandoori paratha. Chicken Punjabi tasted like a derivative of the good old butter chicken of the dhaba and went perfectly with naan. Chicken Hyderabadi was green and spicy. There was hint of green chillies and pudina, boneless again and finger-licking delicious.
The paneer tikka masala (Rs. 150) had paneer tikka with the usual veggies – capsicum, onion and tomatoes in gravy giving good company to the tandoori paratha, which by the way is done very well, it can be had without accompaniments too. Then came the showstopper – the extremely unassuming dum biryani (chicken, Rs. 120). It can give competition to any ‘branded' biriyani available in the city. There are sweets by way of desserts – gulab jamun, caramel custard etc. But we'd rather let the taste linger.
The portions are generous and the staff helpful, however the place is small. If you have to wait, the food justifies the wait. The restaurant is open from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. (lunch) and 6 p.m. – 12 a.m. (dinner).
Malayaali December 15th, 2011, 03:00 PM Dishing out Arabian delicacies (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/lifestyle/dine-o-mite/dishing-out-arabian-delicacies-740)
Anybody who has visited Kozhikode for any length of time would be acquainted with the warm hospitality, tasty biriyanis and lip smacking halwa that is an integral part of the Malabar region. Enjoy the same hospitality and taste when you step into Rolexia restaurant situated in Palarivattom, Kochi. The shiny steel exterior leads to an immaculate interior with seating in comfortable chairs and serves authentic Malabari and Arabic cuisine. Owned by Nazar and brother Siraj, it has already attracted a loyal client base without any marketing or advertising gimmicks
Initially started by Nazar’s father forty two years back, it has since evolved into a restaurant that offers the most variety of mutton dishes numbering around fifteen of which seven are available every day like the Mutton varavu or the mutton with dal, the recipes of which are prepared by Nazar himself. Pathiris are what sell the most here with varieties like the Moodhi patthiri (thin dosa like), kadai patthiri (made of coconut and onion), kakka patthiri as well as the thenga patthiris being favorites. Next on the list are a variety of biriyanis served with raitha, coconut chutney and vegetable or dates pickle. Another exotic dish is the Mathi kurumullakkuitichatu which is Malabari favorite done in thick gravy and priced very reasonably. Another favorite is the Puzhangaloroti Fish or prawns that are a full meal in itself.
The smell of mutton and chicken prepared in Arabic versions invade the nose and arouse hunger pangs. Take your pick from riyash (grilled Mutton Ribs), Arabian grilled fish, Chicken alfahm (charcoal grilled chicken), the machboos chicken or fish or the arayes (meat stuffed khubs). These are all the recipes of Mymoonath, Nazar’s wife who was in the Gulf for some time. She says, “The ingredients are all sourced from the Gulf and are authentic.”
A variety of Arabic salads like the tabouleh and fathoosh are very popular among visitors. Connoisseurs of Malabari snacks like the muttamala or the Sri Lankan dessert vattalappam can enjoy the authentic tastes along with health desserts like the Ragi pudding. The décor and design of the interiors have been done by Nazar himself who is planning to introduce more varieties of tea and juices in the coming months.

dhanesh2k December 18th, 2011, 12:46 PM Eat your cake, and have your health too
It’s almost Christmas time, and bake houses in the city have started stocking different varieties of cakes, ranging from the classic fruitcake to the heavily iced sponge cakes to plum pudding to Christmas fruit pie to cashew and almond rocks. But what about the fat, sugar and calories that go with it? Is it healthy to eat cakes?
CGH Earth, popular as Casino Hotel at Willingdon Island is introducing ‘healthier’ cakes this Christmas. They have come up with ‘zero transfat matured plum cake’ which uses pure butter instead of transfat in the form of vanaspati, the content that usually goes into cakes. Says, Erin Louis, the general manager of the hotel, “We always stood for healthier, eco-friendly aspect of life. Our basic motto itself is clean, green and healthier earth which we try to adapt in the food production as well. So we thought about an alternate way of baking cakes.
”Erin says the reason why bakers and households opt less for butter cakes could be because they have lesser shelf life compared to ordinary trans fat cakes.
Chef Kumar of Casino says cakes baked in the hotel are a healthier substitute to classic matured plum. According to him, the zero transfat version has all the goodness and none of the transfat. Of course all the customary ingredients remain the same - raisins soaked in honey, candied ginger flakes and caramelised orange, accented with a hint of vanilla and nutmeg for a smooth flavor and plush texture along with butter.
Using palm sugar instead of ordinary sugar during the baking process of cake is another health tip the hotel group shares with us.
Erin describes the process of making cakes in the ‘Casino’ kitchen. “Our Christmas cakes are always made in advance. Dried fruits of the best quality are procured in the beginning of the year from Northern parts of the country. They are cleaned, washed and dried. The fruits are then cooked for 15 - 20 minutes with honey, sugar, salt, lemon juice, lemon rind, candied lemon peel, and candied ginger peel. This mix is left to cool off for a day. After cooling the fruit soaking is carried out, nutmeg is sprinkled generously over the fruit mix. Once the entire mix is sprinkled with nutmeg, bottles of rum are poured onto the fruit mix. The mix is then stored in barrels and left to mature for four months. Upon maturing, the fruit mix is added to the cake batter, consisting of flour, sugar, butter, ghee, eggs, caramel syrup and vanilla essence. After baking, the cakes are left in ‘temperature and humidity controlled’ settings for another three months to further mature, after which, they are ready for packing and distributing.
”Casino is also introducing native flavours to cakes. Jackfruit powder cake , cookies made of whole jackfruit are the two varieties.http://expressbuzz.com/cities/kochi/eat-your-cake-and-have-your-health-too/344248.html

Fortkochi equals fun, peace, good food, and beach. What if there are extra reasons to drop in at Fortkochi? For Kochiites, ‘Kashi’ art cafe needs no introduction. A favourite to Kochiites and the many foreigners who visit Kochi, Kashi always makes sure that they are in the news for all the good reasons. Kashi is located at Burgher Street, in the heart of Fortkochi. Started in the year 1997, Kashi is now one of the most sought after coffee shops in Kochi!
They excel in continental cuisine. Sandwiches, pies and cakes that are available here cannot be replaced. When you drop in here the next time, make sure you do not miss out their cold coffee. Chocolate-lovers are going to fall head over heels for this one. Their yummy chocolate cake topped with chocolate sauce is heaven. Need more? Try their French toast with honey and fresh breads.
What makes Kashi ‘number one’? Definitely the yummy food, peaceful ambience, reasonable rates, location, good crowd, and definitely good friends to top it all! This makes us say that driving all the way to Fortkochi for Kashi is worth it. The cafe is open every day from 8.30 a.m to 7. 30 p.m. Haven’t you tried Kashi yet? Wait no longer. Check out this awesome place. You would fall for it! Guaranteed!
vjkrishn December 24th, 2011, 11:49 AM Baking Beauties
Looking at bakeries stocking up cakes, one would imagine that baking cakes at home for Christmas was a fading tradition. Far from it, we find youngsters taking a delight in baking, and have even been successfully running kitchen factories, catering to the needs of their friends, families and acquaintances.
For example, there’s 25-year-old Anna Raju who bakes delicious cakes from her kitchen. For this kindergarten teacher, baking has always been a passion, she says. “I think it must have been how the house smelt whenever my mom baked a cake that got me so interested in it,” she says. While most tend to bake plum cakes for Christmas, Anna makes a variety of cup cakes in flavours ranging from vanilla to chocolate to red velvet. Also, the cakes have designs of stars, Xmas tree and santa caps.
Anna’s cakes are so tasty, that she soon started getting corporate orders as well, which she bakes herself from her Kacheripady home. So what’s the secret behind her success? “The only thing I take care is not to cook when I am in a bad mood. I think how one feels is very important and adds a lot of value to the taste of the food,” she says.
Ask her if baking cakes has gone out of fashion, and Anna says that the trend is quite the opposite, with many younger people baking their own cakes these days. “There’s a lot of hype surrounding baking, but it is actually one of the easiest things to do. Once people realise that, they really take to it,” she says.
Also, she thinks there is a premium to home-made cakes during Christmas. “Many households bake cakes themselves, and those who cannot, hunt for places where they can get home-made cakes. You have to appreciate that effort,” she says.
Much like Anna, Liya Mathew also bakes cakes and pies along with her father and younger brother from home, and together they run the Kahawa Bistro in the city. “Both my parents have been excellent cooks, and my dad, being very well-travelled used to make a variety of dishes. I think I got my passion from there,” says Liya, who is in her late 20s.
From pineapple pies to chocolate fudge cake to molten lava cake, there’s a whole range of delectables she makes. “Rather than selling cakes in kilos, I’ve realised it is better to serve them in smaller quantities. That is what they do abroad. You can experiment more that way, and try new things. That trend is slowly coming here too,” she says.
For Christmas this year, Liya has plum cup cakes and ginger bread man cookies. The cup cake of a sizeable amount is priced at Rs 30 each.
25-year-old Ann Rekha is another cake enthusiast who runs a very successful kitchen factory, ‘Little Wonder’ from her Rajaji Road residence. It was her husband who goaded her to run it as a business, and now Ann makes a great variety of cakes, from vanilla to butterscotch to chocolate, with edible Christmas decoratives.
The key attraction is the custom-made cakes she makes on order. Many of them are so good to look at that the buyer feels a pang to cut through it. “That is the biggest compliment to me, when they tell me that they don’t have the heart to cut it. This happened when I made the ‘Angry Birds’ mobile game on a cake. The people I made it for were delighted,” she recollects.
While the passion for cake-making is there, Ann says it is really the art involved in it that draws her to it. “Whenever I travel abroad, I see the patterns and designs there and try to bring it to Kochi,” she says. All of them find tremendous encouragement from near and dear ones, amply demonstrated by the orders that pour in for their cakes. Naturally, all three are delighted with this sweet smell of success.

As Malayalis, we have the inherent ability to survive in any part of the world. Often, we bring back with us food from the places we have travelled to.
At the same time, we are also host to other communities that now call Kerala home. We have welcomed their food as heartily as we would a hot plate of fish curry and rice.
A visit to Jeff Foods in Thoppumpady is a prime example of the camaraderie between the different communities in the city. Sporting a long white beard, Zoyeb Ebrahim has a distinguished air.
As he begins to speak, his friendliness and warmth take over. While he was raised in Kerala, his sons, Hussain and Hatim grew up in Mumbai.
They began their catering business in 2006 in a decorated Maruti van, serving home-made food to the locals.
Today, they have a very popular joint that serves traditional Bohra Muslim versions of biriyani, kebabs and cutlets. Their signature bhuna ghosh is sumptuous and the mutton biriyani melts in your mouth.
The small restaurant serves hungry diners from all over town and also at parties. A favourite with large groups is the tandoor stuffed bakra, which is an entire goat grilled and served on a bed of rice with sheekh kebabs and boiled eggs.
Every dish on the menu is home-made and each recipe is perfected by the family. “No curtains, no screens; our kitchen is open for our customers to see what goes into their food.” says Zoyeb with a flourish of his hand. What does the family think about Kochi? They say it is their home; as good as Mumbai, often better.
The relationship works both ways. Many Keralites return home with edible souvenirs. A group of enterprising Malayalis from Mumbai are behind the beginning of Haji Ali at Jos Junction.
Owner, Faisal is a frequent visitor at the Haji Ali Dargah near Worli, Mumbai and has named his restaurant after it. The quiet and unassuming Abdul Muthalib, the man behind the joint’s unique recipes, originally worked at the famous Haji Ali Juice Centre in Mumbai for about 15 years.
Today he has returned with his colleagues to re-create those time-tested recipes for Kochiites. The fresh fruit and cream with kiwi, mango, strawberry and custard apple are a unique and delightful treat.
The range of vegetarian sandwiches is a hit; including the bhaji grill, made from a thickened pav bhaji masala and cheese. For a spicy alternative, one could try the Schezwan grill. To wash the sandwiches down, Haji Ali offers a variety of shakes and juices as well.
If you’re in the mood for a hearty and delicious north Indian meal that is far lighter on the pocket, there is the modest Hotel Vishal in Pullepady junction serving vegetarian favourites like paneer burji, pyaz parathas and dal fry.
Despite the fact that no dish on their menu costs more than Rs 60, the young boys that cook, serve and clean the place, offer one a treat to remember. Originally from Patna, the boys have been living in Kerala for the last 10 years.
They came to Vishal Hotel less than two years ago and were engaged somewhere else. Soon, the theme of the menu changed from idli-dosa to dal-roti.
But the boys prefer Kochi. “The people here are good to us. A lot of them speak Hindi, too!”

Hussain Z. (centre) with his father Zoyed (right) and brother Hatim in their hotel in Kochi
Hussain Z. Cochinwala loves to do two things — play snooker and serve food — the first being a passion and the latter he regards as an opportunity to be with his family.
The 20-year-old, while not taking part in competitions, is keen to offer a helping hand to his father Zoyed and brother Hatim in their hotel business in Thoppumpady in Kochi.
He is now the second ranked junior snooker player in Kerala, who has represented the State at various national competitions.
It was four years ago that Hussain developed a liking for the sport during his school days in Mumbai. However, it was only after returning to Kochi that he got a chance to be closer to the sport as well as his family.
“After my schooling, I came back to my family in Kochi and that also gave me the opportunity to go to the indoor stadium and play snooker.
I became interested in the game and loved being near my family, who were very supportive,” said Hussain, who went to Chennai to get a better feel of the game and was trained by former player Style Vijay of the Tamil Nadu Billiards Association.
Hussain has also played in main draw pool championship in Delhi and in the Western India Open Junior Snooker Tournament, conducted by Yasin Merchant in Mumbai.
The boy, who considers world champion Pankaj Advani his icon, has fond memories of playing against him during a junior open in Mumbai and one can see his smiling picture with Advani, hanging on a wall in his hotel.
“That was a dream come true for me, I got an opportunity to play and take a picture with him. He is my inspiration in the game,” Hussain said.
Hussain has been the state number two for two consecutive years but could not take part in the competition last year as he had accompanied his father on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
“Now I’m with my family, helping them whenever I’m free and also finding time to play. It keeps me a lot happier. I’m planning to study hotel management, but I’ll continue snooker,” he added.
Cochinwala! i love that :)

Angmo, Tenzin Losel and Chef Tenzin Gimgee at the Tibetan Chef's restaurant at Fort Kochi
A love story sits pretty behind the opening of ‘Tibetan Chef's Restaurant' at Santa Cruz Basilica, Fort Kochi. Love, the invisible ingredient, that gives food its heavenly taste is the strongest seasoning and the tangy garnish in this tale of food and love that spans across two nations.
With a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his lips, Chef Tenzin Gimgee keenly narrates the story that led him to set shop here.
Tenzin who is a Tibetan runs Amdo café, in Leh, Ladakh with his Tibetan wife and two kids. So far so good. But the twist in the tale is when his brother- in- law, Tenzin Losel falls in love with a Ladakhi, Angmo, an Indian, and wishes to marry her.
Good samaritan
The lovers faced ire from family members over their different nationalities. An Indian and a Tibetan. So away from the wrath of elders, the lovers come far away to Kochi, to live here till angers die down and the families reconcile to the fact of greater love.
That's when large hearted chef Tenzin steps in and comes to his brother-in-law's rescue. He sets up a Tibetan food joint and hands over its running to the lovers.
So love is in the air in the restaurant and that simply makes the ambiance and the cuisine magical.
Tenzin Gimgee oversees the kitchen. He plans to shuttle between Leh and Kochi running his two restaurants. “When it is the season here it is off season there,” he says, something that works out just perfect in his case.
Sitting under an orange marquee, a typical Tibetan tent called ‘kur', the restaurant has a colourful quaint look. A narrow walkway leads up to the place, ensconced between houses and the Kathakali Centre. “It's a boon being next to them,” says Tenzin as he gets his customers before and after a show. His is a busy place as he dishes out staple hot dumplings or momos.
There are four types of momos, says pretty Angmo, with the oriental gentleness typical of people from the hills. Angmo's sweet voice and delicate ways will have you all ears as she explains the intricacies of a cuisine she too has learnt from the two Tenzins.
Steamed, boiled, fried and half fried are the different types of momos served here. The half fried ones are steamed and have pan fried bases, giving them a soft and crisp texture and a pied look. The fillings can be beef, chicken or mutton mince and the vegetarian ones are filled with cheese.
Fresh noodles
Tenzin says that the unique thing about his restaurant is that they only make fresh, handmade noodles. They are flat and thin, also small rectangular bits and a thick variety too! Noodles are served sautéed with mixed vegetables or meat. “We serve them cold and fried too with sauce,” he adds.
Milk, cheese, butter and meat form the main diet of Tibetans. A local beer made from rice is had along with food, but that's not served at the restaurant.
Potato bread on the menu is a typical any-time food of the region. Potato mash is sandwiched between kneaded flour and pan fried gently, another version of our aloo paratha. It is served along with butter tea.
Strangely Tibetan tea is salty and is boiled in milk, garnished with a generous dollop of Yak butter. It is blended at speed till frothy.
Roasted chickpea flour, “it's called ‘sattu' here,” is another staple. Santu is a hot soup made with this flour, with meats or cheese tossed in it is had almost daily at any time of the day.
Yak meat, the staple meat, is tough and heavy and effective against the cold and fish is not a part of their food at all.
Another surprising fact about Tibetan food is that they have no desserts. “They don't like it,” says Tenzin, about the culinary taste of his countrymen. He is extremely familiar with India and its people having lived here for 20 years. Tenzin came to Dharamsala as a 26-year-old and studied there for three years, after which he worked in many Chinese restaurants before starting his own enterprise. He has lived in Bangalore, Gaya, Chennai, Leh and now Kochi.
As curious foodies wait eagerly, lounging comfortably on low cane chairs and tables covered with colourful tablecloths, bright plastic flowers nodding in the breeze and posters of Patola Palace, Lhasa in the background, Tenzin is only too happy serving and answering queries about a cuisine from the highest region of the earth, served in our beautiful town by the sea.

We found out the best Momos haven in the city. And for those who have not been acquainted to momos, they are a Chinese dish made out of simple flour-and-water dough and filled with veggies/chicken/meat. They are steamed and hence healthy as well. Kochi always lacked good momos places, and here is a brand new momos shop which you must try out!
Shifu Momoz is located at Panampilly Nagar Shopping Complex, and you can relish on some yummy momos here. They have chicken and veg momos. The prices are completely worth the momos and we ensure you that you shall return back happy. Here are the rates (to make things easier)! Veg momos are charged 20 rupees (half plate) and 40 (full plate). Chicken momos are priced 30 rupees (half plate) and 50 rupees (full plate). You also get chicken and veg chowmein as well, all priced below 50 rupees.
This small shop has a Kung Fu Panda effect to it. Wondering why?? Kashyap Saigal, who owns Shifu Momoz says that Kung Fu Panda has inspired him and hence you get to see Kung Fu Panda pictures and paintings there. “I’ve always felt that Kochi lacks good momo places. I love momos as well. I wanted to try how Kochiites would welcome momos, and I must say that the response is awesome”, said Kashyap.
The shop is open from 3. 30 p.m and you can drop in anytime till 9. 30 p.m. You also get a home delivery.

Avinandan Banerjee, Operating Partner of Sports Connoisseurs, a franchise partner for Manchester United's diner-cum-bar in Bangalore: “The thematic restaurant, replete with a dug-out area, sky box and a players' tunnel, was set up by Man U to offer a direct touch-point for consumers to relate to the club.”
The 12,000 sq. ft. restaurant in Bangalore is the world's largest Manchester United restaurant. Apart from serving finger food, pasta, pizza and drinks, the restaurant also dishes out various memorabilia and merchandise.
“We usually have 200-300 visitors each day. On Man U match days, it goes up to 400-500,” says Banerjee. New Year's Eve saw the place brim with over 750 people.
Manchester United is considered the most popular premier league club in the world. In India alone, it has an estimated fan base of 20 million. Interestingly, the club's fan base does not have a male skew, says Banerjee, who has hired a woman to head the restaurant's marketing. “Her passion for the game and the club was phenomenal. We just had to hire her.”
Manchester United cafes are also present in Mumbai, Delhi and Goa in association with the Mumbai-based Mirah group. The football club is eyeing Kolkata, Mysore, Manipal, Chennai, Chandigarh and Kochi.
The Liverpool club is also planning to set up cafés and lounges across the country.

is it possible to get resto-bar licence in keala without having a hotel?
mohammedirshad06 January 20th, 2012, 09:52 AM is it possible to get resto-bar licence in keala without having a hotel?
I too have the doubt, as Govt policy is to allow only liqour licence to 4 star HOTELS and above from 2012 onwards.
Perhaps the only relaxation may happen in Tourist enclaves like Kovalam, Fort Kochi, Alleppey etc.... Still, chances are rare for full liquor licence, other than beer palours. After all its a matter of govt policy, which I don't think will be relaxed to one or two brands.
But equally possible, such restaurants taking strategic partnership with hotels. There are many 4 star hotels coming up and instead of hotels putting up a new brand, franchise brands like Manchester United Cafe Bar etc can be thought off.

DELECTABLY NAADAN Nostalgic recipes from Kerala
Savour the joy of traditional Kerala cuisine at the ongoing ‘naadan food fest' at The Senate Hotel
Imagine chena puzhukku or kaachil puzhukku…the joy of ‘naadan' or home-style food. Parochial as ‘naadan' sounds, it conjures up warm images of home, family and what if it is suffixed with food? Don't we all love anything that suggests home and even better, home-style food?
The Senate Hotel, on Providence Road, has come with a ‘naadan' daily buffet lunch menu that is bound to tickle many a homesick palate. “There are very few places in the city where you can get naadan fare for lunch. This is why we decided to offer this option,” says Yoosuf Koya K., general manager.
The menu changes daily, there are around 15 dishes which include two non-vegetarian dishes and two desserts. Yam (chena), tapioca (kappa), colocassia (chembu) etc are on the menu, in rotation. It is not too often that one finds yam or colocassia on the menu and therefore it is a good excuse to sample the fare. The other dishes on the buffet menu are – kaachil puzhukku, chembu mulakittathu, kappa thenga chathachathu, kakka mulagu fry, kozhuva ularthiyathu, kalan, olan, pachadi, thoran, njandu mulakittathu etc. Pappadams and pickle come over and above the listed dishes.
The chef readies an interesting spread for sampling. And the spread looks scrumptious, it is lunch time and we are famished. There is a variety of puttu to be had if you do not fancy rice. There is rice puttu, chemba (red rice) puttu and ragi puttu too. The choice includes appam, chappathis and parotta. As far as rice goes there is variety – ghee rice, carrot rice, beetroot rice and of course, boiled rice. The chef does justice to the puzhukku, which is quite filling.
Chef throws in beef idichathu as a bonus (there are ONLY two non-vegetarian dishes on the buffet menu) for us. Chicken kondattam is a chicken fry dish which looks like it is of Chinese origin (complete with chunks of onions)…only that is till you bite into a fiery piece of mulagu kondattam and the copious amounts of curry leaves. Every bite into a chunky chicken piece is a blast of spice and salt. And it goes well with the ‘thenga chor' (coconut rice) which, according to Yoosuf Koya, is a popular rice preparation in Malabar. It tastes like puttu, only that it is rice with grated coconut.
‘Thenga chor' offsets the sting of chicken kondattam. The other non-vegetarian dish on the menu of the day was ‘meen pollichathu' which was wrapped neatly in a banana leaf and slathered with a spicy masala with plenty of the shallots and green chillies. The fish was done well and each succulent bite was tear-inducing. “Some of the dishes are a bit spicy,” Yoosuf Koya agrees. Have it with puttu or rice, it is delicious. Simple.
With all the spice in our system, we look forward to the culmination, chena payasam. That does warrant a double take…there is chena but there is also jaggery, coconut milk…um…it is worth a try. There are the modern adaptations – carrot and papaya and then there are the traditional ones such as wheat, pazham etc.
The buffet is priced at Rs. 150.

A stirring cup of coffee, some sinful chocolate truffles and a windblown grassy field to gaze at.
That's Café Jew Town for you, amidst the hullabaloo of spice trade in the heart of history-soaked Mattancherry.
Jew Town, where the café is, is a colourful bazaar where heritage, history, spice and antiques jostle with each other for prominence. Each store is architecturally interesting, rich in history and is a veritable treasure trove of products that will engage and excite your senses.
It is the hub of sightseers who roam the streets, marvelling at the products, buying or just browsing. Walking down the spice-wafted lanes is Ethnic Passage, a corridor of chic stores and an art gallery on one side facing the café, which overlooks the windblown grassy field. You can enter the long corridor from the Synagogue, Clock Tower end or the Boat Jetty side near the Dutch Palace. Once inside Ethnic Passage, you are cut off from the hustle and bustle of the bazaar and yet you are very much a part of the atmospherics. The seating is along windows facing the high-walled in field, hidden from the drama of the streets. The openness draws you in, the cappuccino fills you with warmth, the antiquity of the land calms you and the chatter of a distant haggle keeps you in the present. The cafeteria is indeed a different world.
Annalis, owner of the café, carrying a bunch of deep red anthuriums, rushes in radiant and breathless. About her café, she tells me, “It's an inside street café.”
An inside street café? Ah yes, the reverie breaks and one turn the gaze inwards.
The leeward side is busy with shoppers, strolling in and out of the row of shops, all under the high roofed passage. Hidesign, the designer label that makes chic and trendy leather ware has a stylish outlet. Antiques, curios, beautifully crafted teak and rose drawers chaises, chairs, tables, chests etc, jars, Kerala curios and eclectic wares sourced from remote parts of India suck you into a world of beauty. The bookstore, ‘Chandy's Books' is a reader's delight. You find customers languidly browsing through pages, after ordering their food or drink.
The elite couture brand Ritu Kumar too has an outlet and the racks are lined with haute prêt in glowing soft colours. Gem Palace, another known brand has an outlet stocking precious and semi precious jewellery.
The café stretches along these stores stringing them together offering a neat little menu put together by Annalis and chef Sinoj. He has mastered the art of making truffles form her, for she believes in sharing her expertise. Annalis Damschen is from Switzerland and has spent many years in Kochi.
The menu has a range of scrumptious eats from the popular Dutch pancakes to strawberry cheesecake. “Ginger lime soda is a favourite with guests,” says Sinoj. There is a choice of more food and a warm staff to pamper you. It is a perfect retreat for those on a holiday who can take a break from some soul stirring sightseeing and colourful shopping.
For they will find a quiet calm at café Jew Town, in that gooey chocolate bite, the cup that cheers and in the exclusive outdoor peek into the windblown grassy field. The café timings are from 9.30 p.m. – 6 p.m.

A tapas fest is on at David Hall till Sunday
Tapas with paneer or one with Keralan flavours, with banana and coconut? Chef Aitzol Alzibar breaks into a wide smile at the question and says, “Why not, tapas afford variety and allow for experimentation. Though I have not tried any of that yet.”
The Spanish chef is holding a tapas festival at David Hall, Fort Kochi on till February 5.
For the uninitiated, tapas are appetizers served either hot or cold with drinks. In ‘foodscape' one can place them a little above finger foods or short eats and a little less than a proper starter. Having tapas is a food culture of the country and tapas bars are common in Spain while here in Kerala, Spain is the flavour of the season: in fashion, films and food.
Between bites of creamy cake and rushed sips of coffee, the chef, who missed out on lunch, explains all about the fest. He has laid out a large spread of these delicious looking short eats. Curious foodies gather around to grab the chef's words as he explains his culinary spread.
Tapas were served traditionally with drinks in Spain till they became a culinary culture. Now many bars charge for them. They have grown in fame and even in variety, says the chef.
The fest menu is colourful and sumptuous—Tortilla De Patata, a mini Spanish omelette, Txangurro, which are crab cakes, calamari cooked in its own ink, tuna fish with red pepper, a mini open sandwich of ham and tomato, Pulpo A la Gallega, which is octopus cooked Gallega style, vegetable croquettes and crumb fried mussels, to name a few.
Diners can savour the popular and well known Spanish cold soup—Gazpacho. The chef has made innovations using the sweet ruby red watermelon. A white Gazpacho with cucumbers is also there. “The soup is always served cold,” he says.
Aitzol studied to be a nutritionist and started working in the kitchen as a young man of 18. Since then it has been a food world for him. This is his first trip to India though he has been to Nepal before. He is amazed at the variety in Indian cuisine and especially at the variety of rice available. The tapas are never sweet and olives are common to Mediterranean cuisine, he says. Aitzol is amazed at the variety of rice produced in India. “You have different kinds of rice and one bottle of olive oil, we have different kinds of olives and one kind of rice,” says the chef apologising for his inability to communicate fluently. But words are not the need when he has laid out a table full of food speaking to us and communicating in the simplest, effortless way to our hearts.
The list of tapas in the menu will be on the food carousel, changing daily so diners can look forward to trying out the variety.
The chef, interestingly, has put up small combo meals like the much-loved seafood paella with oxtail stew and for desserts, he has rustled up pears poached in red wine and ‘churros', which is flour mixed with water and fried , served with chocolate.
A plate of 3 tapas is priced at Rs. 100 and a single tapa comes for 40. The festival timings are 11 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Come March and the street food trend is to take a new turn.
In order to maintain hygiene and cleanliness in the city, the Corporation is all set to distribute around 100 modern ‘thattukadas’ in the city.
About 50 ‘thattukadas’ equipped with solar heaters, purified water and good stoves for cooking, will be distributed in the first phase of the project.
Also, 50 street food vendors have been identified across the city.
The Corporation will take away the old ‘thattukadas’ and replace them with new ones.
The vendors will be trained and will be given financial assistance in the form of grant and bank loan.
A modern ‘thattukada’ costs around Rs 70,000.
“The new ‘thattukada’ will be two-metre long and onemetre wide with a stainless steel platform.
We are also giving awareness and training to ‘thattukada’ owners,” said T K Ashraf, Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman.
This unique initiative of the Corporation is part of a scheme to rehabilitate street food vendors with financial assistance from Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project.
The project, ‘Rehabilitation of Street Food Vendors and Safe Food City’ aims to revamp hundreds of ‘thattukadas’ of selected vendors.
The Corporation will give a grant of `50,000 to each vendor.
The grant amount should be transferred to an account in the syndicate bank which has also sanctioned a loan for the new project.
Three months ago, when viral fever broke out in the city, the District Panchayat ordered a ban on ‘thattukadas’ in Kochi.
However, owing to widespread protest, the district panchayat was forced to change the decision and withdraw the ban.
The Corporation and the health authorities decided to distribute modern ‘thattukadas.’ Initially, they gave one ‘thattukada’ to a vendor in Vyttila and found it to be successful.
They hope to complete the project by the end of March.

http://i42.tinypic.com/zmcbgh.jpg
There are few things more delightful than discovering an excellent eating place, especially after a long day at work. And if it is a pizzeria that serves hot, homemade pizza, all of life's weariness melts away into nothingness.
Pizza Pie is a true delight indeed, both in terms of food and décor. A little off the main road in Kacherippady, away from the routine travails of traffic, this quaint restaurant with a sprawling garden is the perfect place for a quiet evening and an exquisite meal. Owners Sona Thomas Johny and her husband Johny Samson share an unbreakable bond when it comes to the love for food. “We opened this restaurant for food lovers who appreciate good food,” says Sona. She makes the pizzas herself—thin crust, authentic Italian pizza. “Super thin crust,” corrects Sona.
For someone who has no formal background in cooking, Sona makes some brilliant pizza. The Chorizo Pie, a pizza topped with Spanish chorizos and mozzarella cheese, seasoned with smoked pimentón ‘paprika' and salt just awakens your tastebuds. Sona has done her Masters in Australia and then another on International Studies and Diplomacy in London. It while she was studying in Melbourne that she had a short stint at a pizzeria. “That is where I picked up the niceties of pizza-making,” she says.
Pizza fans
Though it just started off by making pizzas for the family, Sona found out that her pizzas had a great fan following. “So, why not start our own pizzeria, we thought,” says Johny. “Sona tried out some 90 pizzas before we started Pizza Pie,” he says.
The restaurant was set up less than three weeks. The garden was cleaned and the storehouse in the corner was transformed into a kitchen. Frenzied hours were spent sourcing things for the restaurant including posters, other knick knacks to deck it up and even the music. The USP of Pizza Pie, however, is that “we do not add preservatives or use anything other than extra-virgin olive oil and original imported cheese, sauces and other ingredients,” says Sona.
The pizzas here are all large—13 inches—start at Rs 400 and go up to Rs 800. A little too steep? “All the ingredients are imported,” reminds Sona. Every recipe on the menu is different, including the sauces. “Chorizo and turkey pizzas are not easily seen around here. And people are loving it,” says Sona

vjkrishn February 19th, 2012, 04:09 AM 'Tokyo Bay' to open at Hotel Presidency soon (http://http://expressbuzz.com/cities/kochi/Tokyo-Bay-to-open-at-Hotel-Presidency-soon/364531.html)
In the kitchen of Japanese chef Akinori Nishloka’s apartment, at Kochi, M.V. Charles is busy chopping vegetables with a steel knife. For the past three months, he has been undergoing training under the Japanese chef. And this is in preparation for the new restaurant, ‘Tokyo Bay’, which will be opening at the Hotel Presidency very soon. Asked what are the common features in all Japanese dishes, Charles says, “There is frequent use of salt, tamarind, and sugar.”
Akinori is busy preparing different type of menus. In one, he starts with chicken cutlets. This is followed by a small dish called the kobachi. He rushes to the refrigerator and takes out a glass bowl. In it, there are radish, pickle, chillies, coriander, capsicum, carrot and basil leaves, all placed in a liquid of vinegar and salt. “Kobachi is an appetiser,” he says.
Thereafter, there is the Miso soup, which is the most famous in Japan. “It is made of soyabean paste and can consist of dried sardines or tuna.”
Then there are Japanese pickles, Chinese cabbage, and chicken cutlet with shredded vegetables. “You can have rice or steamed bread,” he says. “Japanese rice is thick and sticky. People in Kashmir eat the same type of rice, so we are getting it from there.”
Other items include prawn rolls in omelette, tuna in toasted sea plants, squid or egg rice balls.
“You could also have a chawanmushi,” he says. “This looks like a pudding, but it is not sweet. Inside are chicken, vegetables, and mushrooms.” And finally, there is sushi.
“It is raw fish,” says Charles. “But when you mix it with the sauce, it is tasty.” So will the Malayali take to the Japanese cuisine? “Things like chicken cutlets will do very well,” says Charles. And will Akinori put in a bit of masala powder to satisfy the Mallu palate? He laughs and says, “No powder. Instead, I will give masala sauce separately.
The patrons can mix it with the food any way they
like.”
What Akinori is very proud about is that the Japanese can make several dishes from one vegetable. “From potatoes, we make 30 varieties,” he says. “From Chinese cabbage, we can make soup, salad, pickle and sushi rolls.”
But what is the most taxing work for him is when he goes to Broadway to buy vegetables. “Ladies fingers and beans are very hard,” he says. “Unlike in Japan, the good and the bad vegetables are put in the same basket. In Japan, they throw away the bad items. I have to observe carefully and take the best.”
Akinori, who has worked in Germany, Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, has been in Kochi for the past three years. Earlier, he was making food for the employees of the Japanese company, IHI Corporation, which was involved in the setting up of the LNG gas terminal at Vallarpardom. When that work got over, he decided to stay on, because he loved the people. “They are nice and peaceful,” he says. “They have bigger hearts than the Japanese.”
So, watch executive chef Akinori in action at the Tokyo Bay in the near future.

mohammedirshad06 February 23rd, 2012, 02:32 PM Well another Fast Food Chain from UAE, is fastly gearing up for Kochi.
http://www.logotypes101.com/files/444/b43127c9565d725a7cae3a0203acdfcd/lrg_Southern_Fried_Chicken.gif
Abu Dhabi based SFC group, which runs British Fast Food company- Southern Fried Chicken and Pizza Pan in GCC as Master Franchise, will be launching SFC Chain across Kerala within next 7 months.
The Company's fully owned Indian Subsidiary Muralya Group, based in Trivandrum with its commercial office at Kochi has published recruitment notice for various positions in F&B Industry and restaurant administration, to be based in Kochi.
The Company will be opening the first SFC store in Kochi, have plans for more units in Trivandrum, Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Thrissur. Its heard that company will be investing 700 crore for its Indian operations of SFC. Eariler Southern Fried Chicken was started in Hyderabad under Manha Foods, but the parent UK company decided to keep state franchises than Master franchise mode. As a result, Kerala market will be handled by own stores of SFC by Muralya Group.
In addition, they have plans to start a dairy farm in Kollam, two 4 star hotels based in Trivandrum and Kochi as well as an Ad Company based in Kochi.
The company also plans to extend its fine dining restaurant brand- the India Palace also to Kochi (probably in Lulu Mall as heard).
The SFC group started its Indian operations as Muralya Group in Trivandrum in 2010 end which is now into catering and tourism industry. The company, owned by Muralidharan, a popular NRK expat in UAE, is a pioneer in Franchise Fast Food restaurant business in UAE with SFC. Currently more than 30 stores of SFC operates across UAE and the company plans to increase its presence across GCC coming years.

Great update MI, lot to cheer for Kochi fanatics ;)
Actually they were to start operations last year.... But delayed, due to many issues..... In addition, there was a controversy as Manha Group started SFC first in India in AP and was planning to expand into other states, while SFC (read as Southern Franchising Company LLC) was served with a legal notice for infrignment of trade-mark of parent company.
Hence the company was renamed as Muralya Group in India..... And the issue of franchising has to be settled. Last year mid, SFC's parent company Arthur's Fast Food Systems, decided that in India, it can be under state franchise, instead of single Master franchise.
However Manha group ended its SFC operations in Hyderabad by last quarter of last year itself, citing poor sales.
I guess, SFC is now gearing up fast, to take over AP market too... Manha was not efficient in promotion of SFC and it was more considered as a local brand than international brand, that too in a major city like Hyderabad.....
------
Muralya now has a full fledged catering unit and a property division in its Trivandrum office. They are doing some catering activities for certain companies in Technopark. Thats what I heard... Not sure. Also they have a travel agency company too.....
They have a full fledged office in Church Landing Road near Fine Arts Hall in Kochi.... One of their newly appointed Marketing manager is a class-mate of mine. He is based in Kochi. I got much information from him.... Equally saw the recruitment ad in Manorama's Jobs page.... Couldn't post here.....
-----
SFC chicken is quite different from regular ones.... Its skinless and broasted chicken.... My sister and many of my friends like it very much.... But to be honest, I don't like that... I prefer either KFC or Popeyes or Texas etc when given a choice of fried American chicken......
The Adventurer February 26th, 2012, 02:44 PM Don't know if its been posted here before...
But there's this new (december) joint called kuttimulla that has opened near the passport office in panampilly nagar. They serve toddy cuisine just like shaap curry(without the toddy ofcourse). They serve dinner too.
I've been there a few times and even had them cater for a party.the food is really good and inexpensive. The owner was the manager at "mullapanthal"
he also said that he's in the process of taking over the lease to run "parampara" in panampilly nagar which is well furnished and air conditioned.... So once he begins to run it, I think we'll have a fine fine toddy cuisine restaurant in town too.

Ohh thats so strange? Toddy Fine Cuisine? An innovation indeed....
By the way Parampara is not really doing well... I have never seen any rush there, despite of prime location..... Whereas there are more crowds for Curry Pot which is more far inside......
Its good, to see some innovations being planned..... I had Shap food experience from the one behind Maharaja College.... Ohhh Man... Its really awesome, especially the duck roast.....
The Adventurer February 26th, 2012, 04:12 PM Curry Pot is doing really well.... Be prepared to wait for almost an hour on weekends if you don't have a reservation...Curry Pot killed 12 to 12 bar b que i'd say.
SUBWAY has put up a hoarding at manorama junction i hear. I hear its open starting today.Dont know the exact location, might be able to confirm by tomorrow.
They're probably on trial run like mainland China was.

I don't think so Curry Pot and 12-12 Barbeque could be in direct competition. The former is a fine dining multi-cuisine restaurant, unlike the latter, which is more causal one..... However Curry Pot is really fabalous.... Eariler I used to call up for delivery of their services. Now they stopped home delivery to beyond 3 Kms.... But I really liked the quality of food served there.....
I too have heard Subway is returning back in Panamapally Nagar. But not sure... Might be at Itty's place as heard that there was some renovation going on in its ground floor..... Since they are multi-franchise restaurant, I feel it would be likely to be there... Please check and update, if possible......

mohammedirshad06 February 29th, 2012, 09:49 AM I happened to look around YummyBay and was surprised to see more than 280 restaurants listed for Kochi. That was after removing all non-restaurant entries from the list.
Definitely, Kochi is the Food Capital along with the other designations like Commercial Capital, Tourism Capital etc.
Here is the list. Many of the places are not covered in the posts on this thread. Maybe we should!!
I must say, half of them are yet to be covered... Some are out of the list due to closure, while a large number in Fort Kochi not being covered....

Thanks Dileep Bhai for the list, you have spent some time to tabulate :)
But i can point out number of common restaurants missing from the list, so this doesn't even cover half as MI said. Most of them listed here is the divisions of the same Restaurant. Ceylon Bake House has atleast half a dozen joints in Kochi. Similarly for NBC, Malabar Plaza etc. Where is Paramount, Pizza Hut, Sagar, White Fort and others?
Then, calling Kochi Food Capital is OK, but more OK with Calicut i believe, even though they may have lesser numbers :)

Calicut is basically food connoisseur place. Much more focused on its own native massive and diverse food culture..... I don't think, anyone will go to Calicut to have Pizzas or Burgers or steaks, as the native food culture itself is so strong and too diverse, sometimes irresistible by its own mark.
Whereas Kochi has comparatively little to Malabar, when comes to native food culture. Right from history, our food culture is more highly foreign influenced and focused maximum in Seafood and bit of veg dishes. Thats all... Whereas when coming to cosmopolitan food culture, surely Kochi has an edge. You have every kind of food culture, except that of too Orient and Tribal in nature..... You have more diverse fine dining restaurants, causal and freak out points and street food joints etc, serving varied taste buds.....
I feel, there lies the difference between Calicut and Kochi's food culture styles.....

That is the exact reason why I did the collation. I didn't know half of these existed!!
Yes, A huge number of places is missing from the list. Those do not use the services of Yummybay, that's all.
Yummybay is for internet savvy, no, internet CRAZY people, so I wonder why the 'not an IT Hub' Kochi have so many outlets listed :crazy2::crazy2:
mohammedirshad06 March 1st, 2012, 06:37 AM Finally zeroed in where is Subway coming up....
Its coming up just opposite Manorama Junction, where Feng Shugi Chinese Restaurant used to operate, on side of ING Vysya Bank....
Ideally as it faces both main road and Panamapally Nagar.
But still I wonder why Subway didn't consider any Mall rather than stand alone store....... Our society will not find much value to have a a piece of chicken inbetween few veggies in between a bread and all oven roasted, for Rs 100+.... Though there is a considerable rise of diet conscious public, who find Subway, an healthy-tasty fast food, it still a very small minority to patronize a store......
In a Mall, you have people of different tastes coming together and can afford to sit together in food court opting their favourites, which will help more people to look for Subway as an option..... Likewise, another ideal option was inside Infopark/Technopolis due to the very nature of working style of techies.
The Adventurer March 1st, 2012, 08:14 AM Panampilly nagar is where a lot of foodies hang out.people in town at mg road, kaloor, kadavanthara, thevara etc find it difficult getting to a mall to grab a bite.
Panampilly nagar has its own charm.
I'm quite sure they'll have a outlet in lulu too.
e_arunsid March 1st, 2012, 08:27 AM ^^ I wish govt do something to beautify Panampilly Nagar main road..It such a lovely place to hang out ...A nice 4 lane road with footpath would make it more pleasant...
The Upcoming atlantis Flyover will also increase the patronage of most of these restaurants..

It has been only a month since Thanco Fresh Fruitsz Ice-Cream on Kaloor - Kathrikadavu Road started to cater to Kochiities. Thanco is a Bangalore-based chain of fresh fruit ice-creams and gets its supply from there on a daily basis. “This is the 68th Thanco parlour in the country and with 40-plus flavours to offer, is second largest too. We already have patrons who visit us on a regular basis. Here, we not only offer a variety of additional flavours like kiwi and blackcurrent but also have a range of non-fruit homemade ice-creams like Belgium dark chocolate, thandai, gulkand and even Horlicks flavour. Our exclusive is ‘Green Mirchi’ flavour, which is hot as a chilli but at the same time as cool as an ice-cream should be,” says Rahim, manager, Thanco Fresh Fruitsz Ice-Cream.
Adding to the temptation is the fact that most of the flavours cost just ` 35 per scoop and the upper-limit for exotic ice-creams with dry-fruits is ` 45. They also offer freshly baked waffle cones.
“We also offer special sugar free ice-creams, in which we maintain the natural sweetness of the fruit pulp and avoid added sugar. These ice-creams are less sweet than the variety with sugar, but the original flavour is kept intact,” says Thanzeer, main staff at Thanco.
The Adventurer March 3rd, 2012, 01:09 PM A second outlet of haji ali has opened at edapally toll junction on the nh.
Malayaali March 3rd, 2012, 01:33 PM ^^ by the same group? There is big patronage in their MG road outlet i believe.
The Adventurer March 3rd, 2012, 04:04 PM It has the same layout as the MG road one so i guess it is.
Im a regular at their MG road outlet.
arunks March 3rd, 2012, 06:31 PM Likewise, another ideal option was inside Infopark/Technopolis due to the very nature of working style of techies.
Would somebody open some good fast food joint here in Infopark.. I mean you should go fishing where this is fish. The culinary options inside the park is very limited to a bunch of canteens run inside the individual buildings. There is canteen run by IRCTC but they serve the same food as rest of them, arguably of better quality..
The techies wont definitely mind a change in the lunch options, like the Pizza hut, or even a KFC.. It is Infopark, else the place would have been already crowded with fast food joints..
Atleast a CCD ?

I was wrong, CCD website (http://www.cafecoffeeday.com/locate-an-outlet.php) says we have another outlet in Leela Infopark too :)
Infact we have CCD outlets in both International and Domestic terminals of CIAL.
The Adventurer March 7th, 2012, 09:57 AM I haven't been there yet, but I'm hearing good reviews about a fine dine italian restaurant named 'roma' at the holiday inn kochi.
the pizzas are good I hear.
planning to check out the latest pizzeria in town "pizza pie" at kacheripady. They claim to serve authentic hand tossed pizzas which I think isn't common in kerala.
And id also suggest the kfc @ mg road over gold souq for the quality, cleanliness and food.... The fiery grill is pretty good our even better than the fried chicken.

Portugese food festival will be held from 5-25 March 2012 at Ramada Resorts. The fest will be on from 7. 30 p.m to 11 p.m.
They have umpteen non-vegetarian dishes which are from the Pourtugal kitchens including Berbigao a bulhao para (cockles with garlic and lemon), Rissois de camarao (prawns savory pastries), Bifes de Cebolada (beef steak with onion) and more. There are delicacies in store for the veggies too! Pixinhos da horta (fried green peas), El Bullitt (vegetable hot-pot), and Pao De Milho (cornbread). You can wrap up this sumptuous meal with Fios de oves (threaded egg desert) and Pao de lo de arnendoas (almond honey cake).
The Adventurer March 14th, 2012, 04:09 AM It's official.
Mcd is recruiting staff.

Well, they don't have US kind of Beef based Big Mac/Quarter Pounder in India as Indian McD has a policy of No Beef-No Pork to protect Indian religious sentiments (ofcourse in Kerala, even majority of Hindus love Beef more than Chicken and Pork is highly popular dish). But they will not have different menus for different states.
So get ready for Big Chicken Maharaja (Indian Big Mac) and McSpicy Chicken (Indian version of Quarter Pound).....

Yeah Yeah!!!! It completes the best of global Fast food brands in Kochi. Now only remaining to debut will be Taco-Bell (can expect in Lulu), Wimpy and few Indian fast food brands like Pizza Corner, Smoking Joe Pizzas etc....
I guess, McD is debuting in Lulu. Don't know whether it has planned any stand alone store, as there was a hint in the newspaper report about drive-in restaurant.....

Yep even though malayalees prefer beef to chicken, there is very less chance that we will see any options in the menu other than the one offered in the other cities. McD's are operated by two main franchisees, Hard Castle and Golden Kitchen. I guess the offerings are fixed at national level.

Its likely to be going to be in Lulu itself and may be they will even plan one in MG Road as well depending upon the response and going the KFC way. In Bangalore a McD can be found very close by to a KFC. That makes me wonder whether KFC have any plans to open in Lulu ? Anyone knows about that ?

I happened to chat with one of the senior folks in McD few months back, he told me first McD in Kerala would be in Lulu.. and that they have signed the lease agreement already. They had evaluated MG road & Infopark option an year back, they felt MG road rent quoted was too high, so it was not making financial sense. Infopark he said they were not convinced. About more outlets he said it would be based on the feedback from Lulu outlet.

KFC is definitely there in Lulu. You can see its logo in the banner of brands which has already signed with Lulu. Just check Malls thread, you will see it.
Lulu, will have a very wide selection of the national and international fast food and fine dining restaurant brands. Pizza Hut, KFC, SFC, Subway, McD and many more....
I believe apart this, McD might plan for another stand alone drive in store. Probably could be near Panamapally Nagar as it offers such facility more than MG Road.... Equally, they are very likely to take space in Centresquare Mall for MG Road.

Its not less chance, its NO CHANCE, as menus of a fast food brand is fixed for a national/master franchise level, which donot change state/region wise....
For India, the menu is standardized and fixed at national level and you have only that options here too, just like KFC or Pizza Hut.....
After all the key advantage of Fast Food chain is that, they offer standardized menu, so that those who wish not to opt for local food, can have the option of a food which they know well.....
DileepKS March 14th, 2012, 10:31 AM The problem with Beef burgers is the unavailability of quality beef. We eat rubbery Beef that had walked miles across the border, which will not work as a burger. You need properly farmed and processed animals, which is impossible to get here. It is forbidden to import as well.
DileepKS March 14th, 2012, 10:37 AM While welcoming McD as a symbol of development of the city, I personally don't like McD products. Didn't like their offerings in USA, and don't like their chicken based products here. AMOF, I don't eat any of the "burgers" from the chains here, be it CK, KFC or the other chains like Penguin or Chicago.
Dominos didn't have pepperoni originally, citing a no-beef/no-pork policy, but after my return from USA, I find them (and pizza hut as well) carrying pepperoni. Other pizza places have 'chicken pepperoni', which is as good as soy breastmilk.
e_arunsid March 14th, 2012, 11:10 AM Even i m not a big McD fan..But its a super brand
The Adventurer March 14th, 2012, 11:32 AM . Other pizza places have 'chicken pepperoni', which is as good as soy breastmilk.
'Soy breast milk' has just been added to my dictionary!! :-D
I like mcd once on a while but I'm not a regular especially keeping in mind the damage it does to ones health..but it's generally agreed (as portrayed in their add) as the most affordable value for money dating destination!
DileepKS March 14th, 2012, 03:09 PM My kids always go for the "burgers" here though. The ones from Oberon (Crispy Chicken) used to be big enough for an adult, but they had been continually reducing the size, so that even my younger kid says it ain't enough for him! Penguin, which I used to get delivered, is still kind of OK, size-wise
The best burgers I had from a chain (ie, not those $30 restaurant angus beef ones) were from a small local chain called Bob's Giant Burgers. The best from a national chain was Carl's Jr, followed by Burger King. Rest of the brands are pink slime.
mohammedirshad06 March 14th, 2012, 04:47 PM Basically I don't like, the so-called burgers served in many parts of India and in Kerala especially. In all cases, the regular chicken patties are mostly minced meat/chicken, instead of regular all-white meat. So while back, I mostly order Zingers which is more better as have regular chicken strips instead of patties.
All these fast foods are good for once in a while outing. I don't think, anyone of us prefers for daily dining. But sometimes, we are forced to take it day dine too.
The presence of more brands adds value to the city and gives multiple option for those who want to dine. Its an indirect indicator for a city's growth prowess. Remember, eariler there was something called Big Mac Index, even to compare International GDP. I consider these as pretty visible symbols of our city's Big City status, if the word Metro hurts anyone......

I haven't been to the above said chains except BK and i prefer McD to BK, for the reason that beef and steak are my secondary options. But the best i've had is from 'Fat Burger'.

The buzz is exactly what you said. It is a thattukada of the developed world. They go to a place only when they are convinced that lots of people of that place will buy their Rs 150 Burger meals.
ANY fastfood store can work ANY place, if they sell, say Rs 25 meals. People will stand in queue (or mob, given our habits) to get them. McD becomes premium because they sell at Rs 150, with an ambiance that people will feel worth of value.

Its perfectly true.... In most of developed countries, KFC, McD are more like any basic restaurant, where you can have a quick bite and finish off the business. In UAE, you can buy a KFC Snack box for just AED 10. 10 Dirhams is nothing, but just have value of 10 Rs for a person in UAE, unless we take its official monetary conversion. A toasted Twister alone will come with just AED 3.
Whereas the same snack box will charged at 150 Rs plus taxes or a Twister alone at Rs 95 plus taxes. Ofcourse 150 Rs is has definitely a higher value in India.
All these fast foods are basically into price skimming. They start off at premium and slowly and slowly then make it move towards down. In 2007, a Medium Pizza Meal from Pizza Hut would costs around Rs 699 (along with a side dish and drinks). The same offer 3 months back was at Rs 449 and today its Rs 339..... Because these business survives on more customers. Initially then focus on premium, slowly to upper middle class and finally rests with middle class.....

Rs.150 for a chicken burger  till 3 years back we had a Mac chicken burger for just 100 yen (60 rs)..now its not available..here a std chicken burger costs around 350-450 yen at Mac now. Almost same price in India too:ohno: I cant believe! store space, salaries, utililies all cost atleast 20 times more than in India.
I also wonder abt the cost of soft drinks like coke or pepsi. A 2 litre bottle is just 150-170 yen here!
Meanwhile, two uzhunnu vadas costs more than 1000 yen and u have to pay 1200 yen for a masala dosa! almost 100 times!!!
DileepKS March 16th, 2012, 07:49 AM IMHO, the Rs 150 chicken burger is a തീവെട്ടിക്കൊള്ള. It should be more like Rs 50-75.
For that matter, anything middle class is same way here. Waaay overpriced. But people buy them anyway (and that includes me too)

Rocky Singh and Mayur Sharma write for Sunday Times about the unusual, unexpected and unknown eating experiences they have had in some of India's most amazing dhabas.
More than 80,000 km, 600 eateries, 2000 different dishes. That's what we've done in the last 5 years.
In Kerala, the language was difficult to work around. Then someone told us about the 'Mullapanthal Toddy Shop' in Kochi. All across Kerala are toddy shops. This one, on MLA road, Tripunithura, had to be among the best. And not just for the toddy (reason enough), but for the incredible food which is hugely spiced. The most popular item on the menu is the 'fish head curry' cooked with all the popular spices of Kerala in generous measure. The strong chilly is tempered with servings of fresh, hot puttu - a rice-andcoconut paste steamed in bamboo to perfection.

The Kochi corporation's project to give roadside eateries in the city a facelift, has finally taken off.
The civic body has completed the initial procedures and got the required approvals from the council and the government.
Though the project to provide modernized stainless steel handcarts to street hawkers was inaugurated in 2010, various issues in the council and delay in procuring approvals and funds had delayed the project.
"Initially many councillors opposed the proposal, and we were not able to get approvals and funds from agencies on time. There was also delay in preparing the list of beneficiaries," said T K Ashraf, Health Standing Committee chairman. Ashraf said Syndicate Bank had sanctioned a loan of Rs 1 crore for the project, which will be completed in one month. "The corporation's share of Rs 25 lakh has been handed over to the bank and we have given orders to build the modernized handcarts," he said. The project being implemented under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme (KSUDP) will rehabilitate about 50 street food vendors in the first phase.
Ashraf said training would be given to selected beneficiaries along with uniform and identity cards.
Each beneficiary will get a modernized handcart with necessary working facilities. The civic body will also assist the vendors in taking low-interest loans of about Rs 2 lakh required for setting up the wayside eatery. "Through the project, we want to ensure that safe and tasty food is provided at a reasonable cost. The Corporation has also announced a subsidy of Rs 50,000 for each vendor," said Ashraf.

Malayaali April 5th, 2012, 08:16 AM Bangalore's Casa Piccola to open franchisee in Kochi (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bangalore/Casas-gone-too/articleshow/12539488.cms)
Casa Piccola (http://www.casapiccola.com/casapiccola/eng/index.aspx), one of the city's iconic eateries on Residency Road, shut its doors after dishing out a lot of spice and all things nice, like saucy spaghettis, for 33 years. The restaurant chain, which operated five outlets across the city, opened its first in Devatha Plaza on August 20, 1979.
The chain's flagship store is the third outlet to shut shop. The past two years have seen Casa close down on Cunningham Road and Koramangala. Only two outlets remain -- one on CMH Road, operated by the owners, the other in Kammanahalli, which has been given out on a franchise. The restaurant chain opened a lifestyle lounge in Devatha Plaza, Casa Del Sol, which has also been closed.
For many old timers, especially those who went to elite schools around Residency Road, and office-goers in the area, Casa Piccola was an everyday chillout zone. A second home, as many like to call it.
Casa Piccola's piping hot cappuccino, with a dollop of whipped cream sprinkled with cinnamon, and its lemon ice tea, have also been big draws.
Oberoi says the brand has huge value and recognition, a reason why he's in the process of working out an expansion plan. "The brand is already present in Chennai through a franchise. We've got proposals from people who would like to take the franchise to Hyderabad and Kochi. For the Bangalore market, too, we have plans of expanding," says Oberoi confidently.
Casa is not the first iconic Bangalore eatery or store to shut shop in recent years, nor will it be the last. While Gangaram's Gallery on the first floor of the iconic bookstore is downing shutters at its 40-year-old location, Java City, at one time the CBD crowd's favourite cafe, wound up its Church Street outlet. Some sources claim that Cauvery, an MG Road-Brigade Road landmark, will also be changing address soon and moving out of the CBD.

Eating out now to become a costly affair

hike in taxes|Gas cylinders|eating out
KOCHI: In a couple of weeks, eating out would burn a hole in your pocket.
Considering the hike in taxes and price of commercial gas cylinders, hotel owners might increase the price of food items by 10% to 20% this month.
Many hotel owners in the city say this increase will add to their daily expense and they would be compelled to charge more.
Petroleum companies have announced an increase of Rs 236 on a gas cylinder and hotels and eateries have no option but to change the price list.
Owner of Fry's Village Alin Hassaier said the hike in the price of gas cylinders means an additional daily expense of Rs 1,500 which they will have to pass on to customers. "Prices of other commodities have also increased. So we will have to increase the price of food items by 10% to 20%," he said. Meanwhile, Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA) is supporting hotel owners and has decided to close down hotels and restaurants in the district on April 9. The association said that the hike in cooking gas price cannot be accepted and if the hike is not withdrawn, the strike will be intensified.
KHRA secretary Jose Mohan said that during the past one year, the price of gas cylinders for commercial use has gone up by 120% from Rs 800 per cylinder to Rs 1796.
"With this steep increase, it is impossible to run a hotel or restaurant. We will not ask anyone to hike the rates of food items, it is left to the owners," he said. Mohan also said that the state executive meeting that is scheduled to be held on April 19 would take further decision on intensifying the protest. "We are planning to create awareness among the public on various issues faced by us and will try to get their support," he said.

Ever fancied enjoying Sushi in an ambience that is realistically Japanese? Well, Kochi can now relish such delicacies as the first Japanese restaurant in Kerala will open its doors on Sunday.
Talking to TOI, a spokesperson of Tokyo Bay (http://www.tokyobayrestaurant.com/), the Japanese restaurant opening at Hotel Presidency (http://www.presidencyhotel.com/index.html) in the city said that the idea is to offer Kochiites cuisines like sushi, tenpura, teppanyaki, kobachi and yakitori, which at the moment is not available here.
"Led by directors of the Baby Marine Group (http://www.babymarinegroup.in/Home) and their Japanese business partners, Tokyo Bay will provide healthy food. While Kochi will be the first place in Kerala to host Tokyo Bay, we will soon have presence in other major cities across India as well," the spokesperson said.
Prepared by Japanese chef Nishioka San, customers will be able to enjoy the food at nominal rates.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy tries his hand at a Japanese delicacy
Kerala's opening up to making world cuisine a part of its own culture
Karimeen fry and puttu will always be a part of authentic Kerala cuisine, but don't be surprised to find a slice of every part of the world here soon. The food business in Kerala is growing like never before and the biggest surprise is that people are willing to give anything that is different, their best shot.
In fact, it was none other than the chief minister of Kerala who made it part of his business to inaugurate a Japanese restaurant. "That people are well travelled these days seems to have brought about this much-welcome change," says entrepreneur and dancer Roopa George. "People are no longer averse to trying out something new. The curiosity around Japanese food being available in our city proves that people are completely up to experimenting with the food. The fact that it also happens to be a much healthier option comes as an advantage," points out Roopa. Yet another cuisine that seems to be a favourite among people in Kerala is Italian. Though, the settling in has taken its time. "When the first Italian restaurant in Kochi opened, it took a while for people to get used to it. Initially, people would walk in and leave soon as they did not know what to order. But two years down the line, it brags of a regular clientele that lands up for their specific, favourite dishes," says David Ittycheria.
"A lot of the Arabian fare served here is very similar to the kind of preparations in north Kerala. That's probably why it remains so popular. And then there is the Indian Chinese which will never go out of fashion," says foodie Ranjini Ramesh.
"We do like our staple food, but it is great to try out new stuff too," says actor Prithviraj. "As a family, we enjoy discovering new places to eat out at. One among our favourite haunts is this little nook of a place at Fort Kochi, which serves Tibetan food. They really have the best momos we have ever had," he says.
However, entrepreneur Diwia Thomas has another opinion. "Many hotels here try to introduce different cuisines as part of their menu or through food fests. This helps check if people are ready to embrace different cuisines. World cuisine does not find many takers here, but if you hold a traditional Kerala food festival, people have their fill and order for takeaways too!"Are we ready to change that soon guys?
Malayaali April 17th, 2012, 05:27 AM Thai 'Green Biriyani' now available in Kochi (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kochi/City-can-now-savour-green-biryani/articleshow/12698445.cms)
For those health conscious foodies who crave for tasty biryani, but avoid it most of the time owing to its fat content, here is good news for you. Kochi now has 'green biryani'.
Prepared in the model of 'dum biryani', but instead of the metal or clay pot, the hollow stem of bamboo is used. Chef Abdul Rahman Khan claims that oil content will be very low when the biryani is prepared in this manner.
"Kerala is yet to know about this kind of biryani preparation. It is similar to the model of 'puttu' preparation. After the initial cooking gets over, rice and meat are put inside the bamboo stem, sealed and then steamed. There is a hole pierced under the stem through which all the excess oil in the rice will flow outside, reducing the fat content of the biryani. The biryani is prepared in such a manner that it will also have a unique taste," says Khan who introduced the green biryani during the 'Biryani Fest' hosted at Hotel Presidency in the city.
"Bamboo cooking is primarily part of Thailand culture, but India, with its multicultural population is already aware of its usage. But Kerala is not familiar with biryani cooked in this manner or that any kind of biryani can be cooked this way. With nearly 30 years of experience, Abdul Rahman Khan claims that his green biryani is getting a good response from city residents after he introduced it here last week.

Already 11 counters has been opened and more in the offing. 2nd Haji Ali of Kochi there. Really amazing stuff.

Is this one really IMAX or just brand name of another multiplex? Perhaps, it might be for the first in History, a govt tower getting up all these facilities, that matches to some sort of an International Mall.......

Well, to be honest, I don't feel so...... Last time, when I saw its works, they have really invested into the project developing extensive area branching outwards from the tower.... If they are into small scale eateries, they can look for rent up spaces, than investing in developing a large area....
I don't think McDonalds or KFC or Pizza Hut are the only defining factors of a world class food court.... Local brands, if properly developed and extensively done, its surely good...... I am not sure, how they have done.... If they have done to level of Food Circle, surely its really a good brand and more options to wind out.......

22,000 SF is really big for a food court. Definitely biggest in the state. Not sure other wise.
Kochi Resident April 24th, 2012, 12:02 PM It is given in today's Times of India that it is the biggest in South India. The multiplex will have two screens one of which is 'Rent a screen type' where private parties can take them on lease and exhibit movies which they like(This information I got from Manorama). The other one will be a regular one. IMAX is the type of screen and not a brand name for multiplex. We need to find out which multiplex is coming there(like whether it is PVR, Sathyam, Big cinemas or INOX or any local brand)

Malayaali April 26th, 2012, 06:17 PM ‘Good Afternoon’ lunch sevice!
http://kochigallan.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/GoodAfternoonLunchKochiCochin1.jpg
Good Afternoon Lunch is a start up based in Kochi which models itself loosely around the concept of the Mumbai’s ‘ Dabbawallas’. Good Afternoon Lunch delivers well packed, wholesome meals to homes and offices in Kochi.
Their operations started in April, 2011 and since then have been growing at a tremendous rate. Gokul, who’s a graduate of AIMS and then went on to get his masters from SUNY, New York started this venture soon after his studies. From a modest start of just less than ten orders a day, today they deliver their service anywhere between 500 to 1000 lunches a day!!!
“We like to believe that one of the best features about our service is that we ensure that all food which are delivered are well packed and hot by the time it reaches our customers.”, says Gokul. With tighter schedules and loose ideals about one’s health such a service makes a lot of difference to the working class in Kochin. One of the biggest customer base for Good Afternoon Lunch services is from the Infopark and the CSEZ areas in Kakkanad. Other prime areas where they serve are at the plethora of homes and offices in the Kaloor, Kadavanthara and Panampilly Nagar areas.
Considering that many establishments offer door delivery services in Kochin, Good Afternoon Lunch’s services stands out because they do not require a minimum order for delivery nor do they give a delivery area limit. Many companies and offices have opted to go the Good Afternoon Lunch way and have subscribed to their corporate services plans where for regular and bulk orders, they provide lunches in time for their lunch breaks. They also take orders for custom ‘sadhya’ orders.
“If you are in Kochi, you will get your food on time.” says Gokul. “We do not charge our customers extra for packaging or deliveries. Our prices are inclusive of all charges.” Currently their vegetarian meals are priced at Rs. 60/- per meal. This includes the delivery charges are well as the packaging charges and taxes.
“Rest assured, what matters to us and our customers are Quality. If quality is paramount, everything else will fall into place. We are starting a new menu which will include non-veg items. It is important that we maintain a separate kitchen for both vegetarian food preparations.” says Ashfak, an employee of Good Afternoon Lunch who is in charge of logistics and customer relations. With work on the North over bridge happening on full swing and with the summer sun blazing away, people in Kochin would welcome such services where food would be delivered right to their door step with open arms for sure!

I have heard about 'Fawaz Broasted' from my Saudi mates. I think the chain is limited to KSA and they are present there in good numbers, and might be owned by a Mallu. A similar Malayaali owned chain 'Bonfood' is present here in UAE.

Its Saudi based chain of hotel.... They have one in Kuwait.... Many of them are typical Gulf kind of cafetaria, offering fried chickens etc.... I had once eariler.... Basically I don't like much of broasted chicken... It gives a different taste.... So might be because of that, I didn't like much......
In Saudi, its more of localized brand..... One will not feel any world class feel.... Its like saying Chicago Restaurant or Royal chickeezzzzzz in Kochi.... Localized feel, rather than an international brand feel....
Bonfood is somewhat different... Its not limited to fried chicken kind of environment..... Its a multi-cuisine restaurant chain.... Their Masala dosas in Madinayat Zayed Old food court is really good.... It has a premium buffet restaurants and extensive Petrol station based food court models... It also has a good cafe, perhaps one of the few value ones, rather than premium brands.....
I don't feel its worth to compare Bonfood with Fawaz..... Both are totally apart, atleast in its feel and appearance.....
Good to see Kochi getting more and more options daily.....

I was mentioning the same. It has negligible presence compared to the size of the country. I don't accept that the reason for its closing down is attributed to its taste. I am more of an Indian dish habituate and i really like its taste.

Chef Akinori Nishyoka at Tokyo Bay
Japanese chef Akinori Nishyoka has a tall order on his hands. As master chef of Tokyo Bay, the first Japanese restaurant in Kerala opened recently at Hotel Presidency in Kochi, he has the huge task of familiarising a cuisine that is new to city folks.
“Lots of raw fish” is the common notion about Japanese food, but an experience at the restaurant alters the view.
Different
The food culture of the island nation is “too much different,” from Indian, says the chef. And it is not just about “no spice, raw fish, soya bean and radish.”
Indian food is mixed in the plate and savoured, but Japanese food in mixed in the mouth. “Hot” in Japanese sensibility is “very, very hot”. The meats are 100 per cent boneless. Japanese taste is very simple; sometimes it is only soya sauce. It is 50 to 60 per cent vegetables. It is close to nature food and hence healthy, sums up the chef, who takes extra effort to explain the subtle nuances of the cuisine. Heavy frying, slow sautéing and grinding pungent spices are cooking methods alien to Japanese food, he says.
Tokyo Bay is elegantly done, very much in the Japanese style of simple straight lines. The walls have prints depicting the life of the land from a samurai warrior to a geisha girl and the famous wave paintings. The seating is smartly appointed with exclusive areas marked by half curtains called ‘noren'. For an authentic experience of savouring the cuisine in the Japanese style, which is while sitting on the floor, there is a ‘tatami' room, with chic sunken seating. You remove your footwear and step into the room cordoned off by a screen door. The room can host six to 12 people and is right for having a small get-together.
At noon, before the diners arrive the place is quiet and in preparation. We choose to sit in the tatami room to get a feel of the culture. The chef and the restaurant in-charge, Joey Bhogal speak warmly and earnestly explaining every little novelty. The chef declares that he is worried about our response to the cuisine. He has cleverly chosen to rustle up a middle course for us- “some Indian, some Japanese”. The chicken mince balls are a perfect easy starter with not much of a mystery to it. This is followed by the crispy and ever popular tempura, which will be loved by everybody. It is crispy fried seafood, vegetables, which one has to dunk in soya sauce in which grated radish and a wee bit of ginger paste has been mixed. One eats by dipping the fried piece into the sauce. Horse radish, soyabean and tofu are staple vegan ingredients.
Fried chicken bits in soya is another wonderful starter which we enjoy eating. The squids gently sautéed with green peppers and rolled in light soya sauce is more Japanese than Indian and tasty.
Sushi for you
From the middle course one moves on to the more authentic and the known and relished sushi. For initiation, there are sushi prototypes in plastic, and one learns about seaweed wrap, sticky rice, wasabi (soyabean paste) and different fillings. One learns about the Americanised version and the fast food versions of this Japanese staple preparation.
The Miso soup is light and tangy made from soyabean paste. Shallots and fish sauce give it its unique flavour. Served in lacquer bowls, it is a perfect starter. The sushi bar, which is central to the restaurant, also has the yakitori machine, which is for barbequed meats, the tepannyaki counter for the steaks, foods that are popular and easy for Indian palates. Go for these and also try out the sticky rice served with chicken and egg. Seafood is the speciality and the versions available will take you from the popular variants to the authentic Japanese styles. Try them and have a complete Japanese experience. Japanese food spells taste and presentation and hence comes at a price.
The other handy facility at the restaurant is an attractively done children's room to keep them busy while you savour a slow, gentle eating out.
Engage yourself in learning to eat with chopsticks, which is quite a learning, but a happy one at that. And once mastered, you can gobble up the new tastes and flavours quickly and completely and stand converted as we did.
From the seventh floor at Tokyo Bay, we take in the view of a changing city that has space for a restaurant with a distinctive cuisine like this. It speaks a lot about the foodies out here.
Malayaali May 19th, 2012, 11:44 AM From the Malabar kitchens (http://ibnlive.in.com/news/from-the-malabar-kitchens/259423-60-122.html)
If summers are synonymous with blazing sun and never ending sweating, for foodies they are also a season to rejoice, munching the best delicacies to be found around at food fests. While sandwich, burgers and biriyani fests are the talk of the town, here is a food festival which stands out in terms of taste and uniqueness. The ongoing Mappila Food Fest at Spice Route, Oberon Mall (http://www.oberon.in/spiceroutes.html) serves you authentic Malabar delicacies. Ask the sous chef Sudheesh Gopi why they went in for Malabar style food this year, and he says, “It is vacation time and a lot of people from the northern part of Kerala visit the mall, so appealing to their appetites was a natural choice for us.”
Unlike any other fest, in the Mappila fest foodies are welcomed with the traditional refreshing drink ‘nannari sarbath’ which is famous for its cooling effects. As Malabar is a coastal area and famous for sea foods, for starters either one has the choice of crab or prawn soup to sip in. The signature dish of the chef comes in the form of ‘kozhi nirachathu’ and kozhi nirthi porichathu which are the favourites among Muslims in Malabar. As the name suggests, Kozhi nirachathu is stuffed with boneless chicken which is steeped in with spicy marinade while in kozhi nirthi porichathu, whole chicken is deep fried in Malabar masala. Both are priced above ` 320. These dishes have to be ordered separately and are not included in the buffet.
One’s taste buds are tickled merely by seeing the vast menu spread out. Pathiris are an important part of the Malabar diet. There are stuffed pathiris made from mutton, fish and prawn to munch on. Another dish is ‘mutton liver kurumulakittathu’ and ‘sea food masala’ which is a mix of prawn, crab and other sea fish. Ask him the secret of achieving a ‘homely’ taste, and chef Sudheesh says, “We want our dishes to taste like homemade food. And for that, all the masalas and spices are grounded in our kitchen only. From rice powder needed to make pathiri to chilli required for the curries are ground in our kitchen.” Kozhi anam made from pure coconut milk with onion, tomato and coconut goes well with appam.
How can a Malabar food fest end without having its traditional snack and dessert items. And at Spice Route one can find a spread of traditional desserts like ‘kaay ada’, ‘unnakaya’, ‘taripola’ and ‘chatti pathiri’ to gorge on.
And to end all this heavy and fulfilling dinner, there is a surprise drink that awaits you. The traditional ‘sulaimani’ that is consumed by people from Malabar having a heartfelt meal makes one feel extremely content and happy. The fest which is on till May 20 is priced at ` 375 during lunch and ` 425 for dinner. The restaurant time is from 12 pm - 3.30 pm and 7 pm - 10.30 pm.
Malayaali May 24th, 2012, 10:55 AM High on food (http://ibnlive.in.com/news/high-on-food/260904-60-122.html)
The car hesitates near the Government Ayurveda College at Tripunithura before it stops for directions. “Mullapanthal! Which way?” and a man points to the right. While the car purrs its way down the road, it is difficult to forget the man’s impish smile and the ‘I-know-what-you-are-doing-this-summer’ look.
As the car squeezes itself into a space at the destination, to say Mullapanthal is a ‘colorful’ haunt would be befitting. Bright shades of pink, yellow and green jump off walls and the loud colour code is the shack’s signature. Amidst the vibrant riot, a black and white sign stands tall - kallu. As one steps over the threshold into the notoriously famous Mullapanthal shaapu, the faint smell of jasmine plays the perfect host.
Inside, bottles of toddy sit pretty on tables painted in all colours imaginable. Left hands caress glassfuls of the tappers’ bounty. On the right, platefuls of the choicest meat let tastebuds run amok. And as friendly waiters reel off the a la carte food menu, one can simply revel in being spoilt for choice.
Karimmen Pollichathu (fish clothed in spices and cooked in plantain leaf) is indeed a ‘prize catch’ at ` 150 and the signature shaapu preparation leaves nothing to imagination. Karimeen fry, priced between ` 80 and 200 and cooked to perfection is a seafood lover’s manna. The combination of karimeen curry and kappa (baked tapioca) scores a perfect five on five. And when the waiter lands platter fulls of prawns ularthiyathu (` 100 ONLY!), one is bound to be a Mullapanthal fan for life!
When the meat arrives, it does so in style. While beef and pork live up to their reputation of being perfect ‘touchings’, tender rabbit meat, wrapped in pepper and spices, is bliss every mouthful. At Rs 100 per plate, the rabbit delicacy is a must-eat as it is not often available in restaurants. Duck, crab and quail roast make for a spicy affair too. Only appam, puttu and chapathi are served and rice is strictly off the menu.
Unabashed by the display of gluttony, we mowed through platefuls of meat and struck conversation with Paul and Alice from Texas, USA at the adjacent table. In between mouthfuls of toddy, Paul narrates, “I am sipping toddy after 30 years and it never tasted this good. The rabbit meat had me at the first bite and I couldn’t wait for the word go before I tucked into the fish.” Alice adds, “I had only heard about the place from family and seen pictures. I knew I had to come here the next time we visited India and guess what, we’ll be coming back for more,” and she reaches for the next helping of kappa.
Mullapanthal shaapu is a toddy shop with a difference, and an attitude. For starters, it has a name unlike other toddy shops. It is the only toddy shop with its own website and has over a thousand reviews to its ‘name’. Further, it couldn’t care less about the ramshackle shack and the paint-peeled chairs that put off guests initially because it lets its food and toddy do the talking. And when the bill does not require guests to loosen their purse strings much, one can only soak in the good ‘spirits’. Also, women can leave their inhibitions behind when they step into Mullapanthal as private cubicles make dining here a family experience.
A sneak peak of the kitchen (a privilege extended to special guests) reveals five wonder-women and their recipes for a lip-smacking affair. While hot oil gurgles over meat in a uruli, placed over a traditional firewood stove, natural spices are sprinkled generously, and one sees the making of a kingly dish. “Food engane undaayirunnu?”, the question brings one down to earth and the reply says it all, “Adipoli!” After the brief stop, the journey hits the foodie’s highway to paradise again!

Malayaali May 30th, 2012, 03:08 AM Tickling the taste buds (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/tabloid/kochi/tickling-taste-buds-865)
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/article_horizontal/article-images/KABAB-JI_CUT-OUT.jpg.crop_display.jpg
Behind the success of filmmaker Baiju Kottarakkara, there is a delectable story of the tastes of the world.
The man, who travelled around the world to make magic on celluloid, never failed to treat his palate with the exotic savories of every destination.
Locking the luscious flavours and transmitting those lip-smacking dishes to his homeland, Baiju last week opened a food mall in Kochi, the biggest of its kind in the State, which houses 12 acclaimed international and national brands with an irresistible menu offer on platter, right from Shappu curry to American Choupsey.
Inspired in design by a restaurant at the Universal Studios in Hollywood, the 22,000 sq ft space of the food mall in two floors at the Revenue Towers is a beautiful blend of nature and sophistication.
“It was during the time I was working with the Channel 4 and also while directing a Hollywood movie that I frequented this restaurant at Universal Studios. I wanted to try this out here,” says Baiju.
Some of the exquisite brands include, Chutneys — the Andhra-based restaurant which boasts of 60 varieties of dosas, the Cheezaria-pizza corner, the Sardar Pav Bhaji — with a whole range of different kinds of bhajis, the Kabab ji — the real taste of Arabia, Kerala’s first Bombay Haji Ali outlet, New York Fried Chicken and many more.
Baiju’s eyes glow bright and our mouth starts watering when he starts speaking about his personal favourite among them all, the Thani naadan restaurant.
He says, “Once you taste those ethnic delicacies like the duck roast and meen pollichathu, you simply can’t keep away from tasting it again and again.
Come August, a tribal food fest will be organised wherein tribals from remote parts of Kerala will be invited to prepare for us some of their mysterious curries which will surely make you spellbound.”
The filmmaker has not forgotten to include his fervour for films even within the food mall. With State’s first 7D theatre to be launched by the end of June, the mall will soon open a single screen 50 seater luxurious multiplex too.
He adds, “For perfect enjoyment, you can’t miss nourishing your skin too along with your taste buds.
Hence, I have brought a Thailand company which introduces sensation spa, realia zatio therapys, nail extension, etc. for the first time in the State.”
All said and done, if you think Baiju Kottarakkara’s food mall experience is going to burn a hole on your wallet, you are mistaken — every stall has reasonably priced boards beckoning you.
“Satisfaction is what I am looking out for, and not profit,” he says with an appetising smile spreading along.

Malayaali June 18th, 2012, 11:59 AM GCDA plans 3 eateries at Marine Drive (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kochi/GCDA-plans-3-eateries-at-Marine-Drive/articleshow/14222780.cms)
It is good news for tourists and lovers of Marine Drive. Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) plans to open three eat-out joints along with the proposed Kettuvallam (houseboat)- shaped bridge by August.
GCDA has plans to extend the existing walkway from the High Court Jetty to Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) complex. It will cover almost 1km and the bridge will be built above the canals on this stretch.
The eateries - two tower restaurants and an open-air restaurant - are expected to woo more people to the Marine Drive. The open-air restaurant would be built on 40 cents of land by the side of the bridge while the tower restaurants will be built on a 16ft structure above the bridge level. Each tower restaurant will have a seating capacity of 40 people.
The cuisines provided at these restaurants have not been decided yet.
"Our main aim is to utilize the potential of the place to the maximum. It has a great tourism potential as it offers a great view of the Vembanad Lake merging into the Arabian Sea. Tender notice has already been issued to select the catering services at these eateries. By including eating areas and by extending the walkway we want to give more space for recreational activities for tourists and locals," said GCDA chairman N Venugopal.
He also said that unauthorized shops or street vendors will not be entertained on the proposed walkway.
A total of Rs 7 crore has been estimated for the project which includes clearing the land, laying ornamental tiles on walkway, building restaurants, etc.
A new entry point will also be created near the new corporation office site. "This will act as another access point to the Marine Drive. We actually want to extend the walkway to the Goshree Bridge. But GIDA had already sold their land on the northern tip. However, we will look into the possibilities of further expansion. The construction of the bridge, the open-air eatery and the tower restaurants will be constructed and managed by the GCDA," the chairman said.

“Offer Tale is Google for restaurants and hotels in Coimbatore,” says Vimal Kumar, co-founder of www.offertale.com. Started by two engineering graduates, this food delivery service allows you to order food from your favourite restaurants in the city online (or over phone) and have it delivered at your doorstep. “Even during our under graduation years, Vimal and I wanted to do something online. We have always been interested in software development,” says Prashaanth Venugopal, co-founder. “We were thinking of various e-commerce ideas. We realised then that in our city, there was no facility for people to order food online.”
Vimal was working with an MNC and Prashaanth had an offer to pursue his Masters in Netherlands. But, the classmates from school and college decided to set up Offer Tale, much to the disapproval of their parents. It was launched in February this year.
The company offers food delivery and hotel booking services, and has partnered with about 25 hotels so far, including Cream Centre, Seasons, China V’lley, Little Italy, Dosa Plaza, Alapenos and Myx. The menu cards of these restaurants are available on the website. All you need to do is choose your dishes, and wait for an hour for delivery. “We offer free delivery if the user stays within four km of the restaurant. Otherwise, we charge anywhere between Rs. 35 and Rs. 65 as delivery rates,” explains Vimal. Prashaanth adds that they also help people from other cities book hotels in Coimbatore. They book rooms on customers’ behalf, after receiving details (such as the budget and the type of rooms required) from them.
Inspired by Snapdeals, they also put up offers and deals on the website every month.
Vimal and Prashaanth have been receiving a “decent amount of orders” over phone and some, online. “We will start delivering confectionary items very soon,” mentions Vimal. “Customised cakes and pastries can be ordered on our website. We also plan to get into the banquet and event management space. And yes, a corporate lunch box programme too, where customers can pay on a monthly basis and have their lunch boxes delivered at office.”
Their expansion plans includes extending their services to places such as Chennai, Puducherry and Kochi.
The team of eight works from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on all days. For details, visit www.offertale.com or call: 94898-58986.

It’s back: Kashi Art Café, on Burgher Street, Fort Kochi, which has art, coffee, sandwiches and a relaxing ambience, will be reopened on Friday. The same place, the same menu, but the interiors have changed. Karl Damschen, restoration architect and Marc Delrome, designer, have helped Edgar Pinto, the new owner, to keep intact the heritage status of the quaint place.
What Anoop Scaria and Dorrie Younger, the former owners created from an old Dutch house, 12 years ago, grew into a hub where artists showed their works and had heated discussions over coffee.
HOMELY
Tourists loved the homely atmosphere, where no one came, waste tray in hand, giving you the signal to leave. You saw tourists reading a book, simply enjoying the view or having a conversation over a long, leisurely breakfast.
“We plan to keep everything the same, even the staff has been retained,” says Edgar, who has put up some of the works from his art collection on the walls and in the small courtyard within the café.
A seductive sculpture by K. S. Radhakrishnan adorns this niche space, while on the walls, works of Pradip Naik, Bose Krishnamachari, Murali Cheroth, Christine Mamakos, Sri Lankan artist Sampath Amunugama and Vivek Vilasini. A work by Marc Delrome is very Keralite.
He has nine dry whole coconuts painted in different colours and mounted them on separate frames with green in the background. He has hung them up, five in a row, vertically and put two of them horizontally to make a plus sign. Very innovative and rustic.
One side of the wall is no wall at all. It is alive and growing, with potted plants (orchids, ferns, greens etc) arranged from top to bottom, side to side.
Railway sleepers and pebbles decorate the floor in one area while you have iron tables and chairs, as also wooden chairs, some cast iron and even granite tables.
The café opens today but the Kashi Art Gallery there will have its first show on August 4, with Riyas Komu’s first solo exhibition in Kerala. “There will be seven works, paintings and sculptures, for three months. After that we will have K.S.Radhakrishnan’s works for a month.
"Emerging artists in India like Subodh Gupta and others will also be shown. Popular artists from Mumbai and Delhi will be exhibited here,” says Edgar.
As for the café, it will function as of old. No soft drinks, but only fresh juices of the season, plus of course coffee (freshly ground), tea, spiced tea or cold coffee. Short eats and continental fare will be available as also cakes, chocolates, pies….
Art and food…happy bedfellows indeed!

From savories which are non-vegetarian to lovely veggie dishes, restaurants in the city have always made sure that they treat your taste buds with the best. So here is a restaurant that has been into business since the last six years, and has been in the news for all the good reasons. We are talking about ‘Kettuvallam’, the restaurant located at Kaloor-Kadavanthra road.
The news is that, ‘Kettuvallam’ has opened their new and bigger outlet at Kaloor, near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. From karimeen pollichathu, tharav mappas, prawns roast, aavoli mulakittathu and more, sea-food is available at its best here. Their restaurant in Kaloor-Kadavanthra road has fetched a large audience, and the fan following is huge.
If you are in the mood for some Kerala dishes this time, drop in here. The rates are reasonable. Hop-in for lunch or dinner at their restaurants; 12p.m-4p.m for lunch, and 6.30 p.m-11 p.m for dinner.

Malayaali July 10th, 2012, 12:49 PM Lumiere organic restaurant in Kochi
Health food is gaining popularity with Indian consumers. All over India, especially the metros and the emerging cities, the concept of health food is gaining momentum. While earlier Indians were content with getting an occasional broccoli and exotic fruits like avocados from the big retail stores, now they are looking for more. With affluence, health-conscious (and brand conscious) customers are looking for better options. Fat-free, sugar-free, cholesterol-free and chemical-free~ Indian consumers today are more concerned with what they eat and how.
The trend is catching on with the restaurants too. Lumiere (http://lumiere.co.in/index.php), a Kochi-based organic food cultivator, have now opened restaurants in Cochin and Bangalore.
The Adventurer July 10th, 2012, 12:57 PM Shut down long ago.
Food used to be fine but overpriced.that place is jinxed....restaurants open and close all the time
Malayaali July 10th, 2012, 01:43 PM ^^
Strange, i made this from today's news article!
The Adventurer July 10th, 2012, 04:11 PM Dunno if the lumiere replacement that opened few months back shut down again and opened as lumiere again!
As I said...totally jinxed.
That building must have hoisted 6 restaurants in 6 years!
The Adventurer July 10th, 2012, 04:16 PM Earlier...lumiere had the option of buying fresh fish and they'll cook.a reasonable fish for 3 ppl would cost around 800rs...so putting the meal at 1100 plus tips for 3 adults 2 years back I think.
But the place didn't look it(food was good though).
They had an organic store that sold a few veggies and some groccery products.
They even delivered weekly organic veggie kits in apartments in thevara...a bag with a few produce from their farm in munnar.
we tried lumiere once...but we stuck to the joints in fort kochi....where you could buy good fish from your local market, or even carry the one in your freezer and have it cooked...
e_arunsid July 10th, 2012, 04:33 PM ^^Majis food mall next to oberon does the same thing..You can select a fresh catch from the available set and they will cook it for you ..I found it to be very good
Lumiere was good ..a decent ambience at a reasonable price..wonder why it flopped? ..btw they also used to be cateres at Infopark's Tapasya building

My friend said, Smokehouse also have facility of live seafood cooking.... I had tried out eariler in Spice Route. They had it in weekends... Not sure whether they have now....
One reason of Lumiere's flop was poor marketing... They have little publicity campaign... Most of the people donot know why the cost at Lumiere is high.... Very few people knew its organic.... When I and my friends first went there, we were bit taken back, seeing the rates.... One of my friends casually remarked with the manager about the higher rates and then only came to know about the organic certifications....
But as said, in general food business in heart of Panamally Nagar seems to be not a good one.... Almost all the restaurants are closing there.... The Parampara, one Continental restaurant etc are some of the others.....

Don't understand the logic why these ME based chains/restaurants set up ME entrepreneurs write their signage in Arabic, when none of locals can read it....... In times when KFC, Pizza Hut writes their signages in Malayalam, it looks too amateurish seeing the Arabic Fonts in Kerala.....

Compromise is a word that is missing from the language of food-loving Kochiites. With the world coming down to Kochi in the guise of exclusive Italian, Thai, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese restaurants, the authenticity of foreign tastes is no longer a luxury but a prerequisite.
Sources in the hotel industry affirm that never before has so many international chefs from across the globe been flown down to Kochi as in the past one year to give a taste of authentic cuisine to our gourmands and to train the local chefs.
Akinori Nishyoka, the Japanese chef at Kochi’s first Japanese restaurant, Tokyobay has been here since the outlet’s recent inception to school Indian chefs in the art of Japanese cooking. Quiz the chef on what the experience has been like and he says, “Indians are terribly mistaken that Japanese food is all about snakes, lizards and raw fish.
In fact vegetables go into the major share of our ingredients. With minimum spices and little oil, Japanese food is closest to nature.” He is disappointed at the stinking fish markets of Kerala that can never be compared to what you see in Japan. :ohno:
“I would ardently beseech the fishermen of Kerala to learn the art of preserving and cleaning fish from the Japanese,” he hastens to put in, “only perfectly cleaned meat can produce that perfect taste.
The Manager Operations of the hotel, Thomas Kutty Kuriakose observes the difficulty in getting Kochiites accustomed to the authentic tastes of Japan.
He says, “Getting accustomed to the raw tastes of Japanese cuisine will be a time-consuming process. Hence, before serving any food, we make it a point to educate our customers on what goes in to their chow.”
The four-day-old Le Mashawi at Palarivattom is the newest addition to the exotic food destinations in Kochi.
The first-of-its-kind Lebanese restaurant in the State which has introduced 25 original Arabic dishes has a trained crop of Malayalee chefs who have worked in Arab restaurants for more than 20 years. “Catering to the large number of Gulf expats living in Kerala, one sees Arab bistros mushrooming in the state.
But anyone who has tasted authentic Arabian food will instantly identify the restaurants that are just imitations. That is where Le Mashawi will score,” explains Vinu Daniel the architect of the Egyptian-designed restaurant, an expat himself.
Vinu whose brother owns the joint elaborates that his family brought products from the Gulf to prepare the dishes. With a number of sheeshas (hookahs) available, one can get into the mood right away.
If you want to sample true Italian savouries, enter the exclusive Italian special restaurant, Roma in Holiday Inn, Kochi.
Chefs Akshay and Sanjay who have rubbed shoulders with the top Italian chefs have spread out a choice of bruschettas and pastas.
“We serve rustic Italian food in its perfectly unadulterated form and surprisingly, the taste has been welcomed by the Kochiites so we see good crowd even on weekday nights,'' says Chef Akshay.
For those that prefer Chinese and Thai Chopstix at Palarivattom and Thai Bbq House, Fort Kochi are the perfect dens. So, who says international cuisine is oceans away? It is here right at your doorstep!

Are Keralites in the ME found of Mallu food/Arab food? Generally, how popular is Mallu in the sense of resteraunts and even non-Mallus eating out there? Because near my PG place in Bangalore, there is a "authentic" Middle East eatery opening soon-run by a Keralite Muslim from North Malabar. ::lol::lol: When I asked him, he said Keralites both in Kerala/in Gulf/elsewhere like Arab style food. What are the food trends in the gulf?
