EKATERINBURG or YEKATERINBURG

You can name this city as you want. It was founded in 1723 and named after Saint Catherine, the namesake of Emperor Peter the Great's wife Empress Catherine I (Yekaterina, also romanized Ekaterina), who ruled Russian Empire within two years after Peter's death (1725-1727).

Wasn't it a waste of money anyway? By the renderings of Tim Hupe Architekten it seems all stands will have to be remodelled anyway soon. Or is that initial concept out of date already?

This reconstruction was began long before WC-2018 race.
Next reconstruction can begin in 2015. But there is no final decision now on whether it will be a reconstruction or building of the new stadium on another territory.

Never? But what about 2018 FIFA WC?

Due to geographic reason, Yekaterinburg don't have such good chances to host WC as some other cities. World Cup is only reason for reconstruction of this stadium or building of new one. Local football club playing in lowest division and have low attendance.

For this reasons, at this moment they have no necessary for beginning of construction works before final decision will be declared.

Russia 2018 host cities to be announced by FIFA in September

March 20 - FIFA will make a decision on which cities will host matches at the Russia 2018 World Cup this September, it was confirmed today.

The announcement was made at a press conference in Moscow, with Russia 2018 chief executive Alexey Sorokin (pictured left) and Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko (centre), also the organising committee chairman, in attendance along with FIFA marketing director Thierry Weil.

The host cities were initially to be confirmed in 2013, but Russia opted to bring forward the announcement a year to give them more time to prepare for the World Cup.

It was also confirmed that there will be 11 host cities, with two stadia in Moscow and one in the rest.

That means that Dynamo Moscow and Spartak Moscow will compete for their stadium to be used during the World Cup, as well as the Luzhniki in Moscow.

St Petersburg (pictured), Kazan, Sochi and Yekaterinburg are all set to be confirmed as host cities for the World Cup later this year, while other candidates include Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Volgograd, Samara, Saransk, Nizhny Novgorod, Yaroslavl and Kaliningrad.

FIFA will be given a two-and-a-half month tour from April around the potential host cities ahead of the announcement.

Sorokin said: "The leading criterion is the ability to hold a sports festival with all one's heart...to show Russian hospitality and how brilliantly, beautifully and with such warmth we can hold the World Cup."

Sorokin added that they hoped to "show the whole world that old stereotypes don't exist anymore, that Russia is new, that Russia is young, and that Russia is a worthy partner for the world not only in the football arena but in everyday life."

Russia 2018 also unveiled an interim event mark for the World Cup, a picture of the famous World Cup trophy on a red background, which Mutko was keen to emphasise was only a temporary measure.

"This is an interim mark, don't judge us on the quality and look on the mark," he said.

"It has been done to be readable, easily recognisable and combined with the World Cup.

"It has not been done in a creative way – that is to come.

"This is a mark which...will be used from now until the real emblem is launched.

"This mark will only be used on certain locations here in Russia, when the host city announcement is done in September.

"Also the commercial affiliates who sign up will be able to use the mark."

With the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the Moscow 2013 World Athletics Championships and a host of other sports events heading to the country in the coming years, Mutko expressed his hope that the industry would see the benefits.

He said that in total some 226 billion roubles (Ł4.9 billion/$7.7 billion/€5.8 billion) was being invested into the industry in the coming years.

Also announced today was that Igor Akinfeev (pictured), the CSKA Moscow goalkeeper, would be the first Russia 2018 ambassador.

"Igor is a true role model for millions of Russian boys, and he embodies all the best qualities of a man and a sportsman," Mutko said.

"He's a real pro and a gentleman, not to mention honest and decent.

"In a word, he's a genuine captain and a leader of every team he plays for.

"Moreover, Akinfeev is one of those players whom undoubtedly carry the hopes of the Russia national team at the 2018 World Cup."

Moscow, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg in race to host 2018 World Cup semi-finals

October 14 - Moscow, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg are vying to host the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2018, according to Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko.

Mutko confirmed the process for the selection of World Cup stadia earlier this week following a meeting of the World Cup Organising Committee, which he chairs, and FIFA.

The three venues are in contention as the only stadia with the required capacity of more than 60,000 to stage games of such profile.

Last month Mutko, who is also a FIFA Executive Committee member, said that the Luzhniki Stadium (pictured) in Moscow would host both the final and semi-final of the tournament.

The venue is one of only two proposed venues already built, though it will undergo renovation works in the years ahead.

If this is confirmed, then St Petersburg, where current champions Zenit's new stadium, which is still in construction, will vie with Yekaterinburg's proposed new ground, which will be the only stadium east of the Ural mountains if selected to host World Cup games.

How can it be antifootball?

I think the idea to preserve current stadium with only temporary stands for world cup is very sensible. That means money they've just spent on renovation won't go to waste and they will save some on tournament construction.

Ekaterinburg hardly needs a bigger stadium than they have right now. Yes, it has a running track, people all over the world live with things like that. It's still got pretty decent sightlines (upper rows) from what I know.

Obviously this one is npot beautiful in the 2018WC form, but it'll do just fine.

Those sigh lines of the goal stands are terrible for athletics :ohno:I understand the idea behind it though. For football, those stands are better. If they aren't planning on using the entire stadium during athletics events, this is the better option. And they leave the possibility for temporary stands, which will be done for the World Cup. But I wonder how the views on the pitch are from those seemingly improvised boxes underneath the goal stands... I'm sure there are quite some seats with restricted views in there.

That's quite another league.

Much better. Both are great but I prefer the first one.

is completely stupid, becoming rebuilding the stadium that has been done, and is not possible in this space very closely and without planning, A NEW stadium in another place, so park has the city, and one more thing, just opened in Ekaterinburg The pitch from the winter, it is more appropriate to that geographical location to build football stadiums with movable roof.
Leave storys for lawn and grass, even in the open fields of Russia not thrive terrain, so something must be done proportionally Astana only to better and brighter version

I think it's kind of transport issue. Maybe it's cheaper to build a new stadium at existing location than create new metro station and another infrastructure from scratch elsewhere.

is not the problem, indeed will need to create new infrastructure, where be better, but since you will be completely deconstructed repeat COMPLETELY THE STADIUM...!
( THERE DEFINITELY NEED One such for athletics in this country) and A NEW stadium like this only costs for dismantling a bunch of MONEY
therefore, NEW STADIUM HERE AND NOW On another better and more convenient location such as near a park with space for real INFRASTRUCTURE
